American Songbook I Meet the Artists

Composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone conceived San Fermin dur-ing a retreat on the mountainous border between Alberta and BritishColumbia. By the start of 2013, San Fermin, which had only performedtwice with sheet music, signed a record deal and released its self-titleddebut worldwide later that year.

San Fermin received rave reviews, and the group performed sold-outshows and appeared at festivals including Firefly, Lollapalooza, the Festivald’été de Québec, Latitude, and Celebrate Brooklyn! San Fermin hasshared the stage with The National, St. Vincent, Arctic Monkeys, and TheHead and the Heart. Its follow-up album, Jackrabbit, is due to be releasedin April by Downtown Records.

If San Fermin seemed prepared, guarded, and polite, Jackrabbit lines thatrecord’s complicated composition and grandiose pop eruptions with nec-essary aggression. It is urgent and filled with moments in which eachmember of the band is prominently featured. The two discrete charactersborn by the debut album have been replaced by multiple personalities, treading new and difficult terrain.

This evolution is at the heart of Jackrabbit, a record where moments beau-tiful, brutal, and a bit of both produce songs that don’t know how to let youout of their clutches or console you with easy answers. At once lived-inand sophisticated, Jackrabbit feels a lot like real life—charmed, challeng-ing, and wonderfully compulsory.
