former Wife Christen’s Navy ShipThe USNS Medgar Evers is the 13th of 14 Lewis

and Clark-class dry cargo ships that NASSCO is

building for the Navy. The fourteenth vessel, Cesar

Chavez, is currently under construction. NASSCO

The widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar

Evers will visit General Dynamics NASSCO in San

Diego on November 12 to christen the 689-foot dry

cargo ship that bears her former husband’s name.

Medgar Evers, who fought for the U.S. Army in

Europe during World War II, was slain at the age of

served for three years as chairman of the NAACP.

husband’s work in civil rights, will smash a bottle of cham-

pagne against the hull of the vessel during a 9 a.m. ceremo-

ny that will be open to the public. Myrlie Louise Beasley

remarried after her husband’s death.

The speakers will include Navy Secretary Ray Mabus,

who served as governor of Evers’ home state of Mississippi

from 1988 to 1992.

Mabus named the ship in 2009, saying in a statement

released by the Defense Department that, “At a time when

our country was wrestling to end segregation and racial

injustice, (Medgar) Evers led efforts to secure the right to

vote for all African Americans and to integrate public facili-

ties, schools, and restaurants. On June 12, 1963, the

Mississippi native was assassinated in the driveway of his home. Evers’ death prompted President

John F. Kennedy to ask the Congress for a comprehensive civil

rights bill.”

CO has, or is, building for the Navy.

The last ship in the line, Cesar Chavez,

is currently under construction. The

Medgar Evers will undergo sea trials

early next year and is scheduled to be

delivered to the Navy in April 2012.

The ship will transport everything from

food and fuel to ammunition.

Do Black People Count?I was under the impression that redistricting

was only for Californians until the newsannounced it’s happening all over the country.Other minorities are beginning to complain thatthey are being pushed out of power. It’s amaz-ing that there are over 350 million people inAmerica, with over 30 million of that numberbeing Blacks. You would think that out of 30million people, the Black voice would count forsomething. But I suppose that would dependon how you’re measuring this value.

In San Diego, millions of dollars are spenton advertising to attract votes, but most of thesedollars are never seen in the Black media.When Barack Obama ran for president, theBlack media virtually got no money in adver-tising funds. If the Black vote mattered, candi-dates would spend money to attract that vote.The daily life of a politician is much like anyother business. Nothing ventured, nothinggained. But I figured it out. The Black votedoes matter when there is a petition that needsto be signed or when the city or state is tryingto get a particular agenda on the ballot. Theywill stand out in front of the stores in the Blackcommunity asking people if they are a citizenregistered to vote, and if so, to please sign theirpetition. At that point you are important. Butonce that quota is met, Black voters becomeinsignificant. The mainstream media also tendsto forget about the Black vote once they areinvolved in the advertising game. Even Blackpoliticians forget about the Black vote. Theygo into the more wealthy communities to getendorsements and raise funds for advertising.Even they find a way to exclude the Blackmedia. If the Black media doesn’t count, doesthe Black vote count or can you only measure itwhen you are signing a petition?

When San Diego’s first Black councilmanwas appointed, we didn’t vote him into office.The city of San Diego was embarrassed by theirlack of diversity, and he was appointed so thatBlacks could have some representation. It wasonly after this appointment that Blacks learnedthe value of voting. Next year there will be aserious mayor’s race in our city. There will be

other races around the country as well, butredistricting may have taken much of the poweraway from the people.

Redistricting is changing the face of ourcommunity. No one has been able to explainthe advantages of the changes, other than thatour community is growing and we need to givea voice to a larger portion. But let me touch onsome important issues for a minute. BlackAmericans are being short changed because theBlack media is being stifled, smothered, andignored. When the Black press is ignored, thecommunity and its citizens are ignored. Theorganizational leaders, those that speak forBlack minorities don’t even live in the commu-nity. They just come into the district to work.They use the poor and the unemployed to estab-lish their organizations, but when it comes toliving with them, it’s just not done. So doBlack folks matter beyond that of keeping thempoor to raise government dollars? Does yourvote really count? Think about it.

President Obama Designates

Fort Monroe A National Monument,

Historic For Role In Slavery By Trymaine Lee [email protected]

President Barack Obama signed a procla-mation this morning designating Fort Monroea national monument. The recently decommis-sioned Army fort in Virginia played a centralrole in the Civil War and the nation's slavetrade.

It was there, in the summer of 1619, on aswath of land surrounded by a moat inVirginia's Tidewater region, that Dutch tradersbrought the first enslaved Africans to thefledgling colony. Later, during the Civil War,the fort was controlled by the Union andbecame a haven and refuge for escaped slaves.

"This is one of the most important andpowerful historic places in America, the spotwhere slavery began and also, two and a halfcenturies later, received its deathblow," AdamGoodheart, author of "1861: The Civil WarAwakening," said to The Huffington Post. "Itis the Plymouth Rock of African-Americanculture. I am thrilled it will be preserved andhonored."

Goodheart joined the president and othersin the Oval Office for the official signing ofthe order.

