NOTES FOR CHRISTMAS

Christmas stamps are nowavailable at the Post Office andthey are beautiful.

Put ZIP in your Christmasmail...add ZIP Codes to the ad-dress and return address.

Using the new Christmasstamp on your greeting cardsassures first-class service, forwarding if necessary, andreturn to you if undeliverable.

Shop early, mail early anduse your ZIP Code. Addressall mail clearly and completely.Don't let your mail end up in adead letter office.

Include in each parcel a cardor piece of paper showing yourname and address and the nameand address of the person forwhom it is intended; also a listof contents, then if the wrappersshould come off, your parcelwill be delivered. Pack allgifts in sturdy boxes, wrapin heavy paper and tie withstrong cord.

Gift parcels to distant statesshould be mailed by early De-cember, and those for localdelivery by December 15.

Mail early in the day andmail often.

This year's Christmasstamp is the most beautifulever. Use It on your greetingcards for priority in deliveryand forwarding.

Christmas seals should beplaced on the back of yourletters, never on "the face.Greeting cards with the five-cent Christmas stamp may besealed and contain written mes-sages; not so when mailed witha four-cent stamp.

Normally there is no de-livery of cards and letters onChristmas Day other thanSpecial Delivery mail.

If you find you are going tobe a late mailer, use AIRMAILto assure on-time delivery.

Help your Post Office byseparating greeting cards intolocal and out-of-town bundles.

TWO FISHERMENby ethel snyder

Granny Matthews, long-timeresident of Sanibel and founderof Island Inn, told me thisfish story, which she said wastrue and I believe her.

Two of the old time home-steaders went tarpon fishingin the Pass on.Captiva. Eachman was in his own boat. Thereare many winding inlets, bor-dered with mangrove tree rootswirh oysters clinging to themextended t?/o or three feet abovethe low tide line. They couldhear each other but not seethrough the mangrove - linedchannels.

Suddenly one man -let outa mighty yell for help! He keptroaring'"HELP! HELP!"

His friend rowed as fastas he could to rescue him froma dire-sounding fate. When herounded the last turn he sawhis friend up to his neck inwater, hanging onto the sternof his boat,

"Why would he do that?"tbe friend thought.

Then he saw a great tarponhad leaped into the boat andthe man had leaped out! Whenthe rescurer had sized up thesituation he shouted with laugh-ter. The man in the water didn'tsee anything funny. He finallywas dragged into the friend'sboat.

They were unable to getthe tarpon out of the otherboat and brought him home. They didn't tell the folks backhome how it was they caughtthe biggest catch of the seasonbut it was too good a fish storyto keep under cover for long!

TALK ABOUT WORK!Stopped in to pass the time

of day with Bill Newman atthe Chamber of Commercebooth- one time {not that hehad much passing to do, aspeople kept pouring in and thephone kept ringing) and hap-pened to pick up a Chamber ofCommerce publication f r o msomewhere in South Florida.(Where, we're not about to say.)

Anyhow, prominently on thefront page was an article statingthat their Chamber booth hadrecorded 206 drop-in visitorsthat month. Bill saw us readingit and laughed a little.

"You know," he said, "whenthat paper first came in here, one of the Chamber membersstopped by and said 'That's agood idea, Bill. Why don't wehave a monthly report on howmany people stopped by?' Well,I just said I' didn't have time.

"So, out of curiosity, hedecided tcr count up the num-ber of people who had stoppedby our Chamber Building inthe past Say. You know whatthe total was? 364!"

Whiefe left us breathless,if not wordless!

BETTY MURPHY of Cap-tiva Island called the Islanderover the weekend, quite upsetover the recent disasterousflood in Florence, Italy, whichruined untold millions of arttreasures as well as takingpeople's lives, livlihoods andhomes. (She spent most of herchildhood there, which madethe news even worse for her.)

She said they need every-thing from cash to clothing, and if anyone wishes to help, checks may be sent to the wifeof the Italian Vice Consul inMiami, Mrs. J.M, DeGaetani,c/o Italian Vice Consulate, 1005Congress Building, Miami, Fla.Or if you have any clothing, etc*, bring them to Betty, whowill forward them.
