Sant Kirpal Singh did not com e for a s mall circle, He came for the whole c reation.Sometimes He said: You s hould try to understand what the purpos e of mycoming is. In each Yuga there is always a decision taken within which Powerhas to come into the physical world.This time I was selected, so I am with you. But you should have respect for myNaam, b eca use I am (that p ower) res iding in you. Then He to ld, I came a cco rdingto the wish of the inner ass embly (of Saints), I came into the dry land, the physicalworld, but I will give the water to make it green. Sant Kirpal Singh was thecompe tent Power. At the place whe re He had to take birth peop le could hear His(inner) voice already beforehand. His mother used to tell to her husband, I canalways hear a voice inside me, I can even feel and listen this voice in the house

and in the city wherever I go. So the Masterpower even gave this voice beforeHe came to her house. S.K.

Sant Kirpal Singh was born in the spring season, on February 6, 1894. He wascoloured in His (Gods) colour and this co lour He ga ve to a ll. The whole hous ewas full of light then. People of the village came and touched the child as they

could feel He is the great One and even on the ir hands they could feel some thingwhen they touched Him. He was such a s ilent child, so quiet, that sometimesHis mother wanted to see if He was still there.

When He came into this world it was His message, that We should respect allreligions and all religions are bles se d, but m y conce rn is with the atma sha ktithe power of the soul. When He started to give out the teaching in the world,He (first) told His father, All religions belong to me and I belong to all religions.When He cam e forward with His highest knowledge, then everywhere there waspea ce in all outer religions.

He started to give the message to all: Come above everything. Have such areligion, come in such a condition, where all souls can get together in the end.He had heard the crying and longing of the souls and then He came into this

People regarded Sant Kirpal Singhas a little s aint right from His early age.He used to s peak som e holy words,to give some instructions, and Heguided all on the level of spirituality.Many were b enefited e ven when Hewas a child, beca use His soul wasdeveloped. In reality such Saints aresent, they are not d eveloped in theworld, and their purpos e is only tocome and de velop others. H.S.

There were signs that He was a bornsaint. When He was seven, eight years

old, He was reading at school. Oneday He asked the teacher, Please,give me leave, I want to go home, mygrandmother is leaving the body.The teacher said, What a saint areyou, sit down and a ttend to your study!Soon afterwards one pers on camefrom His home. He said, Kirpal iswanted at home, His grandmother isgoing to die. He was a consciousentity. He knew eac h and everything.H.S.

Sant Kirpal Singh was a very obedientchild. But on two occasions He gently

yet resolutely as serted His indepen-dence. He was in the habit of helpingall He knew, regardless of their relationswith His family. So once His fathercalled Him and said, Pal (His petname), our friends will be your friendsand our foes will be your foes. ButPal replied with coo l delibera tion,Father, your friends will be my friends,but it is not neces sary that your foesbe my foes, a s your enmities mayhave been based on misunderstan-dings. Life is to o s hort and I have notcome to have enmities a nd hatreds.I have come to love all. B.M.

His family was non-vegetarian. But Hewas averse to taking meat even as achild. While His brothe rs a nd s isterswould ask for more, He would havenone at a ll. He was c ontent with breadand vegetab les. His father asked,Pal, why dont you take m eat? It willdo good to you. He sweetly replied,It is very well, father, but is not meatdead flesh, a nd would you have memake a burial ground of my body?The father could only smile an d thechild ha d His own way. B.M.

When He was a s ked abou t thepurpose o f His lea rn ing He s a id :"I am learning at s choo l for (the s akeof) knowledge." Othe rs s aid, "Wewill become a doctor, a judge, oran e ngineer, but Sant Kirpal Singhsaid, He was learning for the sake ofknowledge. And He became theteac her of humanity. H.S.

From His early life Sant Kirpal Singhwas a lover of books. Once He startedreading a book He would not leave it,until it was finished. Very often He would

continue read ing the whole night andwould only sleep a s hort time. Therewas no electric lighting in His home .So He had to read by the light of anoil lamp. Fearing that too much s tudywould tell upon His he alth, His fatherordered that Pal should go to be d byten in the night. But His love for bookscould not be o vercome. It was winter.He would no doubt get into the be dat te n but while everyone tho ught Himasleep, He was reading His b ooksunde r the c over of His quilt. He readall the books of a c ollege library duringthe two years of His studies there. B.M.

His studies were not confined to Histexts alone. He invariably stoo d firstin His class. One day the boy whoused to s tand se cond in the class didnot do his work. The head mas terexpected all the students to comeprepared in advance for the daysless on b y noting all the d ifficult wordsand their meanings after consultingthe dictionary. The hea dma ste r gotannoyed with the b oy and too k himto tas k. The bo y complained that itwas just his first d efault, but Kirpal

Singh had never followed his instruc-tions. The head mas ter told him thatKirpal had no such nee d as He kneweverything in His texts a nd m uch mo rebesides. B.M.

Sant Kirpal Singh often used to say,I was also a child like you, s tudyingin the s chool. But He could help Hisfamily, His friend s (all thos e) who we reweak in the study. S.K.

San t Kirpal Singh Himself told a boutone book which impressed Him verymuch: I was very fond of readingbiographies, even as a student I think I read more tha n three hu ndredlives of s aints, Eas t and Wes t. Thefirst book that came into my handswhile I was reading in the se venthclass was a life of a saint (called)Ramanuj.

What did I read there? It was writtenthat he went to a Maste r, who gavehim initiation. Then Ramanuj c ame

around, stood on a mound, and calledall the people around him. Peopleasked, What are you going to do? Ive got something Im going togive to you. Oh, you are disobe yingthe orders of your Master. Withoutthe permission of his Master he shouldnot have done it. Never mind. I willgo to hell youll be saved! Ill sufferhell, for your sa ke. Youll be s aved ,after all. I dont mind. At that time itcam e to my mind, that if I get thisthing, Ill give it o ut like anyth ing. Butfortunately, Ive given it out at theorder o f my Maste r, not without it!

