PREFACE Childhood is perhaps the most momentous period in an individual’s journey of life. They are characterized by creative bursts of energy, immense curiosity about the self and the world. The experiences gained as children often stay with us throughout life.

The conditions that necessitate me to initiate this project was

I saw children unable to stand in the morning assembly, some feel giddiness, and some even fainted.

While checking the lunchboxes I found many children not bringing proper lunch. Some brought Maggie, some without vegetable; few brought only namkeen or biscuits.

Many of them lack activeness, look weak…this insisted me to initiate this project to make children observe, identify, classify different food groups, healthy and unhealthy food. The children will also discover the fact that A food can make you healthy, ill or can be life threatening.

Health is the biggest component of life. Now a day the market is flooded by large variety of food items. This project helped the children to make healthy food choices to stay healthy, as it is said that HEALTHY BODY HAS HEALTHY MIND, HEALTH IS WEALTH and so on.

Healthy body can be gained by eating healthy food. I tried to inculcate healthy eating values by providing opportunities to the students to experiment and have on experiences which can enthuse them and leave an impact of lifetime. This will improve health and assist children to develop into wise consumers. The other goal of this project is to create opportunities for children to become familiar with healthy food choices through games, crafts and tasting challenges so that they will be more likely to make smart choices..

Then the teacher explains that in the same way, germs are also transmitted .we cannot see them but they are in our hands, which are harmful and can cause illness, there-fore it is necessary to wash hands before eat-ing. The teacher demonstrated thecorrect way of washing hands, using soap and water. A soap was kept in the classroom for developing the habit of washing hands.Do not celebrate only a day as handwash Day .

Activity 21

To Create Kitchen cum Herbal garden

This activity was to promote the value of eating fresh real food.Growing a herb garden is an easy way to teach kids about how plants grow. They will also love being able to pick the leaves that can then be used to add flavour meals. This activity also creates environmental awareness which is the key to the future. We need our children to learn to respect what is around them. Planting seeds and watching them grow is one of life’s great rewards . We choose the place near physics lab as it gets sunlight for maximum time. The children were asked to collect all the empty pots lying in the school campus. The children were asked to fill the pots with soil. The children were asked to bring seeds. They collected seeds like mustard, jeera, ajwain, dhaniya, beans methi etc. Next day few were asked to sow the seeds and water them. Then the children were asked to bring garlic cloves, ginger potato and sow them in the pots. Next they were asked to bring mint branches ,small plants of tulsi, aloevera, marigold and sow in the pots. Next we created basic shapes with bricks prepared the soil bed,and planted flowering creepers in it. All the children were assigned the duties to water the plants daily.

Students of class IIIA collecting pots.

Page 22: SANGHMITRA TIWARI - kvbarkuhi.edu.in brought Maggie, some without vegetable; few brought only namkeen or ... Following questionnaire was ... asked to look for manufacturing or packaging

22

This developed the habit of caring for plants, and they also came to know that plants are also living beings they to need care ,they also need water and food, like us.

Gardening is educational and develops new skills including:

• Responsibility – from caring for plants • Understanding – as they learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die with-

out water, weeds compete with plants) • Self-confidence – from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown • Love of nature – a chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and

pleasant place • Reasoning and discovery – learning about the science of plants, weather, the envi-

ronment, nutrition and simple construction • Physical activity – doing something fun and productive • Cooperation – including shared play activity and teamwork • Creativity – finding new and exciting ways to grow food . Nutrition – learning about where fresh food comes from.

Planting seeds and watching them grow helps children learn about the growth process, the environment and the food they eat.

Guiding the children to fill the pot with soil.

Challenges and difficulties in implementing this project

Barkuhi being a hard station, and a project school, where children come from distant remote places Here only weekly market is organized .It was challenging and I was in confusion whether I will be able to achieve the desired goals of my project .but I am very thankful to the parents specially the mothers who cooperated with me, and took the pain to arrange healthy food for their child like arranging fruits ,sprouts, leafy vegetables, and salads daily.

