MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Term 4 is always a time of mixed emotions as we celebrate our successes for the year but also have to say farewell to a number of students and their families, many of whom have become close and valued members of our school community. Best wishes for a successful and rewarding future to those students and their families who are leaving Sanderson.

Everyone at Sanderson was delighted to welcome a visiting group of Chinese Middle Years Principals from Anhui province on Thursday the 5th December. The principals were impressed with the work of our students and the excellent facilities at the school. Many visitors to the school from interstate and overseas are always delighted with our innovative programs, facilities and polite and hardworking students.

It is with great sadness that we farewell some esteemed educators whose contribution to the school has been enormous. Our Assistant Principal, Mrs Jan Moore has chosen to retire at the end of this year. Mrs Moore has been a significant contributor to school excellence over many years and has committed to many teaching innovations. We also farewell Mrs Iolanthe Sutton, senior Teacher, from the school. Mrs Sutton’s contributions to teaching many of our great student programs, and her commitment to student engagement in sustainability and gardens have been valued. Mrs Sutton was recently awarded the National Innovative Teacher of the Year award. We also farewell our fabulous teachers Mrs Danielle Ford to Nakara Primary school and Mr Jacob Andreae to Casuarina Secondary School. Mr Erv Moyd who has been a valued teacher here for many years has also chosen to retire. We are also farewelling administration staff including Mrs Vivian Jenner and Mrs Leisel Nordine. Their support of the school has been appreciated. We are also farewelling our GEMS staff and I personally wish to thank Jane Slater, Samantha Rioli and all the ladies involved in GEMS.

During my first 3 months at Sanderson Middle School I have been impressed by the excellent work of all our students and the professionalism of staff. I look forward to continuing to work with all in the school community in 2014. My personal thanks go to so many dedicated teaching colleagues and a wonderful administration staff for your support of me. So many of you have been extra generous in offering your help. School Council members have also been extremely supportive. Thank you too to The Smith Family and to the many community organisations who continue to make such generous and much appreciated contributions to the life of our school.

I look forward to having the NT School of Music on campus with us in 2014 and to growing a successful partnership that will generate many ARTS options for our students. Mr Andy Mison, principal of the NT Middle School welcomes the move to Sanderson Middle School.

My best wishes to you and your family for a safe and happy

festive season.

Events . Indigenous Languages and Culture Sanderson Middle School is proud to announce that 40% of our student population is Indigenous.

This past semester, approximately 120 SMS students who are participating in Indigenous

Languages and Culture and some Indigenous History classes have had the opportunity to

participate in some cultural workshops with various Indigenous elders from our community.

Our first workshop was held in Term 3 with

famous Yirrkala elder, artist and land care

activitist Banduk Marika. Marika is the

Grandmother of Iesha Poyner Gambley and

therefore she was more than happy to come

along and workshop with our students about

traditional Indigenous art and landcare. It was

a once a lifetime opportunity and I’m sure the

students won’t forget.

At the end of Term 3, the students in Mrs

Davison’s Indigenous History class had the oppor-

tunity to participate in a bush walk at Homes Jun-

gle with Arrernte elder Colleen Haynes who hap-

pens to be Amelia Bell’s Grandmother. Mrs

Haynes taught us about how to collect Merrepen

or Sand Palm leaves to use for weaving tradition-

al Aboriginal dilli bags and baskets. The sharing

of knowledge between SMS families and our

school is highly valued at our school.

Two weeks ago, approximately 80 SMS students en-

rolled in Indigenous Languages, Indigenous History

and IEU had the privilege of working with Yirrkala

elder Andrew Galitju. Mr Galitju has worked with

students enrolled in Indigenous Languages for 15

years and he was very glad to return to Sanderson to

share his cultural knowledge with our students. As it

turns out, Iesha Poyner Gambley is also related to Mr

Galitju. Students participated by learning how to:

speak some Yolngu Matha (the language of Aborigi-

nal people who come from Arnhemland, throw a

traditional spear (gara), and do some traditional

Yolngu dances (boongal djama) including the salt wa-

ter crocodile dance (baru), wallaby dance (weiti) and

the women’s (miyalk) dance. It was impressive to see

how proudly each of the students participated in the

events.