WhenSan t Kirpal Singh was e levenyears old His mother took him to onepan dit (for introduction into the c as t).There they take one thread with she llsand then the Brahman is praying.The Pandit told Him, child, today youenter the cast of Kshatriyas and thisthread will help you in this world andinside. The e leven years old boy too kthe hand of this priest, and said, tellme, whe n this bo dy will be burnt, th isthread will also burn, how it will helpme inside. Tell me which g enuine

thread should be put o n? Why not togive a thread which can help insideand outside, you should give the threadof His knowledge . We s hould take thethread made of the cotton of content-ment. Why do you not take the threadof contentment?

Then there was a knot in the threadand Sant Kirpal Singh told, With thetruth in you ma ke the knot. This genuinethread will help you inside and outs ide.That time this P and it (they are alsoastrologers) told, Mother, one dayyour son will be a competent One.

He was such a comp etent Master,who ha d the (inner) knowledg e fromchildhoo d on. His playground wasSahaj gyan, the equipoise sta te. S.K.

Sant Kirpal Singh loved His mother verymuch, they had a very close relation.When Sant Kirpal Singhs mother wascooking the food, s he always had onepot of water, and when s he madesome dough, she often washed herhands and she told to this cooking spoon:

"You will be m y witnes s , you will tellinside that I did not use dirty hands"-she told abou t her purity (of her pureway of life); how pure she was whenshe was cooking the food, in this wayshe prepared the food for the children.When her children were small, sheused to tell them, "Before you takefood, close your eyes and remembe rGod, when you will do His Bhakti Hewill put so me coins into your plate."And when they closed their eyes s healways put so me mone y into theirplate. They really started to think,God gives money when we meditate.So they started to do it sincerely.

When they got strong she s topped togive them money. They asked, "Mother,now God doe s not give mone y any-more?" and she replied, "No, now Hewill give you s ometh ing from inside,when you will go within."

Then it was Sant Kirpal Singh a t firstwho go t the sunlight within. He toldHis m other, "I sa w the s un and in thesun there was a be autiful lady lookinglike our mother and she was spinning.She replied: yes I am s pinning andI will prepare the cloth so t hat whenyou will go inside you will have a nicedress and by wearing this d ress youwill mee t God . So go furthe r! Allbrothers then had the wish, the year-ning to get so mething from within- Prem Singh, Jodh Singh and Sa ntKirpal Singh. Thereafter P rem S ingh,the eldest, co uld s ee the star within.And then they promised each other,if one of us will meet the Godp ower(the comp etent Maste r), he will tell itthe other one. Sant Kirpal Singh told,with this d iseas e (longing) we wentin the search for God. S.K.

Sant Kirpal Singh respe cted His fathervery much and could also he lp him indifferent wa ys.When His father was sick, He helpedand s erved him a lot, but when some-thing was wrong, He could always tell,Fathe r this is not right. A time cam e,when His father, who was a devoteeof Vishnu, us ed to take bath in a coldpond (for to me ditate). And the n Sa ntKirpal Singh also s tarted to d o s o.

But when He took bath in this pond,Baba Sawan Singh appeared to Him

and told, You sho uld take ba th insideas the S arovar is within you, otherwisethere will be a b ig mounta in, and it willtake much time to remove it afterwards.So S ant Kirpal Singh came to know,that in His father, there was alread y thismountain.

He was in seventh class a nd got innerknowledge, and then He was guidingHis parents . He told, Father, now youshould not take the bath there any-more, we have one inner Sarovar, thereI will take bath with you, and you withme.

Thereafter He he ard one voice frominside telling, O, masafar, O traveller,who is going ba ck, you should com eand tell me your inner cond ition.

Later on Sant Kirpal Singh cam e toone woman who lived nearby. She wasgiving Satsang and He was listeningto it and they both became one in theSatsang. This woman asked Him,Do you know about God?

He replied, I do not know (where He

is manifeste d) outwardly , but He iswithin me. Then she sa id, If you wantto see Him come near me. Sant KirpalSingh went near her, and she told,Kirpal, today I am leaving; I am goingto my True Hom e. Do you know whereit is?

When the so ul is leaving the bod y, it ismore awaken. Only the body is dea d.She was about to leave the body. Shetold her family and cleared everythingwith them .

San t Kirpal Singh could se e that inshort time, her hands and feet, herwhole body beca me co ld. He couldrealize, that so me times whe n Heclosed His e yes some Power wasthere, and when He opened them, itwas away. (He thought ) What is thePowe r (which was giving her life a ndis now no more in her)? And the n Hecould remember this voice, which Hehad heard be fore.

O, ma s afar, O traveller, who is goingback, you should come and te ll me

your inner c ondition.

Sant Kirpal Singh was with her till theend. He accompanied her dead bodyto the graveyard, there He co uld s ee,another dead body. It stroke His mind,This fate c an come to the young andold alike. Again this Po wer ap pea redto Him and to ld, The world is no t ourTrue Home, e verybody has to go.

So Sant Kirpal Singh realized, tha twhile in life we have to co me in conta ctwith the Master, we have to s olve thepurpos e o f our life, otherwise our life

goes in vain. At this time His fatherand the whole family started to ca llHim a Saint. S.K.

In 1911 Sant Kirpal Singh was marriedto Krishnawanti, however He livedalone for more years thereafter. In Hissc riptures He often told: Marriage isa s acrament, not a c ontract. For that,Masters a lways enjoin that we musthave good lives: we should berighteous ; that is, have good thoughts,good words and good dee ds.

All scriptures tell us that outer marriagemea ns ta king a c ompa nion in life forweal or woe on t his earthly sojournto help each other to know God, whichis the highest aim before us in themanb ody. One duty may be that ofbege tting c hildren, it is not hundredpercent of our duties. We need acom panion in life. Whoever God un ites,let God disunite. It is the unseen handof God working behind it, that b ringstwo s ouls togethe r. But marriage ismeant for a higher purpose of the unionof soul with God. All sc riptures andall religions tell us that.

serving othersAs an example for us, Sant KirpalSingh told how to ta ke a d ecision in life:After my educa tional career was overI had a mbition in life, too. I was a veryvoracious reader of books. I wantedbig libraries , this and that thing. ButI had to d ecide what to do pursuemy worldly ambition or place God first.

