It was 11:30hrs on a beautiful day in school campus. But the excitement of attending Mi-lana function after a gap of 3 long years had already vanished. It was just me, Amar, Karthik and two juniors waiting in the computer lab in anticipation of more friends. waited long for others and still it was only 50+ who attended the alumni function. It was sometimes frustrat-ing and embarrassing. Nevertheless, we started and somehow managed with who-ever was available. New office-bearers were selected for next two years. It was not the kind of day I would have even dreamed to spend in school. Its difficult to understand and identify a spe-cific reason for this low turnout. Don't know if its the low after the high of silver jubilee cele-bration or was it because change of date ? or is it simply a reflection of modern society. Whatever is the reason, it’s not a good sign for our organization. We need each and every-body's co-operation and participation, if we are to grow as an organization. Alumni has more than 1500 Navodayans spread across the globe. We are everywhere and thus its inevitable that we stay connected and build a strong network. We have more than 700 members on fb group. But we hardly know everyone personally. I might know 150 of them personally. We are from the same school. However, we do not feel connected to each and everyone. Our focus for the next two years is to bridge this gap. We would have to build a conducive environ-ment which helps us to build a strong net-work. Magazine is the first step towards achieving our goal. We have artists, police, doctors, painters, writers, sportsmen etc among our-selves. This magazine provides a common plat-form for everyone to share their thoughts,

experiences, knowledge, ideas and everything We have got exciting events planned for this year. We would be having blood donation camp, medical camp in school, cultural family get together in Bangalore along with the cus-tomary cricket tournament. But we would need your participation and co-operation to achieve our goal. We would be having a get-together and send-off to Principal Ravi Sir on 16th Feb, 2013. Please speak to your batch reps and confirm your participation. Looking forward to a larger gathering and active par-ticipation from alumni. I know everyone is busy in their life. Priorities keep changing and its difficult to maintain the

same level of motivation all the time. మగ ఒంf 10 mins Sh iY .? మర9 S\G మగ.. Sorry.. Next time ]ూణ మగ..!! We use these excuses

everyday. We have got 300,500 and some even 1000 friends on social networking sites. But end up with very few or even none when we require them the most. Are we missing something in our life? Lets get started and re-live the "Navodaya Experience"...!!

A long period of 7 years with a few tal-ented, a few emotional, a few creative, a few athletic, a few crazy and a few reticent is an inexplicable tale to share with. And we all know the kind of connection we possess with some other who is from Navodaya. Bhargava(J10) Bhargava(J10) Bhargava(J10) Bhargava(J10) was telling about an experi-ence of his. He was part of an orientation pro-gram with some students at his workplace. It was an interactive session, and students were asking questions in between. At the end, he introduced himself and mentioned that he studied from a Navodaya. Right then, a girl who was quiet all through the program turned active and asked him which Navodaya was he from. I used to go to Chamundi hills in Mysore very often through the steps. One day, there was a group of people moving in front of us. After sometime, I realized that it was just one girl who was talking and she was telling Navo-daya stories to her friends. (Don’t we all know, we always have this never ending list of navo-daya stories to tell?) It didn't take me much time to introduce myself to her. And we hit it off instantly. One of my college friend’s husband is from Assam Navodaya. I have more topics to talk with her husband than with my friend :-) Vijay Bhat (J12) Vijay Bhat (J12) Vijay Bhat (J12) Vijay Bhat (J12) commented on one of my arti-cles Random memories - Almost all the articles about navodaya by any JNV alumni would have the similar tone. May be, it is because of the similar experience that we all went through. And it is the same emo-

tion we go through even now, when we re-member those good ol’ Days. May be that is why we feel an instant connection when a stranger says he is also from a Navodaya.

