President’s Message

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! We are starting the 3rd decade of the 21

st Century. Where has the time

gone? I must be having fun since I will be your President for the 4th year. Time has gone fast, because I have had so much good help.

Who has more fun than the Swiss? The people who will come to the events we have planned for this year.

The Fasnacht/Mardi Gras with a Roaring 20’s Theme starts the year off with a masquerade, food, wine tast-ing and all the gambling you want to do until the end of the evening. Get your tickets now so we know how many to plan for (See the ad).

The Jass Party, Sunday, Feb. 16th, is put on by Joe Beeler and his crew. This is an event you will not want to miss. Food will be prepared by our Vice Presidents Mike & Sylvia Berchtold.

The Schwinger dinner/dance is always a sell out event, so get your tickets as soon as possible. You can join in on all the fun of the auctions and raffles as well as a wonderful dinner and dance.

Don’t forget a dinner put on by the S.J.V.S.C. fol-lowed by the Swiss Echoes Concert in April. There is always great entertainment, food and dancing.

Come and join the fun and if you want to have more fun, volunteer to help at the events. We need people to set up and put away tables, chairs and/or benches, sell script & meal tickets, help in the snack kitchen and plan and serve meals at some of the functions. Last year we had lots of volunteers. Most of the vol-unteers have been doing the jobs for years so we could use some new blood. Please call Billy Leah Berchtold at 209-982-4167 to volunteer at any of our events. She would like to thank all the volunteers from last year. Tony Berchtold, President

SJVSC Membership Totals 685!! We added 30 regular, 19 spousal and 1 social member in 2019. However, 8 of our members passed away, and quite a few dropped their member-ship BUT we are very PROUD of what we do to inspire others to be-come members!

Welcome to the following new mem-bers: Sarah and Steve Lewis of

Ceres; Marlene and Jack Ebert of Bakersfield; Tren-ton Phillips (our new caretaker) of Ripon; and Edwin and Della Genasci of Modesto!!

Congratulations to Marge Imfeld, our newest Honor-ary member. It’s a big job and commitment. Thanks for all you do Marge!!!

If you had a birthday in 2019 and on that birthday you turned 70, your dues will be one-half of the regular dues price starting in 2020 and you are now a “paying lifetime member”!! (But you must be in good standing with the Club for 5 years to get this privilege!)

DUES ENVELOPES will be mailed with this newslet-ter. If for any reason you don’t receive an envelope for dues or you have questions about your dues, please contact me immediately at [email protected] or 209-602-4366. You can mail your dues to: SJVSC P.O. Box 373 Ripon, CA 95366

The Swiss National Baseball team is looking for baseball players from the USA who may be interested in joining their team. In-terested persons would need a Swiss passport.

Please contact Chris Byrnes ([email protected] or [email protected])

directly if interested.

MARGE IMFELD - HONORARY MEMBER

It’s fitting starting 2020 that Marge Imfeld becomes our 20th Honorary Member of the SJVSC. Marge has been our Financial Secretary for the past 10+ years and keeps us in check with pay-ing bills, filing taxes and pre-senting our Profit and Losses each meeting. She has

been an invaluable member of our Club and we ap-preciate all of the volunteer hours that she has given attributed to our Swiss Club. A very well deserved induction to Marge. Next time you see her, congratu-late her and thank her for her continued service to our club!

FALL SWISS JASS PARTY November 14th was well attended with 36 Jas-sers and 2 at the Beginner table. Thank you to Joe & Theresa Beeler for their organization of the day. Sammy Beeler MC’d the day and kept everyone on track. We had a new König this year with Gery Wagner at 128 points, and Char-lene Ott as the Königin with 120 points. Those

in the money: Joe Beeler Jr, 112, Isabella Zumstein 112, Anna Bucher 111, Nicholas Ott 106, June Betschart 105, Carl Aufdermaur 102 and Rosmarie Tan-ner 100 points. Soup and sandwiches were served for lunch and just a fun time with lots of Door and Raffle Prizes! Katharina & Regina Beeler sat with Erika Rob-inson and Chris Schallberger learning how to play, and we are pretty confi-dent that they will be able to play with the winners and hold their own at the table to vie for the title in February. Yes, Jass is a complicated game. but it is also a lot of fun to play. There

are some app’s that you can download to your phone to learn. They offer Swiss Cards or just regu-lar. The Swiss version plays with a single deck, and has 6, 7 and 8 added in. We play with a double pinnacle deck and only 9, 10, J, Q, K and A are used. We also don’t have the Obenabe and Undenufe. If nothing else - download the app and then show up to learn it how we play, or just show up - we will show you how to have a fantastic day of cards, food and prizes !