It took me more tha n a week or tendays to d ecide. In the evening afteroffice hours I used to go to somewildernes s area to decide. I wasdiscus sing for and a gainst with my

own se lf until sometimes one , som e-times two in the morning. I finallycame to the conclusion: God first andthe world next.

Se rving OthersSant Kirpal Singh em ployed His leisurein s erving others. He attended to theailing in hosp itals, helping them finan-cially, serving them in every possibleway even cleaning their utensils, ifneed be. In the year 1919, after thefirst World War, an e pide mic of

influenza, not unlike tha t of 1957, b utcertainly far more fatal, swep t throughthe country. It took so heavy a toll thatpeo ple were in mortal fear of cat chingthe infection and left even their kithand kin unattended.

But, disregarding the dang er to Him-se lf, Sa nt Kirpal Singh organized aSoc ial Service Corps and personallyattended victims s tricken by thedisease , mitigating as far as pos sibletheir sufferings in that hour of need .B.M

Similarly, at abo ut that time there b rokeout an epidemic of bubonic plague inthe Punjab and took such a heavy toll,day in and day out, that people fledfar and wide, leaving their dyingrelations in the throes of the dreadfulmalady.

Once aga in , He ra ised a ba nd o f se l f le s s vo lun tee rs and fea r le s s lyplunged into the s ervice of the s ickand the helples s in the hour of theirdire nee d, ad ministe ring them medi-cines and comforting them in theirdistress. B.M.

Once when Sant Kirpal Singh was yetin His twenties and eked out a ba reliving with the sweat of His brow, Hisailing uncle ca me to Him in Lahore.

He got him admitted into the hospitaland he lped him da y in and day outwith all sorts of medicines and food.One d ay, while He was helping Hisuncle with a c up o f milk, His eyes fellon an old and emaciated s keleton ofbones lying uncovered on a nearbybed . Sant Kirpal Singh went up tohim and asked him if he nee ded any-

thing. This brought te ars o f gratitudein the old ma ns eyes a nd he heaveda s igh of relief at finding s omeo ne inthe wide a nd drea ry world who wou ldask him about his nee ds.

From that d ay on, S ant Kirpal Singhbeg an looking after bo th His unc leand this old man a like in all their needs .The result was that He Himself had fordays on e nd to live on bare parchedgrams and plain water.

His uncle was a stonished and said,You a re d oing a ll You c an for m e

beca use I am Your uncle and as suchhave perhaps som e claim on You.But I see that this old man, a merebundle of bones, with no means toreward Your se rvices , receives thesa me kind treatme nt from You as I do.

San t Kirpal Singh m eekly replied,Respected uncle, you both are aliketo me. He has as much a right on meas You have. In fac t the en tire crea tionhas the sa me right on me. I am for thecreation and the creation is for me.We are o ne a nd not two. I am for all

and not for a ny individual. B.M.

Decision in Life

From time to time Sa nt Kirpal SinghHimself told a bout His profess ional life:I tell you my position in life, you see,my official career. I thought all wereequ als: one is sitting in the chair, inthe officers or on the officers table,the other is just peon, peon-like he isworking over the table. What differenceis there?God has equally endowed them withthe sam e things as you, as you areend owed. Simply the pos ition in lifecomes according to reaction of thepast karmas, unfortunate friends

working over there. If you trea t themjust as equal, they are after all men.

If you us e kind words tha t attractsthem m ore than e ven by giving yourorders; they will do, obe y at times, butat heart of hearts, you cannot, yousee , attract their hearts.

When I joined the (government) s ervicein 1911, I was put on a job overpersonal bills (accounts owed by thegovernment), small bills. One contractorcame up. He said, I have sent in mybill. Can you proces s it toda y? My

programme was suc h that whateverwas received today was cleared up ina da y or two. He said to m e, Wouldyou kindly hurry up? I sa id, I will se eto it. Thats my job. Then he p ut twotips (coins) under my inkstand. I aske d,What for? He s aid, So you ca n hurryit up. I told him, I am paid for that!

He took his m oney and did not react,and went away. And thos e s ilver coins

jingled in his pockets as he walked off.So when you are already paid for that,be honest to your own Self always.

If you are a lread y paid for this, whyshould anyone pay more?

I was in charge of coordination andadministration. Once some clerkswere declared unfit, and were returnedto me. They were recomme nded fordischarge; all such ca ses had to cometo me. So I made those p eople clerksin the section under me.I watche d what the y were doing.They had bad habits, running here,talking, not doing work. I watchedthem for a few days, then one da yI called the m toge ther.

Well, dear friends, you know you arepaid to d o your job while you are here,are you not? Yes . As you have b eenrecommended for discharge, who doyou sup pos e will be affecte d? Yourfamilies whom you have brought up.Is it not your duty to work hard for thatpurpose? Then they would comearound. In a fortnight or a month or so,they be gan to work, hones tly. Thenagain, when an established positionwas req uired by the other se ctionsunder me , Id post them the re. Wedont want this man; hes worthless.

No, no, I said, hes a c hange dman now. Give him a chance and s ee.

In 1921 I was posted in the AccountsBranch o f an Indian Army Regiment.An army orderly used to cook my food.I had given him strict instructions no tto allow anyone to enter the kitchen,and also told him to recite holy verseswhile prep aring the food. It was myprac tice to sit for med itation d aily inthe d ead of night. One night I noticednegative thoughts disturbing mymed itation. I woke the orderly up andasked him if there was anyone with

him in the kitche n that night. He saidno; but he wa s te lling a lie. Later headm itted it. Where the dirt is a lread ythere in tons, a little more doe snt makemuch d ifference. But even a grain ofdirt will be visible on an otherwiseclean surface.

I was once attached as an accountsofficer to the military service unit. Theregiment was ordered to proceed to afield of ac tion. In the regiment the rewas a d aco it; very dread ful, I tell you.

He liked me and sometimes followedme as my bodyguard. He sa id he wasafraid of me. I told him, Everybody isafraid of you and you say you areafraid of me? He sa id, When I lookat you, I start tremb ling; my pas t sinscom e to life. I as ked him, Why?What happ ened ? He said, I havetormented so many pe ople. Killedthem, like that. How many I killed, theexac t numbe r I dont rememb er. Isthere a ny hope for me? Yes , thereis hope for everybod y. There is ho peeven for the worst sinner. Repent!Pray! Do no m ore.

