Capítulo 1La magia de la música

Mi padre era fuerte, pero también era romántico. Lefascinaba la música. Tocaba con los ojos cerrados.

«Carlitos, tengo una sorpresa especial», le dijo supapá. Carlos observó a su papá. Su curiosidad era in-tensa. José, su padre, tenía un violín. Era perfecto y bri-llante.

El instrumento era de color café con líneas negras enel borde. Su papá tocó delicadamente una melodía claray preciosa. Él continuó tocando el instrumento. Entoncesun pájaro1 llegó. El pájaro comenzó a copiar la músicadel violín. El pájaro y su papá se estaban comunicando,¡se estaban comunicando con la música!

Para Carlos este fue un momento memorable. Élpensó, «¡No es posible! ¿Mi padre puede comunicarsecon los pájaros usando el violín? ¿El violín tiene magia?».Carlos tenía muchas preguntas.

– Papá, ¿cómo puedes comunicarte con los pája-ros? ¿Cómo sabes hacer esta magia increíble?

– No es magia, hijo –le respondió su padre–. ¡Esmúsica! Los pájaros se comunican por mediode la música, ¡no se comunican por medio demagia! –le dijo su padre.

– Papá, ¿yo también puedo comunicarme con lospájaros? –le preguntó Carlos con emoción.

– Sí, hijo, puedes comunicarte con los pájaros y¡con los humanos también! Muchas personasse comunican por medio de la música.

Carlos estaba intrigado y se preguntó: «¿Realmentees posible comunicarse con las personas por medio dela música?». Para Carlos, fue un momento importante. Élestaba muy impresionado y en ese día en 1956, decidióaprender a tocar el violín. Así comenzó la educación mu-sical de Carlos Augusto Alves Santana, uno de los músi-cos más famosos en la historia del Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Capítulo 2El abandono

Los viejitos, los chicos, las mujeres, todos lo adora-ban...yo quería ser como él.

– Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana era de una familia de violinistas. Supadre tocaba el violín en un mariachi y era muy admi-rado por su talento. A su padre le gustaba mucho la mú-sica tradicional de México. La música era una gran partede la familia Santana y para el padre de Carlos, era unaparte muy seria.

El padre de Carlos tocaba el violín en fiestas y cele-braciones y su banda era más o menos famosa. Su padretambién tocaba en varias otras bandas. Trabajaba muchopara tener suficiente dinero para mantener a su familia,así que no podía pasar mucho tiempo en casa con su fa-

milia. Aunque trabajaba tanto, la familia Santana erapobre y tenía muchos problemas financieros.

Ellos vivían en un pueblo que se llamaba Autlán deNavarro, en el estado de Jalisco, México, a poca distan-cia de la costa del Océano Pacífico. En 1954, cuandoCarlos tenía 7 años, no hubo suficiente trabajo en Autlánpara José. Él tuvo que abandonar a su familia para buscartrabajo en otras partes. No quería abandonar la vida tran-quila del pueblo, pero no tenía alternativa. Carlos noquería que su padre se fuera, pero así era la vida en Mé-xico, especialmente para una familia de músicos.

– Papá, ¿por qué tienes que irte? –le preguntóCarlos con voz triste.

– Porque necesito trabajar. Aquí en Autlán nohay trabajo. Me voy a Tijuana.

– ¿Por qué vas solo?

– Carlitos –le dijo su padre – es temporal. Tengoque buscar trabajo.

– Pero papá…–le dijo Carlos tristemente.

– Cuando yo tenga trabajo y una casa para la fa-milia, ustedes podrán vivir conmigo en Tijuana.

Su padre salió de Jalisco para buscar trabajo. Se fuea Tijuana, en el estado de Baja California, México. Carlosestaba triste, pero realmente estaba acostumbrado a nover mucho a su padre. Su padre normalmente pasabamuy poco tiempo en la casa, pero a Carlos no le gustabala idea de no vivir con su padre. A su madre no le gus-taba la idea, pero tampoco le gustaba ser pobre.

En Autlán, la mamá de Carlos, Josefina frecuente-mente recibía cartas y dinero de su esposo. Aunque legustaba el dinero, no le gustaba vivir separada de él. Ellaquería vivir con su esposo. Era difícil vivir separados. Paraella, era importante tener una familia unida y ella queríaque sus hijos vivieran con su padre. Un día en 1955, Jo-sefina recibió dinero de su esposo y decidió que era elmomento perfecto para ir a Tijuana.
