How to Succeed in Chemistry1.Be on time!

Walking in with the bell will result in tardy. You must be seated, ready to start when the bell rings.

2.You must try!Look at least 3 sources before asking for help (book, notes, shoulder partner, etc). Think and struggle before asking for help!

3.Ask specific questions!Never say “I don’t get this”. Be specific with your questions.

4.Never copy work!Never copy someone else’s work as your own, if caught, disciplinary actions will take place according to the class syllabus (detention and score of zero). You may not take a picture of the solutions shown in class.

5.Start ahead!Assignments are not meant for you to start the night before they are due. Use them as your review in daily basis.

6.You must study! You can’t succeed in this course if you don’t study. Seek for tutoring if extra help is needed.

7.Be organized!Organize your work and always turn in your best work. Scattered responses will not be scored. Use a pencil at all times.

8. Check the solution!Always check your work before turning in for credit. Solutions will be available in class for you to look at. Redo the problems you have missed and study them!

9. Use your time wisely!Do not waste your class time. You must be able to use your independent time wisely! Save your conversation for passing periods. Put your cell phones away.

10. TRUST THE TEACHER and BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!!

MOST IMPORTANTLY…HOMEWORK

MeansWORK you do at HOME

If you are not willing to spend time at home, you will NOT succeed in this class.

Chapter Guideline and Due DatesThis is a rough guideline of how chapters are organized in Mrs. Im’s chemistry class. Number of days for each chapter is divided based on district pacing guideline (roughly 5 – 10 days per chapter, depending on the difficulty). Each quarter will consist of about 5-6 chapters, which concludes with a district final exam. It is recommended that students are spending about 30minutes per day at home to review and be prepared for the next day’s material. If you believe that your child is struggling, please advise him or her to attend tutoring session during lunch to receive extra help.

At Norco High School,All learners will engage in higher level of learning through the use of academic

language, involvement of structured student interactions and the ability to clearly communicate learning tasks.

Key to success is ORGANIZATION and TIME-MANAGEMENT!!

CHEMISTRY TROUBLESHOOTING & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONProblem or Question Solution or Answers

I failed a test. You did not study. Studying does not mean reading your notes. Studying means DOING. Doing your worksheets over again, rewriting your notes into another notebook, studying the chapters from the textbook, using flash cards for vocabulary and other problems are all ways of actively studying. Studying is not a passive task. A sweat should be broken. If you can’t explain a concept in sentences, you are not ready. Keep studying. BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY!!!!!

But I did study and I still failed! Did you seek extra help the day then you didn't understand something? When did you start studying? Your homework period each day should be half studying and half homework. Studying is a cumulative process, not something you spend an hour on the day before the test. . If you can’t explain a concept in sentences, you are not ready. Keep studying. BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY!!!!!

I didn’t have enough time to finish the work

Worksheets – assigned on the FIRST day of chapter and are due on the day of test. Did you finish the worksheets prior to starting the lab? Did you work on the worksheets after each class period at home?Quest – uploaded on the first day of chapter and are due on the night before the test. Did you work on quest after working on the worksheets EACH DAY? You should NEVER start on quest the night before the test. IT IS NOT MEANT FOR YOU TO FINISH IN ONE SEATING.Lab Report – we use 3 days in class to work on lab report. 1st day of lab – pre-lab, collect data, start on lab report. 2nd day of lab – lab report. 3rd day of lab – lab reports/ other work catch up. Are you spending class time wisely to work on your lab report? 3 days along with class time, should be more than enough to finish lab reports.

I couldn't do the homework Did you seek extra help? Have you seen the key to compare? Did you read about it in the text book? Did you download the powerpoints online to go over the notes again? ASK FOR HELP!!!!

I don't have the time to come for help.

Make the time. There is always time. Tutoring is always available IN CLASS as well as during lunch M-F. Academic Saturday School is also available on Saturdays 8am – 12pm @ N114.

I need extra credit Extra credits are not offered individually. You will need to make sure all your assignments are done fully and correctly. Extra credits may be hidden in the total points for each assignment. Before you seek for extra credit, RECEIVE HELP to turn in the work correctly and ON TIME!

Can I pass the class if I do ALL my work from now on?

I cannot foretell your grade. You will have to continue to turn in perfect work to receive as many points as possible to help out your grade. Just because you turn in your assignments does not mean your grade will improve. You have to make sure they are DONE RIGHT! I’m not a fortune teller; I can’t tell if you will pass. It all depends on the quality of work you turn in and your performance on the tests!

Can I make up zeros in my grade?

If you received a zero on any categories in the gradebook, you have missed your chance to make them up. You need to be able to know when they are due, and be able to makeup the work on time if missing for any reason. Your grades are your responsibility. You must utilize time well in class to finish the assignments on time, ask for help and be able to make sure they are done correctly. KNOW your responsibility as a student.

