SAM NEWS
Greetings from Executive DirectorPaul PetersonIn 2011, the Employee Safety Commi6ee of The Samarkand initiated a campaign to reduce the number of employee work related injuries. Prior to the campaign, the campus was experiencing the highest number of injury claims within Covenant Retirement Communities. Today, with many of the strategies implemented and ongoing monitoring in place, the campus went from last to one of the top three campuses within CRC. We contribute our success to changing our work habits to ones that promote good safety practices. The campaign slogan implemented was “Think Safety.”
Starting in 2013, the Leadership Team of The Samarkand is initiating a new campaign that addresses the need to fill a number of vacant apartments in the residential living area of the campus. In order for this initiative to be successful, all employees and residents are required to be active participants.
To learn about the new campaign, I am planning to meet in January with both employees and residents in separate town hall meetings. To prepare for our town hall, I’m asking the employees and residents to think about the ways we can promote sales in the residential living area of the campus.

SAM NEWS
Bob and Anne Weber have recently joined our Samarkand family, having moved here from the Santa Barbara community. They are now comfortably settled into their Magnolia East apartment which, coincidentally, is only two apartments away from that of Joan Hotop who has been a close friend for many years.
Bob was born in Chicago, but after age four grew up in the Denver and Boulder areas of Colorado. After graduating from Boulder H.S., he attended University of Colorado Boulder, from which he graduated with a BA degree in physics with a specialization in electro-optics and spectroscopy. Bob’s junior year was particularly interesting for him, as he spent it in Bonn, Germany as a participant in the University’s education abroad program.
When Bob graduated in 1966, the Vietnam War was well underway. Rather than be drafted, Bob chose to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. For the next eleven years, he worked on infrared sensor system technology for the military space program. At the conclusion of his active duty, Bob joined the Air Force Reserves which overlapped the balance of his career working as a civilian for the Aerospace Corporation at the Los Angeles Air Force Base. He is currently semi-retired.
Anne was born and reared in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She attended the public schools through eighth grade, and then graduated from Northfield School for Girls. Following graduation, she attended Hood College in Frederick, Maryland and then pursued her nursing degree in a five year nursing program associated with the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Upon graduation from her nurse training, Anne left Massachusetts for
sunny, southern California. She settled in Santa Monica where she worked in the operating room at Santa Monica Hospital and also worked for an orthopedic surgeon. It was also during those years that she married and, eventually, had her two children, Gail and Steve.
When Anne’s children were school age, Anne enrolled in the Master’s Degree program at UCLA’s School of Nursing. The completion of this degree led to a twenty year career teaching in a college nursing program, followed by five years working at Davidson & Associates, an educational software company.
It was during Anne’s teaching career that she found herself to be a single parent. Lucky for her, however, and for her two children who were then teenagers, she met Bob during an evening out at a wine tasting party. That chance meeting eventually led to marriage for Anne and Bob who have now enjoyed 38 years together.
Now that Anne is retired and Bob is semi-retired, they both enjoy being involved in volunteer work. Anne currently volunteers with the Santa Barbara Symphony, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and the Assistance League of Santa Barbara. Together, Anne and Bob volunteer at the First United Methodist Church, the Santa Barbara Opera Co., and read textbooks for Learning Ally.
Bob and Anne have traveled extensively in Europe. They have enjoyed all of their destinations, including Spain, which Anne particularly enjoyed, as she was able to polish her Spanish speaking skills there. In the years to come, they plan to focus more on domestic travel.
Both Bob and Anne are very fond of classical music and opera. They also enjoy singing in their church choir. Individual interests include reading for Anne, and table tennis and browsing the internet for international news for Bob. A saxophone, which has been packed away for many years, is now becoming a possible renewed interest for him. Bob and Anne’s children, and their families, which now include four grandchildren, also bring them great joy. Welcome, Bob and Anne, to the Samarkand.

