The “Explorer” was the first product of a new trend in

tractor design, that in 1983 saw the development of

features considered innovative at the time, especially for

medium-low horsepower machines.

Based on specific demands the market was beginning to

make, in terms of performance and comfort, SAME set

about designing a brand new tractor, starting from a blank

sheet of paper and introducing new engineering designs

that had never been used by the competition in this power

bracket. All the assemblies making up the tractor were

reinvented, taking account of the direction in which farm

mechanisation was moving, and the new approach to

agriculture generally.

The new engines were designed for agricultural use

— this has always been the SAME philosophy — and built

in accordance with "modular" principles, even when

liquid cooling was introduced. With a dual cooling

system designed for the cylinder liners (air at the top, oil

at the bottom), and pistons cooled internally by powerful

oil jets, it became possible to achieve a more uniform

running temperature, which in turn brought the advantage

of constant efficiency even when operating under heavy

workloads and in high ambient temperatures.

The fuel injection system was fitted with individual wet

pumps driven by the camshaft, in the interests of simple

construction and greater reliability.

Timing gears with helically cut teeth were introduced, so as

to minimize backlash and reduce noise levels.

In keeping with SAME tradition, particular attention was

focused on operating economy at the design stage, with

the aim of achieving low fuel consumption.

The engine that emerged was a truly compact unit,

bringing the added benefit of a more streamlined hood

that would create tighter steering angles for enhanced

manoeuvrability, and a better view of the front end.

The transmission was no less innovative: smaller gear

trains, all helical and arranged on 3 shafts, designed

to achieve maximum compactness combined with high

mechanical efficiency and minimal vibration, in contrast to

conventional gearboxes with just 2 longer shafts and bigger

flywheel balancer gears.

Forced lubrication would guarantee greater operating

safety, even on steep gradients.

The power take-off was equipped with an oil-immersed

multi-disc clutch (found generally on higher horsepower

machines) and an independent output shaft providing

ground speed PTO, for drive axle trailers equipped with

pick-up or spreader attachments.

The new Explorer also had an independent power steering

pump, ensuring that the steering wheel could be turned

effortlessly even at low engine speeds. The front axle was

equipped with oil-immersed disc brakes incorporated

into each of the 4 wheel hubs, to give genuine all-wheel

braking: a new feature (and a first, compared to the

competition) guaranteeing efficient and dependable

braking even on steep gradients.

The powerful hydraulic lift featured the classic SAME

control system designed to give maximum traction for

tillage and towing applications, even in wet conditions.

The driving position and the cab were cleverly futuristic for

those times, and especially for medium-low horsepower

tractors: flat platform suspended on silent-block mounts,

shift levers located to the right of the driver and pendant

style pedals... all giving ergonomic advantages comparable

to those of much bigger machines. The cab also met the

demand for high visibility, with its notably narrow posts

and generously proportioned windows.

All this seems quite normal today, but in the '80s it

was leading-edge technology, so much so that the

philosophy guiding the design, even with updates and

new implementations, has remained essentially the same,

and Explorer models have continued to be modern and

innovative in the years since.

The market launch of the Explorer showcased 2 models initially,

rated 55 and 65 HP, which were soon followed by a more powerful

75 HP. The range included 2WD and 4WD versions, with ROPS and

with cab.

The 65 HP model was also offered in a “Special” version (without

cab) featuring height-adjustable fenders and a driving position with

footsteps.

Salient features: 3 and 4-cylinder engines with 916 cc displacement,

air and oil cooled. Synchromesh mechanical transmission with Hi-Lo

and creeper, giving 32 forward and 16 reverse speeds. 540/1000 PTO

with hydraulic clutch and independent shaft for ground speed PTO.

Oil-immersed disc brake assemblies on all 4 wheels.

Reactive type power steering with 2 hydraulic rams. Front axle with

70° steering angle on 2WD machines and 50° on 4WD. Hydraulic

lift with position, draft and mix control. Flat platform suspended on

silent-block mounts, pendant pedals, shift levers located to one side,

Tilt-adjustable steering column, sound-insulated cab with heater

and roof hatch.