At this time San t Kirpal Singh had stillnot reached at the feet of His Master,but even then He had the compe tencyto help some one on the inner way.One time Sant Kirpal Singh wasworking in His office and then He co uldse e within that o ne ma n is waiting forHim, and He went to that pe rson.When He reached there He could hearthat all talked about this man, that hegot some disease that he is havingsome mental problem.

He was a c lerk of His office and while

all were s pea king with him ab out theoffice work, S ant Kirpal Singh told himabout the co mpetency of the Master-power. One time all sa id, that he go tsuch an attack that he could not breathso eas ily. San t Kirpal Singh told thatit was acc ording to his karma (hisbackground) he needs the c ontactof some one (who can help him, togo within and to get in conta ct withthe God-power) and when he wouldget this contact he would be all right.

Sant Kirpal Singh explained further,that he was withdrawing from the out-

going faculties but his soul could notfind the inner way. When Sant KirpalSingh told this ma n, Look at me,he looked into Sant Kirpal Singhseyes, where he could see a very stronglight. Then after s ome time he sta rtedto get better.Then he sat before Sant Kirpal Singhsoffice and told, You ha ve s ome thingin You an d You ga ve me one Granth(a Holy book full of knowledge) andwith this Granth I got hea lthy.Then Sant Kirpal Singh explained,There is o ne c onnection, one wire

from d isciple to Mas ter. And Hepromised, When I will meet Him, I willget in contact, I will bring you thereand if you get in contact beforehandyou shou ld tell me.

Shabad was already in Sant Kirpal Singh.And this ma n was pres sing Him, No,You Yourse lf have this power, bec aus eYou m ad e m e he althy, and I will notleave You an d not go ou t of this office,till You give me Naam , the S hab ad ,(Holy Names ) and then S ant KirpalSingh gave him Sat Naam (as Simran).

And with Sat Naam this man couldmed itate very calmly, he atta ined the(inner) bliss by it. Then he c ould s eeBaba S awan Singh and Sa nt KirpalSingh s itting to gethe r inside. After-wards he told, An old man was sittingwith You and he s ent me bac k intothis world, mentioning that a cco rdingto the time we will meet ea ch othe r.So this power (to help someonewithin) Sant Kirpal Singh had evenbefore He came in contact with BabaSawan S ingh outside. Time of Search

San t Kirpal Singh knew there is oneBeloved, who is controlling everything.Then Sant Kirpal Singh started tosearch Him in this world. And Healways used to give the ad vice,If you want to understand somethingmore, you should go to a dying person.

When the end-time of his father came,outwardly Sant Kirpal Singh was stillnot in contact with Baba Sawan Singh.

Then He was fully bus y to s erve Hisfather. As He kne w, that he was goingto leave the bod y, He was fullycommitted to serve him. He alsowanted to ca re for his s oul. He Himselfhad not g ot the contac t with the Master-power, but He had the Power inside.And e veryday in the morning He tookbath, tied a kind of scarf around Hiswaist, and then He only served Hisfather. His father was disorientated,he forgot everything, but Sant KirpalSingh reminded him of everything.

It was S ant Kirpal Singhs inner prayer,He is my father, he has given me thebirth and he s hould be helped to reachhis Eternal Home.

GOVERNMENT SERVICE

Sant Kirpal Singh was not yet initiated,(He had no contact with the physicalGuru), bu t His p raye r was hea rdinside (and further time was grantedfor His fathers sp iritual development)- Your father will not be taken bac know. Sant Kirpal Singh loveab lyexplained to His father, This is a s poon,this is a glass a nd s o on. In this wa yHe could bring him to a more c ons ciouscond ition. And when His father hadbec ome normal again, Sant Kirpal Singhtold him, You s hould pray to ge t theblessing of Naam.

His father could recover and evensta rted to walk. He was so ha ppy withhis child that he told, O, child, whatis your wish, you should also demandso mething from me. Sa nt Kirpal Singhreplied, My only wish is to atta incommunion with God

His father was just walking from oneside to an other, but then pause d fora while p ondering over it and told,Kirpal, I can not s ee God, but youshould tell me your inner condition.Then S ant Kirpa l Singh rep lied , You

know that I have no any attac hmentwith property, or anything else, I haveonly one wish to mee t God Hisfather sa id, I pas se d my whole lifewithout getting any contact with theMaste r-power, but my child, who isborn in this hous e, s urely will get thecontact with the Master.Baba Sa wan Singh could hear the

inner prayer of Sant Kirpal Singhsfather, so He appeared to Him andsaid, This is not your house now, it ismy hous e. And the n Sa nt Kirpal Singhasked Baba Sa wan Singh, where

you are living (in this physical world)?Then he ans wered, Hansa s o nly livenear the Sarovar.Which Sarovar? This Sarovar withinus, from which we are never sep aratednot even for a s eco nd. From this timeon Baba Sawan Singh and Guru NanakDev Ji were always around Sant KirpalSingh, He could witness the prese nceof these p owers.Who has the awakening from thechildhood, ca n also awake others .

Everything happens according to theright time. Means it is only in His hand,when it is the time to meet God.He sees our inner condition and accor-dingly the dec ision is ma de. There wasalso a great longing in Baba SawanSingh to find His d isciple. It is no t thedisciple who finds the Father, it is theFather who finds the child. When thesoul has that longing, He surely meetsthe s oul. S.K.

Sant Kirpal Singh de sc ribed in Hisown words how He met His Master:Naturally, when I looked all around,

there were so many Masters.

To whom should I go? We were threebrothers. Two of us he lped ea ch other,If you find any Godman, tell me; ifI find one, I will tell you. We weresea rching, you see. So ma ny menwere having meetings of this kind.

Once it so happened that my brotherwrote to me , Heres a very great m an;a very great Mas ter has come . Will youcome? I went there. I told him, I haveintoxication that continues day and

night; but sometimes, after three, fouror five months , it breaks for a day ortwo. And I am very much puzzled.

