Hadassah’s 100-Year Centennial: Honoring America’s Jewish Women Leaders
D id you know that May was “Jew-ish American Heritage Month?” I had no idea! In recognition, the
Huffington Post did a special feature in its Religion section on Hadassah, tying it to our centennial celebration. The story is en-titled “Hadassah at 100: Honoring Ameri-ca’s Jewish Women Leaders.” One hundred top leaders of Hadassah, including a few deceased ones, were featured. Each brief article included a picture of the honoree, some facts about her service to the orga-nization, and, sometimes, her own words about her life in Hadassah. Here are a few snippets (minus the long lists of their ac-complishments) from that lengthy feature:
Karen Everett (Larchmont, N.Y.)— Hadassah is Jewish women from all across the country and around the world, of all ages and backgrounds, coming together to heal the world. Hadassah is the only organization where the power of women, in particular Jewish women, is brought to bear on some of the most difficult health and welfare challenges of our day.”

Barbara Goldstein (the Deputy Director of the Hadassah Office in Jerusalem) — “I live according to Pirkei Avot - the task is not mine to finish, but I must be part of it.”

Other People’s MoneyThe award-winning play, Other People’s Money, will be performed at the Santa Fe Playhouse, June 14 -July 1st, Thursdays thru Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. This play features one of the great characters in theatre, “Larry the Liquidator,” a successful corporate raider who has become rich by buying up companies and selling off their assets.
In 1991 the play was made into a movie starring Danny DeVito and Gregory Peck. With the Wall Street turmoil today, the story is as relevant as when it first opened in New York. The dialogue is smart, funny and at the same time tremendously interesting.
Written by Jerry Sterner and co-directed by Ron Bloomberg and Barry Hazen, the play features a cast that all have Broadway backgrounds. This is a must-see production! Tickets are selling fast. Mah Jongg and BridgeMah Jongg anyone?With such a terrific response to our first Mah Jongg day in November, we are having another event on August 7th at Temple Beth Shalom. Again we will have maj teachers available to improve your skills. It is a great way to meet new people with common interests (what is better than maj and food?) or to find a sub for your game. Santa Fe Jewish Film FestivalSFJFF will present “A Portrait of Wally” at CCA on September 9th. This fascinating documentary examines the historic court battle over Egon Schiele’s Portrait of Wally, a Nazi-looted painting that was stolen from a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna and wound up in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The spring winds couldn’t stop our chapter from having a busy schedule of food and friendship
and birthday parties. On March 25th, Reggie Klein, Sally Lowen, Sandy Levine, Patricia Zisman, Joanie Hershfeld and Carol Toobin celebrated Hadassah’s Hundredth Year at a statewide birthday party in Albuquerque at Congregation Albert. The program included history and songs from each decade, films and remembrances, including Reggie’s talk about the history of the Santa Fe chapter. We enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by two birthday cakes and enjoyed making new friends with ladies from Albuquerque and Los Alamos.
We also sponsored two onegs, one at Temple Beth Shalom (March 30) and the other at Congregation Beit Tikva (April 27). Valerie Frost spoke about Henrietta Szold and Barbara LaMont talked about the service
to Hadassah of her mother Leah Kellogg. More wonderful food and cakes! Thanks to the following who helped plan, set-up and clean-up: Margo Taylor, Barbara LaMont, Valerie Frost, Lauren Peck, Patricia Zisman, Kate Shane and Carol Toobin.
On April 1 our ladies spent a delightful afternoon with Randee Kaiser, Lt. Col (ret). Randee took us around the world with a wonderful slide show of all the places she was assigned to in her years with the Air Force. Her stories provided much insight into the military life of a Jewish woman, from such remote areas as Central America, Antarctica and Afghanistan. Many thanks to Judy Tully, who was our hostess for the event.
Fifty-eight women and men filled our room at Hotel Santa Fe on May 6 for our annual Spring Luncheon. We had a delicious buffet lunch, followed by a short meeting, and a musical afternoon with our guest speaker Kate Shane. Kate gave us the history of the harp. Not only did she play for us but also taught five lucky ladies how to play “Frere Jacques” on student harps. A special thank-you to our underwriter, The Estate of Leah Kellogg, and our sponsors, Fran Berlin, Valerie Frost, Barbara LaMont, Joyce Levine, Sandy Levine, Sally Lowen, Kate Shane, and Carol Toobin. Also thanks to Sheila Gershen and Sandy Levine who welcomed everyone at the door.

