Minnesota United continued to build momentum heading into the playoffs with a 1-0 last Saturday over the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Loons got off to an early lead after Kalif Alhassan was taken down in the penalty area, giving United a penalty kick. Christian Ramirez took the kick for Minnesota and got his 12th goal of the season, and his third from the penalty spot. Both teams played patiently, focusing on possession to control the game. The Silverbacks made a late push to try to equalize, but Minnesota’s defense was able hold off the visitors to earn the win and a clean sheet.

United Looks to Finish Strong Against ScorpionsIn the final week of the regular season, Minnesota United will play host to the San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday night. The defending NASL Champion is on the opposite end of the spectrum this season, sitting at the bottom of the standings. The Scorpions have not had an easy finish to the season, as their last four games were against the top five opponents. A tough run of form has seen the Texas side earn only nine points in its last ten matches, making it hungry to end the season on a high note against United.

DISCIPLINARY REPORT

Founded in 2010, the Scorpions made their NASL debut in 2012. In its first year, San Antonio suprised many fans and won the regular season title. However, it lost in the semifinals of the Soccer Bowl playoffs to Minnesota 2-1 on aggregate. The next year looked promising for the Scorpions, but a slow start in the Spring and last-place finish in the Fall dashed the team’s hopes for another title.

Despite the loss of several players during the offseason, the Scorpions added a few key acquisitions to spark their 2014 season. They were able to overcome a slow start last year to win the Fall Championship on goal differential followed by the Soccer Bowl a few weeks later.

The defending Champion had a quiet offseason, acquiring some international players and receiving a couple on loan from Sporting KC of MLS, while preserv-ing the main core of its roster from last year.

ABOUT THE NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE

The North American Soccer League (NASL) is a professional soccer league with eleven teams in the United States and Canada. It is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) as the Division II league in the American league system. Its headquarters are in New York City.

The league is named for the original North American Soccer League. The modern NASL was founded in 2009, and began play in 2011 following a 2010 season that saw NASL and USL teams play in a combined temporary Division II league.

The NASL uses a split-season schedule running from April to early November, with a four-week break in July. The spring and fall champions, along with the two teams with best combined records, meet in a four-team single elimination tournament known as The Championship. The winner of the final claims the Soccer Bowl at the end of the season.

Minnesota United finished the Spring Season with a 3-5-2 record, missing out on its second Spring Championship by six points. Minnesota has already booked its place in the postseason, and is now confirmed as the #3 seed in the playoffs.

The NASL uses split-season format, first implemented in 2013, with separate Spring and Fall Seasons. The winners of the Spring and Fall Seasons along with two remaining teams with the best overall record will play in The Championship, the league’s four-team playoff. In the event the same team wins both the Spring and Fall Championships, the top three teams with the best overall records will join them in The Championship.
