The Peaks Resort and Golden Door Spa first opened as The Doral Telluride Resort
and Spa on May 22, 1992. No other hotel or resort property in the Telluride region,
then or now, is able to offer the location, views and the amenities that this property
offers in Telluride. Negotiations on the site, located on Lot 128, began in the late
1980s between The Telluride Company, the master developer of Mountain Village,
and Bruce Blum, grandson of the founders of the Doral Hotel company. Doral was
famous at the time for extensive real estate holdings in New York City as well as
several prominent boutique hotels in New York and what was then the largest golf
resort in the country, The Doral Resort and Country Club in Miami, Florida.
The Doral Resort and Country Club was also famous for its world renown Saturnia
International Spa Resort, the most exclusive destination Spa complex of its day.
Negotiations resulted in Doral purchasing Lots 128, adjacent 122 & 123 and several
single-family home sites in Mountain Village. The single-family home sites have been
sold off throughout the years.
In the fall of 1989 a team of
highly specialized marketing
and sales professionals were
assembled to conduct what would
now be referred as a Broker
Referral Program to launch
presales of the fabulous new
resort which was slated to be
built as only the third building in
Tellurides Mountain Village.
Nels Cary, now the owner/
broker of Peaks Real Estate, was
recruited from another Colorado
resort to be part of that team.
The idea was to generate approximately $2 million in sales within the local
community as a way to include Telluride citizens in the ownership and future of the
resort. A great deal of excitement was generated within the community and word
spread rapidly outside the community and around the United States, as The Doral, a
365,000 square foot facility with nearly 65,000 square feet of recreational amenities
