BD AutoShield Duo Safety Pen Needle Reduce the risk of intramuscular injection (IMI) to optimise treatment outcomes1,6Your safety is important. When it comes to the risk of

needlestick injuries (NSI), did you know that:

Why a 5mm pen needle is preferred• Short 5mm pen needles are recommended by the Australian Diabetes

Educators Association (ADEA).7

• A 5mm pen needle reduces the risk of IMI, is more comfortable, and provides equivalent glycaemic control compared to longer needles.1,6

• The BD AutoShield Duo 5mm Safety Pen Needle is suitable for adults, children and obese patients.1

of sharps injuries in

hospital are caused by

needles453%

of NSI are caused by

insulin pen needles in

care settings5>40%

of NSI happen during

routine use or when

replacing the needle cap5 >80%

1 in 10 nurses reported being injured by the cartridge end of the needle.3

1 in 10

1 in 9 healthcare professionals sustain a NSI every year.2*

Accidental IMI may result in:

• Hypoglycaemia

• Pain

• Bruising

• Bleeding

The use of long needles, combined with incorrect injection technique increase the risk on IMI.6,7

12.7mm = 45% risk of IMI

8mm = 15.3% risk of IMI

6mm = 5.7% risk of IMI

On the patient end, a red indicator band confirms the safety mechanism has been activated.

On the cartridge end, protection is confirmed when the orange shield covers the needle upon

removal from the pen.

Insulin should be injected into subcutaneous tissue for consistent absorption.