Journey to Recognition Sanderson Middle School was one of only two schools in the Darwin region who proudly sup-ported the Journey to Recognition walk held at the Darwin Botanical Gardens earlier this term. The purpose of the Journey to Recognition which has ventured all over this wonderful country of ours, is to promote a change to the Australian Constitution to include Indigenous Australians. It is wonderful that SMS supports such an event and that such a large cohort of students and parents and teachers from highly diverse cultural backgrounds also chose to support it. Special thanks to Andrew Wills and Nathan Wolters from SMS Clontarf who also joined us on the day. Out of the 50 places that we had available, 50 students promptly returned permission slips and were able to attend. The staff from the Recognise committee expressed their gratitude for our involvement and noted the excellent behaviour of our students. Well done Sanderson!

“From Little Things Big Things Grow” SMS Tribute to Gurinji elder Vincent Lingiari and Brian

Manning During our assembly on Wednesday 13th November 2013, Mrs Davison’s Indigenous Languages, In-

digenous History and PCG classes dressed up as Gurinji stockmen and Gough Whitlam to celebrate

the lives of Gurinji elder, Vincent Lingiari and recently passed, Brian Manning. They performed the

song by Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody called, “From Little Things Big Things Grow.” The students

were accompanied by SMS principal Mrs Veel, Ms Cada and SMS Music Teacher Casey Nicholsen

on guitar. The whole assembly joined in and sang the chorus which is meant to remind us all of the

importance of standing up for others, working hard to build respect for all Australian cultural

groups and in particular, Australia’s first people, and that resilience and persistence will achieve

great outcomes. The students made us all very proud.

Sanderson Middle School would like to welcome all parents who feel their skills could be used in our

classes to phone the school. Mrs Davison

Smith Family Parents Fo-rum

Very early on Saturday the 16th of November 2013, SMS students Iesha Poyner-Gambley, Tiesha Hewitt, Glen Pasigna, Jonus Niki and Jeffey I, got up to attend and per-form at the Smith Family Fo-rum. The students, who come from a variety of cultural back-grounds including Filipino, Vi-etnamese, Yolngu, Aboriginal and Torres Strait, performed three traditional Yolngu dances and sang the Gurrumul Yunipingu song, “Galiku” in front of CE Peter Chandler as well as principals, parents and teachers from the Darwin region. Their proud performance is a testament to the importance of teaching and learning Indigenous languages in all Australian schools as it encourages reconciliation and a deep valuing of all Indigenous Australian cultures and people. Well done to those students!

SNAP SHOT 180 with Mission AustraliaSNAP SHOT 180 with Mission AustraliaSNAP SHOT 180 with Mission AustraliaSNAP SHOT 180 with Mission Australia Throughout Semester 2, PCG 10, with the assistance of Mission Australia, took part in

the SNAPSHOT 180 program. SNAPSHOT 180 is a youth development project that fo-

cuses on youth expression and empowerment. SNAP SHOT 180 gave students the opportunity to lead, implement and develop a digital

production. By using the medium of multimedia, our students were able to explore and

express themselves via the technique of digital storytelling. PCG 10 visited a number of Darwin landmarks, the Waterfront, Botanical Gardens,

Nightcliff Beach and our school, and took photographs using their iPads. Their photo-

graphs were to be ones that illustrated what Darwin meant to them. At the end of the sessions their photographs were printed, and students, through scrap-

booking, created a photo album that they could then keep. The girls all had a wonderful time and appreciated the time and assistance that Alana and

Matt, from Mission Australia, gave them. Thank you Alana and Matt. Ms Ford and PCG10.

PARENT CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2014PARENT CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2014PARENT CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2014PARENT CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2014

The Parent Contribution has been determined by our School Council at $120 per family.

We are confident that your children’s education at Sanderson Middle School is worth a lot more than $3 per week. Where else could you invest such a small amount that would provide the same benefits? Parent contributions have remained at $120 for a number of years and the School Council at their last meeting changed the contribution to $120 per family, rather than for each student, due to the increased cost of living pressures that families are currently facing.

Why ask for Parent Contributions? Why ask for Parent Contributions? Why ask for Parent Contributions? Why ask for Parent Contributions?

Schools are provided with funds by the government to pay for the costs of basic educational needs e.g running costs such as electricity, water and maintenance of buildings and grounds (cleaning, mowing, repairs).

The money provided is not sufficient to pay for the costly materials needed in specialist courses eg photographic equipment, film, clay, musical instruments, technical studies materials and tools, cooking ingredients, sewing materials and sports equipment.

Nor is it sufficient to maintain the school bus which is used extensively for school excursions.

In order for students to access enhanced educational opportunities, parent contributions are voluntary but would be a valuable asset to the school.

Payment of ContributionsPayment of ContributionsPayment of ContributionsPayment of Contributions

Payment can be made at the school office by cash, cheque or EFTPOS. Payments can be made each term if full payment in Term 1 presents a difficulty.
