State Barnard Bee to Mexico City with an offer of $5 million if Mexico would recognize the Rio Grande as the border and recognize Texas Independence.

sends Santa Anna to Washington D.C. to have him sell the idea of the U.S. taking control of Texas

• His policy required money, which the government had very little of . He wanted to build a public school system and a first class University in Texas. Congress even put land up for sale for these programs. He earned the name “Father of Texas Education”

peace in Texas• 3.wanted to put the
nation on solid financial ground.

Native American Policy (Domestic Policy)
• Lamar• Wanted to remove native
Americans from the frontier. He thought they blocked westward expansion.
• They defeated the Cherokees, who had ties with Mexico. Comanche's lost in the Council House fight.
• Some thought they had no right to land
• Houston• Houston had lived
among Cherokees for several years. He understood the problems that faced them.
• He made treaties with Native Americans and set up trading posts on the frontier. Native Americans grew to distrust the Republic.

• To make Texas safer, he built a new army out of scratch. He fired Houston’s soldiers. He recruited from the U.S. and offered free land.
• Bought one ship and had 6 more ordered to be built. This small fleet was called The Republic’s new navy

small army so that he could keep cost down.
