General Information About Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia, located southeast of India and northeast of the Maldives. The island is home
to many cultures, languages and ethnicities. The majority of the population is from the Sinhalese ethnicity, while a large
minority of Tamils have also played an influential role in the island's history; Christians in both groups are recent converts
who have kept the traditional culture. Moors, Burghers, Malays, Chinese, and the aboriginal Vedda are also established
groups on the island.
Sri Lanka's documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at
least 125,000 years. It has a rich cultural heritage and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pali Canon, date
back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic
importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to the modern Maritime Silk Road.
Etymology of Sri Lanka
In antiquity, Sri Lanka was known to travellers by a variety of names. According to the Mahavamsa, the legendary Prince
Vijaya named the land Tambapanni, because his followers' hands were reddened by the red soil of the area. In Hindu
mythology, such as the Ramayana, the island was referred to as Lankā. The Tamil term Eelam, was used to designate the
whole island in Sangam literature.
Ancient Greek geographers called it Taprobana or Taprobane from the word Tambapanni. The Persians and Arabs referred
to it as Sarandīb from the word Cerentivu. Ceilao, the name given to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese Empire when it arrived in
1505, was transliterated into English as Ceylon. As a British crown colony, the island was known as Ceylon; it achieved
independence as the Dominion of Ceylon in 1948.
In 1972, its formal name was changed to "Free, Sovereign and Independent Republic of Sri Lanka". Later in 1978 it was
changed to the "Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka". As the name Ceylon still appears in the names of a number of
organisations, the Sri Lankan government announced in 2011 a plan to rename all those over which it has authority.
History of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has more than 2,550 years of continuous written history by means of the Mahawansha, and was also mentioned
in several ancient Indian texts. One of the most famous is the Ramayana, in which the island, which was referred to as
Lanka, was the island fortress of the king Ravana. And over many centuries Sri Lanka has had many names.
The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century BC, probably from northern India. Buddhism was introduced
beginning in about the mid-3rd century BC, and a great civilization developed at such cities as Anuradhapura and
Polonnaruwa. Other notable but relatively more recent kingdoms are Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Gampola, Kandy and
Jaffna Kingdoms.

We had to make bigger our image and goodwill more coherent and to communicate
through it our whole set of values. We re-evaluated most of the things: our new name,
new logo, office design, the exterior design of transportation, the brochures, billboards
and launch a campaign to promote new company and image of the company. It was also
now that we assumed the new slogan: "We just don't say the best, We do the best”
National Tourism Award winner - No venture can be successful without a vision and
determination to excel. Behind our steady growth is the focused and well-planned
business strategy of its dynamic leader. Our directors with their exceptional vision,

WE ENDEAVOR TO BE RESPONSIBLE tour operator and respect nature and the
environment we work in. Tourism is a key element in the global economy, but it also has
its downside. Environmental protection is nothing new to us, which has been
committing itself to environmental activities since 2000. Since then, we have regularly
taken part in cleaning projects on various mountain paths that have been affected by
intensive tourism.
We operate our own environmental cleaning projects to keep the environment neat,
clean and green. We also organize ecology training and attract volunteers to participate
in our environmental projects. Moreover, we aim to bring awareness to our employees
on the necessity to care for nature and the environment.
We encourage activities such as reducing the use of paper, plastic and electric energy in
office activities, re-use and recycling.

Dreams Wishes&Sanyog Gupta Foundation
For us charity begins at home. We would soon launch a charitable organisation name
“Sanyog Gupta Foundation”. The foundation will help out all waifs and stray
children, needy people for living and other health related financial aid.
We made an announcement of this foundation in an interview to the newspaper here in
New Delhi, India. I have been thinking of opening a foundation like this for long and
when I am settled mentally and financially I decided it's the right prospect to announce
our foundation, because for us charity begins at home.
The charitable sector is an imperative and captivating one, economically socially and
culturally. Every one of the world's great religions emphasises the moral imperative of
charitable living. There is no code of ethics, whether religiously based or secular, that
does not mandate the strong to look after the week, shares Sanyog.
We have made a start by planning, organising, directing, staffing and controlling and
soon the project will hit the ground. We would be glad to be given any help from the
corporate world to raise funds for the foundation.