By 1986 the range offered four models rated 60, 70, 80 and 90 HP,

and two “Special” versions rated 70 and 80 HP. Engines of larger

displacement were introduced: the "1000 Series" (1000 cc per

cylinder). The transmission acquired a 5-speed gearbox, giving the

machine a top speed of 40 km/h.

7

The Explorer was now given the suffi x “II”, and developed still

further with the addition of new important features: the exhaust

silencer was relocated under the hood, enhancing visibility during

operation and achieving a reduction in noise levels.

The transmission became available with powershift (SynchroPower),

increasing the number of speed ratios to 40 FWD + 40 REV.

A 4-speed power take-off was introduced, now including economy

speeds and allowing the operator to benefi t from lower fuel

consumption when working with implements requiring a modest

power demand.

Performance levels were increased with the availability of a

front hitch and PTO, for use with front mounted implements,

or implements operating both front and rear. Quick and easy

attachment of the front ballast weight — used only when required —

would help to save fuel and reduce soil compaction.

Comfort too was enhanced further, with the introduction of

electrohydraulic controls for engagement of the PTO, four wheel

drive and differential locks, plus the option of air conditioning in

the cab.

The pressed steel body panels and driving platform were zinc-

coated to avoid rust and keep the long-term value of the

investment high.

The versatility of the Explorer II was also increased by offering a

reversible driving position, useful not least for municipal duties.

“Special II” machines now also included low profi le versions, ideal

for working under overhanging branches and foliage.

In 1998, by incorporating a wealth of engineering features,

the 70, 80 and 90 HP were also given a new look: fresh,

modern body styling with rounded contours, in keeping with

that of bigger horsepower tractors.

The sloping hood increased visibility at the front end and

gave the tractor a more mutli-fuctional appearance.

In 2004, additional versions with cab were marketed under

the name "Classic": these had a more low-tech profi le and a

correspondingly lower price-tag.

The “Special II” versions also took on a new name

— Explorer T — and were available in a range of 3 models

rated 75, 85 and 95 HP.

In the years that followed, 2 further models were put on

the market under the name "Explorer New", which were

the predecessors of the Explorer3 range, featuring 3 stage

Powershift, SBA system (automatic control of 4WD and

differential lock functions), more powerful hydraulics, and

electrohydraulic spool valves.

The Explorer continued to evolve, with more features and a new look, and the addition of a suffi x "3" to

the name. And now more horsepower too, with models rated 85 to 110 HP. This was a development that led

to the introduction of the Deutz engine, which was also able to run on 100% Biodiesel. The exhaust silencer

was repositioned alongside the cab corner upright, improving visibility to the front. The option of a hydraulic

power shuttle enhanced the technology of the machine still further, offering the driver increased operating

comfort and saving time on repetitive "back and forth" tasks. The hydraulic system likewise was enhanced

to increase the fl ow of oil available for external services, and provide higher lifting capacity. Similarly, the

appearance of the tractor was completely revamped, giving the body a more modern look, and developing

a new and larger cab with the controls repositioned to maximise ergonomic layout and comfort. Versions

without cab had a roll bar type ROPS with 2 posts.

“A multi-faceted project like this calls for willingness and ability to bring together a huge diversity of requirements and skills”

The new Explorer is more than simply a successful product continuing to evolve: it represents an entirely new project. In effect, we decided ourselves to reassess the needs of the market with the aim of identifying new demands: technical, comfort-related, dimensional and economic. The assessment led us to create a new range of products structured in 3 families offering a total of 11 models. An offering of this nature could not be fully implemented without the development of components designed entirely by SAME: the FARMotion 3 or 4-cylinder modular engine, a family of transmissions compassing three levels of power and weight, a completely new cab and, not least, hydraulic and electronic systems redesigned specifically with this new platform in mind.

