These were some of the issues that were discussed. By attending this Conference my knowledge had widened. I interacted with a wide range of people from other cultural backgrounds. It was a great learning experience for me. The CISA Conference is held once a year . It has been happening for the past four years. It serves as an International Body for students and it highlights student’s concerns. This Conference is the only one of its kind in the world

Almond Milk Recipe

Try this delicious alternative to

traditional milk….

Soak a cup of almonds overnight and

peel off the skin the next day. Blend

together one cup of soaked almonds

2

with 2 cups of water. Strain off the

almond milk through a muslin or sieve.

You can drink as it is or add some

warming spices such as cinnamon,

ginger and cardamom. Another idea is

to blend almond milk with some

soaked dates.

Promotional Panel, Ombudsmen Panel, work rights and ethics. Issues discussed included that if someone does not want to hire you, the code word is , “ Sorry but you are over-qualified.” This is an abuse of Work rights as one should not be called for an interview in the first place if one is over-qualified . For Health and Promotion the fact was made known that most students are young and vulnerable and fall in love easily. As a result, females especially end up with partners who tend to abuse them physically and emotionally.

providing my ideas and thoughts. The learning needs and learning styles of others is taken into consideration in my clinical practice and I encourage others to undertake new skills and seek further knowledge within their scope of practice. This is inclusive of the patient and their significant others in the provision of health promotion and education for the delivery of personal care. As a professional Enrolled Nurse I act with integrity in both my personal and professional activities. I liaise with the Registered Nurse for the delegated care to ensure positive outcomes. The role of the Enrolled Nurse in the delivery of excellent standard of practice and professional performance, along with respect and integrity within the health profession is vital. An excellent standard of practice is maintained by assessment of the patient’s holistic needs, recognising each person as an individual. The commitment to safe and high quality of care is provided to the complex patient under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse. Cultural, professional and personal respect is a value I regard highly. All people I come in contact with are provided with respect and treated with dignity as I ask in return. The opinions and experience of others are valued with active listening and in return

manner when identified, and in turn demonstrates my values as an Enrolled Nurse. This standard of practice was proven when I was awarded Enrolled Nurse of the Year 2010/11 with SA Health Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards. I have been a Nurse for 38 years and have always continued to up-skill my qualification to endeavour to deliver a high standard of practice. My current qualification is ENAD (Enrolled Nurse Advanced Diploma), with specialty recognition as a Nephrology Nurse. This provides me with the experience to offer support and also an educational role both for nursing staff and patients.

Staff Profile… who knew!

Bernie’s Book Review The Secret Garden has been regarded as a children’s literary classic since its publication in 1911, this was one of my favourite books as a child and now as an adult it’s still up there.

The story focuses on a young girl, Mary Lennox, who grew up in India with her parents as her father was in the British Imperial Army. She is quite a sullen and spoilt young girl, used to servants feeding and dressing her and generally getting everything she wanted. After her parents’ sudden deaths she returns to England to live with her last surviving family member, a reclusive uncle who lives in a large manor on the foggy moors of England. The house has hundreds of rooms, most of which are never open and to this young girl, seem full of mystery and potential adventure.

The reason this book was my favourite as a child was the magic weaved through out the pages. It explores the themes of transformations and personal growth, not judging others based on what you merely see and looking to all things in life and nature as a source of happiness and energy. The overall theme of the book is that, all of life is a garden; fill your life with beautiful things, grow what you want, and shape it how you want it to be.

While winter is a time to conserve energy and reduce activity, spring is a time of regeneration, new beginnings, and a renewal of spirit.

The five elements refer to wood, fire, earth, metal, and water in Eastern philosophy. The Principle of the Five Elements (known as the Wu Hsing in Chinese) describes the flow of Qi and the balance of yin and yang.

According to the principle, all change – in the universe and in your body – occurs in five distinct stages. Each of these stages is associated with a particular time of year, a specific element in nature, and a pair of organs in the body. Change links together the seasons of the year, aspects of nature, and your body's organs and bodily processes. A practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine uses this principle to diagnose and treat health problems, linking specific foods, herbs, and acupuncture points to the restoration of yin- yang and Qi.

2

Spring is the ideal time for cleansing and rejuvenation for overall health and well-being. As spring is represented by the wood element and includes the liver and its complementary organ, the gallbladder, these two organs are usually the primary targets for springtime cleansing and health regimens.

According to the philosophy of Chinese medicine, the liver is responsible for the smooth flowing of Qi (energy) throughout the body. When the liver functions smoothly, physical and emotional activity throughout the body also runs smoothly.

Seasonal acupuncture treatments can serve to tonify the inner organ systems and can correct minor annoyances before they become serious problems. Ask the friendly staff at Aspects of Healing about a consultation to see how acupuncture can help you stay healthy this spring!

This timely book, written by William Barnes, explains how we can work together to achieve true prosperity for all by changing what the author, William Barnes, calls the moral economy of our societies. The moral economy is those exchanges of vales, not goods or money, that happen when people met each other on the street or at work, or get together in our homes, parks, malls, and neighborhoods. All economies have a moral dimension to them. The moral economy of materialist society, especially its consumerist form, is built upon and expresses values that encourage actions and is built upon and expresses values that encourage actions and attitudes that are selfish, self-serving and self-centered. This is supposed to generate wealth, security and well being. But, except for a fortunate few, it does just the opposite. This must be changed. The moral economy that William Barnes envisions works through three core principles: sharing, service, and self-sacrifice. That is, sharing wealth, serving others, and

2

sacrificing personal interests for a common good. Individuals willing to share, serve and sacrifice act as a powerful catalyst to create a society that is truly prosperous.

Evidence Based Practice What is evidence? Evidence in its broadest sense includes everything that is used to determine or demonstrate the truth of an assertion. Evidence = Information, whether from patient, literature, or experience. Evidence-based Healthcare (EBHC) ‘is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.’ Sackett 1996. Why EBHC?

> Assists health professionals in their clinical decision making > Enhances the ability of health professionals to provide consistent and appropriate care > Improves outcomes for patients/clients, while reducing the risk of clinical adverse events
