PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Paul Winchester
How did it get to be October already? Model A Ford Days celebration has come and
gone, and now we are planning the next years banquet.
September produced no Parades, but Jim is working on other events for us to do.
Thank you, Jim.
For a Tour in September Stan and Judy took us on a long drive to seven members
homes who are not able to make it to meetings. It was good to see them and I think
they were glad to see us too. Thank you, Stan and Judy.
When you come to the next meeting bring an extra $5.00 to buy raffle tickets with,
Dave and Kris Francis have great raffle items you might win.
And if you want a sure winner buy some club merchandise from Betsy Johnson.
The September membership drawing is up to $30.00. I hope to see you at the Octo-
ber 14th meeting, starting at 7:00 pm, great refreshments at 8:00pm, some are home
made too.
Editor’s Note: Paul has provided opportunities for me to poke some fun at him each month with some funny pic-
tures. They definitely have been KODAK MOMENTS. This past month my camera wasn’t ready as he danced at the
meeting while Patty played some era music. So I had to dig a little deeper into my computer files and since it is
close to Halloween here is a picture of Paul dressed as a flower at our Idyllwild tour back in 2010, we had a couples
costume contest. Patty was dressed as a bumble bee. Hum what will I find for next month.

International Model A Day “Drive By” (Saturday, September 17, 2016)
Our club celebrated Int’l Model A Day on September 17th with a drive by of 7 homes of
members who, for various reasons, are not able to attend our meetings, events, or drive their
Model A’s (if they still have one). We drove by the homes of Jean Anderson, Ray
& Mary Lou Giacomini, Joyce Schuller, Ron Polk, Ernie Mittemeyer, Craig &
Kim Sweeting, and Gene & Barbara Amy. We had 12 Model A’s and 2 moderns
participating. The route took us first to Claremont (Jean’s and Ray & Mary Lou’s),
Pacific Beach (Joyce Schuller), then through Mission Bay to Point Loma (Ron
Polk). From Ron’s house 27 of us went for lunch at the Olive Garden restaurant in
the Midway area. Next we drove up through Presi-
dio Park to Mission Hills (Ernie Mittemeyer) then
back down past Old Town and onto I-8 to Allied
Gardens (Craig & Kim Sweeting). From there we
drove across Waring Road to Foster Freeze for a
little break and some soft serve ice cream. Inciden-
tally, parked in front was a beautiful (1928?)
Model T truck. Last, we were off to Santee where
we drove by Gene & Barbara Amy’s house. Bar-
bara was out in front where she took pictures and
Gene greeted each car with a nicely wrapped bag
of cookies, that he said (with a ha-ha). Thank you
to all the people who participated and especially to the people who allowed us to
visit them. The reception we got as we drove by and the pleasure we got from do-
ing it made it all worth while. To the people in areas too far to travel in
one day, we were also thinking about you and wishing we could have vis-
ited you as well. We hope you enjoyed this Model A Day as much as
Judy and I did. Mileage goes to: Valarie Basham, Bob & Jeanette
Bowie, Stan & Judy Boyer, Ron & Joyce Engen, Dave & Betsy Johnson,
Reenlee Kotas, Steve & Nancy Lovell, Ray & Barbara Miller, Vic &
Joyce Patterson, Jim & Jerriann Taber, Bob & Carol Weckman, and Paul
& Patty Winchester +1, Participation goes to: Ed Poffenberger & Anne
DiNapoli and Mike & Karen Richardson
Special thanks to: my wife Judy for the idea for this tour, for making the
phone calls, and making the cookies that were handed out in cloth Ford
bags to each person whose house we visited. Also, thank you to Ray
Beardslee for providing the Int’l Model A Day patches that we handed
out at the start of the tour.

