sandra cinto runs circles around her techniques, supports and narratives, shreds the borders between painting and drawing, and furthermore enlarges her work through architectural thinking, seeking to establish dialogues with the exhibition space, while also thinking historically, when her work incorporates past events that have taken place in the geographical place of the exhibition.

LIQUID MOVEMENT

now, in march 2016, an experiment is taking place: water and waves are no longer just metaphors in sandra cinto’s works, they are not only visual signs – now, water is incorporated by the artist as a natural element, and is also present in its physical qualities and in the power of its movement as it flows in accordance with the law of gravity. Water is the vehicle of pigments, it stains the support as it runs and spreads to format wide blue planes.

the show acaso e necessidade [chance and necessity] allows for the recovery of a series of questions already advanced in previous periods, related to experimentation with language and existential reflection.

two facts should be recalled to form the basis of a new perspective on the artist’s work. the first is a work that used a bathtub, in which sandra cinto drew a liquid design and then filled with water up to a certain level (from 1999, shown at tanya Bonakdar Gallery, in new York). after that, the artist produced installations with a sink with a dripping faucet, abrigo impossível [impossible shelter], 1999, at the Bienal do mercosul.

the second relevant fact, to arrive at the present exhibition, was a time in late 2015, in Japan, when the artists manipulated fabrics and papers soaked in water and pigments. a Japanese outlook now returns as a daily experience with the country’s culture.

two large paintings, from 2016, measuring 300 cm x 750 cm, feature the representation of a sheet of blue water that spreads to nearly the entire area of the canvas, as though it were a soft waterfall, formed by the falling flow of that liquid with pigment. Behind this waterfall, we see vestiges of mountains and high rocky peaks. the field of blue made by the water that makes its own depiction is caught by gravity and tumbles downward. for their part, the rocks of the earth rise upward, contrary to the force of gravity. two forces are counterposed, two opposite directions establish a rhythm for each canvas. the artist’s constructive control always strives to direct the flow of the colored liquid, but the water has a power to follow its own course. chance and the unexpected go into the making of these canvases, just as chance and the unexpected are part of life. in this current process, sandra cinto has to face the unforeseen – both in art as well as in her daily life. the artist must try to be successful in her action, coping with the incalculable. she submits herself to the power of nature, while insisting on the power of artistic practice.

the field of blue color is what provides the indications for the (dis)appearance of the rocks, delimiting the space to be occupied by the drawing pens. color fields and lines, in a gracious and intimate dance of concealment and subtle revealing. it is up to the artist to know how to listen to the color fields, to discover the possibilities opened by them, and to assume the work’s co-authorship. an artistic strategy is thus established whereby the chance instated by the flowing blue is combined with the artist’s freedom of choice. two urges to occupy the plane and construct the space are thus presented, two desires for solving the relationships between fullness and emptiness.

only a small area remains in the upper portion of the paintings. the sky is a scant band, sometimes cloudless, sometimes with liquid clouds that constitute a generous blue curtain that gains prominence on the canvases. the occupied areas and the patches of white establish pictorial values that attract the gaze. if previously the ocean waves were convulsively churning, now the blue waterfall is smooth, transparent and calm.

ART AND LIFE IN THE MOVEMENT OF THE WATERS

Page 3: SANDRA CINTO - Casa Triângulo · 2016-04-15 · sandra cinto runs circles around her techniques, supports and narratives, shreds the borders between painting and drawing, and furthermore

the paintings take on a strong monochromatic aspect. they open a space for the affectionate gaze. these two paintings, displayed facing each other, express the slowness of both their making and their appreciation. We find ourselves before landscapes, large panoramic scenes where time moves unhurriedly: the blue beckons for our perusal; the movement of the downward-spreading movement is tranquilizing; and the small parts of rocky ground are drawn with the greatest delicateness.

it should be noted, for future studies, that a large part of sandra cinto’s work can be analyzed based on the concepts of a liquid life and a fragmented life, following the thought of Zygmunt Bauman, a contemporary author of a vast bibliography.

if in the previous phase a tragic view emerged, with the voluptuous baroque of the waves in vigorous movement, now, in this exhibition, the three works invite the viewer to peaceful contemplation. this aspect is explicit in the white sculpture/installation a ponte [the Bridge], 2016, measuring approximately 700 cm x 110 cm, with a little toy horse on one side and a rocking chair on the other. on the one hand, the playful and the childish – on the other, solitude and maturity, perhaps old age. a ponte points to the cyclical nature of time and to the permanent crossings of art and life. it should be remembered that the bridge is a recurrent form and sign in the work of sandra cinto, something that is both possible and impossible to be crossed, yet always present and unavoidable. the bridge speaks of a need of the living in their movements and adventures along the edge of cliffs, with a nod to nietzsche.

sandra cinto’s works throb with the desire for living, recognizing its limits and uncertainties. as stated by friedrich nietzsche, this desire finds support in the proximity of art as a game of the artist and of the child, constructing and destroying innocence and making art a means of playing with oneself. the bridge, often present in sandra cinto’s works,

embodies these possibilities of construction and destruction. moreover, through the lens of nietzsche’s thought, sandra cinto’s art is seen to be pervaded by sensations, based on a free personal lyricism. and if the phase of the churning waves possesses a dionysian tone, now, in 2016, her paintings, drawings and objects have a certain apollonian tenor. sandra cinto’s work is increasingly reaffirming the potential of living.

the artist’s work involves an oneiric truth, which among other possibilities can be traced by the presence of water in the production of her works – whether the representation of water, or the use of the natural element of water. Gaston Bachelard, referring to water and to dreams, writes that this liquid is a poetic element, present in our archetypes. Questions that involve water therefore allow for a closer approach to the world and a better knowledge of reality. When we look at water – which is related to organic interests, well-being and libido – we are struck by a special melancholy.

continuing with Bachelard, in sandra cinto’s work, through her artistic/childlike whimsical drifting, the ever-present, powerful, precious and seminal water is channelized into art to create another world, to reflect on life itself.
