Foreword
As a player, I love the social situations. They give me a chance
to really see who my character is, what she is like, what she won't put
up with, and how she handles herself. Crawling through dungeons,
facing off against countless enemies and rolling lots of dice are all im-
portant aspects of the game, and they can help to develop a character
but sometimes even the players need to have a break from all the near
death experiences and see what happens when their character gets en-
tered in a pie eating contest, has a chance to arm wrestle the tavern
champion or watch as a duke and notable cook face off for a cake bak-
ing competition.
Taverns are typically where adventurers meet, and their travels have
them visit so many different ones while they are on the road. Why not
play that up? Some of my most memorable gaming moments were
seemingly inconsequential interactions, like the reaction of a traveling
companion when my character tried to have a bite of food off his
plate, the longing looks of a tavern guard and his companion’s bitter
remarks afterwards, or the look on a tavern owner’s face when I
emerged from my room with a cougar animal companion that showed
up in the night.
We are taking some of our favorite taverns from our games and build-
ing them up for you to use in your campaigns. Alter them, adapt
them, and use them to give your players a little taste of life
when they aren’t fighting for their lives.

The Tavern
Approaching the small building stone building your eyes are
drawn to the stained glass windows which depict various
images of red and white roses. As you open the solid wood-
en door the smell of fine food wafts out to greet you.
Dim and somewhat romantically lit, the seating in this small
tavern is comprised mostly of small tables with two chairs,
though a series of larger tables line one wall. The smaller
tables are laid with blood red linens, covered with a light
lace while the larger wooden tables are separated by tall
wooden screens painted in blood red and accented with
swirling white designs, creating an intimate atmosphere: per-
fect for a romantic evening or discrete business deal-
ings. Several couples are seated at the various small tables,
enjoying quiet conversation and a meal. It is difficult to tell
if the larger tables are occupied, which seems to be the point
of the tall screens.
At regular intervals along the stone walls, ornate wall sconces
play host to blood red candles, the wax dripping the length
of the candle before settling in a pool at the base of the can-
dle stick. Several small fireplaces with ornate stone work
hearths have a crackling fire burning within and a large vase
of red and white roses is placed on the mantle of each one.
A door in the back of the tavern leads to a small hallway
with three other doors. Both of the bedrooms have a large
soft bed, a claw foot tub, a solid storage chest, two comforta-
ble arm chairs, and a small table with two chairs. The fur-
nishings are well made and the linens are of an excellent
quality. Both rooms have been decorated in the same
blood red and white fabrics as the main part of the tavern. A
vase of fresh red and white roses sits on the table, and taste-
ful art is hung throughout the room. The third room is a
storage room filled with various brooms, mops, candles and
extra food stores for the kitchen.
The Food
The kitchen at the Angelic Imp generally has two specials each
day. The menu typically offers foods such as grilled swordfish
over long thin pasta with a lemon butter sauce, a saffron-tomato
seafood stew (featuring prawns, mussels and calamari), roasted
duck with a smoked meat, risotto and a side of seasonal vegeta-
bles, seared lamb medallions with eggplant tapenade, tuna steaks
served with a jasmine rice, or prime rib served with roasted red
potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
The portions are satisfying, but never huge, and patrons don’t
come here looking for typical tavern fare. Barkeep Bellamy
Brook has an almost magical knack for making drinks and the
bar is stocked with a variety of expensive wines and liqueurs.
Without a doubt the food and drinks are exquisite, and the bill
reflects the high quality.
Rumours
Rumours aren’t common inside this tavern as the patrons speak
in hushed tones and are more interested in each other than they
are in the local gossip. If Bellamy knows any secrets, he isn’t
eager to share them and if asked, he smiles a charming smile.
“Here at the Angelic Imp we always support a person’s right to
privacy. Besides, everyone is entitled to a secret or two, don’t
you think? Now how about a drink?” What rumours you do
hear likely exist outside the tavern. Roll a d4 on “Table 1– Ru-
mours”, or select one that suits your players.
Events
With the appeal of this tavern being its quiet and intimate atmos-
phere, rowdy gatherings and boisterous games of cards are unu-
sual, but that doesn’t mean people about town aren’t getting into
trouble here. Chose an event from “Table 2—Events”, or for a
little randomness, roll a d6 and use the corresponding number.
