JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT HONORS CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS LEADERS Junior Achievement Announces Latest Class to Be Inducted at Annual Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame Event

Pebble Beach, CA, October 9, 2018 – Junior Achievement of Northern California announced the 2019 Class of the Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame, the latest group of business and community leaders to be honored at the organization’s annual celebration, the JA Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame Luncheon, on February 1, 2019 at the Inn at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach. Hall of Fame Laureates are selected by a committee of their peers, led by past inductees into the Business Hall of Fame. Laureates are nominated and selected based on their accomplishments in five key areas: business excellence, courageous thinking and actions, vision and innovation, inspirational leadership, and philanthropy.

The Class of Laureates to be inducted into the JA Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame on February 1st includes: ▪ Tonya Antle; Co-Founder and EVP, Organic Produce Network ▪ Janine Chicourrat; General Manager, Portola Hotel and Spa ▪ Ron Elliott; Founder and CEO, Excelligence Learning Corp. (retired) ▪ Steve Goldman; Principal, SSB Construction

“Our Selection Committee once again identified an incredible class of Hall of Fame inductees,” said JA Regional Director Taran Barca-Hall. “Each year this group of JA champions invest tremendous time and energy into our selection process, working together to ensure that the event honors the most esteemed and deserving leaders from across the entire Central Coast business community. The 2019 class includes four dynamic and accomplished individuals. We look forward to celebrating their achievements and raising vital funds for JA’s economic education programs at the event on February 1st.”

Junior Achievement brings business and economic education to local students. JA programs empower young people to own their future economic success through hands-on lessons focused on three core content areas: financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurship. JA programs are provided at no cost to students or schools. Junior Achievement programs are delivered by local adult mentors from the business community, service clubs, local colleges and universities and many other local JA partners. The JA curriculum features classroom-based programs as well as workplace-based mentoring and student competitions. The JA Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame luncheon is the major fund-raising event for Junior Achievement programs on the Central Coast. Proceeds from the 2019 Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame event will help underwrite the cost of JA programs for 5,000+ K-12th grade students in Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties during the 2018-2019 school year.

For more information on JA’s programs on the Central Coast, or to reserve a table at the Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame Luncheon, contact Regional Director Taran Barca-Hall at [email protected]. More information on JA’s standards-aligned curriculum can be found at www.janorcal.org.

Just do it.That’s a demand that comes

from everywhere. Sneakers say it, your spouse says it, the law demands it, your diet may say it; your boss does, for sure. Just do it. Buckle down and get it done because, as in the new book “Soon” by An-drew Santella, delaying and dawdling are not so delightful.

Charles Darwin was a terrible procrastinator.

It’s true that he got things done: he was an accomplished author, a father, a scientist who studied barna-cles almost to the point of obsession, and his thoughts on what he called “natural selection” had been arranged cohesively and written.

Twenty years went by before it was published.

As he was preparing to write this book on procrastination – research which he’d put off until he couldn’t wait any longer – Andrew Santella began seeing a lot of foot-dragging hidden throughout history. Procras-tinators, as it turns out, are in good company: 1 out of 5 of us chronically waits until the last minute to start tasks. Such delay, says Santella, “is one of the oldest stories ever told.”

It’s also “notoriously difficult to de-fine” and equally hard to eradicate.

Not only do businesses demand on-time productivity, but self-improvement books and classes are filled with anti-procrastination advice. Says Santella, none of that takes into account “the stuff that makes life such a pre-cious mess…” And it doesn’t do anything to eliminate what is believed by some to be the root of the problem, which is that people are

ruled by emotions – especially fear.

To try to control time-frittering, remember that “behavior shapes mood.” Do that which you’re putting off and it “will make you feel better.” Keep in mind that there is a good side to procrastination, and that’s opti-mism: tomorrow is always a good day, for a procrastinator. Take a page from Benjamin Franklin, and make a list of things you need to do. Remember that it’s “nearly universal” to fit work into the time it’s allotted. Minimize distractions, utilize productivity apps, muster all the self-restraint you have, and remember that you’re not alone.

And if all else fails, pray to St. Expe-dite. He’s the patron saint of procras-tinators.