SAM NEWSNew Resident: Karl Sterneby Chuck Whiting
Karl was born in New York City, although his parents lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania at the time. They had emigrated from Germany where his father worked for Opel Automobile Company. Dr. Opel gave Karl’s father a letter of introduction addressed to Walter Chrysler who was putting together his Chrysler-Dodge company, but Karl’s father chose to stay in Allentown and joined Chrysler a few years later.
The family moved to the Detroit area and Karl completed high school there, and then earned a BS in Physics at the University of Michigan in 1948, and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1954. After his graduation from U of M, he worked for Andrew Corporation, a manufacturer of antennas and coaxial transmission lines. When he graduated from MIT, he moved to California to design particle accelerators at the University of California Radiation Lab. From there he moved around to several different companies throughout California. As head of marketing and contracts at Kaiser Electronics, he put together a team, including Texas Instruments, that developed and manufactured the integrated pilot’s cockpit display for the Navy’s F-111B aircraft. Later he became CEO of a startup manufacturer of solar power systems, but it was too early in the development cycle, and the company didn’t last. In yet another job, he was Vice President of Optical Sciences Group, which manufactured Fresnel lenses and prisms, primarily for temporary eyeglass inserts. They also manufactured lenses for the viewfinder of Polaroid’s SX70 camera and a wide angle lens for improved rearview in cars and trucks.
Karl has one brother who lives in Hawaii, who recently visited him here. Karl and his wife, Connie, who was an interior decorator, had two sons and a daughter. Son Doug and his wife live in the Bay area where he is Vice President of Pandora, the “internet music box.” Son Jim and his wife live in Santa Barbara where Jim is an entrepreneur who presents international seminars on internet metrics. He also is President of Lit Moon Theatre Company, a group that produces Shakespearean plays in modern settings. Jim’s wife, Colleen, is a Santa Barbara Superior Court judge and Episcopal priest. Karl’s daughter, Dr. Wendy Brown, is a therapist living in Westlake Village. Karl has four grandchildren, all married, and three great grandchildren. After Karl’s wife died last summer, the children convinced Karl to move from his home in Alameda to be closer to them in Santa Barbara. Together they shopped around the various retirement communities and chose The Samarkand as the best, but then we all knew that, right?
Karl states that he was forced to study the violin for eight years but prefers art. He collects both abstract and representative art including an architectural rendering by Frank Lloyd Wright, self-portraits by Picasso, Max Beckmann, Karl’s wife Connie, and a friend’s work that is evocative of The Scream by Edvard Munch. Karl also has a large collection of beautiful glass paperweights. He enjoys games and is a real whiz at Upwords, a three-dimensional variety of Scrabble. He attributes his skill to playing the game every evening with his wife. He reads fiction and biography, and enjoys crossword puzzles. He also writes occasional verse which he explains is poetry for a specific occasion.
Karl is gregarious and has an interesting family background. You’ll enjoy getting acquainted with him. We are fortunate to have him for a neighbor.

Opera Nightby John Menudier
“Opera at the Samarkand” will open the new year with Manuel De Falla’s “La Vida Greve” (A Brief Life) now universally accepted as the greatest genuinely Spanish opera in the international repertoire. It is ironic that the most famous “Spanish” opera, Bizet’s “Carmen,” was wriKen by a French composer who never crossed the Pyrenees. De Falla was a true native Spaniard from Andalusia. He wrote this opera in 1904-‐‑1905. It won a prize in Madrid but De Falla had to take the score to France to have it staged. It premiered in Nice in April, 1913, then at the Paris Opera Comique in December of the same year. Finally, it was staged in Madrid as World War I broke out. The plot resembles many of the Italian Verismo operas with the usual triangle of love, jealousy and murder between one man and two women. The action takes place in a courtyard of a gypsy habitation in Granada which De Falla never visited. It is a poignant story of passion, deception and death. Lovers of Andalusian rhythms, flamenco accents and dancing should not miss this opera. “La Vide Breve” by Manuel De Falla will be featured January 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Samarkand Opera House (aka the Mountain Room).

SAM NEWSOperation Christmas Child Wrap UpBy Bess DeWitt
Congratulations to everyone who had a part in making this year'ʹs Operation Christmas Child a resounding success. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to fill 100 boxes and pay the $7 per box postage as well. We even had extra money left over which will be forwarded to Samaritan'ʹs Purse to assist smaller groups unable to provide the needed postage.
Each box is designated for a boy or girl and also according to age from 2-‐‑14 years. Every gift box contains toys, candy, school supplies and toiletry items. One of the nicest gifts included in each box is the hand-‐‑knit hat lovingly made by Samarkand residents. Do6ie Johnson delivered our 100 boxes to the local collection site, the Community Covenant Church, on November 16th. From there the boxes began their long journey to bring joy to needy children in one of 130 countries around the world.
A very big thank you to many people is in order. Samarkand kni6ers, your hats are the centerpieces of each gift box. Dr. Thomas Blake, son of our own Marian and Bill Blake, donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for all the boxes.
Administration permi6ed the use of a vacant apartment again this year, which worked wonderfully well. Heather Howard, in the Accounting Department, created a special temporary account just for our donations. And what on earth would we do without Esperanza and her efficient staff? Brandel Hall residents made up individual packages of hard candies that must be double bagged for the trip.
Kudos to those of you who helped label shoeboxes and assist with final preparations. Lastly, a big thanks to everyone who came out to actually pack the boxes and help finalize the project. Well done!
It has been my pleasure to work with our able team again this year, Do6ie Johnson and Jean Woodruff, our shoppers extraordinaire. Imagine this: we were able to plan the entire event via email again this year -‐‑ not one prior meeting!
Last year Operation Christmas Child delivered 8.6 million boxes worldwide. When the final shoebox is counted this year, OCC expects to exceed 100 million of these simple gifts since it began in 1993.
The OCC mission: To demonstrate God'ʹs love in a tangible way to needy children around the world.