Introduction

Marco Polo described this as the finest island of its size in the world. Only here can you gaze on palm-fringed beaches and a lapping Indian Ocean, then tropical grasslands and soaring mountain peaks, all within a few hours' of travel. Ruins of ancient kingdoms across the land give insight into a sophisticated ancient society and2,500 years of heritage. Sri Lanka today thrives through its deep-rooted traditions and a personality that draws so many back time and again.
Getting ThereSri Lankan Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar airways offer one-stop flights from the UK via the Gulf to Colombo. Those travelling from the USA, Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia and the Far East can catch a connecting flight to Colombo from many of the main cities in Europe, the Middle East or South East Asia.
Getting AroundBarter for a 3-wheeler at around Rs.40 per km or take set price taxis for longer journeys. Soak in the spectacular scenery of a train journey. Buses are also cheap and regular. Roads seem chaotic chauffeur-driven cars run at similar cost to independent car hire, and are probably safer. Bicycle hire is only really suitable for the quieterroads.
When to go Sri Lanka's tropical climate generally offers warmth and sunshine throughout the year. Figures vary widely from region to region – as the rainfall map shows. The south-west monsoon (Yala) brings most rain during May/June. The north-east monsoon (Maha) brings rain between December and February. There are also inter-monsoon rains, usually in October/early November.

Day 01: Arrive Colombo – Sigiriya Arrive Colombo, meet assist and transfer to Sigiriya.
Day 02: Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya (B)After breakfast, visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Originally called Sihagiri (Remembrance Rock) and later dubbed Sigiriya (Lion Rock), the rock mass is actually the hardened magma plug of an extinct volcano that long ago eroded away. Pocked with natural cave shelters and rock overhangs - supplemented over the centuries by numerous hand-hewn additions and modifications – the rock may have been inhabited in prehistoric times.
Popular myth says that the formation served royal and military functions during the reign of King Kassapa (AD 477–495), who allegedly built a garden and palace on the summit. According to this theory, King Kassapa sought out an unassailable new residence after overthrowing and murdering his own father, King Dhatusena of Anuradhapura. Evening visit Polonnaruwa Ancient city.
The history Polonnaruwa goes as far as 6th century BC when a minister of the king Vijaya (From whom the Sinhalese race was born) established a town called “Vijitha Grama” on the area now called Kaduruwela. This is also the place for the famous “Battle of Vijithapura” between the Great King Dutugamunu and the Tamil invader Elara in his effort to re-unite the country under one Sinhalese King. This area was gradually developed as an influential agricultural town with large irrigation tanks and complex waterways built by various kings who ruled from Anuradhapura.
Day 03: Sigiriya – Kandy (B)After breakfast, proceed to Kandy. En route visit Dambulla Rock Temple & spice Garden at Mathale. The rock of Dambulla is the centre of a Buddhist cave-temple complex established in the 3rd century BC and occupied continuously until today.
Its location has marked a transportation node between the Eastern and Western Dry Zones and between the Dry Zones and the central mountains throughout the history of Sri Lanka. The cave-temple complex is established on an inselberg or erosional remnant of importance in the study of the island's geological history.
The site also includes evidence of human occupation going back to the prehistoric period, including the megalithic cemetery at Ibbankatuwa. On the way to Kandy stop at Spice Garden.
Spice Garden - You will see many spice gardens at Matale and in Mawanella on the Colombo-Kandy road where Cinnamon, Cardamom, Pepper Creepers and all other spice trees, plants and creepers are planted for visitors to see them.
Spice products are also available for those who would like to buy them. At all Spice Gardens visitors are taken round explaining each tree and plant and at the end explaining the use of them in food preparations. Afterwards visit a Batik Factory where you can see the manufacture of beautiful Batik prints. These shops contain a wide variety of Batik items. Proceed to Kandy and check in to the hotel.
Day 04: Kandy – Beruwala (B)After breakfast, visit Royal Botanical Garden at Peredeniya. It was British colonialist rulers (1815-1948) of Ceylon, who destroyed the invaluable forest cover of a thousand wooded hills from Kandy to Badulla of Central Highlands of Ceylon that was protected by the gentle sway of Buddhism, which indoctrinated the respect for all living beings.
The wooded hills were converted to hill after hill of Ceylon Coffee and following the devastating "coffee rust" (a leaf blight - Hemileia vastratrix) in 1869 to seamless hill plantations of CeylonTea.The very same British Colonialist rulers of Ceylon established the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens that contribute, today, towards the enlightenment of concepts of floriculture conservation, birdlife conservation, butterfly conservation, biodiversity and sustainability of the island of Sri Lanka: 5% of the school children of Sri Lanka visit the Peradeniya gardens every year.