Time’s a-wastin’. You need a book to help you conquer your habit of late-ness but “Soon” isn’t it. Even so, it’s a great way to kill time because author Andrew Santella says he’s exactly in your same position.

As it turns out, so were a lot of famous people – most of them, quite accomplished in fields of history, literature, and psychology. That, as Santella shows, indicates that even though foot-dragging is stressful and detrimental to one’s career, it doesn’t always lead to failure or worse. The anecdotes he shares sometimes get a little too deep, but they do provide insight as to why someone might dil-ly-dally and, if you’re willing to dig a little, what can be done about it.

That makes “Soon” a book for pro-crastinators and for those who aren’t, but are irritated by one. Chances are, that’s you, and you’ll enjoy reading it. Tomorrow. n

The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be can-celled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed. The amount that must be paid if the Mortgage Deed of Trust is to be reinstated prior to the scheduled sale is based on the nature of the breach, this loan is not subject to reinstatement. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-18-808270-CL. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postpone-ment information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser’s sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. Brand Storytelling: 11 Tips for Small Business Owners

How much thought do you give to the story of your brand? Not your market-ing and advertising (though they are related) but the story of your origins, purpose, community, values, team and mission.

Brand storytelling is getting a lot of at-tention right now, and for good reason. People don’t want to be marketed to, or advertised at, we want to be engaged. One of the best ways to engage your target audience is to share the stories of you, your team and your business.

Storytelling helps people connect with you on an authentic level. It enables you to share your journey, vision and pur-pose for starting your business in the first place. Stories help us understand ourselves and the world. That may sound a bit too woo-woo for a column about marketing, but think about the last time you were emotionally moved by a com-mercial or marketing campaign—I’m willing to bet there was a story involved.

The best way to get started with brand storytelling is to simply start, and refine your strategy as you go. Whether you’re new to brand storytelling or have years of experience under your marketing belt, here are 11 prompts to refine and share your unique story.

1. Who are you? Start with the basics. Who are the people behind your com-pany? Don’t hide, people want to see who you are and what you do.

2. What did you do before you started your business? What’s your origin story? What piqued your interest in something

enough that you wanted to make it your profession?

3. Why did you start your business? Starting a business takes commitment, vision and intelligence. What drove you to start this particular business?

4. Who do you serve? It’s important to clearly define your target market. Who do you serve? How do you serve them? Do you provide entertainment, a profes-sional service, products, materials?

5. How do you help people? Related to number 4, helping people get what they want is the best way to get what you want in your business. How do you help people? What problem are your solv-ing? How do you make their lives eas-ier? How do you help them fulfill their hopes and goals? Weave this throughout your brand storytelling.

6. What are your brand values? What do you stand for as a company? Sharing your brand values is storytelling gold. You don’t have to be a nonprofit or B Corporation or social good company to do good in the world and have strong values associated with your brand. Whatever your values are, make them clear to your team and customers.

7. How do you make an impact and give back to your community? What are you doing to make the world a better place? Again, this is storytelling gold.

8. Who are your teammates? Maybe you’re a company of one. If that’s the case, who are your suppliers, collabo-rators and providers? Share the stories of how you work together. If you have a team running your business, share the stories of those people. Who are they, what are their roles, how do they fur-

ther the company’s mission? Give us a glimpse behind the curtain of your business.

9. What are your teammates passionate about? Taking number 8 a step further, share the deeper stories of your team. What do they care about? Why do they do the work they do? If you can capture the humans behind the jobs, you can do some brilliant, humanizing storytelling.

10. What’s the big picture vision for your company? If everything went really well in your company, what would you most like to see? What are you working toward? Let your target audience in on what powers your own passion.

11. What makes your company unique? In marketing, we talk about differenti-ators, or differentiating factors. These are the things that set you apart from your competition. Storytelling is a pow-erful way to do this. How are you dif-ferent? Why should people care about you, specifically? What do you do better than everyone else? Don’t be shy here. Sharing your differentiators with the world is one of the best ways to attract attention and, even better, attract peo-ple from your target audience.

Now that you have some prompts for basic brand storytelling, choose a few, f lesh out the details, and start think-ing about how you can incorporate your responses into stories of your brand. In next month’s column I’ll share tips for getting those stories out into the world, including pointers on brand tone, voice and angle.