Another challenging condition arised, when our principal sir asked me to take 15-20 minute session about my project with all the primary staff meeting. I was supposed to tell about the procedures of my project and to gain some more ideas to enhance my project. But I was surprised, when a comment came that I should not ask children to bring fruits daily, as they are very costly and everyone cannot afford it. By this I am trying to create discrimination among the childrens. This enforced me to give a thought on the socio-economic conditions of different families.

It was the election time and the buses were involved in election duty due to which there were so many absentees in the class which hindered the smooth execution of my project.

While planning for creating herbal cum kitchen garden ,it was really challenging to find a safe and sunny place. and the soil was so tough to prepare by my small kids..

Here in Barkuhi we face water shortage problems also .

But we overcome it and I finally decided to grow our plants full of life in small con-tainers.

Page 26: SANGHMITRA TIWARI - kvbarkuhi.edu.in brought Maggie, some without vegetable; few brought only namkeen or ... Following questionnaire was ... asked to look for manufacturing or packaging

26

Facilitators and obstructions.

I was in dilemma ,whether to ask children to eat fruits daily or to stop them from bringing fruits. The next moment our music teacher shri vinayak jadhav sir explained fruits have their own importance which cannot be replaced by any other things. He gave me the idea that I should find out the nutrional value of seasonal fruits which are more nutritious than the expensive fruits. And I should not stop the children from eating fruits. I am very grateful to him for being resourceful.

All the primary staff facilitated many ideas for the betterment of my project ,like:-

Students should be involved for monitoring whether all have finished their lunch. The monitors were assigned the duties, and a star was deducted for those do not finish their lunch. Fro GRAB THE STAR activity.

Students should know the English terms of the food items they have brought. For this the students have to tell the name of the vegetable in their lunch in English.

Students should be told that various dishes can be prepared from the same food item. A worksheet was given to the children.

Use of technology can also be involved. Ppt was designed for recapitulation.

Thank you to all my colleagues for being so cooperative and supportive.

This urged me to search the library, and internet resources

Page 27: SANGHMITRA TIWARI - kvbarkuhi.edu.in brought Maggie, some without vegetable; few brought only namkeen or ... Following questionnaire was ... asked to look for manufacturing or packaging

27

Funny moments

When I told the children about the importance of seasonal fruits, like amla..and this was the time when the market was flooded with amla. Next day Banashree and Pi-yush singh brought amla, when they took a bite of it ,because of sour taste the face made by them made the whole class laugh.

Secondly when Dorina gave a new name to sprouts –poonch wala chana.

Impact of innovation and its evaluation.

The children started eating healthy food and they came to know the importance of balanced diet or proper food.

After finishing the target of 50* their lunch box were regularly checked, I found that the children's were bringing fruits and sprouts ,salads ,leafy vegetables regularly. After this project a child learns about importance of food. Balanced diet plays an impor-tant role in the proper development of every individual.

School gardens help our children grow stronger as well as helping children lead happier, healthier lives and helped them acquire the essential skills they need to fulfill their potential in a rapidly-changing world and make a positive contribution to society as a whole.

Cost effectiveness implementation of the practice

Its completely free!

High order thinking skills.

Can food be used as a preventive measures to many diseases?

Can a diet increase or decrease our weight?

Can a healthy diet increase our scores?

Why ginger did not germinate?

Why the plants drooped down, after two days holidays.(II sat sun)

Bench mark

When a child grow up ,they turn out to be more aware and hence more knowledgeable in every discipline. The child develops healthy eating habits that last a lifetime! The child learns and develops the habit of care for nature and environment. They will discover that “ Food is the fact of life. And It takes a lot of la-bour and time for food to come from field to plate. so we should not waste it. “ ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD”.DO NOT COMPROMISE WITH THE QUALITY OF FOOD AS IT DIRECTLY AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH”