SAM NEWSCouldn’t Do Without...
Antonio Sanchezby Margaret May
Several years ago I interviewed Antonio Sanchez, then in charge of Smith Dining Room. Recently he has been promoted to Dining Room Supervisor for Smith Health Center, Garden Court, Heritage Court and Brandel Hall. His job includes training staff, working with food services and the many details of special diets. His day begins before breakfast and ends in the evening when the last clean dish is put away.
Antonio Sanchez was born in Guanajuato, a state north of Mexico City, from where few immigrants have come. He had limited connections with the United States, although his grandfather had participated in the Bracero Program. He knew of a big picnic-‐‑reunion for all members of the Sanchez families held every summer in Burbank. When he dropped out of engineering college, his mother urged him to come to California. His sister lived in Santa Barbara, so when he was twenty-‐‑four, he left his wife and two sons to visit or move here. He hated leaving his family, but opportunities were plentiful outside of Mexico.
His first job was washing dishes at Hillside House. He had worked in a restaurant in his hometown and after three months he asked his
supervisor if he could be a cook. She refused, saying his English wasn’t good enough. “I didn’t give up. After working from 5 AM until 3 PM I drove to Hancock College in Santa Maria, and after two years, earned my supervisor certificate. The supervisor promoted me to be a cook. I had several part-‐‑time jobs such as making 5000 fresh tamales to sell at Fiesta. I also did catering.”
His family is thoroughly American. He is amazed at how quickly they have adapted to the U.S. culture. They speak English and have no desire to visit Mexico. Although his wife encourages them to use Spanish and to remember the older ways, Antonio says, “Using English is a reality.” They have two children still at home. Daughter Debbie, who aKends SBCC and hopes to become a nurse, and son Chris, who aKends Dos Pueblos High School, is on the wrestling team and looks forward to a career in physical therapy. They hope their children will aKend college, for Antonio has the highest education of his nine brothers and sisters.
Antonio'ʹs hobbies revolve around fixing motorcycles and caring for his 1962 Chevy. He bought it twelve year ago and considers it a good investment as well as liking to drive it. Recently he took his son on a vacation to Oregon and they looked at the University of Oregon as a possible campus for Chris to aKend. They were surprised when the gas station aKendant took the gas pump away from them explaining that in Oregon one does not fill up the tank himself! It was pleasant to interview Antonio who is very enthusiastic, ambitious and enjoys his job. “I have learned so much by just observing how others work.“ His greatest frustration is trying to motivate low performing employees and says “I try to give encouragement to them to achieve higher goals and develop skills.”

Dining Services Updateby Phil Levere, Director of Dining Services
Thanksgiving brought the beginning of the 2012 Holiday Season and in addition to serving our residents, well over 100 visitors enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at The Samarkand. During November, Samarkand residents at every level of care were provided an opportunity to measure their satisfaction with Dining Services via a brief survey from Holleran Consulting. The Response rate of Samarkand Residents has been exceptional with 84% of the surveys being returned. We look forward to receiving results in January, 2013. There are many new faces in the Dining Services Department as Waitstaff and Dietary Aide staffing went through a re-‐‑building period after the start of the recent school year. We welcome all our new team members and look forward to having them join us in service to all residents at The Samarkand.
Assisted Living Updateby Therese Brown, Assisted Living Director
Begin the New Year by Feeling BeIer!The Assisted Living Department has hosted three interns from Santa Barbara City College’s Gerontology certificate program this fall. The interns have been involved in creating and implementing a health program called “Walking with Friends.” The program involved regular walking, an activity of significant importance to enhance cognitive function and reduce anxiety levels in our memory support population. Part of the interns’ curriculum involved training to teach a Stanford University developed Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP). The Samarkand will be the first location in Santa Barbara to offer the program. Sessions will be held from 9 am until 11:30 am for six consecutive Saturdays beginning February 2 in the Mountain Room.
The Workshop has been offered at hundreds of locations throughout the United States. It helps participants with ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, heart disease, and others to:•Find beKer ways of dealing with pain and fatigue •Discover easy exercises to help improve or maintain strength and energy•Learn the appropriate use of medications• Improve nutrition •Talk effectively with family, friends and health professionals•Understand new treatment choices•Feel beKer about life
For more information or to enroll in the workshop, please call Assisted Living Director Therese Brown at (805) 569-‐‑8580.