The designation marks the president's firstuse of his authority under the Antiquities Act,first used by President Theodore Roosevelt in1906 to establish America's first national mon-ument, Devil's Tower in Wyoming.

The president's designation was aboutmore than just protecting the fort and the landupon which it sits. According to the WhiteHouse, continued preservation efforts couldbring as many as 3,000 jobs to the region.

"Fort Monroe has played a part in some ofthe darkest and some of the most heroicmoments in American history," PresidentObama said in a statement. "But today isn'tjust about preserving a national landmark --it's about helping to create jobs and grow thelocal economy. Steps like these won't replacethe bold action we need from Congress to getour economy moving and strengthen middle-class families, but they will make a differ-ence."

National parks are responsible for $13.3billion of local, private-sector economic activ-ity nationwide, supporting 267,000 private-sector jobs, according to a statement releasedby the White House. There are currently 21national park units located in Virginia; Fort

Monroe would be the 22nd in the state and the396th nationwide. The statement also said a2009 study by the National Parks andConservation Association found that each fed-eral dollar invested in national parks generatesat least four dollars of economic value to thepublic.

Authors and historians have cited FortMonroe as not only where the earliest slavesarrived, but as having also played a role in theending of the institution. The fort was alsowhere Confederate President Jefferson Daviswas imprisoned after the Civil War.

In an article in the New York Times pub-lished earlier this year, entitled "How SlaveryReally Ended In America," Goodheart wrotethat on May 23, 1861, little more than a monthinto the Civil War, "three young black menrowed across the James River in Virginia andclaimed asylum in a Union-held citadel, FortMonroe, Va., a fishhook-shaped spit of landnear the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay."

And in doing so, "not amid the thunder ofguns and the clash of fleets, but stealthily,under cover of darkness, in a stolen boat,"pushed their way into history and to freedom.Army commanders at the fort used the infor-mation given to them by the three men, whohad been working at nearby Confederateencampment, to their advantage.

That same year, General Benjamin Butler,the commanding officer at Fort Monroe,signed the "Contraband Decision," which pro-vided a pathway to freedom for thousands ofenslaved people during the Civil War andserved as a forerunner to President AbrahamLincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863

Fort Monroe is seen as the place where slavery began to crumble when runaway slaves soughtrefuge at the Union fort.

idents and parents to change the decision of theSan Diego Unified School trustees to close 10-12schools in order to save money.It looks as if the decision wasscrapped and a new solution isbeing discussed.

Closer to home, we have avery serious problem brewingand it is at the “Hive”.

Lincoln High School was re-built and it is a beautiful cam-pus…on the outside. Inside thefences and walls there are trou-bling signs. Our students, atLincoln are scoring very low inMath, and English. Within thelast 5 years there has been noimprovement in grade scores.They were terrible then and they are still unaccept-able today.

In addition to the low scores, school securityappears to be a critical issue as is discipline, atten-dance and tardiness. I don’t know about you butthese sound like “symptoms” to me. The “prob-lem” may be the “leadership” at Lincoln, (or thelack of). As most of you may know Lincoln hashad two Principals managing the school. Yeahthat’s right two (2) Principals.

Have you ever heard of an organization havingtwo Presidents, or 2 CEO’s, how about two com-manders managing a Navy ship? How about twoPastors managing a single church? I am anOrganizational Development specialist by tradeand I have to tell you I cannot recall one instancein which this type of organizational structure hasever worked. Certainly in this school district thatstructure has not worked.

A couple of weeks ago one of the Principalsresigned thus leaving a vacancy. Now is the time tore-evaluate this structure!

This deterioration of quality in education atLincoln has not gone un-noticed. There are a groupof concerned residents, parents, grandparents andcommunity leaders, (calling themselves the“Lincoln Cluster Task force”). They have beentracking the scores and the problems that have sur-faced at our historical educational landmark. The

task force represents all students at Lincoln, notjust the African American students, but the AsianStudents, Latino students, boys and girls as well.Students that represent our entire community.

The Task force has beenmeeting at least twice per monthand is discussing solutions andrecommendations for the prob-lems at Lincoln. One of their rec-ommendations to SuperintendantKoba is to have one,(1) Principalwith 4 Vice Principals to managethe school. Sheila Jackson aswell as Brenda Campbell agreewith this change as well as mostof the parents of Lincoln towhich I have spoken.Additionally another recommen-dation by the Task Force is for theCommunity to be involved in the

selection of the new Principal. A third recommen-dation to Mr. Koba is to make his decision based ona criteria that looks like this; The next principal musthave: (a)Comprehensive successful High Schoolexperience of at least 3 years; (b)history of success-ful student achievement; and (c) Verifiable trackrecord of successes.

Mr Koba should have a Town hall meetingimmediately to address these concerns and to getinput from the students, parents and others anddevelop a strategy that involves all of us.Afterall it is truly our responsibility to getinvolved and help our students get the best edu-cation available! Lincoln needs our help!

