My first grandchild. He was an infant and I was 41 years old. I barely had time to catch my breath when this little guy was placed in my arms. It was love at first glance. When Matthew was six months old, he was diagnosed with RSV, a very dangerous respiratory virus. I remem- ber singing "Silent Night" as I gave him breathing treatments. I'm not sure to whom the song was of more comfort, me or him. I remember rocking him and praying and telling him all the things that I hoped for him in his life. On Friday he graduated from West- field High School and again I had to catch my breath when I saw him enter the stadium in his cap and gown. And I still have things that I hope for him and that I want him to remember. I want him to live with purpose, intentionally making a difference in the lives of others. I hope he finds that success in life is not in the zeros on his paycheck but in finding a career that he enjoys and has a passion doing every day. Right now it looks like it will be as a chef after culinary school. I hope he finds the value of kind- ness, to be treated with it and to treat others the way that he wants to be treat- ed. I pray that he hears with his heart...andhe listens to what it has to say.  There is somuch wisdom found deep inside his heartwhere his soul lives.

I pray that the busyness of life and thenoise of naysayers doesn't drown out thevoice that directs him to a life that will bewell lived.

I want him to be who is supposed to be,not always trying to live up to the expecta-tions of others.

I  hope that he always hears, even froma distance, the prayers of his grandmother.

Prayers for protection, wisdom and content-ment.I pray that he keeps his eyes open for thewonder of the little things that will help himto live in the moment, not losing out on thesmiles of today because he is looking intothe unknown of tomorrow.

As I watched Matthew march into thestadium for graduation I know everyoneelse heard "Pomp and Circumstance" whileI heard "Silent night".And I pray he always finds comfort in thathymn and the prayers of his grandmother.

By DON JELLISONReporter EditorWhat’s good for the Goose is good for

the Gander. You’ve probably heard that ageless say-

ing. It wasn’t so Saturday afternoon at therain-soaked Zionsville Baseball Sectional.

When Mother Nature took her firstswing of the day, two very fine pitchers,Westfield’s Chris Ayers and Zionsville’sRJ Wagner, were hooked up in some kindof battle.

Neither team had scored when the um-pires chased the Shamrocks and the Eaglesand their fans to safe quarters as thunderand rain halted the action.

Nearly two hours and 30 minutes later, the teams returned to battle, with Ayers andWagner still on the mound.

Wagner finished retiring the Shamrocksin the third. But in the bottom of the inning,Ayers’ return from the long break was metwith four hits and four runs.

Until this point, Ayers hadn’t allowedan earned run this season.

When the weather hit again at the end ofthe fifth, Zionsville had a 6-1 lead over theHoosier Crossroads champion Shamrocks.

Action is set to resume on Monday at 11a.m. with Hamilton Southeastern and Fish-ers on the diamond. Following that, West-field and Zionsville will finish their game. The championship tilt is set for 7 p.m.

In two innings, Ayers had fanned fourbatters and looked loaded for the task.

He opened the third by hitting a batterand got the next Zionsville hitter on agrounder back to the mound.

Wham! The next four Eagles singledand suddenly Zionsville was on top a 4-0lead.

Westfield got on the board in the top ofthe fifth. Ryan Pepiot singled and went tosecond on an error. He scored on an RBIsingle by Jacob Robinson.

Zionsville scored two more runs in thefourth.

Zionsville replaced Wagner with KellanElsbury, so it will be Elsbury and JulianLytle on the mound when the two teamsresume action on Monday.

Zionsville leads ‘Rocks, 6-1

By DON JELLISONReporter EditorZionsville is going to be a tough out in

the Zionsville Base-ball Sectional.

Easy for me to sayafter the Eagles elimi-nated defending statechampion Noblesvillein the first round andnow have a 6-1 leadover Hoosier Cross-roads Conferencechampion Westfield

after five innings in a weather-delayedgame.

But, kidding aside, this Zionsville teamis tough. Remember it tied with Noblesvillefor second place in the Hoosier Crossroads.

For Westfield to come back on Mondayis going to be tough. Trailing a team likeZionsville is a tough nut to crack.

If Westfield can’t do it – I’m not sayingthe Shamrocks can’t – then it will be up tothe Southeastern-Fishers winner to keep thesectional championship trophy in HamiltonCounty.

Both Southeastern and Fishers, ofcourse, played Zionsville in three-game se-ries during the conference season.

Fishers, which defeated North Centralin the opening round of the sectional, played Zionsville in the Tigers’ last threeregular season games. That was one heck ofa series.

Zionsville won the first game 5-0; lostto Fishers in the second game 1-0 and wonthe third game 3-2 in 12 innings.

Zionsville and Hamilton Southeasternmet in early May. Zionsville won 9-4 and9-8 and then lost to the Royals 3-1.

Southeastern opened sectional play bybeating Carmel.

Zionsville’s only loss in its last eightgames was to Fishers.

Fishers and Southeastern are more con-cerned, right now, with their Monday Mud-sock battle than with Zionsville.

And, Zionsville still has to eliminate avery strong Westfield team. Two inningsare two innings.

Still, Coach Jered Moore has a freighttrain going. It’s going to be tough to shootdown the Eagles.
