“I’m a single mom, and I have two

handicapped boys. I’m doing the best I can to

support them.”

The Food Bank raised $420K at our 2016 annual gala, Foodtasia: Chefs, Cork & Craft which was held at the Food Bank’s warehouse in April and attended by 500 supporters.

The theme of the event served as an homage to the region’s celebrated chefs, and the event décor reflected a rustic chic theme with weathered wood, earth tones, and vintage pieces.

Guests were treated to craft cocktails and hors d’oeuvres during the opening reception and silent auction, which featured live music by local blues singer, Whitney Shay.

Following the reception, each table of guests was hosted by their own personal chef for the evening who prepared a delicious, multi-course dinner. And the evening’s program was emceed by KUSI News anchors, Lisa Remillard and David Davis. The evening ended with dancing and music by acclaimed cover band, Liquid Blue.

The Food Bank thanks our sponsors, supporters and volunteers who made the evening a great success! All funds raised from the gala will be used to support vital hunger-relief programs including the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program.

Wells Fargo Receives the 2016 Eugene “Mitch” Mitchell Community Hero AwardSteve Bernstein, Business Banking President of Wells Fargo Bank, accepted the Food Bank’s annual Eugene “Mitch” Mitchell Community Hero Award on behalf of Wells Fargo Bank at the Food Bank’s 2016 Foodtasia Gala.

As I write this column, I am overwhelmed by the tremendous support the Food Bank receives from the community every single day.

A senior citizen sent us a check for $5 recently and said, although she had limited means, she wanted to help us make sure children and families did not face hunger.

A youngster who recently had his 6th birthday party asked his friends to bring food and money for the Food Bank instead of birthday presents, because he hated the thought of other kids having to go to bed hungry because their parents did not have enough money for food.

When I meet our donors and hear of such selfless generosity, I am reminded of the adage that one candle can light a thousand. Because it takes a community to support a community, we draw all of our support from you…. you are the San Diego Food Bank because your volunteerism, donations, and support are the backbone of our organization. You enable us to carry out our important mission every single day. For that, I wholeheartedly thank you!

******I also want to express my profound gratitude to everyone who supported our 4th annual Foodtasia Gala. The event was a huge success with more than 500 attendees. It sold out two weeks in advance and raised $420K for our vital hunger-relief programs, including our Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Thank you to our gala chairs, Debra Devine and Jennifer Schwarz, our sponsors, our emcees Lisa Remillard and David Davis of KUSI News, our gala committee, our chef committee, our volunteers, and everyone who attended the event. Mark your calendars! Next year’s Foodtasia Gala will take place on April 29, 2017.

******Another BIG thank you to the community for supporting our School’s Out, Hunger’s Not Summer Food Drive. Thanks also to our food drive partners the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, SDG&E, Albertsons, Vons, and our media partners, CBS 8 and the San Diego Union Tribune. The food drive was a huge success, and all of the food that was donated helped us feed tens of thousands of children living in poverty this summer.

*****Mark your calendars for our AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival taking place on Sept. 10 at Embarcadero Marina Park North on the downtown waterfront. We have fantastic local and national blues acts in our lineup. And this year, we’re excited to announce that Los Lobos will headline the festival! Get your tickets today! Visit www.SDBluesFest.com.

*****Throughout the month of September, the Food Bank will be bringing awareness to the problem of hunger in our community for San Diego’s Hunger Awareness Month. This September, you can help us advocate for the hungry and help the Food Bank raise funds to enroll more elementary school children on our Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Check our website for details.

Remember, one candle can light a thousand. Thank you for your continued support!

Warm regards,

“I need help feeding my sons.”

Maria receives food from volunteers at the Food Bank’s Chula Vista emergency food pantry site.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Raises 277,721 Pounds! This year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive which took place on Saturday, May 14, raised 277,721 pounds of food which is more than double last year’s figure of 110,531 pounds!

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the nation’s largest, single-day food drive operated by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the U.S. Postal Service.

County residents supported the food drive by placing nonperishable food items by residential mailboxes which were picked up by postal workers and delivered to the Food Bank.

The Food Bank wholeheartedly thanks everyone who donated and volunteered for the food drive.

All of the food collected helped the Food Bank meet demand for food assistance over the summer months.

“I’m not working right now because I’m caring for my son full time, but I want to go back to work,” she explains.

Maria previously worked three jobs. She worked at a fast food restaurant, cleaned houses and managed the apartments where she and her family lived before they moved. Her family is currently receiving SSI, but she is applying for the In-Home Supportive Services Program run by the State of California for families with disabled children so that she can return to work.

“I want to go back to work, but my son is disabled and home all alone. If I go to work, I’m so nervous at work. All I think about is leaving him home alone, and I don’t know what to do. If I can get Home Support, then I’ll be able to go back to working three jobs to support my family,” says Maria.

Over the summer, families living in poverty like Maria’s face the burden of providing meals for their children that they would have received at school during the school week. These families turn to the Food Bank for assistance during the summer months.

“The Food Bank is a blessing. I come to the Food Bank and receive fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, meat and canned food. It helps so much,” says Maria as she leaves the emergency pantry.

On an overcast summer morning, Maria waits in line to receive food assistance at the Food Bank’s emergency food pantry site in Chula Vista. Maria waits with others in line to receive groceries from the emergency pantry to have enough food to get through to the week. She has been receiving assistance from the Food Bank for the past year to help feed her two sons.

“I’m a single mom, and I have two handicapped boys. I’m doing the best I can to support them. One is 20 years old, and the other is 11 years old. Thomas, my 20-year-old, has autism and attends programs at the San Diego Regional Center for people with developmental disabilities. And, my 11-year-old, Angel, is mentally handicapped. He’s in the 6th grade at Lauderbach Elementary School,” explains Maria.

Maria’s 11-year-old son, Angel, receives free breakfast and lunch at school Monday through Friday, and he is also on the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program which provides him with a backpack full of food to take home every Friday afternoon to ensure that he does not go hungry over the weekend.

The summer months are especially difficult for Maria when Angel is not in school. This is because Angel stops receiving free school meals and his weekend backpack of food when school is out for summer vacation, so Maria must visit several Food Bank distributions over the summer months to feed her family.

“I come to the Food Bank over the summer to feed my children. Angel is home full time now, and I need to feed him. He normally gets free meals at school, and he’s also on the Backpack Program so he gets a weekend backpack of food, but it all stops over the summer, and I need help putting food on the table,” she explains.