TECH TALK: Reprinted from Road Runner Newsletter Sept. 2015
The Most Common Alternator Problem
The most common alternator problem on a Model A Ford is not the
alternator at all but the fan belt that drives the alternator. The Nu-Rex
MaxR alternator pulley (included with any Nu-Rex alternator) and the
replacement type Nu-Rex Hi-Speed pulleys have a special characteristic
that makes an improper fitting fan belt or a worn out fan belt very obvious and
easy to detect. It is called a pulley wear indicator or "wear strip".
A worn out or improper fitting fan belt can make your Model A Ford
appear to have an alternator issue simply because the charging rate of the alternator becomes non uniform. It may charge for a
while then slip and as the demand increases for energy to recharge the battery the load on the alternator increases which in
turn makes the belt slippage increase causing the battery to discharge. This becomes noticeable when the ammeter needle
starts to show discharge or begins to fluctuate. Tightening the fan belt which commonly takes care of belt slippage will not
improve the problem if the belt is worn outor has an improper fit to the pulley. The Nu-Rex Pulleys will tell you with a simple
visual inspection if a slipping problem exists.
A properly fitting fan belt will ride on the cantered sides of the pulley and never touch the bottom flat surface of the
pulley. In fact, a properly fitting fan belt will ride on the sides of the pulley and leave 1/4" to 3/8" gap below the belt and
never touch the flat bottom of the pulley. The problem arises when the belt does ride on the bottom surface as well and then
begins to slip and tightening the belt will not fix it.
This slippage can be easily detected because when the belt contact with the bottom of the pulley happens and belt
slippage begins , it wears off the black plating that all Nu-Rex alternator pulleys have leaving a silver or chrome looking
streak on the flat bottom area of the pulley that is obvious to see. The bottom flat surface of the pulley should ALWAYS be
black in color if the belt fit is proper. So if you have an unusual charging rate or a low battery condition with an alternator you
may want to check the pulley first to make sure all is proper with the fan belt.
The solution to the problem is to replace the fan belt with a proper belt purchased from
a Model A parts source and be very careful to check to makesure the new belt fits with the 1/4"
to 3/8" gap below the belt. Also, if a new belt is needed you probably have a discharged bat-
tery as well. This would be a good time to clean the battery contacts and fully charge the bat-
tery with a battery charger before using the car.
After the repair, it may also be a good time to replace the black "wear strip"
indicator on the pulley using a black magic marker so if the problem occurs again
your indicator will make the problem obvious again

PARADES & Car Displays: Jim Taber
September was a quiet month for Parades and Displays. The only one was a display at the Gross-
mont Shopping Center. This was in conflict with Model A day, hence only two cars participated.
Sorry no pictures available from this event.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
October will be another Quiet month as there is only one Parade scheduled, The BOO Parade on October 29.
We will be meeting at the now closed COCO’s parking lot on 5550 Lake Murry Blvd. At the time of this writing, I
don’t have any further info as to where and what time we are requested to line up. When I receive that info, I will
email every one.
Our club has been ask once again to provide some Model A for the WINGS AND WHEELS FESTIVAL to
be held at Gillespie Field on Saturday November 5th. At the last meeting 23 cars signed up and there is room for
more. There will be food, live music, aerial passes over the event by vintage biplanes and fighters are all part of the
exciting program. There will also be a 50/50 raffle as well as a "live auction" of nifty aviation goods and services as
well as biplane and floatplane flights. The famous Allen Airways Aviation museum will be open to all visitors at no
charge. The Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Club are set to have a strong presence as well as The Model "A"
Club of San Diego. Bud Swartwood is heading up this event so meet him at the frontage road off Marshall, (1905)
by the Mitre Aviation hangar for a 9:45AM departure). If you have any questions contact Bud at 619-992-6726.
The next event is the 16th Annual Fall Back Festival which is a FREE children’s historical street faire that
takes place in the heart of downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter, with lively festivities on Sunday, November 6, 2016 from
11:00 AM to 4:00 PM in front of the William Heath Davis House, spanning 4th Avenue between Market Street and
J Street and Island Avenue between 4th and 5th Avenues. Again as time approaches and as I receive more info, I will
email the details.

