Ever wished you had just a little more space to

stow away a few books, display a few of your favorite knick-knacks, or

keep your kids’ shoes and coats out of the front hallway? Have we got a storage solution for you! Just

below the stairs is a secret storage treasure trove. Depending on the size, scope, and layout of your stairs, you could have an

entire walk-in closet under there or at least a small space just screaming out for a handy little shelf or two.

For those with a more traditional sized staircase, think of building shelving for books and displaying treasures, or if you use your front entry as your home’s headquarters, consider installing pullout drawers and cabinetry for shoes, coats, hats, and other out-the-door accessories. If your stairs flow into your kitchen, consider stashing little-used, smaller kitchen appliances, pots and pans, and even spices in these tight but useful spaces. Does your staircase lead near the guest bathroom? Store extra hand towels, toilet tissue, cleaning supplies, and other easy-to-grab items nearby and totally out of sight. Depending on your décor style, you can use simple baskets on shelves to store your items, or for a more elegant look, have cabinetry built-in to suit your tastes.

For those with a staircase leading into a finished basement, the options are limitless. For a recreational space, use the under the stairs area to stow board games, video games and DVDs, and billiards or ping pong accessories close at hand. For oenophiles, turn this space into an easy to build wine rack. Or create a cozy reading nook, with a comfy chair tucked at the bottom of the stairs and shelves filled with your and your kids’ favorite books. The space can also be a perfect spot to place a desk to have an out of the way workplace for you or your kids to study.

Of course, if you have a larger staircase, you can actually have an entire walk-in under your stairs, perfect for hanging hooks for coats, extra shoe storage, and even such things as gifts, gift wrap, and projects such as scrap books and photo albums. Any way you look at it, the space under your stairs is underutilized and perfect for any number of projects you can think of. So go ahead and be creative. If you can think it, you can do it!

INGREDIENTS

4 ea Bosc pears1½ tsp extra virgin olive oil1/4 tsp Kosher salt1/8 tsp fresh ground pepper

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 400°. Wash pears and cut them in half and pat dry. Toss pears with olive oil and salt and pepper in bowl. Lay pears on baking dish skin-side down, cut-side up. Roast pears in 400º oven for 15 minutes the rotate tray. Continue cooking 15 minutes until soft and caramelized. Top with chutney or cranberry relish for added holiday touch.

Patchwork patterns were also seen popping up in dresses and jean skirts. How will the boho look translate into the home? Look for laidback, uncluttered designs and furniture with a modern edge. The feel is decidedly unfussy, with a stark and youthful vibe.

Also spotted on the runways: A penchant for all things Asian, from dresses donned with dragons and chinoiserie prints galore. Bring the Eastern look into your home with Asian-inspired accents, including everything from iconic blue and white china to Zen sculptures to Chinese-influenced wallpapers.

When it comes to color trends, fall fashion week was abuzz with brown, another nod

to the 70s. To follow the lead, look for browns to make their way back into interior spaces, often paired with coppers and burgundies to add richness. Gold also reigned supreme; look for shiny accents and influences in your home design magazines. Another color trend: A jump ahead to the 80s, when neon colors stole the stage. The fashion trends included bright pinks and yellows paired with neutral grays, tans, and dark blues to tone the look down. This is a great style to steal for teen bedrooms, where balancing the hot colors can be a major plus for parents.

A few other patterns and prints that may find their from the closet to your couch: bold winter florals, brocades, winter creams, velvets, and lots of shiny fabrics. Touches of faux-fur and shearling were also hot, lending itself to throw pillows and bedding at home.

Whether you’re a trendsetter or just curious about the latest looks, fashion on the runway almost always influences the world of interior design. Our take: Borrow any elements you like and work them into your current designs but leave the rest on the runway.
