INTRODUCTION

This magazine is about the differ-ent technology in past, present and in the future. We’re going to explain different information about the past, present and future technology. Our aim is to show people what the tech-nology has done and about to do to change people’s lives. We hope that you enjoy reading this magazine.

PAST Technology

Video gamesWith Microsoft’s kinect and playstations move coming out last year it’s time to look back at the consoles that preceded them so it time to have a fond look at the past.

Way back in 1972 Magnavox released the Magnavox Od-yssey it was the first video game console to be released in the UK but the idea was not fully realised yet so the odys-sey disappeared into obscurity.

While the Magnavox was the first video game console ever the Atari VCS or 2600 was the first video game console suc-cess selling nearly 30 million units and put the video game industry into the eyes of the public. However during the time of 1982-1983 it seemed making games for the Atari was nearly impossible to keep track of the good and bad games.

All of this was because there was no protection on the Atari so anybody could make a game for it even today so to cut through the clutter Atari decided to realise two big games one was Pac-man and the other was E.T both were terrible and resulted in the infamous video game crash of 1983 killing of the game industry for 3 years(It is also worth noting that E.T was a game so bad that all the unsold cartridges were buried in the mexic-ain desert) in America but over in Japan and Europe the video game industry was still going strong but for America no new games or consoles were being made.

The Nintendo and Sega wars

As mentioned earlier the video games industry was basically dead in America as nobody cared for video games and had moved onto computers like the commodore and apple. Back in 1984 Nintendo released the Famicom in Japan. It featured bet-ter graphics and a new control with the D-pad which has been on every single game console control since. It was a success in Japan so Nintendo wanted to find a way to break into America but nobody was interested in video games so Nintendo came up with a strategy to market it as a toy and not as a console and this seemed to work at first but Nintendo needed something to push it to stardom so was born a legend. The NES launched with Super Mario bros and put video games back into the eyes of the public but was solidified. Its success was arguably the legend of Zelda. It created one of the first gaming worlds Hyrule and gave player a quest to complete this has been seen in almost every single game today.

But there computer Sega released their own console to rival Nintendo the Master system while successful in Europe but didn’t do as well in America simply because Nintendo controlled most of the software that went into it so Sega was left to make their own games with no help so they tried again. In 1989 Sega released the Mega drive/gen-esis in Europe and America. It boosted Arcade like graphics and “blast processing”

It was made to rival the NES and did a pretty good job, but when Nintendo was about to release the Snes Sega and really needed a blockbuster game that would make people want to buy their console before the Snes came out. So they made Sonic the hedgehog and so the war started when the Snes came out it was released with Super Mario world which competed with Sonic the hedgehog then for the next 4 years. Sega and Nintendo flood the market with negative ad-vertising against each other like Sega came out with “Genesis does what nintendont” and Nintendo came back with “Nintendo is what geneisnt” etc. But what won the “war” for Nintendo was the fact that

Playstation era

n 1991 Sony announced at CES that they were going to make a CD add on to the Super Nintendo. However Nintendo later an-nounced that they were going to make it with Phillips instead but the Super Nintendo CD never came to be. Sony used what they had learned from the Snes to create the Playstation it released alongside the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64 was released one year later. For the most part the “Console war” took place between the Nintendo 64 and the Playstation because the Sat-urn didn’t last long on the market and only sold 10 million units which left Sega to create the Dreamcast.

The biggest problem with the Nintendo 64 was that it didn’t use cds it used cartridges, the advantage with cartridges is that they didn’t have load times and save could be made with the cartridge itself but it was hard to make games for it because it was protected. But the Playstation used CDS so it could store more data and runs smoother. But it had long load times and you had to save on a memory card. The big turning point for the Playstation was when Final fantasy 7 jumped ship from the Nintendo 64 and onto the Play-station simply because the Playstation used CDs so it was easier to make a cheaper. After that most of the big games was made for the PlayStation’s.

To be fair to the Nintendo 64, it had some of the best and most in-novative games of all time like Super Mario 64, the legend of Zelda, Ocarina of time and Golden eye. But the Playstation had so many more games than the Nintendo 64 like Metal gear solid, final fan-tasy7, 8 and 9, Crash bandicoot, Gran turismo, Tomb raider and much more. At the end of the era the Nintendo 64 had sold 40 Million units and the Playstation had sold 102 Million the first console to ever do

Nintendo had lost a “Console war” and little did they know it was about to get worse. But The gamebot colors also eveuslly sold 100 million units thanks to pokemon meaning this was some conulation for ninten-do.

IPod:

The iPod is a portable media player designed and mar-keted by Apple and launched on October 23, 2001. The product line-up currently consists of the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the touch screen iPod Touch, the iPod Nano, and the compact iPod Shuffle. IPod Classic mod-els store media on an internal hard -drive; while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued Mini used a Micro drive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model, ranging from 2 GB for the iPod Shuffle to 160 GB for the iPod Classic. All of the models have been redesigned multiple times since their introduction. The most recent iPod redesigns were intro-duced on September 1, 2010.