AUTUMN HARVEST TEA On a warm Santa Anna Saturday the Ladies met at the Bonno-
ront’s Victorian home in Jamul for an Autumn Harvest Tea.
Patty Winchester and her crew of many had been very busy
getting ready for our arrival. We had been schooled at the Sep-
tember meeting as to proper tea etiquette, and everyone was on
their best behav-
ior. The tables
were set on the
back patio surround by Billie’s lovely gar-
den. Because of the Santa Anna heat, they
had made each of us a paper fan. We chose
our fan, a tea cup for the day and found a spot at one of the tables. Era music played softly in the background as
we were served lunch; salad, finger sandwiches, scones and a variety of teas, (ice
water too).
Patty & Dalene shared with us their experience
of making the1hour era dress that took them
two weeks, but they said they are willing to try
it again. JoBeth also made an era dress with-
out using a pattern and I must say all three la-
dies looked very fashionable.
We had a variety of dessert to choose from.
Anne Di Napoli shared with us a little about
the spirituality of the women in the Model A
era. There was a hat decorating area set up
and on the lower lawn area a croquet set, but
we were to busy talking and
visiting , I’m not sure anyone
ventured over there. As we
left we were all given a
goodie bag with the makings
to enjoy a cup of tea and a
snack (era evening gown
cookies) at home. Thanks
Patty and her crew of helpers
for an enjoyable afternoon
with some incredible women.

1928 ERA FASHIONS & LIFETYLES 1931: Patty Winchester:
AMERICAN GLASSWARE, GLASS COLLECTIBLES
AND ALUMINIUM WARE
During the 1920s and 1930s, American glass companies created an extraordinary variety of products, ranging from
expensive art glass to inexpensive glassware for everyday use. Handmade glassware was especially popular in the
1920s, and the firms making such products used traditional pressing and blowing techniques, equipment, and tools. In
the 1930s, manufacturers came to rely on automatic machines to produce great quantities of utilitarian glassware.
Antique and vintage glassware encompasses countless types of decorative-yet-functional containers, bowls, and plat-
ters produced from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. Examples include pressed glass,
cut glass, carnival glass, Depression glass, elegant glass, and milk glass.
Please remember to bring in all your dishes and aluminium
ware to share as fine examples!!
Also, please bring in any and all glass collections you may have,
such as DeeLee Fiqurines
Next month: Holidays. Any short story or memory from your past of Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas. I
will bring a sign up sheet in October so we can schedule enough time. Also, please bring Holiday cards or
memoriblia from our era about the Holidays.
I so appreciate all of you!

Memorial to Don
The following article is written with the San Diego Club members
in mind who have a better memory than myself. (I can’t recall
what I had for breakfast yesterday).
The December 2013 edition of the Quail Call featured an article
reflecting an enduring friendship I had with my Pennsylvania
Model A buddy Don Freed. There are no organized Ford clubs in
that part of the east coast so Don was a bit of a loner at least once
a week during spring and summer months he could be seen motor-
ing around the country side in his sedan.
The two of us had a kindred spirit in that Don had a private pilot’s license, and flew out of the same dirt airfield I
did during my time in the Civil Air Patrol. We lost contact after my enlistment in the U.S. Navy until I started my
annual sojourn back to maintain our family farm.
It was then he would drive by with a smile, a wave, and an ahoooga. As time passed we got together to talk Model
A’s . I introduced Don to MAFCA and upon joining he looked forward to receiving The Restorer as well as The
Model A times publications. Since he did not have a computer I mailed copies of The Quail Call, to which he was
looked forward to receiving.
Sadly, in early July of this year I learned he was the victim of a fatal accident that occurred when a tree he was cut-
ting twisted and fell on him. Don’s passing will leave a void in my life as I make future trips to Pennsylvania.
Rest In Peace Buddy. Bill Corson (Sorry for you loss Bill and will miss hearing about future Model A adventures)
This and That …….submitted by Vern S.
My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to
go. Ate salad for dinner! Mostly croutons & tomatoes.
Really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato
sauce. And cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza.
How to prepare Tofu: 1. Throw it in the trash. 2. Grill
some Meat.
I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking into a
spider web.
I don't mean to brag but......I finished my 14- day diet in
3 hours and 20 minutes.
A recent study has found that women who carry a little
extra weight live longer than men who mention it!
Kids today don't know how easy they have it.
When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag
carpet to change the TV channel.
Remember back when we were kids and every time it
was below zero they closed school? Me neither.
I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or
smart or talented....I forgot where I was going with this.
I love being over 50. I learn something new every

HARDLUCK TROPHY
Rob Roland proudly took home the hardluck trophy
last month. He arrived late to the Tierrasanta Parade
due to a battery prob-
lem. As you can see
he parked off to the
side of the other A’s
just in case he needed
another little push.
He needed that little
push to get him going,
and the problem has
been resolved.
