Tom Chatfield

British author and columnist for the BBC.

In his TED speech “7 ways games reward the brain” Tom outlines what he calls The of the Power of Virtuality.

Tom not only speaks about how data and information are used to keep gamers rewarded and satisfied, but how the same principles can be used outside the gaming world.

Tom catches and maintains his viewers attention through his own

personal passion for gaming.

Feedback

Element of un-certainty (Unknown Reward)

Dynamism Rating 3/5Tom is extremely passionate about what he speaks about. But could benefit from a better stage presence. Also tying things in with stories would help.

Through Tom’s TED talkI have learned that having a strong passion behind your words means all the difference.

Tips for classmates:

Talk about what you love. Your passion for your topic will flow naturally.

To Compare…

Tom Chatfield and Ken Robinson are both affluent public speakers.

Both succeed in getting their messages across, and speak thoroughly about their topics.

Though the way they speak is entirely different.

Tom Chatfield speaks passionately about his topic because he himself is a devoted gamer. While speaking he draws from his own inside knowledge to help put his vision into words.

Ken Robinson connects with his audience through storytelling. He pulls his listeners in with his stories, hooks them with information on his topic, and keeps their attention with humor.