Will I have trouble with the language barrier in Sri Lanka? You'll find some degree of English available in most tourist areas, or at least a friendly, English-speaking local willing to help out when you order food or purchase tickets. The language difference is rarely an issue and will not affect your enjoyment of Sri Lanka.
You'll encounter more language difficulties in remote places off the beaten path for sure. Even in places with little or no English, you'll be able to point or charade your way through with a little patience.
Are bed bugs a serious problem in Sri Lanka? The recent resurgence of bed bugs affected North America far worse than it has Sri Lanka. Ironically, Westerner travelers are bringing bed bugs to Sri Lanka from home, rather than the other way around.
Once considered only a problem for backpackers staying in the most budget of places, bed bugs are a serious and costly problem found even in four-star hotels. With a little vigilance on your part, you can avoid coming into contact with them and ultimately avoid spreading the pests.
Is Indian currency accepted in Sri Lanka? It's all due to Indian bank regulations making it a more or less 'closed' currency just like the Lankan rupee. And sadly, in this case it's better to use a strong currency as in-between or use a debit card of an Indian bank... Correct, banks in Sri Lanka are not allowed to change Indian (and Pakistani) Rupees.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people travel in a group? The majority of our hop-on hop-off tour groups consist of between 10 and 15 people, with a maximum of 24 (including driver and Tour Guides). Having a small group size not only means we can offer a more personalised service, but it also gives us access to more destinations, activity and accommodation options.
Absolutely, that's the beauty of small group travel. You will make friends quickly and your Tour Guide will become a good source of support to you along the way too!
What does the tour leader do?Each hop-on hop-off tour group is accompanied by a western or local tour leader (or both!) to inform, enthral and entertain you with facts, stories and unbelievable insight into the local culture.
They will also book your accommodation and recommend top notch things to do every step of the way. Our guides are consistently one of the most highly-rated features of our trips - just ask any traveller of ours! They will become a good friend and source of support to you.
What will I eat whilst in Southeast Sri Lanka?Western food is sparse outside the main center so come open-minded about eating local food. At our stops we will recommend tasty restaurants but when you get into local villages and home stays be prepared to eat simple local fare, with maybe the odd wild-card ingredient (which is part of the fun!).
Supermarkets are not the norm but we will point out places where you can stock up on food for the day. Depending what you eat, you can spend US$5 - 15 a day on food.
When is the best time to travel? It depends on your destination, activities and season of travel. Our destination specialists will recommend certain travel times after learning more about your preferences. The favorable months are usually December - March for the west coast and south coast, and from April - September for the ancient cities and the east coast. The northeast monsoon is usually November – March and the southwest monsoon is June – October.
Are vaccinations required?Immunizations are not required to visit Sri Lanka. Depending on the season and region of travel, certain vaccinations and / or medications are suggested and we will recommend preventative measures.
Which style of trip is right for me?Our three styles of travel – Basix, Original and Comfort – cover a whole gamut of travel experiences. To find out which one has 'You' written all over it, visit our trip styles page.
Are trips physically demanding?Want to lie in a hammock and not move until cocktail hour? We've got a trip for that. Want to power up the side of mountain at high altitude? We've also got a trip for that. To determine what type of trip suits you best, each of our trips comes with a Physical Rating to let you know how physically demanding it is… or isn't. Find out more about ratings.
Does SGV have family trips? SGV offers a wide range of Family Adventures around the globe. The minimum age (for Family trips) varies depending on destination, and SGV has set minimum ages to ensure that the included activities suit each age range. Additionally, you'll notice that some of the more adventurous destinations have a higher minimum age.
How many people will be on my trip? Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we're small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals.
On most of our trips you'll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip's overview page on our website.
Are there age restrictions on your trips? For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located