Checking in on The Jacobs Ctr….. Here is anupdate on the Jacobs Ctr. I called and askedthem for an update and here is the latest. As youmay recall the top executives were asked toleave some months ago (reportedly due to theirlack of community inclusion in the decisions atJacobs) and an interim person is in the position.They are in the process of filling two veryimportant positions, The HR position and thePresident, here is the latest quoted from theJacobs Ctr.

SDUSD Offers Free Classesfor Contactors

The San Diego Unified School District Facilities Planning and Construction (FPC) depart-ment has a business outreach program designed to engage with Emerging Business Enterprisesand increase participation on its construction projects. “EBE” is an umbrella term that includeswoman-, minority-, disabled veteran-owned and small business enterprises. Forty percent EBEparticipation on each construction project is encouraged, and at present, exceeded!

To help local contractors bid effectively, SDUSD staff puts on training classes throughoutthe year. Monthly Labor Compliance Program workshops are held to ensure that contractorsunderstand the process for being fully compliant with state and federal prevailing wage lawsand regulations, and to meet SDUSD expectations.

Licensed contractors are encouraged to attend. Register by emailing Graham Champion [email protected]. The next classes will be held November 4 and December 2, 2011, from1 to 3 p.m. at the Physical Plant Operations Center in Training Room A/B (4860 Ruffner Street,San Diego, 92111).

SDUSD also holds quarterly Project Stabilization Agreement training workshops to ensurecontractors understand the scope of the “PSA”; contractor, union and SDUSD roles andresponsibilities; and grievance procedures/jurisdictional disputes. A one-hour candid conversa-tion with union representatives to answer specific trade questions is included. Register by con-tacting Ivory Anderson at 858.637.6262 or [email protected]. The last class of the yearwill be held January 17, 2012, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center locatedat 2375 Congress Street, San Diego, 92110.

Medgar Evers biographyCivil rights activist Medgar Evers was

born July 2, 1925, in Decatur,Mississippi. In 1954, he became the

first state field secretary of the NAACP inMississippi. As such, he organized voter-regis-tration efforts, demonstrations, and economicboycotts of companies that practiced discrimi-nation. He also worked to investigate crimesperpetrated against blacks. On June 12, 1963,Evers was shot dead.

Early LifeCivil rights activist. Born July 2, 1925, in

Decatur, Mississippi. After growing up in aMississippi farming family, Evers enlisted inthe United States Army in 1943. He fought inboth France and Germany during World War IIbefore receiving an honorable discharge in1946. In 1948, he entered Alcorn Agricuturaland Mechanical College (now Alcorn StateUniversity) in Lorman, Mississippi. During hissenior year, Evers married a fellow student,Myrlie Beasley; they later had three children:Darrell, Reena, and James.

Upon graduation from college in 1952,Evers moved to Philadelphia, Mississippi,where he began working as an insurance sales-man. He and his older brother, Charles Evers,also worked on behalf of the NationalAssociation for the Advancement of ColoredPeople (NAACP), organizing local affiliates inPhiladelphia.

Fighting Against DiscriminationIn 1954, the year of the momentous

Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board ofEducation, which purportedly ended segrega-tion of schools, Medgar quit the insurancebusiness; he subsequently applied and wasdenied admission to the University ofMississippi Law School. His unsuccessfuleffort to integrate the state’s oldest public edu-cational institution attracted the attention of theNAACP’s national office. Later that year,Evers moved to the state capital of Jackson andbecame the first state field secretary of theNAACP in Mississippi.

As state field secretary, Evers recruitedmembers throughout Mississippi and orga-

nized voter-registration efforts, demonstra-tions, and economic boycotts of white-ownedcompanies that practiced discrimination. Healso worked to investigate crimes perpetratedagainst blacks, most notably the lynching ofEmmett Till, a 14-year-old African-Americanboy who had allegedly been killed for talkingto a white woman.

Tragic Death and AftermathAs early as 1955, Evers’ activism made him

the most visible civil rights leader in the stateof Missisippi. As a result, he and his familywere subjected to numerous threats and violentactions over the years, including a firebombingof their house in May 1963. At 12:40 a.m. onJune 12, 1963, Evers was shot in the back inthe driveway of his home in Jackson. He diedless than a hour later at a nearby hospital.

Evers was buried with full military honorsin Arlington National Cemetery, and theNAACP posthumously awarded him their 1963Spingarn Medal. The national outrage overEvers' murder increased support for legislationthat would become the Civil Rights Act of1964. Immediately after Evers' death, theNAACP appointed his brother Charles to hisposition. Charles Evers went on to become amajor political figure in the state; in 1969, hewas elected the mayor of Fayette, Mississippi,becoming the first African-American mayor ofa racially mixed Southern town since theReconstruction.

A police and FBI investigation of the mur-der quickly unearthed a prime suspect--ByronDe La Beckwith, a white segregationist and

founding member of Mississippi's WhiteCitizens Council. Despite mounting evidenceagainst him, a rifle found near the crime scenewas registered to Beckwith and had his finger-prints on the scope, and several witnessesplaced him in the area—Beckwith deniedshooting Evers. He maintained that the gun hadbeen stolen, and produced several witnesses totestify that he was elsewhere on the night of themurder.