For medium horsepower tractors like the Explorer, the integration of engine and vehicle is a crucial factor in offering the market the best possible combination of performance, operational economy, driveability and ease of maintenance. Hence the development of the new 3 and 4-cylinder FARMotion engines, which combine the SAME company's long experience in designing and building engines for agriculture with expertise provided by the world's top developers of combustion control technologies. FARMotion technology is based on a combustion chamber of highly advanced design which, in conjunction with a Bosch Common Rail fuel injection system rated 2000 bar and an oxidation catalytic converter (DOC), delivers high power and torque even at low crankshaft speeds, low fuel consumption, reliability and ease of maintenance.

The design of the new Explorer range demonstrates the maximum expression of versatility and multi-capability. Each version of the product offers a variety of configurations and

options, designed to meet the increasingly specific demands of the market and cover the widest spectrum of mission objectives. The Explorer has been developed with clear goals of multi-capability and efficiency, maximising performance and reliability, optimising operator

comfort and introducing even higher safety standards.

DEVELOPMENT

“Work revolves around the individual”

“Useful and usable technology, helping people in agriculture to do their job better”

“A medium horsepower range must cover a wide variety of uses, which means that the choice of transmissions is crucial”

The transmissions of the new Explorer models, evolving from previous versions, were designed to suit the requirements and complement the power units of the new tractors. Accordingly, there are transmissions available with 4 or 5 speed changes

plus 2 or 4 ranges, giving speeds from 8 FWD + 8 REV up to 20 FWD + 20 REV for mechanical transmissions, from 16 FWD + 16 REV up to 40 FWD + 40 REV with Hi-Lo, and from 30 FWD + 30 REV up to 60 FWD + 60 REV with HML Powershift.

Top speeds, depending on the type of transmission, are 30 or 40 km/h, even with the engine running at economy rpm. The aim was to offer a generous choice of transmission configurations for tractors working in a variety of different operations,

and this has been achieved.

Operators spend whole days at the wheel of their tractors, in all seasons and all kinds of working conditions.Consequently, the cab plays a key role in providing a haven of comfort and safety: it must be spacious and create a comfortable environment; it must also be equipped with ergonomically positioned controls and able to offer a panoramic view of the entire work area.It is on these concepts that we have based the design and construction of the new Explorer cabs: work revolving around the individual, who must be provided with the best possible conditions to do the job in hand. At all times.

In our sector today, there are products packed with technology and sophisticated systems that the customer often does not exploit to their full potential. The starting point for the development of the new Explorer machines was the principle of using electronics

to simplify operations and improve productivity, while combining the selected technical features with maximum achievable modularity in design. Customers who choose these machines will benefit from the SDD steering system, which halves the number of turns required on the steering wheel, the tried and tested Stop&Go feature, facilitating front

loader manoeuvres and controlling the drive response of the electrohydraulic shuttle for maximum comfort, hydraulics incorporating 60L/min ECO technology, total safety

provided by the Parkbrake, and much more besides. All these functions have been developed with efficiency and productivity in view.

SAME Explorer models are equipped with next generation engines of the FARMotion family. 3 or 4-cylinder engines with high pressure (2000 bar) Common Rail fuel injection guarantee performance, reliability and low running costs. The EGR exhaust gas recirculation and DOC aftertreatment used on Explorer engines ensure compliance with Tier 4 interim regulation standard. Similarly, the new geometry of the cylinder heads and combustion chambers helps in turn to optimise fuel burn, allowing users of the new Explorer models to exploit the full potential of the engine and benefi t from signifi cant fuel economies.

ENGINE

There are two FARMotion engines used for SAME

Explorer models: a 3-cylinder version of 2887 cc

displacement for maximum economy, and a 4-cylinder

version of 3849 cc displacement built primarily for

performance.

High effi ciency of the engine is assured by a Common

Rail fuel injection system operating at pressures up

to 2000 bar and equipped with 7-hole injectors. The

high pressure system guarantees immediate response

from the engine to varying load conditions, whilst

electronically controlled injection timing improves

performance and reduces fuel consumption. This

technology also helps to cut emissions by ensuring

a more thorough atomisation of the fuel, and

consequently better combustion.

