Ocean Mist Farms’ family farming roots took hold nearly 100 years

ago when Daniel Pieri and cousins Amerigo and Angelo Del Chiaros launched the California Artichoke & Vegetable Growers Corporation in 1924. Together, they leased land south of Castroville and soon Alfred Tottino, a local vegetable grower, joined the three men in their new business venture.

Headquartered in Castroville, Ocean Mist Farms is the largest grower of fresh artichokes in the United States. Farm-ing year-round in three ideal California growing regions: Castroville, Oxnard and Coachella – plus Baja, Cali-fornia - each area is known for fertile ground and pro-ductive microclimates. Castroville is, in fact, known as “The Artichoke Capital of the World” and is the original home of the annual Castroville Artichoke Food & Wine Festival.

In addition to artichokes, Ocean Mist Farms grows a full line of premium, fresh vegetables year-round in multiple

growing regions through-out California (Castroville, Huron, Oxnard, Coachella and Imperial Valley), Arizo-na (Yuma) and Mexico.Their fresh produce is

grown using both organic and con-ventional methods and can be found in fine grocery stores in either the Ocean Mist Organic or Ocean Mist Farms brand.

To go.Whoever put those two delicious

words together really knew what they were doing: or-der your food, ask for it “to go,” save yourself time, and eat wherever you want. You might not even have to get out of the car. Yes, “to go” are magic words but, as in the new book “Ray and Joan” by Lisa Napoli, there are still things you can’t take with you when you do. It all started with oranges. “Millions of oranges… dotted” the southern California hills in the pre-Depression years and, with newly-affordable automobiles spurring Americans to travel, brothers Mac and Dick McDonald saw a golden opportu-nity. They’d studied the way hamburger joints were run then, and they devised a better way. One of their new ideas was to hire an agent to sell franchises, which is where Ray Kroc stepped in. Born in 1902 to Bohemian immigrants, Kroc had always possessed charisma, the gift of gab, and love for the limelight, eventually parlaying those strengths into a sales job that took him around the country. When he discovered what the brothers McDonald were doing,

Kroc knew he’d seen the future and he persuaded them to hire him. Though fi-nancing was never quite secure in those early years, it wasn’t long before

McDonald’s restaurants were seemingly every-where.And so, of course, was Ray Kroc. Part of his job was to approve new “store” open-ings and it was on one such trip that he met Joan Smith, who was playing piano in an up-scale Minneapolis lounge. Though

both were wed to someone else, they were smitten

with one another; he asked her twice to marry him and she finally did.But blissful happiness wasn’t to be. Kroc was volatile, and drank too much, while Joan was bored with merely be-ing a billionaire’s wife, and she restlessly searched for projects. When Kroc died in 1984, she mourned, then seized her chance – but not in any conventional way.Says Napoli, “She wanted to make a difference, but serving on a corporate board, on any board, wasn’t what she had in mind.”Have you ever become so captivated by a story that you felt unmoored when it

ended? Yep, I could have read “Ray & Joan” all day.Yet, undoubtedly, as author Lisa Napoli indicates in her book, if Joan Kroc had had her way, we wouldn’t know the rest of the story. Kroc, says Napoli, wanted her philanthropic actions to be anon-ymous, even though she enigmatical-ly left plenty of clues. Between tales of both Krocs and their contemporaries, Napoli follows those hints to leave read-ers wondering what we don’t know. This bit of mystery, inadvertent as it might have been originally, feels like the plot of a book of intrigue, and serves to leave readers hungry for the next page, and the next…This book will likely be found in the business section of bookstore or library, but it’s really so much more. “Ray & Joan” has shades of history, pop-culture, biography, and finance inside – and doesn’t that sound delicious? n

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the high-est bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insur-ance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. SEO Basics for Small Business Owners

Opening a small business is just the first step on your entrepreneurial jour-ney. Getting people in the door of your business—whether virtual or brick-and-mortar—is a much longer-term chal-lenge/opportunity, depending on how you look at it.

These days, SEO (search engine optimi-zation) is essential to connecting with potential customers. You likely already have a web presence and ideally you’re active on social media. These both al-ready contribute to your SEO.

But, like opening the doors of your busi-ness, simply having a web presence and social media accounts is not enough for strong SEO. You need to optimize your website and blog for search engines so your target market can find you. Here are nine SEO basics to catch the atten-tion of Google and your potential cus-tomers.

1. Clear Site NavigationMake sure that your website is easy to navigate. If people viewing it have an easy time navigating around, Goo-gle will as well. Create a hierarchy for your site, which is a fancy way of say-ing prioritize your pages and make sure blog posts and subpages link to your high-priority pages, such as “Shop,” “Schedule a Tour,” or “Get a Quote.”

2. Publish High-quality ContentContent is one of the most power-ful SEO tools in your toolbox. Publish high-quality content that speaks di-rectly to the needs and interests of your

target market. Content helps Google, and users, understand what your site is about, so be clear and focused in your content efforts.

3. Internal LinksAs you generate content, be sure to use internal links to other blog posts to di-rect readers (and Google) to other pieces of your site’s content, as well as high-pri-ority pages.

4. External LinksSomewhat counter-intuitively, linking away from your page to high-quality sites can boost your SEO and help estab-lish you as a quality source of informa-tion.

5. Inbound LinksInbound links are different from inter-nal links. Inbound links are links from other sites back to yours. The higher the quality of the linking site, the more SEO juice it provides you.

Where appropriate, ask partner com-panies and organizations to link back to you. A great way to get high-quality inbound links is to write guest posts for other sites and link back to your site in the intro and author bio.

6. Use smart URLsWhen you create content, be sure the URLs have your keywords in them. Many platforms, including Wordpress, have an easy way to edit the URL at the top of the blog post draft. For instance, if your blog post or page is about grow-ing strawberries in Santa Cruz Coun-ty, make sure the URL is something like: yoursite.com/growing-strawber-ries-in-santa-cruz, rather than yoursite.com/blog/2347230.

7. Blog Post Headlines, Subheaders and ImagesGoogle prioritizes keywords found in blog post headlines and subheadlines, which are those options to use H1, H2, H3 in your post. Use these header tags and make sure you have your keywords in both the post headline and the sub-heads.

Another protip is to put your keywords in your image names. For example, in-stead of uploading an image titled, IMG238460.ppg, change the image name to Strawberries-Santa-Cruz.jpg.

8. Clear, Consistent Keyword StrategyBefore you start writing the copy for your website or blog post, know which keywords and keyword phrases you’re working to be found on Google for. Clar-ifying, in advance, your target keywords will keep you on-track with your copy and help you avoid trying to insert those phrases into the copy after the fact.

9. Play the Long Game and Don’t Try to Game GoogleSEO is a long game. Content market-ing is a long game. Google rewards high-quality sites with useful, relevant, high-quality content. Think like a Goo-gle searcher, not like someone trying to game Google. Google is far to smart to game these days and you don’t want to risk getting penalized for questionable SEO tactics. Go for clear, focused, qual-ity copy and you’ll be well on your way to stronger SEO.
