COMMUNITY CORRIDOR CLICK FOR THE GIANTS COVID-19 COMMUNITY RESPONSE BLOG

#GivingTuesdayNow—Tuesday, May 5 - With the closure of schools, recreational opportuni-ties and after school programs, there’s a need for youth programming now more than ever. The Giants Community Fund has responded to this need with a virtual approach to its flag-ship program through the creation of Junior Giants at Home. #GivingTuesdayNow, a global generosity movement, provides a special opportunity to support Junior Giants during this time. For more information, visit JRGIANTS.ORG

May is Stroke Awareness Month and the Giants have teamed up with the American Heart As-sociation to remind everyone that strokes require immediate medical attention, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak. Forever Giants Bruce Bochy and Bill Laskey recorded PSA's for the American Heart Association to help spread the word.

For more information on what the Giants are doing in the community check out the SF Giants COVID-19 Community Response blog here

COACH SPEAK: KAI CORREA Each week we'll get to know the new Giants coaches with a few fun ques-tions in this space. This week it's bench coach Kai Correa.

You had an opportunity to interact with Kean Wong in the early parts of camp. In an inter-view, he said you were one of his little league coaches when he was growing up in Hawaii. At what age did you coach Kean in Hilo and was it somewhat surreal for you to have him in camp on another team you’re coaching now?

KC: It was surreal getting to work with KW this spring. His father played for my grandfather, I played for his father, his brother played for my uncle, he played for me (now twice, the first time he was 14 and I was home from col-lege). Our two families really are synonymous with baseball in our hometown and it's fun to carry on that shared family story into the big leagues.

Willie Mays turns 89 this week. What was it like meeting him for the first time?

KC: Ridiculously cool. He told me, "that's too bad, maybe one day you'll get to coach the players." I asked, "what do you mean?" He replied "well aren't you the guy who coaches the bench?" I was still confused, he clarified "Aren't you the Bench Coach?" Finally I got it and said "ohhh haha." I was so in awe of him I had no idea he was yanking my chain. It was a moment I'll remember forever. And I'm sure he'll remember me for my sense of humor.

If you’re going to a movie, what is your fa-vorite movie theater snack (either one you bought at the theater or bought beforehand and snuck in)

KC: I'm sneaking in sour patch kids to go with some buttery popcorn and a coke icee.

SEASON TICKET MEMBER HERO OF THE WEEK

Each week we'll highlight a Giants season ticket member or members who are step-ping up during this tremendous time of need. This week we salute the work of Aaron Lim

As restaurants continue to have a diffi-cult time during the shelter in place order, Lim wanted to give back to his Chinatown community. He developed a plan to deliver meals from his favorite Chinatown restau-rants to his friends and family all throughout Bay Area.

Word is spreading about all that Lim is doing as last weekend he delivered over 70 meals. Instead of accepting gas money for delivery, Aaron requests that his friends and family make a donation to support the Chinatown Community Development Center. This non-profit has been focused on helping prevent the spread of COVID in the Single Room Oc-cupancy Housing .

The meals are locally sourced from China-town restaurants. Lim's determination to help his community has brought hope to these restaurants and the Chinatown Com-munity Development Center.

JUNIOR GIANTS AT HOME

As an effort to keep Junior Giants connected while sheltering in place, the Giants Community Fund has announced the launch of Junior Giants At Home. Set to begin in May, the four-week virtual season will include home-produced videos from Gabe Kapler and his coaching staff to help intro-duce the fundamentals of the game along with im-portant lessons in health, education & character development.

BEYOND THE GIANT VAULT Housed in a 5,000 square foot build-ing, the Giants Archives consists of memorabilia and artifacts from our team’s 138-year history. This trea-sure trove includes collectables such as the Giants “Creation Letter” from 1882, the “GIANTS” letters which once sat atop the Polo Grounds in

1957 and the batting helmet Pablo Sandoval wore when he hit three home runs in the first game of the 2012 World Series.

As part of the Giants Fan Page, fans can now, for the first time, learn about and view memorabilia from our collection. When we are able to return to Oracle Park items from our collection can be found either on the Alaska Airlines Club Level displays be-hind home plate or in the Giant Vault located off the O’Doul Gate.

This week, we are celebrating Willie Mays' birthday on Wednesday so head on over to the vault to check out some Mays-related items like this suitcase (above) that Mays used for road trips. Click to visit the vault

GIANTS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT | MIKE YASTRZEMSKI He grew up in Andover, Mass. an

only child, but was surrounded by a dozen cousins who lived nearby

and felt like siblings. The grandson of Hall of Famer Carl,

he accompanied his grandfather to Fenway when the Hall of Famer threw out the first pitch before the start of the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

“There was never pressure to play baseball. If I wanted to be an

artist, I could have been an artist. If I wanted to go into business? Would have been great. There was just complete support on

that side. So that’s probably why I never felt the Yastrzem-ski pressure. People always

ask about the name and the shadow, and I never felt like

there was one because nobody ever cast one over me. Even when people on the outside will try to, the people on the inside defended and shielded me from it.’’ said Mike.