Can you he lp me in that? What didhe s ay? Youll have to lay down e very-thing your body, mind a nd s oul tome. Only then I can, I will give it to you. I thought, The ma n is after my bod yand po ss ess ions; my intellect andeverything is to b e b lindfolded . I pa idhim homage and returned.

Well, you see surrender comes onlywhen you see some competence.

Devotion and love one who loves ,is so mething else. When you surrender,you have control of the one to whomyou surrender: he has to take care ofyou. So many came and pa ss ed by.

So it went on like tha t. I use d to p ray,Oh God, Im co nvinced that withoutone who knows You, nobo dy canreach You. It is a pract ical matter ofself-analysis.

God cannot b e known by the outgoingfaculties , by the vital airs or by theintellect. It is a ma tter of s eeing:

whoever sees can ma ke you see.

I know theres a need definitely:all scriptures say so. Im quite con-vinced, but where am I to go?Suppos e I go to someb ody who hasnot m et You wha t will be m y fate?

I used to p ray like th at. If You c ouldrevea l Yours elf to the old Sa ints

sometimes there are s tories like that why cant You d o it in my ca se ?I am convinced, Ive great regard forthat need; but there are so manyMasters whom shall I select?

With this, my Master (Baba SawanSingh) began to appe ar to me whenI sat in meditation or when I was doingsomething. I thought perhaps it wasGuru Nanak.

He used to talk to me. In those daysthere was the First Great War, and mybrother was on the Indian front along

the Persian side. I used to traversealong with Him and went to thos eplaces, here, there a nd everywhere.

I was very fond of rivers, ponds, water.Even in my young life, I used to goand s it by the wa terside or s ome river,the whole night through, in a calm andquiet place. The running water helpsa little to concentrate. So this went onfor som e time.

In the mean t ime , I was f i rs t a tPeshawar, and then I was transferred

to Nowshera station: a river runs bythere. I used to s it by that riverside forhours. Then I came to J helum side.That is also b y the riverside, an dI sa t there for hours on e nd. I wasvery fond of swimming, too.(Just enter the river: if youre not afraid,nothing will happen; its only fear thatkills you. If you s imply shake your foota little or move your hands a little, youwont drown.)

In the meantime I was transferred toLahore: that was also by the riverside.I passe d my days there. There wasalso the river Beas, Let me have alook at that! One S unda y morningI left by train and detrained at Beasstation.

There was an old man there; he wasthe station master. I asked him whichside th e river flows. He wa s (Bua Das)a devotee of the Master, Do youwant to s ee the Master? Does aMas ter live here ? Yes !

Where? On the riverside.I told him, I have two things now.Ill enjoy the river scenery and also seethe Maste r at the sa me time. Thenhe directed me there. Master wassitting ups tairs; He was taking Hismeal inside. I went out and sat outside.

After half an hou r or so, He ca me o ut.I was wonder-struck: He was the sa meman who had been ap pearing to mefor seven years before, from 1917 to1924. I paid homa ge t o Him, Why solate? He said, That was the most

opportune time that you are to com e.So this is ho w I met th e Mast er.

When San t Kirpal Singh came for thefirst time to the Dera in 1924, HazurBaba S awan Singh Ji told, Pleas e s iton m y chair. Now you ha ve to work inthe Dera. And Hazur ga ve Him muc hwork, which He used to do along withHis official work.

When Sant Kirpal Singh requestedHazur for initiation Hazur t old, Kirpa l,you are already initiated from within.

He as ked Hazur, How much timeshould I devote for my daily meditation?Hazur told Him, Six hours minimum,the more you can sit, the better it is.S.K.

Sant Kirpal Singh was the first one inHis village to b e initiated and not a lldid agree with the teachings. HeHimself tells about it: I was the firstone in my village to b e initiated , andit started some trouble. I was calledto the temple there and tried to explainthe m, finally saying, All right, the reis a difference ; why not take a fewmen, s ay four or five, and we will goand talk together heart to heart youmay choose the mos t learned men.

A numbe r of peop le took a vow to killme as a result; they fixed a meetingplace, choos ing the time a t ten oclockat night, with the purpose of killing meas I walked through th e village to th eappointed place. But when the hourcame and I walked to the meetingplace, they did mee t me on the waybut had no courage to attack me.Some month after this incident, theringleade r of this p lot came to Lahoreand I met him one d ay in the s treet.I at onc e invited him to my home,telling him, Come, d ear friend, haveyour food with me toda y. When wereached my house, he sat down and

cried. Naturally, I aske d him wha t waswrong, and he rep lied, You kne w Iwas the one who led that plot to killyou, and yet you have welcomed meto your home. He was quite overcome.

Sant Kirpal Singh did not only fulfil Hisspiritual duties assigned to Him byBaba S awan Singh, but a lso Hismundane duties, He worked in theoffice and cared for His family.He was able to work with attention anddid everything in a very perfect way.Sant Kirpal Singh had to do a lot inHis office, b ut while working very ha rdthere, He c ould bring His attent ion inthe Mission and se e if His Mas ter isin any problem. Putting His atte ntionthere was no obstacle in His work.He only used to bring His attentionand see if there is any problem in theMission. And if there was any problemHe use d to finish it.

After completing His work, He wouldgo d irectly to that place and finishwith the problem. And whene ver Hewent to Baba Sa wan Singh, He said,Kirpal Singh, how is it?

He answe red, Master it is fully all right.So He would never keep His Masterin any problem. He was s uch a perfectdisciple of a great Master. It was sucha good relation which continued.So Baba Sa wan Singh used to b e veryhappy be caus e His disciple wouldavoid all the p roblems in the Miss ion.So c redit goes to whom? To the Fatherand the S on as well. It was their jointwork in reality. H.S.

When some highly qualified literatepersons came to Baba Sawan SinghHe us ed to s ay, Okay, if you want tolisten with one word, you come to me,if you want to liste n with lots of words ,you go to Sant Kirpal Singh.So both Father and Son they couldsa tisfy everybod y. Sa nt Kirpal Singhsa id, If you kee p my words , you keepthe wo rd of my Master. And Bab aSawa n Singh said, If you have unde r-stood me , you have understood SantKirpal Singh. There is no differencebetween me and Him.

