SATAN’S SANCTUARY

SIEGEDANIEL 8

Page 4: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

“Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? There are many precious truths contained in the Word of God, but it is "PRESENT TRUTH" that the flock needs now. I have seen the danger of the messengers running off from the important points of present truth, to dwell upon subjects that are not calculated to unite the flock and sanctify the soul. Satan will here take every possible advantage to injure the cause. {EW 63.1} But such subjects as the SANCTUARY, in connection with the 2300 days, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, are perfectly calculated to explain the past Advent movement and show what our present position is, establish the faith of the doubting, and give certainty to the glorious future. These, I have frequently seen, were the principal subjects on which the messengers should dwell. {EW 63.2}

SatanSatan is seeking to veil Jesus is seeking to veil Jesus from our sight, from our sight, to eclipse His light; to eclipse His light; for when we get even for when we get even a glimpse of His glory, a glimpse of His glory, we are attracted we are attracted to Him. to Him. WHY DOES SATAN HATE THE SANCTUARY?

WHY DOES HE TRY TO BLOCK THE VIEW OF IT?

Page 7: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Finally, on the Day of Atonement, all the sins confessed and brought to the Heavenly Sanctuary are put on Satan the Scapegoat.

Page 8: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Satan does not want any sin forgiven and cleansed and finally put on him. For God’s people…

Page 9: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

The first thing you notice while studying the Book of Daniel Chapter 8 is that the animals used in that Chapter are animals used in the "tamid/continual/daily or evenings and mornings" and the first animal introduced is a "ram" an animal which was used for sin offering and then a "goat" an animal used on the "Day of Atonement". This brings to the attention of a bible student that something is about to happen in no other place but in the house of God. At this point we can decide to make a conclusion and end the study but it wont help truce seekers.

The second thing to be noted in this chapter is that the

word "prince" is referred to Christ and none other.

Page 10: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

The purpose of Daniel's prophecy: The message of Daniel is restoration of all that

was lost in the Babylon’s captivity. Daniel 2 presents the restoration of the kingdom, Daniel 7 focuses on the restoration of the king, Daniel 8 highlights the restoration of the sanctuary, and Daniel 10 to 12 concludes the entire book by describing the restoration of God's people from the dominion of ungodly powers. It should be remembered that we are going to deal with the sanctuary specifically the table of Shewbread which was obliterated in Dark Ages

Page 11: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Another point to make is that the goat was used on the Day of Atonement meaning this events no matter what, has to do when the people are in a solemn period when Judgment is about to be done. This chapter, its emphasis is not about the succession of Kingdoms but it has to do with the Sanctuary and the sacrificial system.

Daniel 8 also gives us the time prophecy of the cleansing of the

sanctuary giving us a hint that the chapter is talking about nothing else but the sanctuary.

Daniel 8 is an introduction to Daniel 11 which speaks about the

"Time of the End" which has to do with God's people and true worship and you cannot worship God in truth if you don't understand Jesus' ministration and the implication of the sanctuary

Page 12: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

THE THEME OF DANIEL'S PROPHECIES There are four prophetic outlines given in Daniel-chapters 2, 7, 8 to 9

and 10 to 12. William Miller and James White took pains to emphasize that the four lines of prophecy cover the same ground and enforce the same truth. They were right.

The prophecies of Daniel are a unit Not only are the four lines of prophecy parallel, but they have one

great theme. Ellen G. White wrote: "Consider the circumstances of the Jewish nation when the prophecies of Daniel were given.” Testimonies to Ministers, p. 113. The armies of Nebuchadnezzar had descended upon the kingdom of Judah: kingdom, king, sanctuary and people were swept away by the Babylonians. Daniel was among those forlorn captives who hung up their harps beside the river of Babylon and refused to sing the songs of Zion. Along with every true-blooded Hebrew, he longed for the restoration.

Page 13: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

The Restoration In one word this is the theme of Daniel's prophecies. Through a series of visions,

God revealed to Daniel both the time and manner of the restoration: -Restoration of the kingdom -Restoration of the king -Restoration of the sanctuary -Restoration of the people   Daniel 2 Restoration of the Kingdom The restoration of the kingdom of David was the great hope of the Jews. Daniel

and his compatriots expected that God would restore the kingdom at the end of the seventy years' captivity in Babylon. (See Daniel 9:2.) Then King Nebuchadnezzar had a strange dream about an image of gold, silver, brass, iron and clay. God gave to Daniel the interpretation of the dream. Three more world empires must succeed Babylon (Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome). The fourth and last empire must be divided as the toes of a man, and a stone, representing the kingdom of God, would smite the image and break it in pieces. Then God would restore the kingdom to Israel.

