A message from Fr. Tony

My brothers and sisters it is with sorrow and joy that I share with you that on July 1, 2016 I will assume the duties of pastor at Saint Francis of Assis Catholic Church. The coming months will be a time of transition for us all, but do not worry, for God always provides, and you will be given a new shepherd to lead you and guide you along the way. I am grateful to everyone who has helped me to gain a deeper understanding of my own identity and assisted me in becoming a bet-ter priest. Truly I will bring you with me in thoughts and prayers as I celebrate and min-ister with the people of my new assign-ment. My brothers and sisters, it can at times be difficult to say goodbye, but know I will not be far away. I will carry each of you in my prayers. Of this I assure you! So let us not be saddened this day but instead re-joice! For HE is in control, the one who rolled away the stone and conquered sin and death once and for all. Sisters and brothers, the tomb is empty. HE is not there, for HE is with us and in us. May the God of Mercy bless each and every one of you this Easter season, may the Joy of the resurrection be with you this day and for all eternity. CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED!

Blessings,

Fr. Tony

Padre Tony

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We return to our reflec ons on the rites of marriage with a brief considera on of re-forms from the Council of Trent. When the Protestant Reforma on took hold, the fairly recent achievements of the Church in re-gard to the sacrament of marriage were reviewed with a cri cal, reforming eye. In general, Protestants returned to an earlier view that marriage was a civil ma er, alt-hough some said that the civil society had to be in harmony with Chris an teaching. In the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent took the ques on up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramental-ity of marriage. They iden fied many threats to this, including secret marriages and easy divorce. So they enacted laws that s ll govern our prac ce today: to be valid, marriage consent must be exchanged in the presence of a priest and two witnesses. Ev-er since Trent, marriages must also be an-nounced three weeks in advance to the community, and recorded in a register. In some places in the world, the “banns” are s ll posted in the public square. In the Unit-ed States, parishes some mes publish the “banns” in the bulle n.

Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen the standard scene of a minister announcing gravely, “If there is anyone here present who sees any reason why these two should not be married . . .” This bit of drama has no place in the Cath-olic liturgy, but survives among Protestants who broke with us before Trent edited this cliff-hanger out of our public prayer.