Chemistry is a very demanding course.

Students with weak math skills or poor self study skills will not do well in this course. Students who must be told when to do their work and must be checked on daily if that work is done will not do well in this course. Students who procrastinate and cram for tests the night before will not do well in this course. Students who expect all testing topics to be covered in class with a review guide that mimics the test will not do well in this course. Students who are just here for the "A'" instead of the pursuit of knowledge will not do well in this course. Students will be held responsible for a lot of self study, self learning outside of the classroom with the lectures building upon that knowledge.

Students who have not completed the self study before lectures will not achieve from the lectures the level of knowledge needed for the assessments. Tests will be about 3 part assessment with free responses that will be Chemistry math word problems and explanation of concepts. If there are multiple choice, true / false and matching are hardly ever used and there is always none of these along with you may choose more than one as choices to keep guessing to a minimum. Also all math problems will be worked every way possible with those wrong answers becoming choices to keep the use of "calculator guessing" to zero.

In summary, those students who are here to learn the subject of Chemistry to the highest degree of their ability are self motivated and are more concerned about the skills and knowledge needed for their future classes such as college will pass this class with a grade that corresponds to that knowledge level. Those students who are just here for a grade and expect to learn all that they need during class time only with me teaching them the test will not do well at all in this course. Parents / Guardians will be notified of their Student’s Progress by the following methods. 1. Standard School reports, progress report and semester report cards.2. Parents and students who register at "Q/ Parent connect" will be able to view grades and attendance via "Q" in real time.3. All assignments and assessments graded will be posted to the best of my ability by the next few school days so that "Q" will be up to date as much as possible. Comments about student missing work and due date will be posted as warnings. 4. Also please note that e-mail will be the best way for communication rather than phones.

Chemistry Lab Report InstructionsAll of the following should be checked prior to turning in a lab report. Any areas that are lacking will result in a lowered grade. The lab write-up must be typed using a 12 pt font. Ruler must be used and lab report must be fully done to be graded. Incomplete report will be returned back to you to be done for late credit and will NOT be graded. 3 days are given after the due date to be received for late credit. After 3 days, the grade will be entered with a zero.

Name (You & your partners)Date of lab (right hand corner)

Title (top center, numbered, underlined)

1. Purpose: Paraphrase or rewrite the purpose of the lab so that the reader understands why you are doing the lab in 1 or 2 complete sentences. Do not simply restate the title. If the experiment involves a chemical reaction, include the equation.2. Procedure: (When required)In experiments where you are required to write your own procedure, make sure you write the steps clearly.3. Hypothesis: (When required)In experiments where you are required to write your own hypothesis, clearly state what you predict will happen in the experiment. 4. Data: Include quantitative observations only. Be neat and include a data table when appropriate.Record data to the proper numbers of significant figures based on the instrument used (ex. All digits on a digital display should be recorded. For measuring devices such as rulers, graduated cylinders, and triple beam balance, record all known digits plus one estimated digit.)Label data correctly with correct units.Use an appropriate format for the data table such as the one given in the lab handout. No cut outs will be accepted from the handout.5. Observations:Include qualitative observations such as color, appearance, etc. Do not include interpretation. Do not jump to conclusion (ex. Don’t assume a liquid is water based on its appearance).6. Graphs: Title your graph. (ex. Temperature vs. Time, where the temperature depends on the time.) Label and include units on axes (ex. “Mass, g” ) Choose a scale that fills the graph paper using convenient increments, such as multiples of 1, 5, 10.Draw a smooth curve/line unless otherwise instructed (don’t just connect the dots).7. Calculations: Show one example of each type of calculation, step by step. Show formulas, then substitute in numbers with proper units. Answer with proper units and significant figures. Check calculations carefully.8. Questions and answers:

Copy the question, or answer completely and correctly. ONE SENTENCE ANSWER WILL NEVER BE ACCEPTED.9. Conclusion/Sources of Error:Discuss your sources of error and comment on the % error, if applicable. (In discussing the sources of error, you should include what may have gone wrong in the lab and how it may have affected your results. Be specific!!! You should focus only on unavoidable instrumental and experimental error. Misreading the instrument and miscalculations are never included in the sources of error.)

Evaluate your hypothesis based on the actual results you obtained.Summarize what you’ve learned from the lab in a sentence or two. (No personal opinion. Don’t just restate the title, purpose, and/or procedure of the lab.)

Rubric will always be provided on each lab handout. Lab report must done in the same order as the rubric. Based on the rubric below, take a look at the sample report on back of this page.

