By Betsy LevensonFoundation Board Member and Strategic Planning

Facilitator

Beloved comedian Milton Berle once said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” And that is exactly what the newly formed Oracle Schools Foundation has done! Determined not to be discouraged by Arizona’s 49th out of 50th rank in funding for public education, a group of SaddleBrooke and Oracle residents have come together with Oracle School District parents, teachers and administrators and taken action. Under the banner of the newly formed Oracle Schools Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible organization, members recently embarked on a strategic planning process aimed at helping the Foundation make a significant and measurable difference in the Oracle School District. Mindful of Yogi Berra’s wise warning: “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else”, Foundation members worked together to build clarity and unanimity about our mission: “To provide financial and related support to ensure that every Oracle student has unlimited opportunity to succeed”; our vision: “To be a beacon of excellence in public education”; and a limited number of areas of focus that were realistic and achievable in terms of the District’s priority needs. After what seemed like endless hours spent analyzing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and external trends, members zeroed in on the broad goal areas that

Oracle Schools Foundation makes its own ‘opportunity’will constitute our three-year work plan:• Build a more sustainable and long-term Foundation structure;• Provide continuous financial support for early childhood literacy education; and• Engage the broader community in the mission of the Foundation. In conclusion, you may ask, “Why early childhood literacy as the sole beneficiary of our financial support?” With all the pressing needs out there, what made Foundation Board members focus on that one small slice of the pie? The answer, for us, became very clear. If we truly intend to be a “beacon of excellence in public education”, then we must do something about the huge number of District children who do not attend pre-school because their families cannot afford it. Pre-school, in our view, is where it all begins… so that’s where we decided we had to begin. The fact is that in less than a year of operation, the Foundation has already netted $20,000 and has earmarked most of that to enroll twelve “scholarship youngsters” for this fall’s Kindergarten Prep pre-school program. This is a great start, but we’ve only just begun. Want to be a part of this meaningful journey? It looks like justice has caught up with Joe Arpaio. The self pro-claimed toughest Sheriff in America ran into tougher judge in U.S. District Judge Murray Snow. Arpaio was found guilty of

three counts of civil contempt of court. Arpaio’s Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan was found guilty of two counts of contempt and two other Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) supervisors were found guilty of one count. This all stems from the landmark case Melendez v. Arpaio where the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department was found guilty of widespread racial profiling. Arpaio and the MCSO deliberately disobeyed court orders and withheld evidence. During the trial it was also discovered that the MCSO Human Smuggling Unit was improperly taking Latinos wallets, driver’s licenses and handbags and “stashing” the stolen property as well as illegal drugs at an officer’s house. That officer while under investigation committed suicide. Arpaio has also abused his power going after anyone willing to stand up to him or expose his corruption. He has gone after the press, county officials and judges. Over $50 million has been spent in lawsuits brought by people he has attempted to ruin. He has

misspent taxpayer dollars in sham investigations including sending investigators to Hawaii to find President Obama’s birth certificate. Arpaio even went after Judge Snow, hiring a computer expert to investigate the judge and an alleged conspiracy against Arpaio. During the trial Snow asked Arpaio if he had ever investigated him or a conspiracy against Arpaio involving him. Arpaio denied it and gave a sworn statement to that effect. Snow writes in the court’s ruling, “These statements made while Arpaio was under oath, constitute deliberate misstatements of fact made in bad faith.” This is legalese for he probably lied. Although this is civil contempt of court, the ruling left an opening for possible criminal contempt charges and if we’re lucky maybe perjury charges against Arpaio. The court could order federal oversight of the MCSO and could fine Arpaio. The judge should make him pay the fine out of his own pocket instead of the taxpayers. It also increases the chances of his political opponent Paul Penzone defeating him this time for Sheriff. It is time for Joe and the MCSO corruption to go. Let’s hope he is the next one of the hate and fear mongers (Russell Pearce, Andy Thomas, Tom Horne, John Huppenthal) to fall. Author’s Note: I have been given the opportunity to express my opinion and viewpoints on politics, national, state, and local issues as well as life in general. I hope to inform you as well as entertain you, make you smile or make you mad. I will use humor, sarcasm and occasionally anger to express my views. My intention is to hold politicians accountable sometimes bringing some heat on them and if my views make you angry or hot, remember that like my humor, it is a dry heat. These opinions are entirely my own and do not reflect the views of Copper Area News Publishers.