We are all like this. Aren’t we? We have so many things to tell and share Now you have a platform to share. Dig out Now you have a platform to share. Dig out Now you have a platform to share. How many of your friends envy you for the kind of education, experiences that you have. Our school has produced 20 batches till now. Most of us remember our seniors, who either ragged us (boys) or helped us with our studies and daily chores (girls). As year goes on, old batches passes out and new ones joins in. With every single batch we encounter, we re-member those popular faces who were either good in studies or sports or other curricular activities. There are some whom we admired. Sometimes, our juniors too looked up to us. “Namma taaregaLu” is a section where we in-“Namma taaregaLu” is a section where we in-“Namma taaregaLu” is a section where we in-“Namma taaregaLu” is a section where we in-terview achievers in their respective fields. terview achievers in their respective fields. terview achievers in their respective fields. terview achievers in their respective fields. Q1: Tell us about your life before Navodaya. Your native place, your school (before JNV), family. Amar: To put in a sentence "My small, beautiful dream world, My Town", the edge of Western Ghats, in Sagar tq. A hill next to our village, one can see Linganamakki Dam, with beautiful view of Sharavathi river backwaters, it has al-ways been mine all time favourite destination. School studied was 2kms away from home, govt middle school, Kannada medium. Lived in a joint family and my sister, Ashwini TS (6th Batch) was at JNVG then. Q2: What did you do after school. How was the transition? [for example, while making friends, adjusting to new environment or was is the same?] A: BE, Comp Science @ SJCE Mysore. Transition phase was very lonely to start with. For some days felt like language (English) was a barrier in the pathway, later got to understand that it's not the language or how fashionably you communicate, but the knowledge and quality of the content which matters a lot. Post realiza-tion, it was natural to make friends and face the all new world. Life in JNV surely helped in boosting up my confidence level. In school there were too many things happening around me, to better adjust to the needs, show confidence when required, obey when it mat-tered etc., Q3: How do you attribute your successful life to JNVG? What are the takeaways from school that you imbibed in yourself? A: First and foremost, I guess, I couldn’t have been an engineer if I had not joined JNV. If not JNV, the education, facilities, opportunities and amenities would have been a dream at that stage of life. One thing which helped for me due to staying in hostel was that I don’t complain about not having something, mainly with respect to food. I can adjust better.

Namma Taaregalu: Amar. T. S.

Q4: You were a Deputy leader during your 11th Standard. Do you believe discipline was necessary? Why? Do you still follow (might be in a different perspective)? A: Discipline? May be, but surely leadership quality was required. I should say I am more disciplined now than I was at school. C'mon! We were kids then. I don't expect one to be very disciplined at that age anyways, that's what childhood is about.

Q5: Many believe that your wife Pallavi is also JNV alumni. Tell us about her. Where did you meet her? A: She is a JNV alumni in spirit! Marrying her was one of the very good things happened to me in life. Ours was arranged marriage.

Amar T S is from 8th batch.

Topper in his 10th and 12th. Deputy

leader of the school and used to par-

ticipate in track events. He is the talk

of town after the company he was

working for, Gluster Inc., got acquired

by Red Hat for 136 million dollars. Also

he was our Alumni president for last 2

years.

Page 8

Q6: Now that you are a father, do you wish to make your son study in JNVG, if he were given a chance? A: Looking at the type of education kids get in so called national / international schools, I feel I should allow him to go to JNV. But thinking more about it, I feel, it defeats the purpose of building Navodayas. It should get better util-ized by more *innnn----needneedneedneed* kids, who otherwise would miss education. So, given a chance, I would not send him to JNV and allow that spot to go for more in-need kid. Q7: As you were involved in regular exercises/sports for 7 years in JNV? Do you think you would have been keen about sports other-wise. How do you maintain your fitness. A: I would have liked sports, i.e., only cricket if I were outside. Surely the wide variety of sports we played and got interested in while at school would never be possible otherwise. My fitness? Sleep well, eat properly, on time, and mentally don't stress myself. When possible bi-cycle to office. Go for some treks in an year. That's it I guess. Q8: Which is the most memorable incident from JNV that you want to share with us A: One event? C'mon!! Whole life @ JNV is memorable. Mess storeroom group on food group responsibility. Eating 10s of Idlys for breakfast. Playing volleyball with Arifulla sir and team... Scoring 2/25 in Rajani madam's music test, travelling for sport meets. OMG!!! So many.... Q9: Tell us about a difficult situation/time that you went through? A: Loosing my Dad! That too shortly after com-ing out of JNV. Well, life moves on, so am I. Q10: What is the biggest turning point in your life? A: Sorry, can't mention it here :-) Just kidding! Surely joining JNVG.

Q11: How do you like to spend your free time? A: Sleeping. Travelling. Reading. Thinking :-) Q12: What do you want to achieve in your life? How do you plan to achieve it? A: Write a good book! Travel the globe! Be a good person! How to achieve it? Try to make free time, with enough money in the bank ac-count to spend on travelling :-) Q13: If you were asked to go back to the past and change one thing, what will you change? And why? A: Nothing. Not even a small thing :-) I am a happy person now :-) I always did what was good according to me at that point in life. Surely don’t regret a thing. Q14: Given a chance to thank someone in JNV, who will it be and why? A: Almost all the staff of JNV. Q15: Future plans? A: Make more money, without compromising with life (ie, family, friends, health). Get in-volved in nation building if possible, mostly in tourism related area. Q16: What is success according to you? A: Being happy at the end of the day is success for me. Q17: What would you advise the people who look up to you (students)? A: Aim high, keep expectations low, be happy with everything you have, “It’s a wonderful life”. Q18: Do you have any final words or any ad-vice for us? A: Not much! You guys are doing a great job, keep it up.