Christmas DecoratingMany hands make light work, and the holiday spirit was seen and felt by all who walked onto our grounds this past December. The Samarkand residents and staff experienced the holiday spirit by decorating together while they enjoyed hot cocoa and holiday cookies. It was a great time of fellowship as we beautified our campus into a Christmas wonderland.
Employee Appreciation PartyThe Samarkand Employee Appreciation Party was a smashing time! We are so blessed and thankful to work in such a warm and inviting community.

SAM NEWSFrom the Healthcare Administrator’s Desk
It is the New Year, and in many ways, we are starting over. In the Fiscal Year at The Samarkand, we still have one month, the month of January, to see if we can serve our residents in the best way possible, work at keeping our buildings full and work at controlling our expenses.
At the end of the regular year, we have enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving; the residents at The Samarkand gave generous gifts to the employees; and we shared gifts with our families and friends at Christmas time. One might think this is the only time to give thanks to God and those around us that serve us.
Have you ever worked hard at something, given your very best effort and no one said any word of thanks? The generations of residents that are represented at The Samarkand are good at saying thanks, and the way to continue to see good things happen is to recognize them and say, “Thanks, I saw what you did and I want to thank you for it.”
You might want to read Luke 17:7-‐‑10 where it talks about the servant coming in from his work in the field and he still needs to prepare dinner for his master. The question is asked, “Would the master thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?” The answer is, “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, we have only done our duty.”
Before God, it is good to know we have done our duty, but I hope I will remember to say thanks to those that have helped me all through the year. From the scripture, we don’t need to hear thanks for our work or every day duties, but it sure is nice when we do. Have a Happy New Year, giving thanks to God and those around you.

Thank You For Your Donations
The Employee Appreciation Committee would like to thank The Samarkand residents and conservators for residents who so generously contributed to the 2012 Employee Appreciation Christmas Fund. If you attended the Employee Appreciation Open House Party on December 6th, you, no doubt, saw the smiles on the faces of the employees and the happiness they were experiencing. Thank you again for your generosity and kindness. The total sum of the donations to the 2012 Employee Appreciation Christmas Fund at the conclusion of the fund drive on December 1st was $100,952. Thank you!

New Beginningsby Chaplain Sherry Peterson
There is something hopeful about New Years! The New Year has long been a favorite “holy” time following the celebration of Jesus entering my world. My Christian life came alive at the New Year in 1974. Parties held no interest but the opportunity to reflect and sense direction for the next year was inviting.
I lived in Japan from 1979 to 1981 and found that the New Year is a 3-day holiday for most Japanese. People spent the weeks before the New Year sweeping out the remains of the old year. It was a thorough house-cleaning—hosing the tatami mats, buying the celebration foods and gifts for hosts, decorating the doorways with bamboo and pine.
All bills are paid by the end of the year and forgiveness is asked where needed. Each act had symbolic meaning. The country closed down for 3 days and, if possible, people returned to their ancestral homes to see in the new year. Rather than Christmas cards, people sent New Year cards with the animal of the year. At midnight on New Year's Eve, the bell at our local shrine struck 100 times to ring out the evils of the old year and make way for the new. The whole neighborhood was silent.
The next day was amazing to we foreigners as we observed three million people attending the shrine at Kamakura. Ask our own Hisako Tada to tell you about the New Year in Odawara, Japan. It is such a delight to have her at The Samarkand- the first person I've met in the US who is from the town I lived in.
For me, the New Year involves letting go of old attitudes and old grievances. It is a thorough house-cleaning of the soul time. I love to make room in my home, on my bookshelves—symbolic space. I wait to see what God brings to fill those spaces. And I pray for God's priorities for the New Year. I invite you to wait with me before the God who says, “Behold, I make all things new!” (Rev. 21:5)