FARMotion engines guarantee high maximum torque,

which means greater pulling power and superior

fl exibility. In effect, these are engines providing torque

rises as high as 30% to 35%, depending on the

model, and a wide consistent operating range.

All the engines feature a new geometry of the

cylinder heads and combustion chambers. This

helps to optimise fuel burn, allowing users of the

new Explorers to exploit the full potential of the

engine and benefi t from signifi cantly reduced fuel

consumption.

The thickness of the cylinder walls has been increased

to achieve lower levels of vibration and noise, better

resistance to cavitation and less "fatigue" induced by

mechanical and thermal stresses.

Modular advantage is provided by the individual

cylinder heads and removable liners: a real benefi t

to the customer in the event of parts needing to be

replaced.

The crankshaft features a new design and is made

of forged steel for added strength and better

balancing. To achieve higher effi ciency, performance,

durability, reliability and strength, the crankcase has

been reinforced to withstand a higher pressure in

the combustion chambers. FARMotion engines are

designed for: compactness, dependability, and ease of

routine servicing. The generator drive belt is tensioned

automatically and will remain permanently at the

correct setting, with no maintenance required.

The EGR exhaust gas recirculation and DOC

aftertreatment used on Explorer engines ensure

compliance with Tier 4 interim regulation standard.

21

DOC(Diesel Oxidation Catalyst)

With the introduction of an oxidation catalytic

converter (DOC), exhaust gases treated by the EGR

system are directed through and brought into contact

with the catalyst, which reduces the level of nitrogen

oxides (NOx) in the emissions.

Unlike diesel particulate filters (DPF), the effectiveness

of the DOC converter is guaranteed for the lifetime

of the engine, and with no maintenance or active

regeneration procedures required.

EGR(External Gas Recirculation)

The exhaust gas recirculation system significantly

reduces the level of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which

are among the most powerful pollutants produced

by the combustion of fossil fuels. A butterfly valve

governed by the engine control unit opens to allow

some of the exhaust gases from the cylinder back

into the inlet manifold, where they mix with the air

entering the cylinder. Importantly, the EGR system

has its own cooler, by which the temperature of the

exhaust gases recirculated to the inlet is lowered, to

ensure combustion efficiency is not jeopardized, and

avoid increasing fuel consumption. With electronic

control, this externally cooled version delivers higher

performance, especially in terms of acceleration and

response.

ELECTRONIC ENGINE MANAGEMENT

Optimum control and efficiency are delivered

consistently by FARMotion engines, thanks to their

modern electronic management system, which always

guarantees an instant response and more reliable

PTO speed control. All engine operating parameters

are monitored constantly by dedicated sensors and

optimised as a result of controlling the fuel injection

system. Besides optimum fuel metering, the electronic

engine management system ensures stable and

consistent performance, with swift, direct and precise

response to the different drive and load conditions

encountered. All this, and maximum simplicity too:

using the hand throttle and the memory button,

the operator can at any given moment set, save and

retrieve a preferred engine speed for the particular job

in hand. The benefits are soon apparent: the operator

can handle the tractor easily and with total freedom,

focusing more attention on the business of driving.

Page 22: SAME - New Explorer

22

With a wide choice of transmissions available,

Explorers are able to meet a wide variety of needs:

soil preparation, spraying, drilling, minimal tillage

or yard duties. Based on a 4-speed or 5-speed

gearbox, ranges can be added to give ratios from 8

FWD + 8 REV to 10 FWD + 10 REV, and with Hi-Lo

and creeper from 16 FWD + 16 REV to 20 FWD +

20 REV, in the case of mechanical transmissions.

Alternatively, customers can select a 4- or 5-speed

gearbox with ranges giving from 16 FWD + 16

REV to 20 FWD + 20 REV speeds with clutchless

Hi-Lo Powershift allowing an up-down adjustment

of the speed on each ratio (speed reduction of

16% between one speed and the other) simply by

pushing a button on the gear lever. There is the

option of Hi-Lo and creeper, doubling the number

of speeds available.