The bitter conflict over segregation sur-rounded the two trials that followed. Beckwithreceived the support of some of Mississippi'smost prominent citizens, including then-Governor Ross Barnett, who appeared atBeckwith's first trial to shake hands with thedefendant in full view of the jury. In 1964,Beckwith was set free after two all-white juriesdeadlocked.

After Beckwith's second trial, Myrlie Eversmoved with her children to California, whereshe earned a degree from Pomona College andwas later named to the Los AngelesCommission of Public Works. Convinced thather husband's killer had not been brought tojustice, she continued to search for new evi-

dence in the case.In 1989, the question of Beckwith's guilt

was again raised when a Jackson newspaperpublished accounts of the files of the now-defunct Mississippi Sovereignty Commission,an organization that existed during the 1950s tohelp raise popular support for the maintenanceof segregation. The accounts showed that thecommission had helped lawyers for Beckwithscreen potential jurors during the first two tri-als. A review by the Hinds County DistrictAttorney's office found no evidence of suchjury tampering, but it did locate a number ofnew witnesses, including several individualswho would eventually testify that Beckwithhad bragged to them about the murder.

In December 1990, Beckwith was againindicted for the murder of Medgar Evers. Aftera number of appeals, the Mississippi SupremeCourt finally ruled in favor of a third trial inApril 1993. Ten months later, testimony beganbefore a racially mixed jury of eight blacks andfour whites. In February 1994, nearly 31 yearsafter Evers' death, Beckwith was convicted andsentenced to life in prison. He died in January2001 at the age of 80.

your day, gives a walkthrough?

My day varies every-day because I work for somany people, VP ofRepair, 2 Directors,

Assist Managers fromour Purchasing,Estimating, Engineeringand Contracts depart-ments as needed.

Make coffee for meet-ings, plus make sure theyhave snack, lunch, dinner– whatever they need. I Go and purchase food for meetings,restaurants, store, grocery stores, also I

purchase microwaves and refrigerators for offices. Making sure both conference rooms are clean and set up for

the next meet (I try my best on this one). Depending on whattasks I have, I will arrive at work at 5am,

normal hours are 6-2:30, I never really get out at 2:30. I work with different programs, payment net, work, excel, etc.

Process certain paper work to assist opening up work for onour ships.

My typical day1. Order parts/merchandise from several vendors for our

ships.2. Order all types of forms.3. Responsible for keep a roster for fire drill for my immedi-

ate department. 4. Run reports5. Distribute mail6. Send out correspondences7. Update and maintain department procedures 8. Track internal personnel changes on a software we have9. Responsible for archival and retrieval of information/files10. Responsible for incoming calls and provide necessary

direction and / or forward to respective responsible party12. Assist another Adm. Assistant for another company for the

PSDSRA General Lunch meeting (Port of San Diego RepairAssociation)

14. Make sure we have attendees from our department toattend PSDSRA General Lunch 15. Arrange meetings

16. Data entry 17. Etc….and then home…

Questions from the EditorSDMN: What should San Diego know about Ships and

Nassco as a whole? RI: They should know that we are the company of Choice. SDMN: Is the Medger Evers ship special and why?RI: It’s special because it is the 2nd ship to be named after an

African American. Those individuals worked very hard workand endured struggles for black people as well as the entirehuman race.

SDMN: Give us one special thing that happened while build-ing this ship?

RI: I do not have an answer for this question, because I amnot out there on the yard while the ship is being built. But, I tellyou - when I walk past the ships being built, I’m in admirationeach and every time.

SDMN: Where are you going in this career? RI: In this career, I am going toward learning all that I can; a

shipyard Manager, Supervisor, Director or where ever the Lordtakes me.

SDMN: One thing a shipyard taught you about people?RI: That all people are created equally, it takes every race to

build a ship… although some don’t want or think of it that way,however...it’s because heroes fought the battles and here we standregardless.

JOURNEY TO THE WHITE HOUSEJust when two sex allegations was bad

enough, it seems three will be enough to tar-nish his name. Herman Cain, the leader ofthe polls in the Republican Presidential cam-paign, is faced with three sexual harassmentcharges; and one accuser that will destroyhis campaign.

Before the glitz and fame, Cain was serv-ing his tenure as the chief executive of theNational Restaurant Association in the1990s. And it was during that time twofemale employees, in a report, “complainedof sexually suggestive behavior by Cain thatmade them angry and uncomfortable.”(Politico) However, what worse was thatthey signed agreements with the restaurantgroup that gave them financial payouts toleave the association—it also included lan-guage that bars the women from talkingabout their departures. Cain immediatelydenies the sexual harassment charges, butsources have said otherwise.