After his father passed away, Mike and Carl grew closer. Dave Betten-court, who runs a baseball acad-emy in Haverhill, Mass., gave Mike a key to the facility so he could work

in private with Carl on Sunday mornings during high school.

Mike says his mother never saw him do homework because it was always done right after school. Organized and focused, he want-ed to get it out of the way before baseball or hockey practice.

Attended Vanderbilt where baseball coach Tim Corbin was a huge influence. “I felt for my entire life that I was the hardest working person that I’ve ever seen. Until I met Corbs, and I saw what dedi-cation, loyalty, accountability, all these things really meant.’’

In his senior year, was room-mates with current Giants team-mate Tyler Beede, who was a junior.

Was drafted in 2012 by the Mari-ners in the 30th round, but chose to return to Vanderbilt for his senior year. The return was in part because he felt loyal to Corbin, to his team and to the promise he made as a kid to his father that he’d get his degree.

Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in crime and society, and was named to the SEC All-Academic team twice.

Grandfather, Carl, is the cousin and godfather of Gregg Berhalter, the current head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team. Ber-halter’s mother’s father’s sister was Carl’s mother.

His wife, Paige, left a job as a schoolteacher to work in healthcare sales where her schedule allows her to spend more time with Mike.

FAMIILY INFORMATION- Father, Mike, was a third-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in 1984 and played for the White Sox at the Triple-A level. He passed away when Mike was 14.

- Mother, Anne Marie, worked as a pharmaceutical sales rep traveling throughout Massachusetts.

- Married college sweetheart, Paige, on November 10, 2018 in Nashville, where they live. It was nine years to the day since they had their first date at Paige’s sorority formal.

PRESS BOX EATS WITH CHEF LONGRI-YUM The Turkey Pot Pie recipe comes from a few different online recipes combined and makes for great comfort food. It’s takes Jaime and I back to our child-

hood when it was frozen Marie Callender’s pot pie night. It’s also a great way to pile a bunch of leftovers from the refrigerator into a tasty dinner!

Preheat oven to 425 and prepare the refriger-ated pie crusts as directed on the box.

Start by melting the butter in a medium size pot big enough for all the ingredients. Once melted add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add flour while whisking until it is combined well. Let it bubble for 2-3 minutes once combined to let the roux develop and the flour flavor to cook off.

Add the chicken stock and milk next. I use a whisk constantly while pouring both in to keep it from developing lumps. Once both are added bring to a slow boil and let it bubble and thicken.

I like the rustic flavor of a little carameliza-tion on my veggies inside so in a separate pan with a little canola I cook the carrot and corn at medium-high heat for 5 minutes or so until they develop a nice brown exterior and then remove from heat.

Once the sauce has thickened a bit you can add the remainder of the ingredients (chicken/tur-key, all veggies).

Incorporate all the ingredients into the sauce and then make sure you taste the filling before you add it to the pie crusts. It will definitely need salt and pepper.

Remove from heat and add the filling to the pie dish. Place the top pie crust on a remember to make some holes on top for the air to escape.

Bake 30-40 minutes until golden brown. You may need to foil the edges of the crust if they are getting too dark.

INGREDIENTS - 2/3 cup butter- 2/3 cup flour - 1 cup whole milk- 2.5 cup chicken stock- 1/3 cup yellow onion- 1/3 cup carrot - 1/3 cup canned corn

- 1/3 cup canned peas- 3.5 cups roasted turkey/

chicken- 2 pre-made refrigerated pie

crusts - Salt- Pepper

KAPLER'S KITCHEN Each week, Manager

Gabe Kapler will give us some of his favorite food spots

from around the US, in no particular order.

Some of you may have read about a lunch I had with Pablo, Shaun Anderson and Andrew Suárez in Miami this past offseason.

We ate at Fratellino on the outside patio and sampled several appetizers, but I’d

travel to Coral Gables on a trip to play the Marlins just for the Gnocchi quattro formaggi.

The cheeses are somehow su-per rich without taking away from the fresh pasta. This is among the best Italian cuisine I’ve had anywhere.

FRATELLINOCORAL GABLES, FL

MISSION ROCK Mission Rock, a partnership with Tish-

man Speyer and the Port of San Fran-cisco, is 10 years in the making and will bring new homes, innovative work spaces, exciting retail, parks, and much more to the waterfront just south of Oracle Park. Pre-construction activi-ties are underway. The first phase of the project includes two residential build-ings, two commercial buildings, retail space, and a major expansion of China Basin Park (see photo on left).

To learn more about Mission Rock visit www.missionrock.com

As part of our commitment to the com-munity, the project team constructed an interim connection to the Bay Trail right along the waterfront which has already been a big hit in the neighborhood!