Video

HDTV: The term high definition once described a series of televi-sion systems originating from the late 1930s; however, these systems were only high definition when compared to earlier systems that were based on mechanical systems with as few as 30 lines of resolution. The British high definition TV serv-ice started trials in August 1936 and a regular service in No-vember 1936 using both the (mechanical) Baird 240 line and (electronic) Marconi-EMI 405 line (377i) systems. The Baird system was discontinued in February 1937. In 1938 France followed with their own 441 line system, variants of which were also used by a number of other countries. The US NTSC system joined in 1941. In 1949 France introduced an even higher resolution standard at 819 lines (768i), a system that would be high definition even by today’s standards, but it was monochrome only. All of these systems used interlacing and a 4:3 aspect ratio except the 240 line system which was progres-sive (actually described at the time by the technically correct term ‘sequential’) and the 405 line system which started as 5:4 and later changed to 4:3. The 405 line system adopted the (at that time) revolutionary idea of interlaced scanning to over-come the flicker problem of the 240 line with its 25 Hz frame

Format:

Blu-ray Disc (official abbreviation BD) is an optical disc stor-age medium designed to supersede the DVD format. The format defines as its standard physical media a 12 cm (same as DVDs and CDs), 25 GB per-layer optical disc, with dual layer discs (50 GB) the norm for feature-length video discs and additional layers possible later.

The name Blu-ray Disc refers to the “blue laser” used to read the disc, which allows for six times more storage than on a DVD.

Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures. As of June 2009, more than 1,500 Blu-ray Disc titles were available in Australia and the United Kingdom, with 2,500 in the United States and Canada. In Japan as of July 2010 more than 3,300 titles were released.

A 3D television (3D-TV) is a television set that employs tech-niques of 3D presentation, such as stereoscopic capture, mul-ti-view capture, or 2D plus depth, and 3D display—a special viewing device to project a television program into a realistic three-dimensional field.

Game Consoles:

In 1999 Sega released the Dreamcast although it only last 2 year on the market it sold over 10 million units and is a cult classic amongst gamers. The first console in the series of the, the PlayStation, was the first video game console to ship 100 million units after 9 years and 6 months of its initial launch In 2000 Sony realised the PlayStation 2 And One year later Microsoft and Nintendo released the Xbox and the GameCube, The PlayStation 2 is the most success-ful console ever realised With over 120 million units sold with the Xbox selling 40 million (Thanks to Halo) and the GameCube selling 25 million units sold making it, Nin-tendo least successful console even though it was the fastest selling console realises. But Nintendo’s Game boy advance was a bigger success with over 100 million units sold. In 2005 Microsoft released the Xbox 360 and Nintendo and Sony released the Wii and Playstation3 in 2006. Nintendo introduced motion control for the Wii which helped become a massive success with over 75 million units sold and still going with the Xbox 360 selling 50 million and the PS3 selling 30 million. Nintendo and Sony realised the DS and PSP in 2005 also the DS is the second most successful con-sole of all time with 115 Million units sold and still growing and the PSP sold over 15 million.

Future TechnologyMobile Phones:

The iPhone 4 has been release and it’s successful. Now people would think what would happen next and what would happen af-ter the release iPhone 4. Here’s the new concept for the iPhone 5.

This image is not too detailed but as you can see it’s holographic which means if they decide to make this iPhone, this design will rely on holographic projections. Cleaning:

Cleaning the bathroom is most time consuming job that I actual-ly try to evade if possible, but thanks to the Snail Cleaner by Ko-rean designer, Dong Hun Seo it lets you clean up your bathroom in hassle-free manner. The ’snail cleaner’ crawls all around your bathroom tiles to do the cleaning. It’s easy for the user to attach the snail on the tiles of your bathroom. The best part is you don’t need to get the bat-teries or charge it. Snail cleaner is gathers juice directly from the sun to clean the bathroom tiles in efficient way.

Energy:In many occasions people with gadgets that require chargers for-gets to charge their gadget. ‘Cyclus’ is one of the solutions for power generating. I personally think that this gadget would be very useful as I forget to charge my gadgets. This gadget will let you charge your phones or any gadget that has usb connection.

Music:

Much like his Fluid Smartphone, Brazilian designer Dinard da Mata has developed another wearable gadget that becomes a fashion accessory to complement the style of next-gen users. Hailed as “MP3 Player Creative,” the portable music player fea-tures a flexible OLED screen that other than displaying the playl-ist also lets the user select the song or control volume with just a touch of a finger. Worn around the wrist like a bracelet, the MP3 concept gives easy access of the functions to the user. In addition, the sleek music player includes wireless headphones to offer clutter-free music on the go.
