Nanocellulose

Nanocellulose's immediate use would seem to be with medical applications as there is a lot of promise in that field. The outcome must show how versatile this sustainable material is. The proposed uses put forward in this project show a bright future for Nanocellulose.

Task Description To produce new ideas and designs for the potential use of nanocellulose.

Practical Application The properties of nanocellulose are unparalleled. Utilizing these was the focus of my design work.

Nanocellulose A polymer derived from wood pulp. Strong, light and cheap. The perfect material for future products.

Aesthetic Properties It’s unjustifiable to make an aesthetical medical device so my designs shifted to commercial.

Final Design Making use of the nanofibrills this design allows for the user to breathe under water.

Using materials considered as wasteyou must design and make an original product or piece of furniture or piece of lighting. You must make sure your project focuses on one or more of the following areas:easy disassembly for future disposal, using only 1 fixing agent (e.g. glue, tape, wire, etc.), combining 2 or more waste materials.

Task DescriptionTo use existing unused products in an interesting way to create a new product.

Upcycling Can be a hit or miss but is about giving a new lease of life to a product that is no longer used.

Practical Function I wanted a very tactile final product that was correctly made, with full use of the original product.

Aesthetic PropertiesI felt that continuing the legacy of the original product was essential in the design process

Final DesignThe design aims to highlight the trays without damaging them, showing off their history

MaterialThe draws were from an unused tool chest and the wood from a derelict pallet crate.

Challenges Separating the decent wood from the nails and rotten pieces and preserving the imprints of the tools.

ProcessCarefully checking for nails and sanding the wood to its finest grain, then simply attaching the L brackets.

Finishes A fine walnut oil to coat the wood and bring out the grain and a spray lacquer to preserve the trays.

Research the market of online furniture retail and choose a brand to be your client. Consider their market, price point, manufacture capabilities and current ranges of products. You must design a new piece of furniture, collection of furniture or product rangefor them. .

Task Description Using self-guided, unrestricted research create a product for the home.

Acoustic Levitation The process of using audio frequencies to produce pockets of low pressure capable of suspending water.

Practical Application Acoustic levitation is real but currently underdeveloped. Through steady research this product could soon be viable.

Aesthetic Properties The design wasn't progressing so a redesign towards high quality materials allowed my project to reach its full potential.

Final Design The final design is an elegant blend of aesthetic beauty and miraculous technology.

When the distance between the cones is set, and the frequency is matched the soundwaves create a standing wave.

This standing wave creates air pockets that do not fluctuate, thus can hold small objects like water droplets.

To design a product that embraces emerging technology and explores the way we interact with these products and lead our lives. This product must be aesthetically desirable for the market. You must choose a brand to design for, therefore the product must reflect your chosen brand.

Task Description Design a piece of furniture for the modern home.

Material I wanted to concentrate on the material to break down the construction of a table to its minimalistic form.

Practical Application A major problem I faced in the design process was dealing with how to rectify an unstable base, whilst maintaining the design integrity.

Aesthetic Properties I wanted elegant weightless simplicity to guide my design process to create a pure form.

Final Design To incorporate simple geometry within a dynamic shape captivating a feeling of instability from the final outcome.

Material Selection 2mm mild steel sheet cut on the water jet and polypropylene as a stand in for glass.

Challenges Rust and burrs on the edge and surface defects all of which needed to be removed.

Process Using various grades of emery cloth I managed to clean up the steel, then spot welding in as few places as possible.

FinishesEnsuring the spiral finish was smooth consistent and protected I meticulously used the emery cloth then sprayed the piece with lacquer.