IF PART OF ANY QUESTION IS NOT ANSWERED, THE REPORT WILL NOT BE GRADED. IT WILL BE RETURNED BACK TO YOU TO REDO FOR LATE CREDIT. LATE REPORT WILL

BE ACCEPTED UNTIL 3 DAYS AFTER THE DUE DATE. Title 1ptPurpose 1ptData 4ptsGraph 4ptsCalculation 2ptsQuestions 3ptsSources of Error 2ptsConclusion 2ptsTotal 19pt

Absent on the day of the lab? Must show up to make up the lab during 2 lunches after the day it was held. (must be present as

Sample Lab ReportWhat Not to Do Exemplary

Title (1 pt) Experiment #7: Using a Candle to Heat Water

Purpose (1 pts) To heat water with a candle. The purpose of this experiment is to measure the temperature of a 25.0 mL sample of water in a test tube while heating with a candle.

Data (4 pts) Time, Temperature,

0 2030 27.160 33.290 41.2

Data Table A. Time and Temperature of waterTime, s Temperature, °C0 20.030 27.160 33.290 41.2

Graph (4 pts) Graph Plant Growth Time vs. Height

Calculations (2 pts) 1. 25 x 1 = 25 g 1. Calculate the mass of water being used. Assume density of water is 1.00 g/mL.

25 mL x 1.00 g = 25 g mL

Questions…#1 & 2 (3 pts)

1. 41.2 °C2. use a larger candle or hold it closer to the flame

1. What is the hottest temperature reached by the water in your test tube?

The water reached 41.2°C.2. What could be done to make the temperature rise faster?

Two ways to make the temperature rise faster is to use a candle with a larger wick or use a smaller volume of water in the test tube. It might help it heat faster if the test tube is held at a specific part of the flame.

Sources of Error/Conclusion (4 pts)

We read the thermometer wrong. We may have spilled a little water after measuring it. We learned a lot about how a candle heats up water in this experiment and we had a lot of fun!

In this experiment, a major source of error was that the test tube was not held close enough to the flame. The way this would affect the results is that the water would heat up more slowly. We accidentally spilled some water in transferring water to the test tube. The decreased amount of water would cause the heating to be faster. If the thermometer was inaccurate, it would also increase the inaccuracy of our results.

In conclusion, we saw the water temperature increase proportionally with time. Some groups observed that the water heated up faster because the test tube was closer to the flame.

Laboratory Safety RulesIn this class you will frequently perform laboratory activities.  While no human activity is completely risk

free, if you use common sense and some of your science knowledge, you will encounter no problems. Chemical sense is an extension of common sense.  Laboratory safety won't happen by memorizing a list of rules, any more than a perfect score on a written driver's test ensures an excellent driving record.  The true “driver's test” of chemical sense is your actual conduct in the laboratory.

The following safety rules apply to all laboratory activities.  For your personal safety and that of your classmates, always follow these guidelines in the laboratory.  I will point out any special safety guidelines that apply to each activity.

If you understand the reasons behind them, these safety rules will be easy to remember and to follow.1. Perform laboratory work only when your teacher is present.  Unauthorized or unsupervised laboratory

experimenting is not allowed. No horseplay in the lab!2. Always read and become familiar with each laboratory activity before starting.3. Listen at the start of any lab for any specific cautions that the teacher may describe for a particular lab

activity.4. Know the location and use of all safety equipment in your laboratory.  This includes the safety shower,

eye wash, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket.5. Know the proper fire and earthquake procedures.6. Wear an apron and protective goggles for all laboratory work. Tie back loose hair. And wear close-toed

shoes (not sandals or flip-flops).7. Clear your lab station of all unnecessary material such as books and clothing before starting your work.8. Check chemical labels twice to make sure you have the correct substance.  Some chemical formulas and

names may differ by only a letter or a number.9. You may be asked to transfer some laboratory chemicals from a common bottle or jar to your own test

tube or beaker.  Do not return any excess material to its original container unless authorized by your teacher.

10. Avoid unnecessary movement and talk in the laboratory. Listen for instructions.11. Never taste or touch laboratory materials.12. Gum, food, and drinks should not be brought into the laboratory.13. If you are instructed to smell something, do so by fanning some of the vapor toward your nose.  Do not

place your nose near the opening of the container.  Your teacher will show you the correct technique.14. Never look directly down into a test tube; view the contents from the side.  Never point the open end of a

test tube toward yourself or your neighbor.15. Any laboratory accident, however small, should be reported immediately to your teacher.16. In case of a chemical spill on your skin or clothing rinse the affected area with plenty of water.  If the

eyes are affected, use the eye-wash immediately and continue to wash for ten to fifteen minutes or until professional assistance is obtained.

17. When diluting acids, always add acid to water, never the reverse. Combine the liquids slowly with stirring to dissipate any heat generated.

18. Minor skin burns should be placed under cold, running water.19. When discarding used materials, carefully follow the instructions provided.20. Return equipment, chemicals, aprons, and protective goggles to their proper locations.21. The chemical storage area is off-limits!22. Before leaving the laboratory, and in case of emergency, make sure that gas lines and water faucets are

shut off.
