Letter from the Co-Director RonWilson

[email protected] Hello to all Big Sandbar members. This is Ron Wilson. The Big

Sandbar has been very busy in 2013. I would like to thank all the

members who have helped out with organizing meets, runs and

other activities throughout the chapter.

A special thanks goes out to Don Spence and Mudfish for

putting in countless hours organizing, coordinating and running our

national meet in Rhinebeck, NY, at the Dutchess County

Fairgrounds. It was a huge success due to all the BSB members

there helping out. Thanks to Alice and Wendy, too, for putting up

with it all. How about that Lou “Rocket” Re? WOW!

On a local note, I would like to thank the members who have put

together runs here on the Island for us to enjoy. Joe and Laura

Manicozzi for the Son of the Monster Mash redo, Doug and Karen

St. John for being our liaison with the South Shore Motorcycle

Club, Steve Sorenson for organizing a run on May 19 (which will

now take place on August 4th due to rain; details to follow via e-

mail and Facebook), and Pip and Claire Sarser for organizing their

June 30th ride and picnic.

The club is humming along as summer has kicked into high

gear, and that is due to all the hard work the BSB board members

have put in. Thanks for making our job easy.

I mentioned e-mail and Facebook. I would like to remind

everyone of meetings and runs and send this great newsletter

(kudos to Layla) via e-mail. So if you are not getting my e-mails

and you have an e-mail address, please send your current email

address to [email protected]. If you are on Facebook,

look for our Big Sandbar Chapter group and request to be a

member.

Mudfish and I are looking forward to another great summer with

the BSB chapter. As our founder Penny Nickerson has said in the

past, “You join for the bikes and you stay for the people”.

Respectfully,

Ron Wilson

Son of the Monster Mash April 21, 2013

MacArthur Airport, Ronkonkoma, NY

After being washed out by Hurricane

Sandy, the Son of the Monster Mash was

finally held on Sunday, April 21, 2013. As

Bald Hill was still unusable due to the storm,

this 16th annual car show/swap meet/flea

market/custom motorcycle show was held in

a back parking lot at MacArthur Airport in

Ronkonkoma, NY.

Despite the sun shining, it was a particu-

larly cold day. However, there were plenty of

vendors and tasty treats to keep us warm.

From bike parts found in Grandpa’s garage

to treasures from Grandma’s attic and every-

thing in between, there was something for

everyone at this eclectic meet. There was a

car show, swap meet, and flea market in ad-

dition to the custom motorcycle show.

Laura and Joe Spoto worked with

Son of Monster Mash organizer Mike

Dixon to make the show finally hap-

pen. Thanks to Laura and Joe for all of

their hard work!

Vintage Motorcycle Show & Swap Meet Sandbar & South Shore Motorcycle Club

Amityville, NY Photos: Bob Provencher May 5, 2013

Once again Big Sandbar and the South Shore Motorcycle Club

joined forces to put on a great vintage motorcycle show and swap

meet. The event was held at South Shore’s club house in Amityville,

NY. Thanks to Karen and Doug St. John for all their hard work as our

Sandbar liaison with the South Shore members.

This is the second time our two clubs joined forces to put on this

judged show. The trophies were made and painted by South Shore

President Rich LeGrow. Made up of various bike parts, the trophies

were pretty awesome. As you can see (bottom right on the next page),

the trophies are so cool that Lou Re had to fight members off who

were trying to get their hands on his trophy!

Doug and Karen also worked with the South Shore members on

this year’s t-shirt design, which are still available. Thanks again to

Doug, Karen and all the members of South Shore for all their hard

work putting together such a nice meet!

Another year goes by and the Big Sandbar Chapter

once again descended on the Rhinebeck AMCA National

Super Meet. This is our Chapter’s annual foray into the big

leagues. This year, as always, we were well represented by

our membership.

With myself and Don Spense on the board of the event,

we arrived on Tuesday evening to help organize the meet.

Wednesday saw us out on the fairgrounds chalking up the

over 700 vendor spaces for the next day’s arrival. It was a

long day, and the crew worked tirelessly to get this done.

My hat’s off to the vol-

unteers.

Thursday morning

we were back on the

grounds again to open

up for the vendors. Let

me say that in nearly

seven years of doing

this meet, this particular

Thursday was by far

my biggest challenge.

With a steady down-

pour from 7am to near-

ly 10pm this morning,

standing out at the ven-

dor gate greeting the

nearly 400 cars and

trucks that arrived was

indeed a big challenge! By 10am I was so soaked that it

didn’t matter anymore, and we ended up having a good

time with it! Jude Zimmerman and Ron Wilson were also

at the gate. They were handing out event booklets.

Friday came, and the weather was beautiful for the rest

of the weekend. Hurrah! The show was very well attended

and Big Sandbar was well at work.

With our member Louis “Rocket” Re on the grounds to

provide an amazing Evil Knievel jump show and the Evil

Knievel Museum on hand, as well as the Wall of Death,

not only was Big Sandbar well represented, but we also

raised the bar for the this world-class event.

Donny was very busy and got amazing help from

members Bill and Ali Sharpe. Ali worked the museum the

whole weekend, but we nearly lost her when we arrived on

Saturday morning. Turns out, when we arrived that morn-

ing, we found that two of the museum’s helmets were not

where they had been the night before. We were all very

nervous, to say the least. Thankfully, though, when the

owner of the helmets arrived on site from his hotel, he had

the helmets in tow. We all breathed a huge sigh of relief,

especially Ali.

Friday night we had our banquet. There were over 15

members from the chapter in attendance. The food was

great, and Donny and

Patch from the Wall

of Death entertained

us with their goofy

back and forth banter.

The judging was

again an amazing feat

with 88 bikes to be

judged. Don Spense

handled this part of

the meet with great

success.

There were over

10 members of our

chapter that pitched

in on this very diffi-

cult endeavor, includ-

ing Don, Bob Pro-

vencher, Pip Sarser, Ron Wilson and Larry Mclaughlin.

Bill and Ali Sharpe, along with Nicole Spense and her boy-

friend, worked the inside table for judging registration and

info. If you want to learn about the old bikes and how they

should be restored, this is a wonderful thing to get involved

with.

The meet is one of the highlights of our calendar

each year, and from my perspective, it was another big suc-

cess for the club. If you haven’t had the change to get to

Rhinebeck, plan on attending next year. This meet is con-

sidered to be one of the largest gatherings of antique mo-

torcycles in the world, and the venue is always top-notch.

Each year the meet grows larger and features more and

more cool stuff. It is well worth the trip.
