I read in the Bible that all things work together for those who love God and are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28). Volume 29, Issue 8 August 2020

What a wonderful beginning!

I know it wasn’t typical, ordinary, usual, expected, routine, or any other similar word we might conjure up to describe our first month together. Isn’t it great to be working it out together?

As I write this message in my second week among you, we have connected in a parking

lot worship service, a daily devotion, ZOOM meetings, limited in-person meetings, phone calls, parking lots, emails, Facebook, and other ways I’m sure I just forgot to mention. When Doug Allen told the congregation on June 28 that Brenda and I were ecstatic about being here, he was correct. It’s not only about being near the beach or in our own home but also about a community of faith trying to figure our way through something like no other faith community ever has. What a gift from God to live in total trust that we are led through this by the great grace of God and the holy love of Jesus! Just this morning, I was given a STARS tee-shirt that read: The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. Our work with children of all ages matters, but our work with young lives stretches beyond our years in ways that our comprehension levels remain somewhere between baffled and overwhelmed. People read many things. Some have difficulty reading. Others consider it their favorite thing to do. People are different, and that’s a good thing, particularly when we learn about our similarities and differences. We learn about what is happening around us. We learn how to get from one place to another. I read in the Bible that all things work together for those who love God and are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28). I’m not sure how far our children in STARS will go as a result of being here this summer. I’m not sure what’s in store for us in the coming weeks as we strive to connect in healthy, safe, and holy ways. What I am sure of is that there are more places to go for Seaside, more ways to connect, more ways to be ecstatic, more ways to love God, and more ways to love one another. What a wonderful way to continue kingdom work together!

STARS Physical Distancing Standing On Our 6 Foot “Marks”

Dear SUMC, Gail and I want to thank you for the many ways you blessed us during my time as your interim pastor. Your love and generosity has been amazing and we are truly grateful. I am excited about your future under the leadership of Rev. Gene Cobb and the excellent staff that you have in place. As I look back across the years of ministry I’ve known, my time among you has surely been one of my brighter moments. My prayer is that God will continue to bless you and use you as a blessing to impact our world for Jesus. God bless you and keep you. Gratefully, Francis

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MEMBERS

Thank You Seaside for your LOVE and CARE

We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of our Seaside Church Family for the kindness you’ve shown us throughout these past weeks, with your beautiful cards, tearful phone calls, thoughtful emails, words of comfort, and especially your prayers during the recent loss of our son, Randy. Although we’re still processing this loss, we want you all to know how very much it means to feel the support of our friends at Seaside who have reached out to us through the pain. It was overwhelming to say the least. You continue to touch our hearts and carry us through the days ahead…and we know you were sent from God to “love” us through this. It’s a beautiful tribute to Randy’s memory, from some of you who knew him from Firestone in N. Myrtle Beach, to those who knew him through us, to some who only knew us…We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. And we praise God for Randy’s life! We love you and may God bless you all!

An Update on Re-Opening & Re-Gathering In June, Seaside's Covid Response team made plans to re-open the church offices and re-gather for worship in the Sanctuary on August 2nd, based upon the estimated timeline for entering Phase 3 in NC in July. However, an announcement was made earlier this week stating that NC will remain in Phase 2 until at least mid-August. Therefore, the plan for Re-Gathering & Re-Opening is also being postponed and Seaside will not gather for Sanctuary worship on August 2nd as we had hoped. When NC moves into Phase 3, the Covid Response Team will begin making plans for how to re-open and re-gather. Please continue to pay attention to the emails you receive from Seaside as all plans and dates will be communicated through them. In the meantime, please continue to connect with us on Sundays through digital worship on the Seaside YouTube channel.

Dear Readers, Although we hoped the deadline for

reading logs would be extended, it was not. Due to the church being closed for the past four months, many of you never got to complete a plan. If that is the case, please save your forms and continue with them for next year. If you were an early bird and did your reading early, I need your completed forms by August 5. You may mail them to me personally at this address: 212 Baroney Place Dr, Sunset Beach, NC 28468, or send them to the church with Attention: Marie Wilcox. You can also just tell me that you completed it, provide your name and the plan that you completed. Feel free to just call me at 910-575-1076 or email at [email protected]. Marie Wilcox

Seaside United Methodist Church 2020 Country Fair Fall Festival Canceled

The survey results are in and you have spoken. Although deeply disappointing, it has been decided that in the interest of volunteer and customer health and safety, this year’s Country Fair Fall Festival has been canceled. The next Country Fair event will be the Country Fair Spring Fling scheduled for Friday, May 28, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. The May 2021 sale will have the following events: Better Buys, Garden, Housewares, Sports and Leisure, Tools, Hardware and Electronics. We hope that if you have volunteered in the past that you will continue to consider volunteering for the Spring Fling.

Keep your eyes open for upcoming communications to learn more about how you can help Country Fair reach its goal of supporting Seaside’s Outreach Ministry. As well, check back to see if and when the shed will open for new donations.

Country Fair

Dear Seaside UMC family,

THANK YOU! Together, we made a difference in the lives of children in our community this summer.