So right from the beginning they kneweac h other, they were very loveab le.H.S.

A time ca me when Baba S awan Singhdid not want to be without Sant KirpalSingh for longer time. Sant Kirpal Singhhimself is d es cribing this s ituation:When I was in service, I use d to visitHim (Baba Sa wan Singh) twice a week.Any time I did not t urn up for a we ekor so, He would ask everyone, Whereis he? Then He would take the carand come to my office about fortymiles away. You s ee?

This is love hea rt to hea rt. It develops

in that wa y. That requires no show.Such o ne is ca lled a Gurmukh.

THE GIFT OF GOD

His Mas ter orde red Sa nt Kirpal Singhto give talks at Sats ang places,attend the poor, the sick, the needy,everyone. Even when He left theoffice, He use d to attend the sickuntil eight, nine or t en o clock in thenight. One time Sant Kirpal SinghHims elf narrate d one incidence,how a dying person could be helped:

Kabir Sahib says, He who lives inconsta nt remembrance of his Masterand keep s his Master's words, will befearless in all three worlds. Whysho uld he be afraid of anything? Afterall, his Maste r is no t merely a man.Understand this also: it often happ ensthat the d isciple is due for heavysuffering, due to the ka rmic reactionsfrom the p ast, b ut through the Guru'sprotection it can be reduced to perhapsa s light prick from a thorn.

All the ups and downs of life are likepassing phases, and should have nopinching effect on the disciple. Theworldly life is full of pe rplexities, a ndexistence here is impossible withoutthem. My Maste r used to sa y that if

one thinks one can remove all thethorns from the worldly life, w ell, it isan impo ss ibility; however, if one we arsstrong boots, one will not feel them.To wear s trong boot s me ans to livewithin the protection of the Master'sradiation - no t phys ically, but throughthought and attention - be so muchin His radiation, and never step out ofit. Nothing should change this.One can b e so much within the Guru'sradiation that e ven the powerful Lordof Dea th ca nno t come nea r . Forexample, I will tell you of one incidentwhen I was living in Lahore . There wa sa lady who hailed from my village , butshe was not a disciple. She becameseriously ill, and her family enduredconstant sleepless nights in lookingafter her. I heard that she was sick,and went to se e her, accomp anied byDalip Singh (later trea surer in Sa wanAshram ). I told them, You ha ve s pentso ma ny nights awake, and mus t betired, so you all sleep tonight and I willwatch beside the bed. Dalip Singhand I sat together for some time.

She was not initiated, but that did notmatte r, and I asked her, Do you repe atany holy name? She affirmed that shedid. I told Dalip Singh to go an d res t,and return about 4 a .m. and I continuedto sit bes ide the dying woman. Shewent on repeating the holy names , asI had sugge sted, but sud denly shesa id to me, There is an o ld man here.I looked up and saw the old man, andhe explained to me that she was hisgranddaughter, and that he had cometo take her away, but I told him thathe could not do so as long as I wassitting there. He tried his best to takethe soul out of the body, but did notsucceed, s o after some momentshe went away. I asked the woman ifshe had recognized the old man andshe sa id, Yes , it was m y grandfather;he was a very pious ma n.

After som e time, Yama , the Angel ofDeath, appeared in the doorway.I looked straight at him, and he ranaway - he could not even enter theroom. He returned several times, butcould not ente r. Then Dharam Raj, theLord of Death himself, appeared, but

he also c ould not c ome into the room.

He said, This soul belongs to me.I said, Yes , that is true, for sh e ha snot been initiated, and I know also thatyou cannot come near her becauseI am sitting here, so you had better goto my Guru and as k him what is to b edone now. If he gives you permiss ionto ta ke this s oul, then I will leave.

My friends, just see - how great is theNaam! Dharam Raj left, and in a m atterof moments returned and said, I havegot the pe rmiss ion to take the soul.I said, All right, take it. He replied,How c an I when you are s till sittingthere? Whate ver is written reg ardingthe prote ction power of the Holy Naamis all true, for I am telling you whatactually happened. Dharam Raj said,Unless you leave, I cannot ta ke thissoul. I asked him, What benefit willshe get from my s pending the wholenight bes ide her? He sa id, She willreceive the fruit of that be fore anyother rewards or debts a re accounted.

Just then, Dalip Singh entered theroom, and I said to him, Come brother,let us go away from this room, for whileI am here s he cannot d ie.As we were leaving, I as ked he rhusb and to g ive away in her namesome money which was still due fromher, to some needy peop le - that hergive and take may be sq uared up andshe may leave the b ody. Dalip Singhand I steppe d out of the room, and inone moment she was gone. Dalip Singhis here, you can ask him about it.

Another t ime, when S ant Kirpal Singhwas on duty, He got the mess age that

His sister was seriously sick. SantKirpal Singh was in remembrance ofBaba Sawa n Singh while working andsa id, Hazur, so m uch time I still haveto work, then I will get free, and cango to m y sister, at leas t this much timeshould be granted to her.Sant Kirpal Singh wa s working in hisoffice, and Baba Sawan Singh mani-fested there (in word form to Kirpalssister). First Baba Sawan Singhappea red to His s ister and then (shesaw Him along) with Sant Kirpal Singh.Baba S awan Singh as ked her, whichmedicine s he would take.

Having this experience Kirpals sisterfelt relieved. S he to ld everyone thatKirpal had co me a long with som eoneelse. She c ould not recognize BabaSawan S ingh.Her family memb ers sa id, No, s till Hehas not com e, but she insisted thatHe had c ome a nd talked to her. WhenSant Kirpal Singh finally came, shetold, But You a lread y reache d twohours before and one old man ca mealong with You. And Sa nt Kirpa l Singhasked , Would you be a ble to recognize

this old man?, and s he sa id yes.Then Sant Kirpal Singh ass ured he r,So nothing will happe n to you , youwill be saved. He had much love withHis s ister. Then His siste r could behealthy, He s aved her. S.K.