Henrietta Szold began life in the turmoil of America’s Civil War. She closed her eyes on the eve of
an atomic bomb’s thunderous end of the Second World War. She had seen the unparalleled woe of her people and the terrifying destructiveness of Hitler’s evil spirit as an overshad-owing climax of the Dreyfus trial, the Kishineff massacres, the Polish Pogroms.
But she had seen also the awakening of her people. She pioneered in the cause of Zionism in America and in the Land of Israel. Two thousand years after the Maccabees, Henrietta Szold relived the story of their valor
and dedication to their people’s freedom.
Henrietta Szold was humble in spirit, but mighty in action. Honor and fame were thrust upon her; but service she herself sought passionately. Out of the sorrow of her people and the cry of its children, she helped the new Zionism to rise.
Of her it may be said: she put heart into the hopeless and delivered the helpless; she was mother and father to the orphan; she took up the cause of the poor, wore justice as a garment and charity and kindness as a robe. Youth and elders sat at her feet and men and women sought her counsel.
On this the 120th anniversary of her birth, we remember Henrietta Szold as the humble servant whose loving kindness and supreme dedication brought light into her people’s life.
We of Hadassah pray that with each passing year we may gain strength to carry forward her vision.

Dear Family and Friends of Hadassah,When I came to Hadassah, everyone
was excited and involved in the move to the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower. Everyone was committed to the project; everyone was energized by the task. Everyone took to heart the words: “We’re not waiting for the future. We’re building it.” These are important words – words that apply to the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower, but even more to the entire Hadassah Medical Organization.
Reflecting on Hadassah’s 100-year history, I believe that building the
future has always been Hadassah’s priority.
Here, I am proud to announce that for the first time in Hadassah’s
history, a woman will be in charge of one of our hospitals. Next week, Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach will become Director of the Hadassah University Hospital-Mt. Scopus. A Hadassah alumna, she is a graduate of our Medical School and completed residencies in both Pediatrics and Hospital Management here at Hadassah.
Osnat Levtzion-Korach believes that Hadassah’s most valuable asset is its people – the people who come to us as patients along with their families, and the people who are there to help and heal them.

I have heard the term, “the yoms” used in the Diaspora to describe the commemorative season that
begins immediately after Passover.In Israel, we don’t think of these as
isolated days, but of a somber week of introspection and mourning that ends with celebration. We move from Holocaust Day to Memorial Day to Independence Day. Our TV and radio programming reflects this mood, with many programs on history and personal stories that remind us of the struggles of our people and enormous efforts to establish the State of Israel. Hadassah has been a partner in every stage of Israel’s development.
I’d like to take this opportunity to honor our physician soldiers. One aspect of life in Israel is that in addition to putting in long days treating patients and doing creative research, a large percentage of our physicians are officers in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). They continue to serve in Reserve Units until their fifties.
Here’s the story of one: Dr. Eitan Gross, a brilliant pediatric surgeon. For six years after High School, Dr. Gross served in one of the army’s toughest and most prestigious Special Forces units: the Naval Commandos, called Shayetet 13. He was the first religiously observant young man to serve in the unit. After giving six years of his life to this tough unit, he spent another six years at Hadassah’s medical school. In those years and for many years later, he continued to change from his green surgeon’s scrubs to his frogman’s wetsuit, taking part in many daring (still classified) underwater operations. Later, he switched to be the commandos’ physician, first continuing on the sea with secret operations and until today serving as their personal doctor.
I caught up with Dr. Gross today, as he was on his way to a Memorial Ceremony for three of his comrades. Where did the fighting spirit come from in this gentle physician?
“My parents were both in the Shoah,” he said. “My father was sent to Russia, and later to work camps in Siberia. My mother was sent to Auschwitz. She thought my father was dead. When she returned to her town in Slovakia, she asked who of her family had survived. ‘Only your husband,’ she was told. She fainted. For two and a half years, she’d thought she was a widow. They reunited and made their way to pre-state Israel.
“I was born in Tel Aviv in 1954. They didn’t talk much about the Shoah, but I knew that I wanted to be a combat soldier. I lived near the sea, and in high school got the idea that I wanted to be a Naval Commando. I managed to pass the rather difficult qualifying course. My mother told me later that she’d never slept through the entire night through while I was in the Navy. On the other hand, my parents had pride that having been helpless once, they had a son who was a serving as a defender of the Jewish people.”
Dr. Gross and his wife Shalvit Landau have three children, all of whom have also served in the IDF. To our 330,000 members of Hadassah he says on the cusp of Independence Day, “We have had many challenges as a Nation, and face still more,” he says. “But I couldn’t imagine myself or my children living anywhere else.”

(Upon reading about Dr. Gross in Mrs. Sofer’s Jerusalem Netletter, the grandmother of one of Dr. Gross’ young patients e-mailed Mrs. Sofer to convey that Dr. Gross saved the life of her grandson during 2008-2009. “For three intensive months,” Elisheva Sompolinsky said, “he came daily at hours that were unbelievable to care for this child who was fighting for his life.” He did so with such humility, integrity, and responsibility that it was life inspiring. Before us stood one of the most unique people I have ever seen in action.”)
