REPEATER REPORTRepeater Committee Report(5/3.0/69:’ Dy Stan W~6VJY
Well1 there are a few thingsto report this month. I wentto the USGS and spent $9.00 tobuy some topo—graphic maps. Iwanted to get an idea of theheight of our repeater site.It is at about 120 feet abovesea level not includanc theheight o-f the hospital. (WestValley’s site is at about 260feet, by the way..)
~t last month’s Foothillflea market I found and boughta Midland 13—509 220MHz transceiver for sale for $150 afterdiscuss:ng it with some of theboard of directors, It will befor use as either a 220control receiver or as a 220repeater ~after some e~tensiyere—work1 that is). It workswell1 in both transmit andreceave.
I’ve been asked to peneratea list of imorovements to therepeater (and tneir costs) bythe board of directors. Theseimprovements will most likelymci ude:1. Purchase and replace the 2m
antenna with one that isdirectional generally tothe west (with newfeedi me)
2. Install 2 M1CORtransceivers as new 2mhardware (1 as xmtr, 1 asrcvr) when they are madeavailable to us by the SanJose Fire Department
3. Purchase and install asecond RC—95 for use as the440 repeater controller, enabling us to split thetwo repeaters or link themtogether for nets or otherfunctions
4. Repackage the 440 repeaterfor ease of maintenance andinstall new feedline
5. Investigate a 220 frequencyfor possible repeater useand, if available, get oneset up, running, andlinkable to the other twomachines
6. Install a phone patch formember use.
Our lack of altitude at theantenna site is now and willcon.tanue to be a limitingfactor to improving coverageof the remeater in general. However, the new 2m antennashoul d help things somewhat.
Look for a survey -form in afuture Sc.C~iR~—6ram asking foryour input on repeaterimprovements. When itarrives. I encourace you tofall it out end return it.
On another note, I havebeen able to acpujre all ofthe parts necessary to hu~ld 5band—pass filters for usedurang Field Day with theexception of some toroidalcores (on order and due in anyday now..?. These should be adefanite help in eliminatancthe interference and desensewe experienced last yearbetween the CW and Phonestations. If the cores arrivein tame, I will be bringingthe filter parts to the Junemeeting for some soldering andassembly. If my employerpermits. I will be bringing aspectrum analyzer (withtracking generator) to themeeting to tune the filters.See you at Field Day.
~s alwe.vs, inputs regardingthe repeaters and improvementsare welcome.P~ge 3
DOC RECALLS FIELD DAV 1948
In remembering Paul Tibbs, W6WGO in my col u.mn 1 ast month. I mentioned that he had been active in ARRL field days when he lived in San Jose. The first of these was the 1948 Field Day~
which was the first that SCCARA participated in a4ter WWII.
We star t ed ma king plans at the January or Febr~arv meeting just like we do now. !t cer-ta.inly wasn't as easy in t hose days as it is now. There wa.sr;'t as much commercial equipment available and mobile and portable communication was just not common then.
Where we might take our Icom~
Yaesu or Kenwood rigs today, in those days it was more common to
bring military surplus equipment , perhaps home-brew equip ment, and vour- shack r-ecei ··;er. I should point out that transcei~er s were not common then~ and to most of us a "rig" was a (tr-ansm:tter ) e..nd rece i ··;e r . Most of our- receivers 1·;ere Na.t ion :>.l, Hammerland, PME or Ha.ll i cr .;:..f t er-s, 1.,:i th Hall icra~ters being the most common.
At ~ield Day 1948 we wor ked in the five tr-ansmitter class, to the best of my recollections . I worked on the 40 meter s station and Paul handled 75 meter-
There was no 40 meter-phone . Pa.ul I<Jas using a GF1 1 s u.r;::alus ri g a.nd I :a.n't r-emember what we used on 40 CW.
One of the pr-oblems in t hose days was the f act that many of us were usi ng cr-ystal control ~i gs~
much more common than VFOs ~
and they did not do well for contesti ng .
The location for- our- Field Day that year- was Mt. Lama Pr i eta where W6WSH r-epeater an d several others ar e now l ocated. At that time there was no channel 11 on the mountain, the on ly fi :-:ed feat ure being the for est lookout
Page- 4
station. We scor-ed in about the middle of our- class that yearand one of my clear-est recollections is that near- the end of Sunday just befor-e we shut down we wer-e making as high as 16 contacts and hour on 40 CW. That was outstanding for- many of us because we were not contesters and in fact contests were not as popular- at that time.
We had the usual generator problems !we r-an out of gas in the middle of the night! and of course had a great steak BBD.
The contest ended at 4 PM and we wr- apped it up in a hurry and came down Route 17 ti r ed but happ y . It was much the same as
i t is today and Field Day led to othereven bigger attempts at winning. We used Loma Prieta the nex t couple years but then star-ting in ! 951 we moved to Mt. Ham iltcn and the big time.
Some of the calls I r-ememb e~ from the 1948 Field Day besides W6WGO and W6!RJ were W6HC ~ W6NX~ W6UTV. W6LZL. W6CFK, W6YDN, W6GFJ, W6FYA, W6MVL, W6TAN, W6AVJ , W6HAN and I'm sure t here were many others. If I l eft you out please tell me so that I can give you credit in a later- col umn .
FLEA MARKET INFO Were you at t he last flea mar ket. SCCARA was ' 1 1 1 1 We sold e ver- yth i ng but the Br oo klyn Bridge and made a ti dy sum for our repeater fund .
