The Funk Zone got a bit funkier late September with the opening

of the Guitar Bar.

The latest addition to the “Anacapa Project,” the Guitar

Bar is placed next to the Lark and Lucky Penny at 137 Anacapa

Street Suite A.

My vision for Guitar Bar was to create a different kind of shop where

clientele of all levels can have an authentic musician’s experience

“My vision for Guitar Bar was to create a different kind of shop where clientele of all levels can have an authentic musician’s experience, whether they’re life-long players,

buying their very first guitar, or just coming to check us out,”

Fatelli said in a press release issued by Guitar Bar. Fatelli’s vision is backed by over 25 years experience in the musical instrument

industry, which he spent selling top-quality guitars

and designing custom guitars, and with

36-years of guitar playing. His love for guitars and performing is totally apparent in the set-up of the shop. Walls lined with guitars – including Taylor, Paul Reed Smith, Teye, Echopark, and Cole Clark amongst others - a stage where anyone can perform, and lounge furniture make the shop a cool hang-out spot for even non-musicians.

Santa Barbara native Jamie

Faletti opened the guitar boutique with the goal of providing locals an unparalleled shopping experience. Unlike major guitar retailers, the Guitar Bar offers a social atmosphere, encouraging clients to build communities based on their shared interest in music and performing.

Not only does Guitar

Bar provide an environment

for people to embrace music,

they also teach and give back

to the community. Fatelli and

his staff provide guitar lessons

to people of all ages and all

backgrounds, and the shop

boasts two sound-proof demo

rooms and four lesson rooms.

When Fatelli isn’t

teaching or jamming, he

commits his time to providing

guitars to organizations and

people who wouldn’t have the

opportunity to learn or play

otherwise. For every high-end

guitar that Guitar Bar sells they

produce an acoustic low-end

guitar for a potential beginning

student. Jamie is working with

organizations such as Girls

Rock, Notes for Notes, and

local schools. *

Every piece of Wallace Piatt’s art tells a story. From the horses on

sheet metal to the seven-foot-tall painting of an American Indian, each piece is colorful and intriguing. His pop art a combination of graphics;

such as Louis Vuitton logos logos, Audrey Hepburn, old articles, and comic book images. The influence of his American Indian heritage and love for vintage magazines, comic books, and antiques is apparent in his art.

Since then he’s found a healthy balance between and orderly life and chaotic art. His studio is in “Container Land”--the raw and imperfect part of the funk zone. It’s astonishing to walk into an old shipping container and see a $6,000 piece of art, that looks like it belongs in a mansion, as

the focal point of an all white living room. His art, while chaotic, is beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and full of vibrant colors and iconic images. You could stare at a piece of his art for hours and still be entertained by all the layers!

Have you ever been to the Channel Islands? Whether you have or not, you haven’t been to the Channel Islands like this. Aboard Tao, one of Santa Barbara harbors most luxurious yachts, you and your family can explore the fascinating ecosystem off our coast from the comfort of this 65-foot adventure vessel. Tao, captianed by Paul Noury, is the only luxurious way to get from the Santa Barbara Harbor to Santa Cruz Island in 45 minutes. What better way to spend the day with family during the holidays than cruising at 27 knots across the Santa Barbara Channel with all the

comforts of home. I’m talking cappuccino maker, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, hot showers, full kitchen, and did I say cappuccino maker? The only things not available on board are cell phone reception and WiFi, but you won’t even miss it. Besides, this is family bonding time! You leave for Santa Cruz Island in the morning. Once you get there, Tao can squeeze in Painted Cave, one of the longest caves in the world! You can even touch the cave ceiling from the boat! Then you’ll anchor off of one of the many coves.

Page 33: Santa Barbara Life & Style Magazine - November 2013

You can kayak, snorkel, or swim in the crystal clear water. Or simply relax on the deck and take in the view. And since the weather is beautiful and you’re already out there you might as well hit another few Islands, right? Head to San Miguel Island and take the dingy to go face to face with Elephant Seals. Go fishing in the giant kelp beds around Santa Rosa Island. On your way to Anacapa Island, you might see one of the 2 mega pods of dolphins that live in the channel. Just imagine being surrounded by 5,000 dolphins. Or a pod of 30 whales swimming under the yacht and breaching out of the ocean. Perfect Christmas card photo op!