-From a recent television interview, withPBS, Herman Cain said that he was unawareof the settlements but was aware of theagreement (money to silence accusations)—an incident which he remembered two daysafter he denied the charges. He then remem-bers how he did not tell his wife about thecharges. News reporters are beginning toquestion his integrity. The reporter whointerviewed him says its “hard to keep trackwith him,” “he keeps changing his story.”However no matter how many stories hecomes up with, it will take only one story(one accuser) to put a dent in his politicalcareer.

-Joel Bennett, an attorney for one ofCain’s accusers, told the CBS InvestigativeUnit that he’s meeting with his client, one of

the twowomen whocharged Cainwith harass-ment duringhis tenure asthe chief exec-utive of theN a t i o n a lR e s t a u r a n tAssociat ion.No word hasbeen discussedto terminatethe agreement, however, he told reportersfervently that the NRA “ought to waive theconfidentiality and non-disparagement pro-visions and let the two women, if theychoose to do so, come forward and telltheir stories so that it can get a completepublic airing.” In response, NRA is care-fully looking at its legal obligations beforedeciding whether to release the women tospeak. Cain states that he isn’t sure if he’llask the NRA to release the woman’s testi-mony.

-New York Times reported that one ofCain’s accusers, ambiguous if it is the onewho is ready to testify, received $35,000—year’s salary—in severance pay to leavethe organization.

-It is certainly unclear how the develop-ing story will impact Cain’s frontrunnerstatus in the race for the GOP nomination,but it will leave a dent in his overall polit-ical career. In spite of these allegationsCain’s campaign received $400,000 indonations. However will this be enough tocover his potential fall in the political cam-paign race? We will have to wait and see.

It’s tough being a prophet. It’s tough not to say “I told you so” when week after week I’m telling you all what’s

going to happen [“…the world economy is headed…into the tank…because Greece can’tpay its bills.” Where Did All The Money Go – Oct. 8, 2011] and then it does.

Tonight I was watching the Jim Lehrer News Hour on KPBS. I do this because youdon’t, and someone has to talk to you. As if they had been listening to me since I startedthis campaign for Assembly, Lehrer was highlighting the “evident dysfunction of theplace,” speaking of the partisan “bickering” in both Sacramento and Washington D. C.

Let’s return to the pyramid scheme we call the global economy. Remember, the onlypeople who get paid in the long run are the people at the top. Who are they? I have no idea.But I know this: everyone else gets screwed

The people who get in the game early are the most likely to get something back, if theydon’t get too greedy and stay in the game too long. We did. The United States got in wayearly and stayed way too long. So we’re taking a beating, but not the worst. However, sincewe ended up holding more chips than anyone else, the survival of the game depends on us.

The United States economy is GIGANTIC! If we solve our economic problems, wecan save the rest of the world’s economy. So, what’s the problem? Politicians! Washingtonand Sacramento “politicians” are screwing the rest of the world with “partisan politics.”What does this mean? It means the 1% are at it again. The United States Senate is a mil-lionaires club. The Republicans in the United States House of Representatives “represent”the 1%. They are trying their damnedest to be “conservative”. But what are they conserv-ing? The unbalanced and obscene wealth they’ve accumulated at the expense of the 99%.They don’t want to pay a small amount (for them) in taxes they’ve avoided since GeorgeBush, money they got from us, even if it means crashing the rest of the world’s economy.

California has the eighth largest economy on the world. Bigger than almost 190COUNTRIES. We are $2 trillion of the United States’ $14 trillion economy. BothCalifornia and the Congress have to come to a compromise on how to balance their bud-gets and eliminate our debt. Kinda what we have to do ourselves, in our own homes. If youhave had to do it for yourself, you might want to call or e-mail your local “politician” andtell them how you did it. They can use all the help they can get.

Earlier this year the Insight Center for Community EconomicDevelopment published a study which found that the medianwealth of single black women is $100 compared to that of singlewhite women at $41,000. Don’t be fooled by thinking the dispar-ity is caused by just a difference in income. Income and wealth arenot the same! Income is what we bring in annually, while wealthis basically established by what we decide to do with the resourceswe bring in.

Saving money is a lost art in our time. I heard a statistic that 85percent of Americans have $250 or less in savings at age 65. Thatis less than $6 per year! Most of what people earn goes to pay fortheir comfort in the present with little thought of the future.Although it is not wrong to be comfortable today, we need tobegin saving now as much as we can so that we can be preparedfor bigger things in the future.

Here are 5 behaviors many black women tend to participate inmore frequently than other female counterparts which perpetuatethis staggering economic gap:

1. We treat boyfriends like husbands. We won’t get on howmany different ways this behavior is detrimental, but speakingfinancially, co-signing on loans and entering long-term agree-ments with someone who has not even attempted to commit to youon a long term basis is ridiculous. More times than not, Blackwomen are left with the debt of a brother who has moved on andis driving his new girlfriend around in the car you still have to paythe note on.