Ever since our childhood, whenever our par-ents declined us with all the things that we

asked for, we might have thought, “ను ముం& &ూడNవను ఆద K<, తుం; దుడుN దు5. ఆK< ఇవ< . తూ“ Well then, welcome

to the club. We are earning now, తుం; ఏల. అదూ' Okay. It is quite natural that we tend to

spend the amount on lot things that seem lur-ing at the moment. Long bike rides, long phone calls, parties, shopping, travel etc. And I

would say, “ఇIగ మR iY ఏ> ముద4 అదK< మR i5!ర“ But there has to be a limit, because life is always filled with surprises. Money is one those things which drive the “Dude, where’s my money?” - One inevitable

dialogue that comes from almost every one of

us. It is literally impossible to track back our

spending. After this blunder, we decide on sav-

ing money. Then, why don’t we start now? Re-

member it is never too early to save, but only

too late. Saving money is like pretending that

we never saw it. The benefits of saving money

in our early life are exponential.

Why should we do this? Why should we do this? Why should we do this? Why should we do this?

1. We are young and we don’t fall sick often as we are less prone to diseases. No hospi-tal, no money.

2. No marriage, no necklace, no school fee - in short no real commitments.

3. We get higher compound interest for money saved for a longer time.

4. We are unorganized about our money.

What should we do, then? What should we do, then? What should we do, then? What should we do, then?

1. Set up a Recurring Deposit account with at

least 20% of your salary. Remember auto-

matic deductions are only friends. You

would appreciate yourselves after looking

at the savings.

2. Set a budget and track your spending. Use tools like Buxfer. It is not time consuming and you would know where your money flows.

3. Create a Fixed Deposits for an year if you think that the money will be there in the account. You can dissolve it at any time of emergency and get a better interest rate.

4. Cut off on entertainments. Stop all the ser-vices that you are not using.

General Savings Tips:General Savings Tips:General Savings Tips:General Savings Tips:

1. Make money work for you. Setting up an

emergency fund is for money access when-

ever you need it. Investing in PPF (Public

Provident Fund) is a good way to start for

long term.

2. Do not possess Credit Cards if you cannot

pay your bills on time. If you can’t pay it

then you are spending more than what

you can afford. But remember Credit card is

of great use if you pay on time.

3. Save on household energy. Do not waste

electricity/water/food. Being mindful about

the way energy used will help you signifi-

cant amount.

4. Do not buy something that you don’t need.

When you have ample cash which is of

least importance to you, then plan on in-

vesting it in Stock Market and Real estate. It

is risky, yet fruitful.

I I I I was browsing for some of the greatest mov-ies of SANDALWOOD and came across this master piece 'School Master'. Released in the year 1958, this is the first ever kannada movie to celebrate Silver Jubilee.

The movie was well appreciated across the nation and went on to grab couple of Na-tional Awards like All India Certificate of Merit for Third Best Feature film and National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada

Popular Kannada film producer, actor, director and founder of ‘Padmini Pictures,' B. R. Pan-thulu made this movie. Though the original story was in Marathi, written by a famous poet, B. R. Panthulu came up with film ver-sions of this story in various languages.

The CastThe CastThe CastThe Cast - B. R. Panthulu, Udaykumar, Sivaji Ganeshan, B. Saroja Devi. Narasimha Raju

The StoryThe StoryThe StoryThe Story

First part of the movie showcases glorified teacher - student relationship. A simple teacher with high integrity struggles to handle undesirable practices of school managements, and naughty irregular and messed up chil-

dren. But soon wins the hearts of children and their parents with his methods of teaching and leading by example. On one occasion he forgives a student who steals his Pen and in-sists him to keep it after getting caught. The master lives with wife and children on bare minimum income, still helps poor students fi-nancially.

Years pass by, his sons and daughter are mar-ried and well settled but he is in abject penury with financial debts beyond his ability to pay-back. The debts are of daughter's marriage dowry, sons college expenses and his unques-tionable generosity to help students. So his only house is under mortgage. His sons stay away from all this buckling under pressure from their wives and in-laws.

The later part of the movie gets more emo-tional with the old teacher and his wife, asked to live separated, in their daughter and sons house respectively.

Finally the house is on auction and in sudden turn of events, the same student who stole the pen years ago, who is a Police Officer now, buys the home and surprises the old master offering him the house back. With happy tears in every one's eyes movies goes 'shubam'.

MusicMusicMusicMusic: Few songs in the movie like Athi madura, Ellaru nammavare are very melodious and will be forever. Timing of the songs in the story are very apt too.

A movie with lot of social messages, wonder-ful acting and various dimensions of human relationship dynamics just impressed me so much that, i voted 9 on IMDB.

Give it a try everybody if you have missed this.
