Watching television, making phone calls, buying something in the canteen, and using the internet in a controlled manner: the inmates of the new prisons in Beveren and Leuze-en-Hainaut do all these things via the secured digital platform ‘PrisonCloud’. A first in Belgium’s prisons, and unique in Europe. To accomplish this, the Federal Department of Justice is using Samsung Hospitality TVs, advanced screens suited for desktop-virtualisation, and cloud computing.

Closing the digital gap safelyHow do you prevent the digital gap between the prison and the outside world from becoming too large? The Federal Department of Justice’s answer is the PrisonCloud digital service platform. This platform is being made available via Samsung Hospitality TVs, which have been installed in each cell in the prisons of Beveren and Leuze-en-Hainaut – including the secured areas. The inmates have a hospitality screen, without hard disk, and must identify themselves with a USB key to be granted access to PrisonCloud. Running completely in the back-end (on servers), the digital platform is managed and controlled centrally to guarantee optimal security.

From e-learning to buying cigarettesVia PrisonCloud, the Federal Department of Justice offers a number of services, including e-learning. Restricted use of websites (for example, job sites) is also possible within a highly secure internet environment – social media are not included. To sharpen their computer skills, the inmates can use a virtual desktop with the Windows Office package. For relaxation, there are video-on-demand and digital television. Even phone calls and ordering something in the canteen are among the possibilities. All of these things always take place within a strictly controlled environment. Privileges are granted, but can also be taken away at any time.

Handling responsibilityBenny Goedbloed, PrisonCloud Manager, Federal Department of Justice: “With PrisonCloud, the inmates learn to handle responsibility and to take their lives (although limited within the prison walls) into their own hands. This approach fits perfectly with our mission to prepare inmates for their re-integration into society.”

The Federal Department of Justice partners: e-Bo Enterprises and Samsung

e-Bo Enterprises develops PrisonCloudThe Federal Department of Justice worked on the development of PrisonCloud with e-Bo Enterprises in Ypres. The company specialises in secured platforms for content distribution, and thus provides services for the management of networks, cloud computing and infrastructure. PrisonCloud brings all possible services together into a single digital platform that works easily with existing hardware and software solutions.

e-Bo Enterprises chooses SamsungChristophe Dhaene, CEO: “Samsung was the only player that could carry out the necessary changes in the area of security in a very short timeframe. By this I mean securing USB ports and other interfaces, as well as the remote control, which is now managed entirely by PrisonCloud. The local sales departments gave us expert advice in that process. We’re so satisfied with the collaboration that we’re now testing out other Samsung cloud displays and adapting Samsung tablets so that they can be used in the prison system.”
