schools, communities, and the
PASS AmeriCorps Program is
what allows us to make a differ-
ence in the lives of our students.
In May and June, our PASS Ameri-
Corps Service Members are de-
ciding the next steps in their jour-
neys. Some are choosing to serve
another year with PASS, some are
moving on to graduate school, and
some are finding jobs in their cho-
sen career field.
We wish all our students and
Service Members the best, and
expect to hear great things from
them in the future.
Have a fantastic summer and we’ll
see you in the new school year!
The 2017-18 school year is coming
to a close and we can’t believe how
fast the year has gone! We are
grateful to the PASS AmeriCorps
Service Members who gave a year
to serve our youth and communi-
ties in San Diego County. Some of
them lived here locally; some of
them were serving a second,
third, or even fourth year with
PASS AmeriCorps; and some of
them took a leap of faith and
moved across country to dedi-
cate a year of their lives working
with our students. Thank you so
much for your service!
Thank you, also, to all our
school site Points of Con-
tact, administrators,
teachers, school staff, and
other partner organiza-
tions; your support and
commitment to your

In May, the PASS AmeriCorps Pro-
gram hosts an event called “Life After
AmeriCorps.” This event provides
resources and networking opportuni-
ties for our Service Members as they
transition out of their year of service
with PASS AmeriCorps. Presenta-
tions ranged from the Segal Educa-
tion Award to the AmeriCorps
Alumni Association, and more. We
want to thank all our presenters for
the day:
current

Amy
DeNinno,
Jose
Romero, and Jennifer Hopek for
presenting on Travel and Work
Abroad; Dan Puplava from SDCOE
Risk Management for presenting on
the 3121 Retirement Plan; and Bob
Mueller, Executive Director of
SDCOE’s Student Services and Pro-
grams for presenting on the Science
of Happiness. Thank you to our
AmeriCorps Alumni Panel for shar-
ing their experiences and advice:
Rosalina Herrera, Juleane Johnson,
and Lizz Kolokowsky. A highlight of
the day was the rotating café con-
versations in which our current
Members were able to speak with
professionals in a field of interest.

came out to speak with us: Gabriela

Rolando Park Elementary School
Happy May/June Rolando Park
Elementary! We are in the final
stretch of the year! It is an exciting
time of year with the many field
trips, 5th grade promotion, and
state testing to show how bright
these young scholars have worked
all year for. As the school year and
my time as an AmeriCorps Service
Member here at Rolando Park
Elementary is nearing an end, I
want to thank the teachers and
staff again for supporting the pro-
gram and myself since day one.
We’ve accomplished many things
this year as a school, for the pro-
gram, and myself personally.
Thank you for allowing me to
be the stepping stone for fu-
ture members to build on and I
look forward to hearing for
what's in store next year. To
the 5th graders promoting on
to middle school, it was amaz-
ing meeting you this year and I
wish you the best of luck on
your future endeavors. Don't
forget to come back and visit.

also held the Multicultural Fair,
which celebrated the reclassifi-
cation of English Learners.
Congratulations to all students
who marked this special
growth. We are so excited to
celebrate even more in June
with events like the grade level
awards ceremonies, 8th grade
field trip to Parkway Bowl, and
of course the Promotion cere-
mony on the last day of school.
We are so proud of all our

to meet their goals this year! It
has been an honor and pleasure
to support and get to know each
of you. Thank you for making this
year in the PASS AmeriCorps
Program so special. We wish all
of you a safe and fun summer.

our neighborhood library in
downtown San Diego. We
received a tour and a lot of
information that can benefit
our students. The 5th graders
went to Balboa Park to study
about the environment and
nature. We also had two com-
petitions this month: The San
Diego County Office of Educa-
tion Science Field Day and the
San Diego Soap Box Derby. I
was very happy to have been able
to participate and spend time with
my PASS students in a different
setting. It has been an amazing
fourth and last year here at Sher-
man. It was a privilege working with
such an amazing staff and principal. I
will miss my PASS students, of
whom most will be promoting to
middle school this year. So, this is
it! Please be safe out there and have
a great summer!
May was a busy
month for our
students. State
testing took up
almost the
whole month,
however, it was
also a month of
self-care. There
were field trips
and school events. Some of the
field trips consisted of visiting

Memorial Prep students endured
testing for a little over two weeks
in May. Good job students for mak-
ing it through. Now that testing is
officially over, students are getting
ready to finish the school year
strong. Students are trying their
best to remain focused with their
academics and attendance. I would
like to say a big THANK YOU to
all the teachers and staff for all the
delicious sweets given during staff
appreciation week. I felt appreciat-
ed and I enjoyed it. It has been a
great school year at Memorial Prep.
I can’t believe how fast this school
year flew by. It was nice working
with every teacher and staff at this
campus. I am grateful for the op-
portunity that was given to me to
build relationships with the stu-
dents I met. I enjoyed helping every
single student. It was nice to see
some of the growth the students
did either emotionally or academi-
cally. I am looking forward to the
entire end of the year activities and
celebrating the 8th grade promo-
tion.
succulents. Students now know that
taking time for self-care can help us
persevere in our goals, and reduces
stress. Thank you, Ms. Suzy, for
these wonderful ideas! Students
also made flower pots for Mother's
Day to show gratitude for their
love and support. School ends mid-
June, so students are asking teach-
ers for missing work and setting
aside time during and after school
to work on anything they are miss-
ing. Thank you for a wonderful year
SDHS! Have an amazing summer,
see you next year!
Congratulations on making it
through this school year San Diego
High School! The focus of this
month has been following through.
As we approach the end of the
year, students are practicing follow-
ing through on their commitments,
their school work, and their attend-
ance. Meanwhile, students are prac-
ticing self-care while buckling down
to finish the school year strong.

The PASS AmeriCorps Program serves stu-
dents in grades 3 through 12 at 30 school sites
across San Diego County, including campuses
in San Diego, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos,
and Valley Center. Each PASS AmeriCorps
member provides support for 30 students
through individual and group mentoring, aca-
demic support, grades and attendance reviews,
leadership development, guest speakers, ser-
vice learning projects, and parent outreach.
Through their service with PASS, our Ameri-
Corps members are able to create positive
change in our schools and communities.