If a day trip isn’t enough for you, take a queue from celebrities and charter Tao for a four day surfing or fishing trip! If you’ve never been to the Channel Islands before, this is your chance because a round trip to Santa Cruz Island usually takes a full day, yet it takes 4 hours (and about $4,000 for up to 6 people) on Tao. So you can experience the abundance of marine life that inhabit the Santa Barbara Channel for a day and be back in time for dinner at the Biltmore.

Q: What do you enjoy

most about cooking?

A: I have always been

drawn to creative pursuits,

so cooking allows me to

create something new

each day, which I find very

satisfying. As a personal

chef I also really enjoy

developing a connection

with my clients through

food.

Q: You use fresh,

seasonal, and local

ingredients. What

are your favorite

local ingredients to

incorporate into your

unique creations?

A: I love using squash in

all kinds of ways during

the fall and winter. I’ll

roast them and stuff

them, or add them

to salads and pastas

(like butternut squash

lasagna), and of course

they are great as soups.

I also love incorporating

pomegranates into my

dishes this time of year.

The seeds are festive to

scatter over just about

anything, and the juice is

great reduced to make a

sauce or salad dressing

with.

Q: What is your secret,

staple ingredient that

you infuse in your

creations?

A: Lately I have loved

adding freshly grated

nutmeg to all kinds of

things for a nice fall

touch. I add it to cream

sauces, mashed potatoes

and anything with

pumpkin in it.

Page 49: Santa Barbara Life & Style Magazine - November 2013

Q: Notice any trends this

holiday season for menu

orders or customizations?

What are most requests

from clients about during

this time of year?

A: The orders usually don’t

arrive until November,

so it’s hard to name any

particular trends, but

usually around that time of

year braised meat dishes

tend to be very popular in

terms of entrees because

they are just so warm and

comforting. Things like

Red Wine Braised Short

Ribs with fresh, homemade

Pappardelle Pasta or Cider

Braised Lamb Shanks over

Parsnip Puree are always a

big hit.

Q: What is your favorite

meal to make for clients

this holiday season? What

menu item are you most

excited for clients to taste

and why is it so special?

A: I love making soups

from scratch using fresh

ingredients because they are

healthy, filling, comforting

and full of nutrients. A

couple of my favorite

soups are my Butternut

Squash and Apple Soup

with Apple-Bacon Relish

and a Thai Chicken and

Lemongrass Stew with

Potato-Chive Dumplings.

Q: Any special items you

developed this holiday

season that is a personal

favorite of yours or

regular clients?

A: My Greek Yogurt

Cheesecake is a unique twist

on the classic cheesecake

and it’s a little lighter too.

In the past I have made it

with apple streusel topping,

pomegranate syrup and

grapefruit-mint compote,

so there are lots of options

to customize it. Also for

Thanksgiving a fun dessert

I have made that’s a little

different from traditional

desserts is Mini Pumpkin

Whoopie Pies with Maple-

Whiskey Buttercream. I

love making miniature,

individually sized items; I

think they are more fun to

eat that way.

Taking your family and

friends wine tasting for

the holidays is a no brain-

er when you need to get

them out of the house.

But most likely, you won’t

be able to please every

body because hey, it’s

family after all. Thankfully,

there is a solution.

Between two winer-

ies on Anacapa, lies Santa

Barbara’s first distillery.

You heard right, distillery.

Ian Culter opened Cutler’s

Distillery & Spirits as a

rejuvenation of a family

tradition. His great grand-

pa had the idea to start a

bar in the 1920’s but his

dream was halted to fight

in WW1 and took a sec-

ond hit when the prohibi-

tion was passed. He paired

up with the moonshine

scene and started making

underground whiskey for

local officials. Once pro-

hibition was lifted, Duke’s

Bar was finally opened

Duke’s was in business for

50 years before the reces-

sion hit in the 1980’s.

