United States Dedicates New U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

In an important symbol of our commitment and enduring relationship with the Dominican Republic, Under Secretary for Management Patrick F. Kennedy, U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic James Brewster, and Principal Deputy Director of the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Heather Townsend alongside local officials dedicated the new U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo today.

The new multi-building complex provides employees with a safe, secure, and modern workplace. Situated on a 16-acre site in the Altos de Arroyo Hondo section of Santo Domingo, the new campus includes a Chancery, a U.S. Marine Corps residence, three access pavilions, a support annex, and community facilities.

The $193 million project incorporates numerous sustainable features to conserve resources and reduce operating costs, including a 345 kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic array, light-emitting diode (LED) site lighting, and water reuse from an on-site wastewater treatment plant to irrigate site plantings.

Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners of Santa Monica, California is the design architect and Integrus Architecture of Spokane, Washington is the architect of record. Caddell Construction Company LLC of Montgomery, Alabama constructed the multi-building campus.

Since 1999, as part of the Department’s Capital Security Construction Program, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has completed 113 new diplomatic facilities and has an additional 30 projects in design or under construction.

OBO’s mission is to provide safe, secure, and functional facilities that represent the U.S. government to the host nation and support our staff in the achievement of U.S. foreign policy objectives. These facilities should represent American values and the best in American architecture, engineering, technology, sustainability, art, culture, and construction execution.

General InformatIon

• The new U.S. Embassy is located on a 16-acre site in the Altos de Arroyo Hondo section of Santo Domingo. The site is fronted on the south by República de Colombia Avenue - a main thoroughfare that connects the site to the center of the city.

• The new campus includes a five-story Chancery, a U.S. Marine Corps residence, a support annex, multiple campus access pavilions, and community facilities.

• The new consular section includes over 50 windows for visa services.

• The new U.S. Embassy facility creates a secure, efficient, flexible, and supportive workplace for Embassy employees, and its visitors.

DesIGn

• The design of the new campus responds to the local site, climate and culture of Santo Domingo.

• Stone walls provide a visible connection to the early architecture of Santo Domingo, and make a statement of longevity. The soft native coral stone, with its embedded fossils, reappears in the interior.

• The south and west facing curtain walls are protected from the Caribbean sun by a floating outer scrim of perforated metal.

• Terrazzo tile was chosen as the primary exterior and interior floor surface for the Chancery. The white specked color evokes the idea of sand, while distributing natural light and helping with the natural cooling of the building.

• Carpet tile was choreographed into patterns in representational spaces and accented with eco-friendly engineered “teak” wood veneer millwork. Staff workstations coordinate with the pattern.

ConstruCtIon

• A design-build construction contract was awarded to Caddell Construction Company LLC in September 2010.

• Construction commenced in Spring 2011 and was completed in June 2014.

• An estimated 1,800 workers were involved in the construction of the new Embassy.

sustaInabIlIty

• The building is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and is targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification, with aspirations of achieving LEED Gold.

• The new Embassy will use emissions-free power from a 345 kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic array.

• The Embassy is projected to reduce energy costs by 35% compared against a conventional building. This savings is accomplished through the use of light-emitting diode (LED) Site lighting, electric traction elevators, and variable frequency drives from pumps, fans, and motors.

• Water from an on-site wastewater treatment plant is reused to irrigate site plantings which were carefully selected to reduce the required amount of irrigation.

art

• The permanent art collection, curated by the Office of Art in Embassies (AIE), includes works by contemporary American, Dominican, and Dominican-American artists for both the interior and exterior spaces. The art incorporates a variety of styles and media: painting, photography, drawings, textiles, as well as ceramic, and sculpture.

• The general themes are light, color, and nature with a cultural connection to the Dominican Republic's ceramics and painting traditions.

• The collection also features four site-specific commissions by Cheryl Pope, Pae White, Firelei Baez, and Kehinde Wiley.