2. We don’t know how to say, “NO!” We tend to be givers by nature, but unfortunately we giveuntil the point of self-deprivation. First to the church, then to bills and then to relatives and friendswho have no means of paying us back. We believe that we are “helping” everyone around us fromtrifling siblings to grown children, but really we are enabling the people we love the most, not tomention damaging our own financial futures. Remember, the worst thing you can do for a brokeperson is become one of them!

3. We make our hair and nails a top priority. As Black women, being all that is definitely a pri-ority, but can this be done on some type of budget? Are the nails with all the intricate designs thatadd an additional $10 to every pedicure really that important? Imagine what could happen if werocked hairstyles and manicures that were less flashy and something we could maintain on our ownin between appointments.

4. We buy children name brand clothing. Why should any infant or toddler be Gucci’d down?Children will not die from not having Baby Phat symbols across their chest. Name brand clothingis to impress your friends and strangers on the street who, quite frankly, really could care less. Ifyou shopped at stores like Target, think of all the money you could actually put into that child’s col-lege fund!

5. We care too much about what our car looks like. Many of us are the first to graduate fromcollege in our families and we want to make sure that everybody from the ‘hood knows that “we’vemade it!” What’s the easiest way to show this? A big flashy car that we can’t even afford to replacea tire on. If you can’t afford the maintenance on a vehicle, especially the preventative maintenance,then you can’t afford the car. It’s really that simple!

It’s time for Black women to wake up and pay attention to what’s really important in life.What’s the point in looking like a million bucks, when you’re barely worth a hundred?

A few simple tips on saving:Save for vacations, computers, and other items that will decrease in value as time passes, and

pay for them without using debt. You can wait longer than you think on these types of items.Put aside money every paycheck for your retirement, your next car, and your child’s education

no matter how small you feel it is, do it! Saving for the future can cut down debt and allow moremoney to accumulate over time.

Begin your child’s education fund and encourage him or her to save while he or she is stillyoung. It is much easier to build these habits when one is young. Use your will and other suchsources to wisely pass along your inheritance to your children. Saving little by little is the key tofinancial success.

CLEANSING TOXIC RELATIONSHIPSBy Lady Topaz

Thoughts on avoid-ing unnecessary toxicenergy have stayed withme over the years sincemy first visit to Dr.Kevin D. Holder andmy journey to holisticliving. I feel that thisfacet of living is a vastly underrated determi-nant of health and overall quality of life. Weknow that our emotional health status has con-stant influence over the health of every organsystem in our bodies, particularly our nervousand endocrine systems. And clearly, our emo-tional health is largely affected by our dailyinteractions with others. So it stands to rea-son that learning how to identify and effec-tively deal with toxic influences are impor-tant skills to develop when looking to experi-ence optimal health.

HOW TO IDENTIFY HUMAN TOXICITYGenerally speaking, I think it is safe to say

that a person is toxic to your health if his or herbehavior makes you feel bad on a regular basis.Clearly, there are exceptions to this guideline.For example, if a close friend or family membershares a concern about your behavior with aspirit of wanting to improve your relationship,you may feel bad and your sense of emotionalwell-being may take a temporary hit, but it doesnot make sense to label such friends or familymembers as being toxic.

What follows are specific patterns of behav-ior that I believe fall into the “toxic-to-your-health” category:

Attempting to intimidate you by yelling orbecoming violent in any manner (and, yes, slam-ming a door – or the phone – is a violent act).

Consistently talking down at you, sendingthe message that he or she is just plain betterthan you.

Regularly telling you what he or she thinksis wrong with you.

Slandering others behind their backs (i.e.,trying to engage you in gossip that is hurtful toothers).

Spending the bulk of your conversationscomplaining about his or her life and others.

Discouraging you from pursuing your inter-ests and dreams.

Attempting to take advantage of your kind-ness and resources, and trying to make you feelguilty if you do not do what he or she wants.

HOW TO DEAL WITH TOXIC PEOPLE ANDBEHAVIOR

So, how do you preserve your health afteryou have identified a person as being toxic toyour health? The answer depends on the rolethat the toxic person plays in your life.Although it is virtually impossible to categorizeall such people into neat boxes, I tend to classi-fy them into one of the following groups:

GROUP 1: H&G (HI AND GOOD BYE)Examples of people who belong in this cat-

egory: Unkind customer service representativesPeople who exhibit road rageStrangers on the street How to protect your health against such

people:First, think carefully about your own behav-

ior to see if you may have done or said some-thing to cause the other party’s behavior.

If you can identify something that you didthat likely offended the other party, if possible,

offer a sincere apology. If he or she acceptsyour apology, things work out well for both par-ties. If your apology is not accepted, you can atleast walk away with some peace of mind,knowing that you owned up to your behavior.

If you cannot think of a single thing that youdid that could have offended the other party,give him–or her–a silent “H&G” and walkaway. Confronting the other party about unkindbehavior is not likely to be fruitful. Since youdo not have to co-exist on a regular basis, youcan take the mindset of “fool me once, shameon you, fool me twice, shame on me.” In otherwords, the other party’s unkind behavior is onhim or her; he or she will reap natural conse-quences in due time.