All options are fitted with a forward/reverse shuttle

— mechanical (LS version) or hydraulic (GS version)

— operated by a lever on the steering column.

Maximum speeds, depending on the type of

gearbox, are 30 or 40 km/h, even with the engine

running at economy rpm. With Overspeed, the

tractor can cruise on the road at 40 km/h either in

economy mode (staying in top gear), or exploiting

the full performance capabilities of the engine,

using a lower ratio. With low engine speed, fuel

consumption can be reduced significantly, whilst

the power of the engine can be exploited at a

speed near to that of the maximum rated torque.

The effect is ultimately to produce an optimum

power curve, better fuel economy and superior

driving comfort, thanks to lower levels of noise and

vibration.

Finally, the ability of the Overspeed transmission to

reach 40 km/h top speed is unaffected by tyre size,

a factor significantly increasing the efficiency and

comfort of the tractor when driving on the road,

with or without a load.

TRANSMISSION

every Need.

Page 23: SAME - New Explorer

23

On the Explorer 115.4 HD is there a transmission

designed to give ratios for every imaginable practical

need, offering 30 forward speeds + 30 reverse, or

60 FWD + 60 REV with a top speed of 40 km/h

even with the engine running in economy mode.

The 3-speed Powershift enhances both the level of

performance and the driving skills of the operator:

within each gear change, there are no less than

three options for adjusting driving speed on the go,

under power. In practice, this means that having

a selected a speed range appropriate for the work

in hand, the operator can continue to adapt the

actual ground speed to the prevailing load, simply

by pressing a button on the shift lever. For tillage

purposes, best results when using PTO driven

implements are guaranteed by a power take-off

with 4 speeds (540/540ECO/1000/1000ECO),

independent ground speed PTO, and a front PTO

operating at 1000 rpm. The PTO can be controlled

both from the driving position and from buttons

mounted on the rear fenders. In addition, there is

a PTO Auto function (available only with electronic

lift) allowing the operator to program the power

take-off so that it will deactivate and restart when

the rear lift linkage is raised and lowered to certain

positions. Implements can be used simultaneously

at front and rear thanks to a front PTO operating at

1000 rpm, driven directly from the engine, which is

engaged by an oil-immersed multi-disc clutch with

soft start electrohydraulic control.

Page 24: SAME - New Explorer

24

Explorer models in the GS version are specified with

a load-sensitive hydraulic Power shuttle, and with

the Stop&Go system. The shift-on-the-go shuttle

is equipped with 2 oil-immersed “long life” multi-

disc clutches (for longer life and reliability) and

incorporates an electronic control unit allowing

the shuttle to operate under power as soon as the

speed drops to 13 km/h, safeguarding the integrity

of the mechanical components involved. The shuttle

can be used to change the drive direction on all

gear ratios, which saves a considerable amount of

time when manoeuvring and making return passes.

The shuttle lever is located beneath the steering

wheel. Ergonomically designed and easy to use,

it has a “neutral” position and will function only

when enabled, to ensure total safety in operation.

In addition, and for ultimate comfort, the gears can

be shifted smoothly and effortlessly by pushing the

ComfortClutch button on the shift lever, without

having to use the clutch pedal.

The power shuttle lever incorporates a modulation control (thumbwheel potentiometer) with which the

operator can select a sharper or softer response from the shuttle, according to the operating requirements.

SENSECLUTCH POWER SHUTTLE

RESPONSE CONTROL

Page 25: SAME - New Explorer

25

The Stop&Go system expands the features and

operating potential of the shuttle, providing the

driver with a higher level of manoeuvrability

especially when the tractor driveline has to be

disengaged for intervals of varying duration, such

as when operating with a front loader, or when

hitching implements, or moving off on gradients.

With Stop&Go installed, the movement of the

tractor can be controlled utilizing only the brake

pedals, with no need to operate the clutch pedal.

In practice, when the brake pedals are depressed,

the tractor stops and the system will simultaneously

put the shuttle “on hold”. When releasing the brake

pedals subsequently, the shuttle is re-enabled by the

Stop&Go control unit, which guarantees a gradual

and modulated engagement of the hydraulic clutch,

and the machine will drive again positively, without

jerking. All this makes the tractor incomparably

practical when manoeuvring, as well as safe, reliable

and comfortable to operate.