Children’s Christmas Party - Forty four kids came to see Santa on Sunday, December 8th. Everyone brought delicious food to share. A wonderful time was had making special crafts set out by Marge & Erika Betschart, singing Christmas songs and of course what every-one anxiously awaited - seeing Santa and getting a gift special-ized for them. Santa’s helper Kim Widmer does an amazing job in organizing this event making it especially fun. Thanks Kim & Don Widmer, Ted & Marge Betschart, Erika Betschart, the Swiss Echoes for the Stage Decorations, Mike & Sylvia for all of the Kitchen help, and Swiss Miss Hartley Silva for help-ing throughout the event. Of course it wouldn’t have been as

special without the help of Gary and Dena Bry (aka Santa and Mrs. Claus). THANK YOU FOR YOUR

DONATIONS FOR THE CHILDRENS

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Annual Echoes Christmas Party A hundred and thirty guests enjoyed great food, friendship and fun at the annual Swiss Echoes Christmas Dinner held on Sunday, Dec. 1st at the Rip-on Swiss Hall. The decorations were sure to put us into a Christmas mood as we awaited the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This was probably for everyone the first Christmas celebration of the month, alt-hough it’s never too early to celebrate what Christ did for us all. The tables had red tablecloths, lovely poinsettias and rosemary plants, peanuts and tangerines just like in the old days when Santa came to our homes in Swit-zerland, & Lindt treats. The stage looked like a welcoming living room com-plete with decorated fireplace & toys, with room for the baby Jesus. Copper-spur caterers provided delicious Prime Rib and BBQ Chicken dinners, in-cluding red potato mashed potatoes, fresh cut green beans, mixed green salad with vinaigrette dressing, and lovely soft white rolls with butter to de-light everyone’ s taste buds. The wonderful appetizers and homemade Swiss cookies and desserts were enjoyed by all. The meal was topped off with an unending supply of red or white wine, sparkling ciders and water.

Before the end of the festivities there was entertainment by the always-exuberant Annabel Murata and her niece (and piano tuner/technician) Christina Scroggins as they sang beautiful duets of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” and “Holly Jolly Christmas”. We could’ve listened to them for hours! Swiss Echoes officers were introduced and thanked with gifts for their service. Everyone became an honorary Swiss Echoes member with a Christmas caroling sing-along led by Agnes. Sing-ing practice starts again on Tuesday nights, starting Feb. 18th for anyone who wants to join! See you at the next Swiss Echoes Christmas Party on the first Sunday of December! Articles by Barbara Masterson

Swiss Echoes Fall Concert 2019 The annual Swiss Echoes Fall Concert once again was a successful performance with about 100 people in attendance enjoying the “Cabaret Night”. We took an imaginary trip to Luzern to the hotel Rösli as we listened to songs about “Mys Schätzli” (My Sweetheart), “Junge Lieb und Junger Wein” (Young Love and Young Wine) and sang about eating the delicious “Birrewegge”. Katharina Beeler played her clari-net to accompany this song. On the way we noticed the beautiful fall colors in “Herbstgold” and heard about all the work it takes to feed a lot of people in a hotel in “Luzerner Puurechilbi”. Another food song by

