Dear supporters and friends of the Belleville Area Humane Society: BAHS has served our community for over 50 years – with a mission to care for the homeless animals in our area. What started out as a home-based rescue, has morphed into a humane society that cares for, nurses back to health and adopts over 1,000 animals a year. “Every adoptable animal has a home.” Somewhere along the line, this became part of our vision statement and we work hard to achieve that goal. We rely solely on the generosity of our community to stay in business. Without your support, we couldn’t continue to operate. Some numbers to think about:• BAHS spends over $640,000 a year to keep our doors open. That’s each and

every year and we rely on the generosity of our community for these funds. We’re not a government-run organization and without your support, we couldn’t keep our doors open.

• 1,000 dogs and cats a year: the number of animals who find their forever families through BAHS.

• $50: the cost to feed all of the dogs and cats at our shelter for one day.• $375: the average amount it costs BAHS to house, feed and medically treat an

animal in our care. • $150-$175: our adoption fees for dogs. This includes the animals’ spay/neuter,

micro chip, heartworm test and vaccinations, excluding rabies. • $50: our adoption fee for cats. Which also includes the spay/neuter, micro chip,

feline leukemia test and vaccinations, excluding rabies.

As you can see, we actually lose money on every adoption. But we’re not here to make money. We’re here to simply serve our community and find every animal a home.

We need your help though and there are many ways you can make a real difference.

Volunteer your time, become a BAHS foster family, “like” us on Facebook, attend our events, donate supplies and always consider BAHS or another shelter when looking for a new pet. Please consider BAHS when planning your estate or yearly charitable donations.

Each and every one of these things make a huge difference to us and we ask you to give in any way you can – especially during the holidays. It’s been our honor to serve the animals in our community and together we really can continue to make a difference.

Respectfully,Susan Skinner, Board president, BAHS

His name is Tedward P. Toodlebugs Browning but you can call him Teddy. A black-and-

white Shih Tzu with a snaggle-toothed grin, Teddy is addicted to paper products – most notably the Macy’s fliers he swipes from the coffee table, though he has been known to hoard shoeboxes.

“He drags them back to his bed,” said my friend and Teddy’s owner Lori Browning of Belleville. “He likes to be comfortable while he chews them.”

Comfortable is the optimum word. Teddy’s fleece-lined dog bed is piled high with plush dog toys. The little scamp spends his days nibbling dog treats, chasing squirrels, and getting belly rubs.

“He lives the good life,” Lori said and laughed. “He’s just a happy-go-lucky little guy.”

It wasn’t always that way. When Teddy came to the Belleville Area Humane Society last

spring, he was filthy and malnourished and missing all the hair on his back. I know this first hand because I was visiting the shelter the morning he arrived. I saw him in the intake room -- a shivering heap of itchy, red skin and tangled, matted fur -- and immediately dialed Lori’s number.

“I think I’ve found your future dog,” I told my friend.

She cried softly on the other end of the phone.

So there you have it. The delightful life of Tedward P. Toodlebugs Browning did not start out delightfully at all. A few months earlier, Lori had been the devoted owner of a boister-ous pug named Yoshi. She had arrived home from Christmas shopping to find Yoshi had unexpectedly passed away while she was gone. She was devastated by the loss.

No, Teddy would never take Yoshi’s place. But he would create his own place in Lori’s heart – and bring some joy back into her life.

“After Yoshi died, I hated to go home after work,” Lori recently told me. “Everywhere I looked there were memories. But when I got Teddy, everything changed.”

Teddy could say the same. He went from having an extremely itchy epidermal staph infection (the reason for his baldness) and severe worms (the reason for his emaciation) to a shiny, well groomed coat and a healthy, if pleasantly plump, physique.

He also went from not knowing how to play with toys to shredding toys to ribbons in search of their squeakers. From fearing cars to loving car rides. From a life of hard knocks to a life lived on easy street.

Lori’s 87-year-old mother, Dorothy Amend, is one of Teddy’s biggest fans. Maybe that’s why he

demands to be lifted up onto her bed every night. “He can’t jump up by himself,” Lori said, “so some-one has to lift him. He puts his paws up on the edge of the bed and looks over his shoulder as if to say, ‘OK, beam me up.’

“My mother is the one who gave him the name Toodlebugs,” added Lori, noting the P. in Tedward P. Toodlebugs Browing stands for “Prancer,” since Teddy is known for prancing.

“Teddy just has brought us so much happiness. You know that saying: ‘My dog rescued me.’ Well, that really is true. He gives a lot more to us than we give to him. Though I must admit… he has a pretty good life.”

Teddy is more than a Toodlebug: He’s a Lovebug!

Teddy looks guilty after shredding some paper!

Race for Rescues 2013 Thanks to everyone who made the 3rd annual Race for Rescues a success. We had more than 400 runners and over 150 dogs participate. We presented dog awards for the first time this year which turned out to be a lot of fun. The photo booth provided by “Let’s Get the Party Started” also was a big hit. We would like to thank “Let’s Get the Party Started” and all our other gener-

ous sponsors who enable BAHS to care for and adopt out more than 1,000 dogs and cats every year. We love this event because it provides devoted dog owners an opportunity to enjoy a day out with their dogs. Thanks to all who participated, volunteered or sponsored. We couldn’t do it without you!

