It was almost silent outside as Sam laystill beneath his soft bed covers.

This year, as every year on ChristmasEve, he peeped out towards his bedroomwindow hoping to see or hear theslightest sound of Santa’s arrival.

Page 5: Sam's Sack from Santa

One year he thought he’d heardreindeer’s feet thudding on theroof, but it was only his Dadthumping up their wooden stairs.

On another, he thought he’dheard Santa’s bells, but it washis Dad again, putting out themilk bottles!

Page 6: Sam's Sack from Santa

But tonight, all was very quiet and still. The sky was amazingly clear, full ofwinking stars and a glowing moon.“Perfect for Santa-spotting,” he thought.

So Sam waited and watched … Waitedand watched.

He began to wonder ifSanta had received hisletter asking for a kite.

Page 7: Sam's Sack from Santa

Then he began to worry if Santacould squeeze down the narrowchimney and would he findthe mince pie, sherry andcarrots he had left forhim and his reindeer?

Page 8: Sam's Sack from Santa

Suddenly, the silence was broken by a largethud! Was it Dad again? No, it couldn’t be, hecould hear him snoring down the hallway. Itmmuusstt be Santa! Sam crept to the bedroomwindow and peered towards the gardenbelow. There, right in the middle of thefrost-covered lawn, was a large sack!

“Oh, no,” thought Sam,“he’s missed my chimney!”Sam put on his slippers andtiptoed downstairs andout into the garden.

He looked everywhere in thehope of seeing Santa and hissleigh, but he was nowhereto be seen. Just winkingstars and a glowing moon.

Sam’s disappointment soon disappearedwhen he saw his sack bulging withpresents. He decided to take it indoorsto help Santa, as he was always so busyon Christmas Eve, and now he wouldn’thave to climb down Sam’s chimney.

He could hardly wait to open it andlook inside. Perhaps he would take alittle peep, he thought.

He found his torchand shone it inside.

A kite!Santa had got his letter.Sam tied the sack back up so Mumand Dad wouldn’t know he’d looked.

A large label hung from the end of the string.“But wait a minute,” thought Sam. “That’s not my name!”

On the label, in neat black writing, it read“Billy, love Santa x”

“Billy? Oh no, this isn’t my sack,”he cried.

Page 14: Sam's Sack from Santa

“It must be Santa,” he thought.“I’ll have to hide this sack orhe’ll take it away and I won’tget my kite.” Sam pulled thesack under the stairs andclosed the door.

Just at that moment, a lump of soot felldown the chimney and Sam could hearpuffing and panting from above.

When he was finally brave enough to open it, hecould see another large sack beside the fireplace, soot prints on the floor and the mince pie, sherryand carrots had gone.