STOP&GO

Page 26: SAME - New Explorer

26

With operators now demanding more and more

sophisticated performance when using implements,

and more control options — allowing them to work

any kind of soil and to achieve the best results with

maximum precision and speed of action — these

machines offer a rear lift with mechanical control, or

the option of electronic control, powered by a high

flow hydraulic circuit.

Explorer models are equipped with a hydraulic

system designed to maximize performance,

using either a single pump rated 55 L/min or an

innovative 60ECO system with dual pump rated

60 L/min at just 1600 rpm, and mechanically or

electrohydraulically operated spool valves with flow

control.

Maximum lifting capacity is 3500 kg for the LD

version, but where bigger lifting power is required,

the Explorer range includes an MD version with

lifting capacity of 3600 kg and an HD version with

lifting capacity of 4800-5400 kg.

Explorer LD, MD and HD models are offered in a variety of 2 and 4 wheel drive versions. The front axle has high

ground clearance and adjustable track width — important when working with inter-row crops. Optimum weight

distribution guarantees the balance needed for drilling operations, and a chassis that will also allow the use of

implement attachments used typically for minimal tillage or no-tillage drilling. Explorer LD, MD and HD models are

specified with different maximum permissible loads, making them ideal for front loader duties.

A steering system with dedicated pump guarantees matchless manoeuvrability, even at low engine speed. The

steering angle of the front axle is 55° for 4WD models, and 60° for 2WD. To ensure optimum productivity of the

tractor and benefit from maximum traction and efficiency, the engagement of the front and rear differential and four

wheel drive functions on Explorer models is controlled electrohydraulically.

The innovative SDD (Steering Double Displacement)

steering system ensures greater driving comfort, as

well as helping the operator negotiate demanding

and complicated manoeuvres. In effect, the operator

need only press a button to increase the flow rate

of the steering pump and halve the number of turns

required at the steering wheel.

SDD (Steering Double Displacement)

The innovative Park Brake system will ensure

that the tractor is always securely and efficiently

immobilized. This system features a device that locks

the brakes with a high mechanical load. The brake

is released automatically by a hydraulic system when

the engine is started up. In the event of the tractor

being parked on a steep gradient, the Parkbrake will

prevent any movement to ensure total safety.

PARKBRAKE

Genuine 4-wheel braking is provided by oversized

rear multi-disc assemblies (5 discs per side)

operating on each of the rear differential half shafts,

and hydraulically operated inboard front brakes. The

front brakes are especially useful when transporting

loads on sloping terrain, where the additional

braking capacity proves considerably advantageous.

The new Explorer cab is a pleasant, functional and

comfortable place to be. The new materials, the

new colour scheme of the interior, the outstanding

visibility and the logical positioning of all the controls

combine to make this cab the new benchmark for

medium horsepower tractors. Simplicity of use,

the “colour line” logic adopted for identifying

groups of controls by function, and a high level

of operator comfort — all these ensure the driver

will feel perfectly at home right from the start. The

cab structure has been designed with 4 narrow

and tapered posts to guarantee maximum visibility.

The flat platform has become an integral part of

the cab module, rendering the entire structure

stronger and free of vibration, and at the same

time reducing noise levels. A powerful heater for

the winter, and efficient air-conditioning for the hot

and sultry summer months: air from both of these

systems is delivered through 10 directionally and

proportionally adjustable vents allowing control of

the flow, and 2 fast demist vents for the windscreen.

With a steering wheel adjustable for height and tilt,

hydrostatically operated pendant style pedals, and

an air-suspension driver seat, the ergonomic benefits

of the new cab will be evident even after only a few

hours work. The passenger seat is proportioned and

positioned for maximum comfort and convenience.

The window hatch of the high visibility roof not only

lets in fresh air, but also gives a clear view of the

attachment when using a front loader, for easier and

safer operation.