GROUP 2: NO REAL NEED TO BE CLOSE, BUTCONTACT IS FREQUENT DUE TO LIFE CIRCUM-STANCES

with (church, book club, sports club, etc.) How to protect your health against such

people:As before, start by examining your own

behavior to see if you can come up with a rea-sonable cause for the other party’s unacceptablebehavior. If you cannot come up with a reasonfor the other party’s behavior, find someonewho you can trust to be as objective and honestas possible, and explain the conflict to him orher as thoroughly and accurately as possible.Ask for honest feedback on how you mighthave triggered the other party’s behavior.

If appropriate, apologize for your behavior.If you and your adviser have thought long andhard about the conflict and cannot identify any-thing that you need to apologize for, work ondeveloping compassion for the other party.

Most will agree that people are not bornto be mean-spirited and toxic to others.People can become mean-spirited and toxic toothers for varying periods of time if theyencounter enough hurt, disappointment, and/oranger in their own journeys. Maybe the otherparty is jealous of you and consumed by his orher own failures. Maybe he or she is just goingthrough a really rough time due to a loss in thefamily. Maybe he or she has never truly feltcared about by another person. Maybe the otherparty has been treated so poorly by familymembers that sensitivity has been numbed andhe or she has no idea that you feel like you havebeen mistreated. The idea is to generate enoughcompassion for the other person to overpoweror at least quell your hurt feelings.

This does not mean that you need to be amartyr or a doormat and go asking for anotherthree tight slaps to your other cheek.Developing some compassion for the otherparty’s behavior is meant to prevent said behav-ior from causing you to stew and stay emotion-ally unbalanced for a long time after the actualmoment of conflict. And if the other party hasor develops the courage to apologize to you,having some pre-made compassion available inyour heart improves your chances of offeringgenuine forgiveness and experiencing thatmuch more emotional harmony.

After you have worked on developing com-passion for the other person’s circumstances, if

Potrero is a quiet solitude right nextto Campo and the Mexican town of Tecate. If you decide to go to Campo for the day you can visitthe railroad museum and century old historic stone store. At Potrero you can take in the views ofsome of the hundred year old oak trees or critters that occupy the area. On your hiking trips youmay see mule deer, coyotes, raccoons, stripped and spotted skunks, brush rabbits, red tailed andcopper hawks, golden eagles, acorn woodpeckers and scrub jays.

I am looking forward to bringing my lunch out to the benches that are surrounded by the oaktrees and lavish in the greenery that this campsite has to offer. I thoughtabout even tossing some bread off my sandwich to the squirrels that mightbe cascading off the trees. What a wonderful place to refresh, renew andrevitalize the mind. This also looks like a fantastic place to meditate. Icould picture myself with a blanket with my eyes closed breathing in thecrisp fresh air and hearing the exotic sounds of the wilderness. If you couldjust picture yourself in the picture right where you are and feeling enrap-

tured by the surrounding of the oak trees and the sunlight gazing over your face, the wind movingslowly across your body, the sound of the birds chirping in a nearby trip, even though you can’t seethem because your eyes are closed you hear the squirrels scampering around. You slowly let go ofall your worries and begin to relax you hear the hawk squawking and let out another sigh of relief.

It may be time for California to formally applyfor membership in the European Union. Its taxing,borrowing and regulatory policies are alreadymore in line with the southern tier of Eurolandthan with other U.S. states, and the Golden Statehas taken another lurch in the Euro-direction bybecoming the first jurisdiction in the nation toadopt a full-scale cap-and-trade tax to combatglobal warming. The new taxes and regulationswill require a nearly 30% reduction in carbonemissions from power plants, manufacturers, carsand trucks by 2020.

This green tax was signed into law in 2006 bythen-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger when thestate’s economy was flying high. California wasgoing to be the green role model for other states.Now no one believes that fantasy. Ten states in theNortheast entered a regional cap and trade com-pact to limit greenhouse gases in 2008, but thatmarket is now dying if not dormant and states(recently New Jersey) are dropping out.

In 2006 it also seemed plausible that the feder-al government would establish national carboncaps. But in 2010 the Democratic Senate killedcap and trade, and there is no chance anytime soonthis tax will be implemented in Washington.

So California will go it alone on cap and trade,and the economic fallout won’t be pretty. Nearlyevery independent analysis agrees that water, elec-tricity, construction and gas prices inside the statewill rise. The only debate is about how much.

A 2009 study by the California Small BusinessRoundtable estimated costs of $3,857 per householdby the end of the decade. Gasoline prices, alreadynear the highest in the nation, could rise by another4% to 6%. An analysis by the state’s own LegislativeAnalyst’s Office found that the higher costs of doingbusiness would mean “leakage of jobs,” with theCalifornia economy “likely adversely affected in thenear term by implementing climate change policiesthat are not adopted elsewhere.”

