North Park Nights Kicks off with Controversial Art

More than 30 San Diego businesses work together to host North Park Nights, an event organized by a collective of North Park businesses dedicated to promoting arts and culture in the neighborhood.

North Park Nights (NPN) is the pulling together of North Park businesses to continue promoting arts and culture as the foundation of its unique community. The monthly event kicks off this March and will continue to be held on the 3rd Saturday of every month as a way to highlight the local art, culture and businesses in the North Park area.

The first North Park Nights event begins March 21, 2009 at 6pm with "Its Complicated", a group showing featuring controversial themed artwork and events in various businesses and galleries. Monthly events will include "Art at the Core" a look at community art on June 20th, and "Green Scene" for environmental awareness on Sept 19th.

"Arts are the catalyzing force behind revitalization", said Lea Caughlan, Chair of North Park Nights and owner of The Rubber Rose in North Park. "We believe that as business owners we have the unique ability to serve this community by continued promotion, which in turn, encourages the growth and health of all businesses."

North Park Nights includes select businesses from the 805 freeway, to west along University to 28th Street. Many contributing businesses are also located along 30th Street from Polk on the north side, to Upas Street on the south end. Live music performances are featured in local bars including Bar Pink, U-31, and The Office, among others.

NPN is a community-based project supported in part by the San Diego Art Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to building arts and culture in San Diego.

"While most neighborhood revitalizations are built on the backs of artists only to continue on into humdrum mainstream, NPN has a loftier goal, "explained Caughlan. "By working together and truly supporting arts and culture, this revitalization can be carried by the artists with the support of local business into a genuine renaissance where we all see our businesses and the neighborhood as a whole, thrive".

For more information on North Park Nights, calendar of upcoming events and a map of participating businesses visit northparknights.org

At this International Exhibition, we will not have the presen-tation of the Ginger Award. This has been the tradition for the last 10 years. The Ginger Ward, will be presented instead in October dur-ing a special installation, “50 years of Art San Diego.” More on that later. As the President and CEO of the San Diego Art Institute and the living heart of the San Diego Art Department, I have seen the growth of this organization become what it can be. All members should be very proud of the quality and consistency of our regional shows, one foot shows, Southern California Regional Awards Exhibition, and of course, the International Exhibition. We are an unique organization unlike any other in the United States. We function to support the professional growth of the artist, we foster the understanding of the value of the visual arts within the community, and we bring for-ward the value of the visual arts in the core curriculum we offer in schools K-12. This is accomplished through the many programs we offer and by the diligent forward vision of our leadership. It takes movement, progress and funding to ac-

complish these goals. The staff, the Board of Directors, vol-unteers, Friends of the Institute, corporations, and founda-tions have given time, energy, man power, funding, and even sweat, in order to support these goals. We work hard for our artists and our vision every day. It is time that the artist mem-bership as a whole, stand up and become responsible for the success of the International Exhibition beyond the submis-sion of the artwork. The involvement and attendance of our membership, you the artist, is the key to success for this 50th International exhibition of the San Diego Art Institute and the Museum of the Living Artist. Laura Sullivan, Richard Messenger, Joe Nalvin, Elena Loma-kin are a few of the artists already involved in the host com-mittee. Contact them if you are interested in offering your support. Artists FavoritesTwo guest SDAI artists chose their favorite works of art from the Jan. – Feb. 2009 SDAI Exhibit and tell us why…

Richard Messenger (expressionistic painter/photographer) likes: Regional Show: Tim Caton, “Communion”

This was a very engaging wonderful work that any of the leaders of expressionism would delight in...I certainly did. With its two very bold facing figures and a spacial quality between them that seemed to say as much as the faces. Bravo.

One Foot Show: Kathy McChesney, “Who Sir, Me Sir” The matriarchal and generational expression in this highly glazed piece is universal. When I looked at this, I felt like I know this person. The green colors seem to speak of wisdom.

Elena Lomakin (expressive minimalist) likes:Regional Show: Brian Lemke “Uncle Doug”

As an abstract artist I hardly pay any attention to the depiction of a human figure or to portraits, unless they are done in a very minimal or abstract-expressionistic, or primitive way. Yet at the recent (January 24) Juried Show I caught myself looking again and again at the beautifully executed work by Brian Lemke “Uncle Doug” (oil).Something in the turn of the man’s head, the way he is looking, and the whole sobriety and dryness of his image captivated me, making me interested. Creating a relatively small portrait the artist managed to convey the exact mood of uncle Doug, who is

presumably his real uncle and should be both: pleased and proud. Being realistic and impressionistic at the same time, the portrait looks very modern, yet one can see the traces of the simplicity and expressiveness of Van Gogh. Well done! I am very much looking forward to other works by Brian Lemke.

One Foot Show: D.Dodge “Neruda Poetry #1”

My other choice is a lovely piece by D.Dodge “Neruda Poetry #1” (mixed media), chosen for the One-Foot Show. It looks like in this exhibition I am really drawn to something I myself do not do anymore, i.e. figurative work and portraiture. Everything pleases me in “Neruda”: the colors, the background, the woman’s loneliness, the collaged piece of map used so intricately as part of her clothes; but most of all the poetry of her image and the mystery behind it. Whether she is listening to one of Pablo Neruda’s poems or waiting for someone,- we don’t know. The truth is that when it comes to a good work, the words are not necessarily needed: just look and sense. And let the mystery of Art prevail.