Ian Cutler attended

UCSB and has been here

for 14 years which makes

him here long enough to

be called a true local. Ian

set out to revitalize the

Cutler’s family tradition

and puts his passion in

every drop!

How many places can you go dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and be treated like royalty? Not many, which is one of the

reasons the San Ysidro Ranch is so special.

Nestled in the foothills of Montecito, this ultra-luxury resort has been around since

the 1800s! It’s historic charm and unrivaled privacy make it ideal for a romantic getaway

or family vacation this holiday season.

After check in, you drive to your cottage so your car is conveniently right outside your gate. Each recently renovated cottage has it’s own patio, jacuzzi, outdoor shower, heated bathroom floor, and fireplace--perfect this time of year when the night starts to cool down.

You’re not just a number at the San Ysidro Ranch. In place of room numbers, each cottage is named after a plant or flower, such as Geranium, Oak, or Rose. That is except for the 2,000 square foot Kennedy Cot Ev tage, where Jackie and John Kennedy enjoyed their honeymoon. This

cottage has two identical bedrooms, claw foot bathtubs, a glass shower that opens to the inside and outside, and a deck with a jacuzzi and ocean views. Picture yourself relaxing in the jacuzzi with a glass of wine while watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.

You’ll feel like you have the entire 500 acre resort to yourself!

Page 57: Santa Barbara Life & Style Magazine - November 2013

Everything about the San Ysidro Ranch is just right, perfect really. The gardens (including the chef ’s organic garden) are lush and immaculate. The cottages are luxurious and updated, yet have a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

The Resort offers in-room spa treatments such as the 75 minute Nirvana massage, which uses rosemary, eucalyptus and lemongrass oils. Just like being home for the holidays, only better!

Pets are not only allowed at the San Ysidro Ranch, they are the star guests! When a guest stays at a cottage, their name is written in wood blocks by the front door, but if their dog is with them, the dog’s name is written there. Your dog can even get an in-room massage! All they ask is that “pets keep their parents on a leash.”

In-room spa treatments feature rosemary,

eucalyptus and lemongrass.

Thanks to endless

gourmet snacks from

local purveyors, you

could never leave your

comfortable cottage. But

the San Ysidro Ranch

also has two restaurants:

The Stonehouse and Plow

and Angel. Sit outside on

the patio and indulge in

seasonal specialties such as

parmesan crusted Alaskan

halibut with house-made

herb gnocchi, artichoke

hearts, asparagus, Lucques

olives, and basil sauce from

the chef ’s garden. Finish

off your meal with their

Grand Marnier Souffle

complimented with passion

fruit creme anglaise and

roasted strawberry gelato.

Delicious!

Be sure to visit the

historical building where

the family who tilled the

land lived. It was built in

1825, and is the oldest

building at “The Ranch”.

The rustic building is still

intact--original fireplace

and all! I recommend

reserving it for a family

gathering this holiday

season.

The Ranch has

always been popular

among celebrities. Audrey

Hepburn and Marilyn

Monroe spent many a

weekend here back in the

day. Fast forward to the

21st centruy where this

oasis welcomes todays

stars. Recently, the Ranch

hosted the wedding of

Victoria’s Secret model

Lily Aldridge to Caleb

Followill from Kings of

Leon and actress Gwyneth

Paltrow to Chris Martin

from Coldplay. The

Resort appeals to high

profile guests because of

exclusivity and privacy

the Resort affords. Yet

thanks to the unparalled

surroundings and unrivaled

service, each and every

guest feels like a celebrity at

the San Ysidro Ranch.

He converted his 1959 GMC pick up into a “bar” and has a big selection of vinyl in the vintage record booth. Whether your grandpa likes jazz music or your crazy uncle prefers rock & roll, the live music will not disap-point.

Christian makes the wine in shop and wants his customers to be a part of the process. I talked to Christian as he was stirring a batch of Cabernet and he said the one thing we do is “take wine too seriously.” He wanted a place people could enjoy themselves in an environment that everyone feels welcome. *