Now even unions are catching on to the dam-age. The Los Angeles Times reports that theCalifornia Air Resources Board (CARB) gavefinal approval to the new scheme two weeks agoafter listening to “scathing comments from unionworkers fearful of losing their jobs.” Hard-hatunion members from the steel, concrete and oil

and gas industrieswere among theopponents. CharlesMcIntyre, presidentof an association ofthe glass workersunion and compa-nies, told the CARBhearing that “thesemanufacturers arespending millions ofdollars every year tomeet differentrequirements and dif-ferent standards. Well, this is starting to cost us alot of jobs.”

The Western States Petroleum Association cal-culates the new law could cost its members up to$540 million in higher costs in the first two yearsalone. When a spokesman from Conoco Phillipstold the CARB hearing about its higher costs, MaryNichols, the CARB chairman, responded that acompany with $14 billion in profits shouldn’t com-plain but rather “should do something about theproblem of global warming.” Sounds like a candi-date to be President Obama’s next jobs czar.

Ms. Nichols also said that “our society isgoing to have to use less gasoline”—a remark thatreveals the elites-know-best impulse that animatesmuch of the anticarbon energy movement.

The tragedy is that this economic harm is beinginflicted for nothing but environmental symbolism.A single state’s policies can’t possibly alter the plan-et’s temperature given the huge carbon footprintelsewhere, as even the CARB has acknowledged.

Notwithstanding their bouts of carbon imperi-alism (see below), even some Europeans are hav-ing cap-and-trade second thoughts. “There is atrade-off between climate-change policies andcompetitiveness,” concludes a recent EU commis-sion report. “Europe cannot act alone in an effortto achieve global decarbonization.”

But evidently high-minded California—with2.1 million people already out of work and withthe nation’s second highest jobless rate at 11.9%—will. The job cost will be paid not in the tonysalons of Hollywood but in the working classneighborhoods of Torrance and Fresno.

2011 – If youhaven’t heard bynow, it has come tolight thatPresidential hopefuland Republicanfront-runner HermanCain was accused ofsexual harassmentby three formeremployees. Theemployees contendthat Cain engaged in sexual misconduct in theearly 1990s while he was head of the NationalRestaurant Association. In 1991 Supreme Court(then-nominee, now Justice) Clarence Thomaswas hit with accusations of sexual misconductby former colleague Anita Hill. Thomasfamously decried the incident as “nothing morethan a high-tech lynching” due to the fact that

The problem with such a question is that itsomewhat assumes Thomas was innocent of theaccusations and simply because of the similari-ties, that Cain is as well. It remains unclear ifthere is any validity to either set of allegationsbut there is a striking difference between theCain and Thomas situations. In the case ofThomas, Hill’s allegations were brought up notat the time they occurred but during hisSupreme Court nomination hearings, yearslater. With Herman Cain the issues of sexualharassment were brought up at the time theyallegedly occurred and were handled within thecompany at the time. In other words, with Cainthe news is that he had been accused in the pastnot that he was currently being accused.Ultimately in the case of Thomas, Hill’s accu-sations proved to be inconsequential and he was

confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. In thecase of Cain, he does not have to answer to apanel, but instead voters and it is too early totell what, if any, impact the sexual harassmentissues of his past will have on his frontrunnerstatus. Most analysts agree though, if any of thewomen actually speak publicly (or if this goeson much longer) this will likely end his cam-paign.

That said, ultimately, I find it difficult tocare. The accusations were handled nearly 20years ago, and the fact that it is making head-lines now, overshadows the bigger issue, whichis: Herman Cain along with the rest of theRepublican 2012 field of candidates, is an idiot.Aside from Herman – black people who voteDemocrat are brainwashed – Cain, we haveMichele – It’s fine to suggest Melissa Ethridgehas cancer because she’s a lesbian - Bachmann,Rick - slashed Texas firefighter funding, thenasked for federal aid when his state caught fire– Perry, Mitt – we should let everyone’s homesforeclose to fix the market – Romney, Newt –need I say more – Gingrich and Ron – I would-n’t have voted against getting rid of Jim Crowelaws because of business rights - Paul. One ofthese lunatics is going to secure the Republicannomination, meaning, at least one total maniachas way too good of a shot at becomingPresident of the United States and that, not 20year old, handled, allegations of sexual miscon-duct, is what concerns me the most.

Perry Says He Was Not Drunk Or OnMedication During Speech

Speaking of Texas Governor Rick Perry, it isat least worth a mention, that he has finallyaddressed his… interesting… appearance inNew Hampshire last week. During last week’sspeech, Perry was uncharacteristically jovialand animated leading many to question whetheror not he was under the influence of alcohol ormedication.

Perry said that despite having back surgeryin July, he was not under the influence of alco-hol or medication and blamed political oppo-nents for trying to mischaracterize his appear-ance. Perry told The San Francisco Chronicle,“Ask the people who were there... not somepolitical opponent who has put a video up.”

An important part ofexperiencing emotional balance is learning to teachothers that you expect to be treated with kindness andrespect. To seek out a make-up session when you havedone nothing wrong and the other party has not mus-tered up the courage to apologize is to teach him orher that you can be walked on - not a good lesson togive.
