Originally from the East Coast, Tony’s first water adventures were fishing outings with friends in Boston Whalers. After college, he spent time in the West Indies where he learned to windsurf. Fifteen years ago, Tony came to Marina del Rey and joined PMYC. He has served on the board and is currently a flag officer. He has chaired many events, trained numerous race committee volunteers, offers his 53’ aft cabin power cruiser to serve as a race committee signal boat, and is an avid racer. In 2017, he began building the PMYC fleet of club-owned boats, which now numbers more than 15 vessels, from kayaks to Shibumi, a 30’ Ca-pri, which is raced regularly by club members. Recently, Tony became more familiar with predicted log racing and looks forward to participating in his first predicted log race soon.

DeNNY HAYtHorN, CYC Denny’s service to the yachting community started in 1990, when he joined CYC. He was active in the Junior Activities Committee, and served as Com-modore in 2000. Each year Denny organizes a Race Committee training day - open to the public - where he trains markset boat drivers, which includes using the GPS to accurately set racing marks and make square starting lines. At the request of members from PMYC, he helped them setup and organize their new racing

marks and related equipment. Since 2017, Denny has manned the Sunset Series Safety Boat, not only for safety, but also to deploy tetrahedrons to replace missing marks. For the past six years, he has co-organized and run the Starlight Series for the venerable Star class. Denny has been instrumental in managing the permanent Marina del Rey racing marks, including retrieving marks which have gone adrift, repairing and redeploying marks, and working with a diver to clean and maintain the marks.

Yachtsman of the Year

steVe CurrAN, CYC Steve’s involvement in yachting spans more than 55 years. In the 1984 Olympic Games, he co-chaired and served as Principal Race Officer Alpha Circle for the Wind Glider Sailboard event. Steve has completed several TransPacific Yacht Races, winning his class in 1985. At CYC, Steve served as Commodore in 1986, and was for many years in charge of Cruising. Steve chaired the Chamber of Commerce group that led to the unification of the Marina del Rey Sheriffs with the Harbor Patrol. Perhaps his greatest contribution to the yachting community has been co-creation and stewardship of the annual MarinaFest, which he now runs with Lisa and Russ Carrington. While MarinaFest continues to be a fantastic on-water boat show, Steve has worked tirelessly on the event’s broader goal of advocating and growing boating in the Marina del Rey community, in part by bringing in tall ships, arranging free on-the-water harbor historical tours, and working to build Safety at Sea elements.

KAtHAriNe Doble, CYCKatharine learned to sail at CYC when she was eight years old and is one of CYC’s most competitive young sailors. She was awarded the CYC Junior Achievement Racing award in 2016 and again in 2017. Katharine placed first overall in the SCYYRA Carrie Series for the 2017-18 season and was invited to join USODA’s National Team in 2018. She traveled to the 2017 IODA North American Championship in Toronto and the 2018 edition in Puerto Vallarta, the 2018 IODA South

American Championship in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the 2019 IODA European Championship in Crozon-Morgat, France. Katharine finished seventh overall at the 2018 USODA Spring Team Qualifier at Southern YC in New Orleans and was awarded the Bremen Trophy for Top Female. She finished seventh overall at the 2018 Orange Bowl Youth Regatta at Coral Reef YC in Miami and was Top Girl. In 2019, she finished ninth out of 193 boats in the Optimist Team Trials at CYC, and then finished first in the Heavy Weather Regatta at St. Francis YC in San Francisco, becoming the first girl to ever win the Harken Series and the Heavy Weather Regatta.

KiAN HAsseNZADeH, DRYCKian has participated in the DRYC sailing program for the past eight years. Born with minimal ability to hear, this past year he lost all hearing in one ear. Through the years, and this year in particular, he transformed from summer participant to year-round sailor and racer. Kian is always available for partner sailing and has competed in the US Sailing Regional Junior Olympic Festival and Shadden CFJ Series. His growth has not been smooth, made harder by his hearing condition, combined with his early teen years, and wanting to fit in with his peers. But, he could and he did. He knew he had to work harder and faster to achieve the necessary skills and he did, and he continued where others did not. Each year, Kian asked for and took on more responsibilities; he stated that he was serious with that request. His leadership and sportsmanship have grown measurably as have his sailing skills. Becoming a US Sailing instructor is now going to become a reality in his future.

roY P. DisNeY and the crew of Pyewacket, CYC Not many good things happen in the wee hours of the morning, and this was true in the Transpacific Yacht Race, its 50th edition, featuring 90 well-prepared racing boats, all headed to the finish line off Diamond Head, Oahu, some 2,225 nautical miles from their start off Pt. Fermin. At 0200 on July 15, just 37 hours after the start, John Sangmeister’s venerable Santa Cruz 70 OEX was close reaching at 15+ knots when, Bang!, the rudder bearing broke away, leaving a gaping hole in the bottom of the boat. Unable to stem the flooding, OEX activated the emergency tracker and issued the dreaded “Mayday!” call over the radio, and then the nine crewmembers prepared to abandon ship. Fortunately, one of John’s fiercest competitors, Roy P. Disney and his Andrews 70 Pyewacket crew heard the distress call, arriving on the scene just one hour later. Once the OEX crew were safely aboard Pyewacket, all 19 sailors turned to watch the top of OEX’s mast, with mainsail still up, slip beneath the seas. About a day later, Pyewacket and her two crews arrived safely in Marina del Rey. According to Transpac Commodore Bo Wheeler, this was the first sinking of a boat in this iconic race since its inception in 1906.

WeNDY sArNoFF, SMWYCWendy has served the Marina del Rey boating community for the past 40 years. She is an active instructor for Marina Sailing and serves as the lead instructor for all five offices, from Channel Islands to San Diego. In May of 2019, Wendy served as the host presenter for the US Sailing Safety at Sea seminar. Wendy also presented Lifesling training at Del Rey YC in fall of 2018. Boys and Girls Club of Venice named Wendy Sailing Instructor of the Year in 2017 for her development and direction of the Venice Boys

and Girls Club sailing program. Over 250 inner city youth spent a day that summer sailing on Capri 22s and a Catalina 28, donated through Fairwinds Yacht Club. The program continues today and places a USCG/ASA-certified captain on each vessel to provide professional instruction to the students. A winter program is currently in development. For the past 35 years Wendy and her student singers from Venice High School have worked with Beaches and Harbors to provide holiday caroling for families of employees at the annual Holiday Boat Parade. Capt. Wendy offers USCG classes in Marina Del Rey to members of the boating community who wish to become professional mariners, helping them qualify for their USCG OUPV (6-pack) and 100-ton licenses.

AsMbYC HigH PoiNt seriesMany skippers from each Santa Monica Bay harbor sailed the High Point races in 2019 and the best from each harbor earned a trophy. The series rewards those skippers who sail often, and 2020 promises to be even more popular. Each entry is easy, just sail in the races printed in bold face on the follow-ing pages, or designated in this calendar as a High Point Event. Six races are scheduled at each Santa Monica Bay harbor. Your best six races will be scored. Boats berthed in Santa Monica Bay will receive a 30% bonus when they sail at the “other” Santa Monica Bay harbor.

Questions? For complete rules and current standings, just visit the ASMBYC website at www.asmbyc.org, or contact David Doeh, High Point Series Coordi-nator. 310-713-1393 or [email protected].
