Even with PPBAs, the limitations of simply replacing tape is not enough.

The combination of an explosion of data that needs to be protected and the inability of backup to respond quickly has resulted in dissatisfaction.

This is cause a rift between Business and IT.

The difference today is that data owners have other alternatives to protecting their data.

So application owners or lines of business go off on their own leaving the IT with less visibility and control then ever before.

As a result this can lead to what we call the accidental architecture.

Now this is hardly anything anyone would intentionally plan.

By integrating more closely with the data sources and leveraging the power of software we been able to break the mold of traditional backup and unleash greater performance and flexibility.

Essentially bridging the gap between the data owners and IT by providing the service levels they expect, the choice they crave while allowing IT to maintain visibility and control overall. #SAP Backup ChallengesBackup WindowsApplication Consistent RecoveryGranular RecoveryStorage Needed For Backup, Test, DevLack Of DBA Control & Visibility Leads To Silos Of Storage

# Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved.Lets get specific now about backup for Oracle. Traditional backup has hit a wall. Whether youre struggling to get backups done within available windows or youre struggling to ensure timely recoveries that are application consistent you need to get up and running fast. Or maybe you cant recover at a granular level. Sometimes the struggle is with storage requirements across test, development and backup.Perhaps, as a DBA, youve had to go off and find some disk storage to use with native application or database backup tools like Oracle RMAN. This can result in backup silos and a silod backup process that is inefficient and ultimately not the best strategy for an efficient application backup and recovery strategy. What this all means is your business cant do more or do what it wants without putting data at risk. Whether its making a database change or virtualizing applications or something even bigger. And this is a very big problem.

# Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Why EMC backup and recovery for Oracle? Because we provide integrated solutions that take Oracle protection to the next level. As the worlds fastest and most scalable deduplication storage systems, Data Domain systems reduce backup storage requirements by 10 to 30 times and network bandwidth by up to 99%. With DD Boost, you get 50% faster backups to ensure your databases are protected in ever shrinking backup windows. Data Domain systems are built as the storage of last resort and thanks to the Data Invulnerability Architecture, you can recover data reliably every time. Perhaps best of all, EMC offers to flexibility to give you, the DBAs control or keep control with the backup team or both! Finally Data Domains systems are the first inline dedupe system to enable you to leverage multiplexing for your Oracle backups and still maximize dedupe rates.#Data Domain BasicsSeamless integration with existing environmentReplicationCIFS, NFS, NDMP, DD Boost, Ethernet

This is a picture of what you would see in a Data Domain deployment. A Data Domain appliance is a storage system with shelves of disks and a controller. Its optimized, first to back up and second to archive applications, and supports the industry-leading backup, archiving and enterprise applications.

The list on the left is composed primarily of leading backup, archive, and enterprise applicationsnot only EMCs offerings with EMC NetWorker & SourceOne, but also Symantec, CommVault, Oracle and so on

On the way into the storage system, data can pass through either Ethernet or Fibre Channel. With Ethernet, it can use mass protocols and NFS or CIFS; it can also use optimized protocols or products, such as Data Domain Boost, a custom integration with leading backup applications. Fibre Channel connectivity enables a Data Domain system to act as a virtual tape library or you can use DD Boost over Fibre Channel to eliminate virtual tape management.

After the data is stored and its deduplicated during the storage process, it can replicate for disaster recovery. Only the compressed deduplicated unique data segments that have been filtered out through the right process on the target tier are replicated.

The first option is to leverage RMAN to write directly to the Data Domain system over CIFS or NFS

The second is to leverage RMAN to write direction to the Data Domain system over DD Boost.

The third option is leveraging a backup application integrated with RMAN to backup to Data Domain.

Lets review each one of these#Option 1Basis Admin Writes To Data Domain Via DD Boost

To understand how this happens, lets quickly review Data Domain Boost.9#Data Domain BoostAdvanced Integration With Leading Backup And Enterprise ApplicationsSpeeds Backups By Up To 50 PercentEnables More Efficient Resource Utilization Provides Application Control Of Data Domain Replication ProcessAdvanced Integration for Faster Backup

DD Boost # Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved.Data Domain Boost is a software option supported across the entire Data Domain family, that distributes parts of the deduplication process out of the Data Domain system and onto the backup server or application client. The speeds backups by up to 50% and enables more efficient resource utilization including reducing the impact on the server by 20 to 40% and reducing the impact on the network by 80 to 99%.