One time S ant Kirpal Singh sa w in hisoffice that his brothers time had cometo go back. Then He sent a mess ageto His brother that, You take leave a ndreach at home a nd I am also c ominghome. He a sked His brother, What isyour wish a nd ab out which s ubject doyou want to hear more and what is your

inner wish?

So a ll the rema ining time He wa ssp eaking in this direction. He told Hisbrother, O brother, if one knows thathe has to go within and what he hasto do within, there will be no anyproblem b efore the traveller. SantKirpal Singh promise d to His brotherthat they would spend his last timetogether.It was the promise among the b rothers.One time even His brother reques tedBaba Sawan Singh, When we leaveour body, our younger brother shouldbe with us. Then for Sant KirpalSinghs brother the time cam e to goback. He asked if he would need more

holidays to be together.

Sant Kirpal Singh told, No, you dontneed more holidays By this His brothercould come to know that within thesedays he would have to leave the b ody.Then San t Kirpal Singh leave wa s over,so He ha d aga in to go to His job ag ain,but He told His brother, Come to meto Lahore, but d ont travel at night, onlyat da y time. But he could not go by car,so he went b y train (and he was late).In the way he got som e problem andtold, O Kirpal, remember what promiseYou ha ve given and ho w is mycond ition no w! And what Sant KirpalSingh was doing on the other side?He was praying to His Master SawanProlong the time of my b rother, till hereaches to me!And His brother could see how SantKirpal Singh was sta nding beforeBaba Sa wan Singh and getting moretime for him. And Joth Singhs, Hisbrothers c ondition s tarted to g et be tter,and when he reached the s tation,Sant Kirpal Singh at the same timecame by car there. They embracedeach o ther and His brother told that

he had been feeling that Sant KirpalSingh had given the promise and itwould not be fulfilled, but everythingwas is fulfilled now. And a t the s ametime when they met and Sant KirpalSingh brought him in the ca r, he left hisbody. Sant Kirpal Singh b rought himto His house in Lahore, He to ld, It is sosorry to say, that the owner of thishouse has gone already.This is the c ompe tency of the Onewho can see the condition of the threeworlds . And He ca n se e the c onditionof that one whom He loves, He can

see even, what is a hindrance in theway. S.K.

It is s aid that it was a bea utiful timewhen Sant Kirpal Singh came to theHoly Feet of His Mas ter; it then sta rteda special type of vibration, a specialradiation e verywhere. So there are lotsof things that really nobody knows ,becaus e that ma tters only to theMaster and His disciple. And therewas only one, Sant Kirpal Singh whocould tell about His Mas ter. Whateveris in the he art of the disc iple or whatis in the hea rt of the Mas ter, only theyknow, nobody knows outside.

There may have been o ne in thousandwho was attuned to Him and He hadto direct Him. So Baba Sawan Singhused to wait for Sant Kirpal Singh andalways s aid, Go on s inging one moresong, go on s inging one more s habad.

So He used to d elay the Sats ang offand o n. Whenever San t Kirpal Singhhad gone to hold Satsa ng or He wassent for some o ther work and was alittle bit late, the Satsang was also alittle bit late. Not really late, but onlyshabads were sung. Master SawanSingh always wanted the presence of

Sant Kirpal Singh. As s oon a s KirpalSingh arrived, Master Sawan Singhused to start with the Sats ang. Andwhat was the condition of our Master?

Kirpal Singh said, while seeing Hazursturban from far away, He felt unableto come nea rer, and so He us ed to s itbehind a ll. He even felt no po wer inHis body to go forward. He was sointoxicated and His whole body wasso full of vibration tha t He ma de noendeavour to sp eak to anybody. Heonly said, Lets sit do wn. Somepeople tried to sit with Him becausethey knew tha t by s itting along withSant Kirpal Singh one could ge tsomething. And lots of experienceshappened to those who used to sitwith Him. H.S.

Baba Sawa n S ingh had one rea ldisciple Kirpal Singh, who d id eac hand everything for His Maste r. Theyknew each other, but lots of peoplecould not know. There were some,however, and th ey were also rece ptivedue to the very near link they had withSant Kirpal Singh:

At His Holy Feet

San t Kirpal Singh was g iven the dutyfor Sats ang in Rawalpindi. It was Hishometown, but He was in se rvice a tanother place. At that time He usedto live in Lahore. From the re He us edto visit Rawalpindi for Sats ang.

He used to go by tra in and thosedisc iples living in Rawalpindi, theyalways came to receive Sant KirpalSingh at the railway sta tion. And whe nthere was Satsa ng, they used to feela vibration of the Maste r.

Sometimes there was so much charging(of the atmosp here) that som e pe opleused to weep in the sweet remembranceof the Master, or they used to have thevibration of the Mas ter. So later on,when He was to go ba ck, lots of peo pleuse d to g o to s ee Him off at the railwaystation.

In this situation Rajaram, a d isciple ofHazur went directly to Baba SawanSingh and complained about thewhole situation that Sant Kirpal Singhwas getting very popular in the eyesof the disciples and that peo ple loved

Him too much, so that the respec twhich o nly Master d ese rved, nowthose disciples started to provide toSan t Kirpal Singh as well. He did notthink this to be a good thing. BabaSawa n Singh sm iled a nd s aid, It isno Sats ang where people do not feelthe vibration of the Maste r. Do youthink then, when S atsa ng is held, I amnot there? He said, I am alwaysthere! What He doe s I know.I love this pe rsonality too muc h, muchmore tha n you do . Afterwards thisRajaram use d to be very near to SantKirpal Singh. A time came during hislife that ou t of love an d de votion whichhe got through the nearness of SantKirpal Singh, he went d irectly to Bab aSawan Singh and sa id, Babaji, I wantto te ll you so mething. I have love andde votion for You, You a re very high tome, You a re God for me . But I do notknow, after You, I have rece ptivity andlove a nd d evotion for Sant KirpalSingh.

One day Baba Sawan Singh asked,Kirpal Singh, do you need parshad?He said, Yes Mas ter, I nee d it! It wasa parshad of apples. So Baba SawanSingh started to give ap ples from a bigbas ket, and Sant Kirpal Singh receivedthem, holding His s hirt.Both were a bove body-consciousness,and s ome apples were falling down.Taiji said, Hazur, can I also have onethat is falling down? Hazur s aid,If the s parrows take a little bit of waterfrom the ocea n, the ocea n will not finish,you can have as much as you like.

