About Samba Turns a Unix system into a file and

print server for Microsoft Windows network clients

Lets users store their files and important executables in a single place for easy sharing and backup

Recognizes and speaks the SMB protocol developed by Microsoft for file and printer sharing on its own systems

Previous Work

RC’s Independent Study research Downloaded and installed Samba

2.0.7 (www.samba.org) Created the configuration file

Our Goals

Enable communication between Windows and UNIX machines

View shared files from either system

Print from UNIX machine to Windows-based printer

Add additional users to the system

First Steps

Realized that the previous downloaded version did not work towards our benefit

Downloaded and installed the binary version of Samba 2.0.7 Binary version came with preset

defaults for the system

Second Steps

Installed SWAT Web-based application to create

the configuration file Set up the system to meet our

needs Created the configuration file

Connecting

Connected to all Windows machines on the network once the configuration file was tested Used “smbclient” command Viewed shared folders and files

within each machine Created new accounts on the

Samba machine

Connecting Shared the Samba server in

Network Neighborhood

Printing

Changed the general configuration file to point to the printer configuration file

Enabled print option (printable = yes)

Modified printer configuration file to print on NetLaser (Networks Lab printer)

Printing Problems

Knows it must print to NetLaser but unable to do it so far

Received error message from NetLaser Shows that a connection was

established Encryption?

Encryption Problems

Unable to connect to the Unix machine from a Windows machine Encrypted passwords

Prevented printing