In addition, DD Boost enables the application to control the Data Domain replication process with full catalog awareness of both the local and remote copies of the backup.

DD Boost is supported with the majority of the backup software market as well as with industry leading database utilities.#DD Boost for SAPDirect App Owner Control Of Backup Using SAP Br*toolsFaster Backup And Recovery Using Native Utilities Supports IP Or Fibre Channel

# Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. But what exactly gets distributed?

There are 4 basic steps to the deduplication process and without DD Boost, these all happen inline as data is ingested into the Data Domain system:

First, the data stream is broken into variable length segments and each segment is identifiedSecond, the system will determine if each segment is unique or if already has stored it. Third, if the segment is unique, it will compress the segmentFourth, it will then write each unique segment to disk

Youll notice that without DD Boost, all data is sent across the network and all 4 steps happen as data is ingested into the Data Domain system.#DD Boost For SAPWhat Gets Distributed?

LAN

With DD BoostBR*Tools

DD BoostSAP Server# Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. However, with DD Boost, 2 of those steps get distributed to the Oracle server, specifically,

The segment is identified on the Oracle server, then it will check with the Data Domain system to determine if its unique. If the segment is unique, the Oracle server will compress it and send it across the network, then the Data Domain system to write it to disk.

Youll notice that by distributing parts of the deduplication process upstream, we are now only sending unique data over the network. This increases backup performance by an average up 50%, reduced the LAN bandwidth required by 99% and even reduces the impact on the Oracle server by 20 to 40%. That last one may seem counterintuitive but the basic reason is that sending data is a very resource intensive process for the server, so by only sending unique data, you greatly reduce the impact on the server and the parts of deduplication processing result in an overall net reduction.

What you dont see in this picture are two other main features of DD Boost: managed file replication and advanced load balancing and failover.#Data Domain Boost EcosystemAppServer

The first is for apps that only support Data Domain Boost on the backup/media server, which enables DD Boost to distribute parts of the deduplication process to the backup server. It this scenario, all data is sent from the Oracle server across the network to the backup server, then only unique data is sent from the backup server to the Data Domain system.

Alternatively, with backups apps like EMC Avamar and EMC NetWorker, you can distribute the deduplication process all the way up to the application client. In this only unique data is sent from the Oracle server to the Data Domain system and the backup server is eliminated from the data path.#Oracle Backup And RecoveryData Domain Boost Flexibility

# Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright 2014 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved.Corrupted data is a growing problem for IT organizations. The constant growing number of applications running on organizations networks increases the number of human errors, viruses and data over-run. IT organization are constantly struggling to find ways to address this growing problem.

With RecoverPoint you can reduce RTO with granular RPO and limit your data loss to a single transaction. With RecoverPoint DVR-like, any point-in-time recover you can retrieve your data remotely or locally to a point in time that is one fraction of a second before the virus attack accrued.#

If you rely on backup, your recovery point is determined by the last tape or backup to disk job you created.

Depending on when the operational error occurs, you may be faced with a recovery point that is hours in the past and all the data in between is lost.

With the cause being fat fingers, viruses, corruption or data over-runs the IT organizations can no longer rely on backups alone and are complementing backup solutions with snapshots to shorten that window, but it still could be 2-3 hours long. Not ideal when it comes to the increasing demands being placed on data protection.

But business requirements are becoming more and more demanding the challenge of resolving corrupted and lost data becomes more and more vital to IT organizations

Because of the high costs and increasing pressure to reduce of data loss and downtime, traditional approaches to data loss are no longer sufficient.

Many organizations are now moving to Continuous Data Protection because it enables any point in time recovery for recovery to the millisecond, like using a unique DVR-like rollback mechanism.

Using RecoverPoint you can bookmark specific points in time that might be used during a future recovery and also create application-aware bookmarks that annotate specific points in time that are application-consistent.

With RecoverPoint, once the data is recovered you can re-start your applications manually or automatically. #Production ReplicationReplication

A good example of this is adding the ability to recover to any point in time in an SRM failover, failback or test scenario. For those in the audience who utilize SRM in your environment, you know you are limited to recover to the last point in time SRM has recorded. But for many, this may not be to most appropriate point to restart your application. By extending SRM with an any point in time capability, you have the flexibility to restart you application at the optimal restart point. This choice also enables you to restart quicker, for faster recovery times.
