he DRAGONLANCE® World has gained a life of its own. There is no greatermeasure of its strength than in the number of people it has inspired.

i w a s first introduced to Karen's work four years before I started at TSR,Inc.—when the DRAGONLANCE Saga was but a dream of mine. I had then been—andstill am—impressed with her Atlas of Middle-earth) both for focus of graphic realizationand its scholarly accuracy in detail. You can imagine my joy at learning that this samegreat talent would turn her attentions to the world of Krynn.

It is with that same joy that I introduce her work to you.As I read through her words and pore over her lovingly crafted maps, I returned once

more to the land of draconians and the Silvanesti. I followed again the paths the heroestrod and remembered all that I had thought . . . and dreamed . . . and felt. Even I (whohave lived this world for the last four years) was often surprised by the new insights thebook brought to me. Karen has captured in her own special way that magic that I havealways felt in the DRAGONLANCE World.

For those who enjoyed the novels, I think this book will bring you the same feeling itbrought to me. And for those of you who play the ADVANCED DUNGEONS &DRAGONS® games, this book will be a special treat. Here are the maps of Krynn thatwill enable you to continue your adventures. This book opens the way for years ofcampaigning.

It was a great pleasure to work with Karen, small though my contribution may havebeen. I promised to check everything for accuracy and only found that / had made a fewmistakes which she caught.

I would write more, but Tasslehoffis impatient. I promised him the first copy, and he'stired of waiting. . . . I am sure you understand.

Here, then, is the true DRAGONLANCE world.

Tracy HickmanJuly 1987

Acknowledgments

Although the quality of accuracy (or inaccuracy) of theproduct within these pages rests entirely with the author, the work could never have been completed without theencouragement and assistance of many people:

My husband, Todd, associate professor of geography, who once again provided insights and suggestions regard-ing physical geography for the regional and thematicmaps. Of even more importance was the continuing sacri-fice of the entire family, all of whom endured late mealsand a grouchy wife and mother when the days were tooshort, and who pitched in to help.

All the marvelous people we met in Johnson City, Ten-nessee, during the 1986/87 school year while Todd was avisiting professor at East Tennessee State University.Their friendliness made us feel at home in a very shorttime, and prevented my being a house-bound hermit whonever left computer and drafting table.

Past mentors—especially Beatrice Frank, my juniorhigh school art teacher; and James M. Goodman, my pro-fessor of cartography and thesis director at the Universityof Oklahoma. With each publication, I am increasinglythankful for their marvelous instruction.

The personnel of TSR who answered questions (andposed them), and continue to be enthusiastic in their sup-port of the project. Special thanks are due to Harold John-son, who initially suggested The Atlas of theDRAGON LANCE® World and who was my contact forseveral months. Jean Black also kept me going when thetask seemed overwhelming in the midst of two majormoves, as well as Mary Kirchoff and Dave Sutherland, both of whom saved my life several times in the last stagesof the production of this work.

The authors and illustrators of the wholeDRAGONLANCE series. Their work made this boththe easiest and most difficult project I have completedthus far, because of the sheer wealth of information andmaterials available. The greatest thanks, however, are dueto Tracy Hickman, who never once said he was too busyto talk when he received my unannounced phone callsand who always came up with the answers, being cheeryall the while.
