These pre-vocational resource materials have been developed by Vocational Training Queensland (VTQ) to support short-term interventions for students requiring accelerated literacy and numeracy skill development. The goal for students who undertake the courses is increased learner confidence,
re-engagement with education and improved academic outcomes
To support successful outcomes for a wide range of students, the resources have been developed at four levels, aligned with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). Further mapping has been
provided in each work journal to assist facilitators to understand where students are performing in relation to the Australian Curriculum general capabilities in Literacy and Numeracy and, where
relevant, the Australian Curriculum content descriptions in English and Maths.
For more information regarding the use of these resources, please contact VTQ at: [email protected]

Calculate the best buy It is important to calculate which item gives you the best value for money. Everyone loves a bargain!
When items are in a pack, you need to work out how much each item costs. Then you can compare the price of each pack to decide which item is cheaper.
Which chips are better value?
3 packet of chips costs $1.80 so to work out the cost of each bag:
Total price ÷ number of items = price per item $1.80 ÷ 3 = 60c
5 packets of chips costs $3.50 so to work out the cost of each bag:
Total price ÷ number of items = price per item $3.50 ÷ 5 = 70c
60c per packet is cheaper. Answer: 3 packets for $1.80 is better value.
To calculate the price of each item:
Total price ÷ number of items = price per item
3 for $1.80
5 for $3.50

$2.50 so to work out the cost of each bag:
Total price ÷ number of items = price per item $2.50 ÷ 180 = 0.0138
This is 1.38 cents
1.26 cents is cheaper. Answer: The 300mL bottle is better value.
