Mission Statement

We will develop self-motivated lifelong learners. We are committed to educating students

in compliance with state standards utilizing student-centered inquiry methods in a school

wide inquiry environment.

Student Vision Statement

“Through the inquiry process, I will learn and will demonstrate knowledge and skills that will

enable me to think critically and creatively.”

• Parents can communicate with their student’s teacher through email, phone, Remind, or a meeting at the school. Teacher emails can be found on the school website or in your Aeries account.

• It is important that parents have a current phone number and email account on file with the front office.

• Parents will be able to sign-up for Remind for each grade level and the entire middle school. All the teachers from that grade level will send out texts / emails with announcements and reminders of upcoming assignments, field trips, activities, etc. Please see below or the school website for sign-up information

Community Middle School Houses System

• The house system serves to foster and support academic, social, and emotional development. • The house system serves to foster interaction between students at their own and different

grade level. • The house system serves to foster mentorship with teachers from a student's past, current, and

future years. • The house system serves to foster citizenship and develop a sense of community by encouraging

high academic performance, great attendance, good behavior, and consistent involvement in extracurricular activities as an entire house through competition between each house.

House System Facts

• Every middle school student is assigned to a house for the entirety of their middle school years. • The four houses consist of UCR, UCLA, UCSD, and UCI. These are the four closest University of

California schools to San Jacinto Valley Academy. • Each house will have three deans which will consist of a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teacher.

• Within the each house, students will be divided into three advisory groups. • Each advisory group will contain a combination of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. • Each advisory group will meet with a dean from their house during the advisory period. • Throughout the year each advisory group will meet with a different dean from their House. • During the advisory period students and the dean will share the daily and weekly

announcements, monitor and encourage attendance and independent study to help meet our attendance goal, check daily planners, work on homework, and receive coaching on topics related to academic success, future goals and aspirations, social and emotional development, citizenship, and community service.

• Each house will compete against one another and the leading house will be rewarded at each monthly award ceremony.

• Each house will receive points for GPA, honor roll, attendance, good behavior, parent signed progress, Triad awards, community service, extracurricular activities, student led conference, inquiry night, etc.

• For more information and to follow the House standings go to SJVA.net Sports and Clubs

• Students will have an opportunity to join a number of after school clubs and sports. Currently SJVA offers the following boys’ sports: flag football, basketball, volleyball. Girls’ sports: volleyball, basketball, softball. Co-Ed Sports: Cross Country, Soccer, Track & Field, and Pep Squad.

Inquiry Learning

Standards are considered early in lesson planning and guide students toward questions that help them learn the core standards, concepts, and skills. Hands-on opportunities are offered throughout the year.

• Inquiry-based learning varies depending on age level and content areas to be studied. • Problem-based inquiry focuses on a problem for students to solve or learn more about. • Project-based inquiry begins with a question and focuses on the end product.

Google - Classroom Drive / Google Drive/ Google Docs

• Each student will have a Google Education account that will allow them to use the classroom Chromebooks, work on assignments through Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive, etc.

Electronic Portfolios • Every student will have their own Google Site as an electronic portfolio. • The student will keep the same ePortfolio for their duration of their middle school

career (6th-8th grade). • Students will have sections in their ePortfolio as follows: Attendance and GPA,

Benchmark Assessments Courses, Academic Goals, Awards and Recognition, Sports and Clubs, ESLRS, and Habits of Mind.

• These various sections will allow the students to track their academic process and reflect on their learning.

• At least every 6 weeks students will add work (links to their Google Drive) to the various sections of their ePortfolio. Every piece of work will be accompanied with the “Habits of Mind” reflection.

• The student portfolio will be the source of evidence that the students will use during parent conferences.

Aeries Grade Portal (Student and Parent) • Every student and parent has up-to-date access to the student’s gradebook. • It is an expectation that all students and parents have signed-up with an account. • Parents and students are required to use this tool to ensure they are informed of their

academic standing throughout the school year. • Accounts can be obtained during enrollment or by contacting the front office.

Late Work and Retake Policy • Student may only turn in two missing assignments per Triad (6 weeks). This does not

apply to a student with an excused absence on the due date of an assignment. • Students may retake or redo an assignment at any time for the entire semester if the

assignment was completed in full and turned in on time. Bi-Weekly Progress Reports

• Every two weeks advisory teachers will print out a progress report for their students.

Middle School Handbook

SJVA.NET > Departments> Middle School> Handbook

• The progress report will contain the student’s grade for each of their classes and a parent signature line at the bottom.Students are required to bring the progress report signed by a parent on the next school day.

• Students that do not return their progress report will receive a lunch detention. Student Led Conferences

• Student led conferences will take place twice a year (October and March) in the student's’ first period classroom. Students will go through their ePortfolio explaining to their parents what they have learned, their strengths, and areas they need improvement. The conference will end with student, parent, and teacher creating five goals for the next period of instruction. Since these conferences are led by the student and monitored by the teacher multiple conferences can take place at once.

Enrichment

• 7th period enrichment is available to all students for additional academic support.

• Students will work with their teachers on current assignments, reviewing previous

taught concepts, and retake assessments.

• Students not meeting the academic goal of a 3.00 GPA at the end of each Triad are

required to attend for 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks if a student’s GPA is above a 3.00

they will not be required, but may continue to attend for the next 6 weeks.

Triad Awards

• Triad award ceremonies are held on the Friday after each grading period. Two types of awards are given at these awards ceremonies: Habits of Mind and Student of the Month.

Semester Awards

• Honor Roll - Within the first two months of school, students are recognized for their honor roll achievement from second semester of the previous year. In the Spring, students are recognized for their honor roll achievement for the first semester of the current year.

• Semester Awards - At the January/February awards ceremony, teachers will recognize students for their great achievement in the classroom for the first semester.