On a cold day in January, Miles came to BAHS in the not so gentlest of ways. Volunteers found him in a wire crate that was entirely too small for him and had been tossed over the shelter fence in the snow.

Needless to say, he was not thrilled. Miles was very scared and spent the first few weeks with us fearful of every move everyone made. He’s since been in foster care where he has lived with four other dogs and made lots of progress with trusting people.

Miles attended obedience training with trainer Bo Harrison and graduated with honors. He is very eager to please, intelligent and energetic. He’s definitely an athlete and loves to dock dive! Fly-ball or agility would be great options for him to showcase his athletic ability; currently he gets his energy out by going on long bike rides with our staff.

A great dog, Miles is ready for a home where he can get the exercise and attention he needs to thrive. He’s not too fond of our feline friends, so he would do best without kitties in the home. Miles has mountains of potential and we’re hoping the right person comes along that can see what we see in him!

Magnificent Miles has come... well, miles!

SPLISH SPLASHIN’ FOR A GREAT CAUSESPLASH FOR RESCUES 2013

Thanks to our generous sponsors Paul & Gina Stroh and Camp Bow Wow, the 2nd annual Splash for Rescues was again a huge success. If you’ve never attended, this event features the amazing Gateway Dock Dogs competing in several different competitions for national honors. Dogs come from several states to compete and they are truly amazing to watch! Proceeds from this fun event benefit the rescue animals from BAHS. Splash for Rescues will return next year June 20 through 22 at Eckert’s Orchards in Belleville. So be sure to mark your calendars!

A Golden Evening The American Kennel Club Museum in Ballwin, Missouri was the perfect setting for a benefit to honor the late Robert Raleigh, an ardent animal lover and supporter of the Belleville Area Humane Society. Guests were able to mingle with Captain Luis Carlos Montalván, author of the New York Times best-selling book, “Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him,” and his beloved service dog, Tuesday.

The evening included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, all set among the galleries of the AKC museum. A book

signing wrapped up the evening, all designed to honor Bob Raleigh and benefit the Belleville Area Humane Society.

“Carol’s Corner” is named for former BAHS president, Carol Lesko, who has devoted years to bettering the lives of animals. We honor people who really go that extra mile for BAHS in “Carol’s Corner.”

What a special kid! Millstadt Consolidated School student, Dylan Buecher, donated ALL of his birthday money to the BAHS “Pennies for Pets” program. His winnings helped earn his class a pizza party. Here, Dylan is presenting a check to BAHS board members, Dr. Noelle Miles, Susan Skinner and mascot Spot.

Grace and Olivia Hageman did a dona-tion station at their eighth birthdayparty and raised money for BAHS and the Red Cross. The girlsasked their friends to donate to charity instead of giving them gifts. They even created a BAHS poster and special canisters for the event. All of the party goers’ parents were said to have loved the party idea too -- and even the kids who couldn’t make the party mailed in their do-nations!The party raised $135 for BAHS and the girls are already planning a similar party for next year. Thank you Grace and Olivia!

Stars were twinkling, wine was sparkling and puppies were yipping. Over 200 people came out to The Weingarten to enjoy dinner under the stars, a huge silent auc-tion, a DJ, a photo booth and raffles. The third annual “Wine for Whiskers” gala on September 12th at the Weingarten was the Belleville Area Humane Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year and even a quick shower couldn’t dampen the spirit of the evening. Co-Chairs, Kathy Simmons and Michelle Meehan Schrader didn’t mind the quick rain shower one bit. Last year’s event saw temperatures soar to 108 degrees, so this year’s rain was just small blip on the radar. “We’re so honored that our community comes out in full force to support this event,” Sim-mons said. “Of course, the puppies and kittens available for adoption drew the biggest crowd. People couldn’t help sneaking the pups and kit-tens into the photo booth for some extra cute shots.” The beautiful venue and Italian cuisine were also a hit, with party goers roaming the scenic

grounds after dining.

“Papa Vito’s did an amazing job catering the din-ner,” Meehan Schrader recalled, “and honestly, I think the Weingarten in Belleville is just the perfect spot for this kind of event. Everyone who turned out to support BAHS had a great time.”

They are all invited back next year.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of the community,” Simmons said. “We have so many won-derful volunteers and supporters. We are just so grateful to them.”

A Glowing Event:Cosmic Bingo gives animals second chance

The Cosmic Bingo held on Nov 16 was a great time and profitable too. This was BAHS’s first fundrais-er for our newly formed Second Chance Fund, which benefits shelter animals that need special care or treatment. More than 200 people attended the glow-in-the-dark bingo, which was held under black lights in a darkened hall. The fundraiser was so popular it sold out almost two weeks before the event! Plans are already underway for the next Cosmic Bingo which will be held the evening of Saturday, February 8 at the Elk’s Hall in Belleville. If you like a good time that includes bingo, music and crazy games, this is just the fundraiser for you. Get out your fluorescent clothing and come ready to daub your bingo card with glow-in-the-dark daubers we will provide.

Cosmic is a little wild and lots of fun. Plus you can win money and benefit our animals at the same time. Call the shelter 235-3712 to reserve a table for our next Cosmic Bingo or go to bahspets.com to reserve online. See you February 8th!