Page 14: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Daniel 7 Restoration of the King Concerning Zedekiah, the last king of Israel, God had said :"And

thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end, thus saith the Lord God, remove the diadem, and take off the crown; this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high . I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until He come whose right it is; and I will give it Him.” Ezekiel 21:25-27. Never again would Israel have a king until Christ would come to take the throne. In the vision of Daniel 7, the prophet was shown that the king would not be restored at the end of Babylonish captivity. The four great empires, represented by the lion, bear, leopard and nondescript beast, must have their period of dominion. Then the Papal horn must continue for 1260 years. After that, Christ would enter the investigative judgment to receive the kingdom from His Father. Says the prophet:

Page 15: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

"I saw in the night visions, and, behold, One like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought Him near before Him. And there was given Him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve Him: His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:13, 14. Clearly, then, the theme of Daniel 7 is THE RESTORATION OF THE KING.

Page 16: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Daniel 8 Restoration of the Sanctuary To the Hebrew mind the restoration of the kingdom and the king

would be unthinkable without a restored sanctuary. In the vision of Daniel 8, the prophet was shown that the sanctuary would be "cleansed" ("restored" R .S .V.) at the end of the 2300 prophetic days. Daniel was greatly troubled about this information, for he could not understand the relation between the 2300 years and the seventy years spoken of by Jeremiah: (See Prophets and Kings, p. 554). He sought the Lord in prayer that God would not defer to restore the sanctuary. In the explanation given in chapter 9, Daniel is assured that the Jewish sanctuary would be restored at the end of the seventy years. But this was not the real and final restoration that God envisioned, for Daniel was told that the Jewish temple would again be destroyed (Daniel 9:26).

Page 17: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

It was the real sanctuary, even the one in heaven, that would be restored. Just as the everlasting kingdom and the King would be infinitely more glorious than the little kingdom of Judah, so the true sanctuary of the Israel of God would be infinitely superior to the earthly. The partial restoration at the end of the seventy years would only be a little model or type of the final restoration that would take place at the end of the 2300 years: (See Prophets and Kings, p. 714). The theme of Daniel 8 is THE RESTORATION OF THE SANCTUARY.

Page 18: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Daniel 10 to 12 Restoration of the People It has been pointed out how the first three prophetic outlines deal with the

restoration of the kingdom, the king and the sanctuary, in that order. But one important aspect of the restoration has not been dealt with specifically-the restoration of the people from the dominion of oppressing powers. It is fundamental to know that, above everything else, God is dealing with His people. The book of Daniel, like the entire Bible, is the story of the restoration of God's people. In Daniel's last vision, which was shown him by the side of the river Hiddekel, he saw the restoration of the people. At the opening of this last vision, the angel said to Daniel: "Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days.” Daniel 10:14. At the close of the vision, the angel described the climax of the drama in these words: "And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great Prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” Daniel 12:1.

Page 19: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

FOCUS: RESTORATION OF THE SANCTUARY (DANIEL 8) Now comes the crucial point. Adventists realize that Jesus entered the

Most Holy place of the heavenly sanctuary at the end of the 2300 days of Daniel 8:14. That was more than 170 years ago. Why the delay that now extends to the fourth generation of Adventists? Upon what does the restoration of the sanctuary depend? It depends upon the restoration of the people! This is the theme of Daniel 10 to 12. Thus the final circle illustrates the hub of the mighty message of Daniel. Just as there can be no restored kingdom without a restored King, and no restored King without a restored sanctuary, so there can be no restored sanctuary apart from a corresponding restoration in the hearts of the saints. This is because the condition of the sanctuary is directly related to the spiritual condition of the saints. They worship and dwell in the heavenly temple (Revelation 11:1; 13:6), not in their flesh, but in spirit-in the thoughts of their minds and the affections of their hearts.