This year, STARS (Seaside Teaching And Reaching Students) welcomed 16 students for a 4-week summer literacy program, from July 6-31. STARS 2020 was very different from programs offered in the past. This year, in addition to requirements of The Duke Endowment, STARS followed mandates and guidelines set out by Governor Roy Cooper, the CDC, NCDHHS, and the American Camping Association. In consultation with Seaside’s COVID Response Team, adjustments and program revisions were made to mitigate risk of COVID-19, and still offer a balanced literacy program of which we should be very proud. We waited until July 6 to start the program, and only ran for 4 weeks instead of our usual 6 weeks. We limited the number of children accepted into the program to 16 to enable physical distancing in our preschool classrooms. Everyone - teachers, teaching assistants, students, staff and volunteers - wore masks throughout the day. Students were grouped by class and did not mix as one large group for meals or other activities. We cleaned and disinfected the spaces used multiple times per day. Volunteers signed on to pick up and serve breakfasts and lunches. Everyone conscientiously washed hands throughout the day. Instead of offering field trips and enrichment activities lead by volunteers each afternoon, we dismissed the children at 1:45 pm, following the end of literacy instruction. Each student took home books and enrichment activities daily to continue to work on literacy skills. We could not safely gather families for Monday Night dinners. Instead, we met individually with parents and guardians before the program began to provide an orientation and welcome to the program, and we stayed in touch with them via email, phone calls, and Class DoJo. All these things were put in place to protect one another and build a safe, healthy, and caring learning community. Three classes, each with a Master Teacher and Teaching Assistant, were provided with 4 hours of balanced literacy instruction per day, for a total of 80 instructional hours. And the children THRIVED! While all the students’ assessment results are not yet available, we have seen some real progress in students’ reading, comprehension, and writing. Families have expressed their gratitude for the STARS program and your willingness to offer this ministry in our community. What a beacon of Faith, Hope, and Love you made possible in these strange and challenging times! Thank you for your continued support of STARS. Let us keep shining brightly! With love and gratitude, Barb Duclos Director, STARS

A Second Helping—3G Sunset Beach It’s been a little over a year since A Second Helping - 3G Sunset Beach began. Last year the team spent time educating everyone, the church, the community and Sunset Beach Island, on the concept of repurposing food. Collecting leftover food from events, and vacationers leaving their vacation home, has been our mission. Giving this food to those less fortunate, including halfway houses, recovery centers and families, has been deeply satisfying and fulfilling. In 2019 the following was repurposed:

• 14 weeks of Island vacation collections yielded 2800 pounds of food.

• The full year of 2019 yielded 7200 pounds of food and $300 in cash donations. 2020 started off strong and has continued to grow through contributions on the Island. Even though Covid-19 has changed all of our lives in so many ways, we are very blessed to witness people wanting to help others. For 3 hours each Saturday morning we continue to have our hearts swell with humility as people drive up and drop off their leftovers knowing those who need the food will have food in their refrigerators and cabinets and on their tables. Since the beginning of the year, in just 8 weeks of Island Vacation Collections, donations have exceeded 3956 pounds of food. In the first 3 weeks in the month of July, alone, we have collected over 2100 pounds of food. Saturday, July 18, we collected over 1000 pounds of food from Sunset Beach Island. By July 11, 2020, TOTAL collections (8824 pounds of food ) had exceeded ALL OF THE FOOD COLLECTED IN 2019 which was 7200 pounds of food. We brought our passion to feed the hungry with us from Arizona two years ago. Little did we know that with the help of our team and Seaside United Methodist Church we would watch that passion grow and be fulfilled beyond imagination. We have recently created a Facebook page sharing this ministry, FB: A Second Helping - 3G Sunset Beach. To remind everyone what the 3G means - we are the third generation. Holden Beach - Ocean Isle Beach - Sunset Beach. We could not do this without our team, our Church, and our God. God Bless all of you. Thank you from the "A Second Helping" Team Bert & Vicki Barman, Co-Chairs

"Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31

Well.......here we are waiting again...waiting to regather....waiting to sing God's praises in our sanctuary....waiting to see friend’s faces......waiting! But have hope and be of good cheer. We can still sing God's praises in our homes, on our beaches, in our yards, at our parks, on our bikes, walking our neighborhoods - wherever you are!! But waiting is hard...and frustrating! I miss all of you and continue to keep you in my prayers. So....let us keep waiting, keep praying and keep singing God's praises....safely!

Because we did not go into Phase 3 as we had hoped, we will need to postpone the Wednesday Meditations until we are able to be in the sanctuary. The sanctuary is also waiting for us!!! I'm sure if the walls could talk, they would let us know how lonesome it has been but that God is still there waiting with us! We'll look forward to a time of music and meditation.

We are also postponing our September 13th organ concert by Jay Brooks until late January. We want as many as possible to share in this concert and hopefully by then we will be able to gather together safely. I'll let you know more details as they become available. But rejoice that at this date we still have an organ concert scheduled for October and the Raleigh Ringers concert in November!! Let's start praying now that we can keep these dates. Join me in prayer!!!

As August begins we are bidding a fond farewell to Lynn Enzor as our Assistant Director of Contemporary Music. Join us on August 2nd during the worship service as we thank Lynn for almost 15 years of hard work, dedication and service to Seaside and to God. While she is not leaving the area, she is taking a deserved retirement from the weekly church leadership role. Happy Retirement Lynn!! We thank you, love you and will miss you!!!

Until we meet again.....keep watching and waiting.....and singing! Kathryn