the exuberant Annabel Murata, “I love Swiss Food” (and it loves me!) was a fun tune she wrote herself and managed to include a few other singers parading in with sausages, macaroni, fondue, cookies and chocolate. She even had the audience singing along! It was contagious. Then special guests, the “Kapelle Kariott” en-tertained everyone with three pretty tunes on the accordion (Charlotte Ott), the soprano saxophone (Theresa Ott), the piano (Helen Ott), the bass (Nick Ott), and the Ratchett (Carl Ott). After all that food and entertain-ment it was time for bed, but, alas there was a dream – “’s Träumli” about a cannibal and a kiss on a bench that did not happen. Oh well. We learned that there is absolutely nothing better than singing in, “Es goht nüd übers” and finally in the finale we learned about the town of Kufstein in Tyrol in,”Das Kufsteiner Lied” which was also a sing-along, no doubt a fa-miliar tune to all. Besides all that fun there was real eating, a raffle and dancing too. The Swiss Club served a delicious sausage dinner before the concert, there were some wonderful raffle prizes and there was danc-ing entertainment from the Ron Scheiber and Mike Inderbitzen Orchestra. The fun-filled evening was a delight for all! We hope to see everyone in April 2020 for the next concert!

West Coast Swiss Wrestling Association

This past year we had a total of 26 Eligible

participants in the Perpetual Trophy for

2019. Only one Schwinger attended all 6

Schwingfests, Steven Widmer. Based on

the Perpetual Trophy points system our

2019 Winner was Andrew Betschart; 2nd

place Steven Widmer, 3rd Place Jakob

Schallberger, 4th Place Dustin Gwerder

and 5th place Steven Schonenberger.

WCSWA would like to see the following for 2020 -- look-

ing ahead to the 2022 Basel Eidg. -More youth participa-

tion and attendance at more Schwingfest in the West

Coast not just club level; Implementation of Selection of Schwinger's to attend 2022. We are not sure how many Schwinger's the

Schwingerverband will invite to attend, but it will be for American Swiss Wrestlers, including Oregon & Washington Club's. Imple-

mentation of a plan for Basel is being looked at to include Perpetual Trophy placings from 2020-2022 year, attendance in Oregon/

Washington Schwingfests and possibly not limited to attendance at Schwingfests in Switzerland. All of this is in consideration with a

plan to be formulated during the year. It is encouraged that wrestlers attend Schwingfests in Switzerland to help them prepare and

understand what it takes to compete at the Eidg. level with Schwinger's in Switzerland. Also looking for inspiration from those who

attended previous Eidg to inspire our youth to participate and compete. Thank you for your participation in the WCSWA and keep-

ing our culture of Schwingen alive. Please contact us via email at [email protected]. Arnold Ambiel - President WCSWA.

Strolling down memory lane. . . . Do any of these look familiar? Answers on the bottom of the page.

Does anyone have any info about the Turnabout Dances that took place in the 1940’s and have photos?

It would be fun to do a story about that in the next newsletter. (If anyone wants any of these photos let

us know.)

Swiss History

Ellis Island How many of you or your ancestors came to the US via Ellis Island? It’s easy to do a passenger search at

the website https://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/. Within a few minutes I was able to determine my dad, Alois

Bucher (Lodi), came to New York on April 26, 1950 on the Queen Elizabeth. Looking a little more I found

family Alois, Anna, Erwin and Rita Bucher from Turlock arrived on the ship Maasdam on March 21, 1955.

The records go back to the 1800s so you might be able to find your ancestors. If you need help, email us or

call Erika at 209-747-2427. Anyone recognize the address listed below?

2020 is a special year for the Stanislaus County Swiss Club, as it marks our 100th anniversary. Dur-

ing the coming year, we will be hosting special events to commemorate this historic milestone. See the

calendar on the back page. The grand event will be held Labor Day weekend Sunday September 6th

2020. If you're at all interested in Switzerland and your Swiss heritage, this event will be something

you won't want to miss. The idea of forming a Swiss Club started in a wine cellar with Swiss immi-

grants. They formed the club in 1920 and the mission statement at that time was to hold a Swiss Na-

tional Day celebration on August 1st, marking Switzerland's federal charter of 1291. The Swiss picnic

as it is known has been held on Sunday, Labor Day weekend for all these years. Legend or rumor has

the first picnic held at a train loading ramp somewhere near the banks of the San Joaquin River, the

longest running south to north river in the central valley of California. We look forward to our 100-

year celebration. If you have anything to add to our celebration, please contact Ed Sciarini. 209-545-

The Imperial Valley Swiss initiated this trip and Heidi Ambiel has got it going. Stunning mountains and lakes - overnights in Zurich, Geneva, the Gruyere area, Grin-delwald, and Lucern. The highlight of this visit is the