Page 20: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Therefore the sanctuary cannot be cleansed and restored until every mind which worships and abides there is restored in the moral character to the image of God. This relationship between sanctuary and people was the great lesson of the Hebrew tabernacle. When the people were defiled, the sanctuary was defiled at the same time: (Cf. Leviticus 20:1-3; Ezekiel 5:11; Numbers 19:13, 20) and the final cleansing of the people coincided with the final cleansing of the sanctuary on the Day of Atonement: (See Leviticus 16:15-17, 30.) Sin and sinfulness on the part of God's people keep the sanctuary defiled.

DANIEL 8 VERSE BY VERSE The first thing we notice is that the chapter starts with Medo-Persia.

But this vision begins when the 2300 days begins and this is why Babylon is not mentioned that is in the days of the Medo-Persia Kingdom.

Dan 8:1: In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision

appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.

The year mentioned in this verse is 550BC. The first vision was the one mentioned is on the previous chapter. The word vision here is chazown.

Dan 8:2: And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I

was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.

Page 25: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Dan 8:3: Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

One beast having two horns meaning this was a nation have two kingdoms because horns represents kingdoms and the last kingdom grows higher than the first. From the year 539-522 all kings were Medes except Cyrus who was half Mede and half Persian. From the year 522-331, almost 200 years every single king was Persian. After Daniel chapter 8 every time that this kingdom appears in prophecy its no longer called Medo-Persia but its called Persian because the Medes have passed from the scene. What we are going to see is that the war is on horizontal level on earth on the early part, they have no controversy with God. You remember the bear was raised on one side in chapter 7 and here one horn is raised, that’s parallel.

Dan 8:5 Another power rises. Its interesting to notice

that Greece is West of Persia and Daniel was in Persia when he received the vision so the points of the compass are precise in this vision. You remember which beast represented Greece in Daniel chapter 7. Alexander the great moved from Athens to Indis Valley and conquered the world in 3 years that’s how swift he was. The notable horn represents Alexander the Great who is the first King in that Kingdom

Page 36: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

GREECE BROKEN UP INTO FOUR

Four kingdoms Four kingdoms shall stand up out shall stand up out of the nation, but of the nation, but not in his power. not in his power. Daniel 8:22Daniel 8:22

Page 40: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Dan 8:8: Therefore the he goat waxed very great - Because Alexander’s

kingdom covered a greater territory than the Medes and Persians, and the fact that he conquered them, Greece is regarded as waxing very great.

When he was strong...horn was broken - When the empire was at its peak in strength, Alexander died in a drunken debauch at about the age of 31. Just before his death, he was asked to whom the kingdom would go. The reply came back that it would go to the strongest.

For it came up four notable ones - You remember that the Leopard had four heads and here it has four horns, this is a parallel prophecy with Daniel Chapter 7. In verse 22 we see that these four notable horns are four kings/kingdoms. They were not to stand up in the power of Alexander, that is, they did not have to conquer land that was unconquered to extend their territory, and not one man was to rule all.

Page 41: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Initially the entire kingdom went to Alexander’s natural brother Phillip Aridaeus, and then to his two infant sons Alexander Aegus, and Hercules. Within a very short time these were all killed so there was no natural heir to the throne, and the battle ensued between the 36 generals for control of the kingdom. Four generals formed an alliance against Antigonus. Antigonus was slain in the Battle of Ipsus in 301 B.C., and the four generals established separate kingdoms in their territories — exactly as the prophecy stated. These were Cassander who had Macedonia and Greece in the west, Lysimachus who had Thrace and a large part of Asia Minor in the north, Ptolemy who had Egypt and a part of Syria in the south, Seleucus who had the bulk of the Persian Empire from Syria eastward.

The kingdom of Lysimachus (Thrace) only lasted about twenty years, whereas the other three divisions remained until they were incorporated into the Roman Empire. Furthermore, Thrace was in the same general direction as Macedon .