The whole Sanga t knew that there wasone disciple of Baba Sawan S inghwhom He loved very much, they kneweac h othe r. Kirpal Singh knew whatBaba Sawan Singh desired from Him.So th roughout His life Sant KirpalSingh worked with the attention ofBaba S awan Singh. It was a few timesthat He go t a ph ysical order, He onlyworked with attention. This a ttentionis there when the heart become s one.Only by see ing, you can understandwhat your Master d emands from you.H.S.

Sant Kirpal Singh wrote a b eautifulbook, the Gurmat Sidhant, and in s piteof His own Master stressing upon it,He did not agree to put His name there.He said, My pen is the sinner of writingit, but it was only writte n with Yourinstruction, without Your g uidance itcould have never been written. So itis Your Grace it s hould be produced ,it sho uld be pres ented with Your name.Because the purpose of the discipleis to show his Master to the world andnot himself. Baba Sawan Singh agreed.This was the hu mility of our Mas ter.

In the footnotes of the second editionof the Gurmat S idhant it was writtenthat a third edition will a lso bepublished.

San t Kirpal Singh wrote the t hirdedition, but He kept it under lockage.He did not give it for printing.Only a month before His physicaldeparture He gave us this book toprint it. And th is He did with all humility.As it appe ared on the footnotes of theGurmat S idhant, Pa rt II: That b ookwill be printed.

The Ocean of Life

He kept a conscious watch on the ego.Though He could say that the creditgoes to His Master but peo ple tookHim as Maste r.So the book was published after Hisphysical departure. Now it has b eenduly printed, but we have to s ee howhumble Master was . H.S.

Sant Kirpal Singh used to write manybea utiful poem s in love with BabaSawa n Singh. Whatever He saw,whatever He witnessed He wrote inthe form of poem s. Taiji used to singthe poems and Baba Sawan S ingh

would like to he ar them . One timeafter taking ba th, Baba S awan S inghwas cleaning His mouth with towels,and Sant Kirpal Singh at onc e felt,At leas t I sta y with Mas ter, but s tillI must stay at a little distance. Butthese towels are very fortunate, asthey are very close to Masters body.

So thes e towels are more fortunatethan m e. How be autiful, if Mas termade me also a towel for His face!He went back and wrote a beautifulpoem in praise of the Master and in

praise of the towels.

It happ ened that Sa nt Kirpal Singhwent to Amritsa r, and Hazur BabaSawan S ingh was expected to arrivethere. All were sitting, waiting for Hisarrival when the mes sage came thatthe Master was not com ing. Somepeople dispersed, but Kirpal Singhremained there. He wrote this poem,Whom I love will come, goingaround in madness . After about onehour, Hazur came there.

When on a tour this po em was s ung,Sant Kirpal Singh remarked, Love isa very strong p ower. Like a g lass thatdoes not show your face unless youput s ome thing behind it, similarly thelove coating at the back reflects theMaste r within the God within you.H.S.

Master Sawan Singh wanted to s howHis due love for Master Kirpal Singhand one d ay He s aid, Well, I want togo somewhere and those personswho want to come along with me, theyshould come.They all went with Him, and who werethose p eople? Those who wanted theMasters hip from Him, who wante deach and everything from Him. Theywanted to overrule all those things,which Mas ter (Sawan S ingh) neverliked. So they had created their ownsphere there.

They were very happy to come alongwith Baba Sawa n Singh. While on theway, Maste r Sawan Singh sa id,Thereis so m uch fragrance , it is intoxicatingme. It is coming from that side, do youalso feel it? They sa id, No Mas ter,we do not feel it at all.Soon afterwards Master again asked,I think it is so strong, you must feelit a little bit. They a ns wered , NoMaster, there is no fragrance, and weare not feeling such a n intoxication.We a re only feeling Your pres ence , thatis a blessing for us. Baba Sawan

Singh went on, and ultimately theyreached the Beas station. There somearrangements were already made forsitting.

Whom was Maste r waiting for?For whom He loved.

Sant Kirpal Singh was coming to Beasby train, and Master Baba SawanSingh wanted to me et Him directly atthe railway station. This is the lovebetween the Master and the disciple He was waiting for His disciple at therailway sta tion.

No one knew (the me aning of this),becaus e it was the first chance to s eethis miracle in their life; it was a miraclefor them that a Mas ter was go ing tofetch His disc iple from the railwaystation.Actually Baba Sawan Singh had evenno time, the who le Ashra m be ing fullof disciples lots of people comingfrom a ll over India a nd from ab road.It was a beautiful thing that Master leftall the work and went to the railwaystation just to s how His love andaffection for Kirpal Singh.

When they were sitting there, MasterSawa n Singh aga in said, Now thiswhole atmos phe re is full of fragranc e,there is so much vibration, so muchintoxication, dont you feel it? Mightbe, you are fee ling it now? They allwere very surprised to hear thes ewords from the Maste r all the time,the s ame words He was telling on theway there. What is this intoxication?What is going on and what is it thatBaba S awan Singh wants to te ll us?What further lesson is it that Masterwants to give us?

He has b rought us here for a s pecialpurpose. But no one knew whowould be coming and who was wishingfor Him so muc h. But when the traincame nearer, Master Sawan S inghsto od up and sa id, Well, when He willse e me , He will jump from the train.

So Master Sawan Singh raised Hishand and shouted, Kirpal Singh, wait,dont jump! But the train stoppedexactly where Master S awan S inghwas s tanding, and He embraced Him.

Then Master Baba Sawan Singhremarked that, when the disciple startsto come to the Maste r, the disciplebecomes receptive and he s mells thatf ragrance which c omes f rom theMaster and vibrates the whole atmos -phe re. This fragrance is a lread y in thebody and is working there, and wecan smell it if we become receptive.

He said, When a true disciple startsto mee t the Master, the Master alsoexperiences the sam e. He also ge tsthe fragrance from His disciple. H.S.