Page 42: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

Many scholars believe that the little horn that comes in the scene is Antiochus Epiphanes 171-163BC in Syrian Empire. That’s just the beginning of the many errors in Daniel 8. But there are many parallels of the Little Horn in the two Chapters are so vivid to miss the point, notable similarities are: 1. The same root word ”qeren” is used in both chapters 2. Both are described as little 3. Both become great after a small beginning 4. Both are persecuting powers 5. Both have the same target group i.e. against the people of God 6. Both of them are self-exalting and blasphemous 7. Both have crafty intelligence: one has the eyes of man and the other understands riddles, cunning and deceit 8. Both are final power upon the face of the earth 9. Both of these horns have to do with a prophetic time 10. Both of these horns extend until the time of the end and lastly 11. Both of the horns are destroyed supernaturally when Jesus comes. In a nutshell sentence, the little horn in Chapter 7 is the same Little Horn in Daniel 8.

Page 45: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

There seems to be a problem in Daniel 8, in Daniel Chapter 7 the little horn rises from the head of the forth beast but in Daniel rises from the one of the four horns that were part of the Alexander the great broken empire. It leaves the impression that in Daniel 7 it comes from the Roman Empire and in Daniel 8 it comes from the Grecian Empire. Let us go to the next verse

Da 8:9: And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed

exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

East: Greece, Asia Minor and Syria, South: Egypt and Glorious Land: Israel. There is only one Kingdom that conquered in those directions and that’s Rome. In Daniel 8, the little horn represents both Pagan Rome and Papal Rome. And you notice that the little at first it conquers horizontal and geographically but suddenly shifts and he is fighting the God of Heaven the same thing happening in Daniel 7. And you ask why is it portrayed as coming from Greece, its because the roman culture, civilization and religion had their origins in Asia Minor specifically Pergamum. The Roman Empire came out of Asia Minor that’s Pergamum which was one of the four Kingdoms after the fall of Alexander the Great.

The word daily here is an adjective that has no noun to qualify. The word simply means something that goes on and on without interruption. Its only in the sanctuary that that we find this continual/tamiyd without interruption. It was used in the ministry of the priest in the Court and the Holy Place of the sanctuary and not in the Most Holy: Exodus 28:30, Hebrews 7:23-25, Exodus 29:42, Lev 6:13, Exodus 25:30, Lev 24:1-4, Exodus 30:8.

What did all these things represent? The saving ministry of Christ. Where does Jesus minister? In the heavenly sanctuary. The little horn was going to take the heavenly ministry of Christ and cast it on earth, establish a rival ministry on earth. This verse meets its explanation in the celebration of the Eucharist in Roman Church and elements used and how the bread and wine are turned into real things and not as symbols of the ministry of Jesus. Instead of people being directed to the heavenly ministry, they are focused on earth and the man of sin. The candlestick which shines in the sanctuary was turned off in the dark ages. How about the showbread? Instead of the word of God they came with traditions. Alter of incense: merits of Jesus upon the Saints but the little horn now directs people to the earthly priests, saints and Mary. All the functions ministry of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary was placed on earth and on man. Salvation is at stake here. The taking away of the daily is the taking away of the continual ministry of Jesus in His sanctuary. How did the little horn take away the daily sacrifice and cast down the place of Christ's sanctuary? Dan. 8:11.

Page 116: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

By placing the intercession for humans into the hands of the priests through the confessional and by sacrificing Christ anew in every Mass, the papacy has removed Christ's heavenly ministry from the thinking of humanity. Daniel also saw that "an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground" (vs. 12, NKJV). What "army" was given over to the little horn (Dan. 8:12)? In the Old Testament, the sanctuary had an "army" of ministering Levites. The little horn has its own army of ministers who serve the system. "The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist [Mass] are one single sacrifice. . . . 'In this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner.' "— Catechism of the Catholic Church (New York: Dubleday, 1994), no. 1367, p. 381.

Page 117: Sanctuary Presentation 3. The Sanctuary Siege

It is through this kind of teaching that the ministry of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary has been overthrown in the minds of many Christians and its place effectively taken by misleading substitutes. Through the Mass and the confessional, the minds of Christian believers are drawn away from a continual dependence upon the mediatorial ministry of the Savior in His sanctuary. By elaborate ceremonies, all in the name of Christ, the ministry of Christ is obscured and lost sight of. The complete forgiveness that Christ wants to give to those who put their trust in His free and perfect righteousness has been usurped by a system that, in effect, takes the place of Christ Himself. Instead of relying directly on Christ and on what He has done for us, believers are taught to depend upon a church as the vehicle through which everything that Christ offers us is dispensed. This theme has been brought into stronger light here.
